The view from Calgary

The final indignity for the Calgary Flames came in the final minutes of the third period. Shortly after Justin Williams’ empty-net goal gave the Kings a 3-0 lead, a fan in the lower-bowl seats threw a red Calgary jersey onto the ice. Flames forward Tom Kostopoulos skated over, banged his stick on the glass near where the jersey landed, and threw it back into the seats. The Flames remain mathematically alive in the Western Conference playoff race, but they are three points out of a playoff spot with only four games remaining. Everyone in Scotiabank Saddledome knew what last night’s game meant for the Flames’ postseason chances. By the third period, there was a mixture of frustrated boos, Bronx cheers and — from the diehards — short-lived chants of “Go, Flames, Go.’’ As for the Sutter Bowl, Darryl Sutter finished with a 2-1-1 record against brother Brent and the Flames this season. Here’s how the Calgary Herald and the Calgary Sun covered last night’s game, followed by some additional postgame quotes, courtesy of The Associated Press…

(on the game…) “I just thought our decision-making was a step slow tonight and theirs was probably half a step quick. It’s not good. The result was them executing both ways and us making poor decisions and allowing them to execute and not forcing them to defend us.”
