Havlat to Kings fans: You’re No. 1

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, My guess artrithis locked the index finger. I went to a Kings game at Anaheim and it must be terrible for visiting fans to out number the hometeam and be louder. As I remember it Kings were up 3 -0 and Petr Sykora scored a goal and I guess he didn’t partically appreciate that I booed and was pointing to the scoreboard in by Palffy Jersey, so he let me know I was # 1. In the NFL this behavior draws fines, has a hockey player ever been fined for this?

@toemas_sandstrom, We’ve had a couple Kings give the “salute” as well…February 13, 1983 — In what was believed to be an NHL-record streak for consecutive games without a loss against any opponent, the Flyers’ 32-game (27-0-5) unbeaten streak against LA was snapped as the Kings were victorious 5-4 in Philadelphia. The last prior Kings win against Philly was October 10, 1974. The improbable win came on the heels of LA’s loss in Pittsburgh which enabled the Penguins to snap their 18-game winless skid. Meanwhile, the Flyers entered this game 19-1-2 in the last 22 played. The relief of a possible victory was shown by the Kings’ Jerry Korab who, despite being bloodied in a fight with Darryl Sittler, extended a certain finger to the Philadelphia faithful upon being ejected from the game with 48 seconds remaining and the Kings up by just one goal.

    cfc1fan Reply:

@gralx, You missed the point, it was a classic moment in Kings history. I laughed my a** off when it happened (yes, it was televised) and even Miller thought it was funny. It was (beating them in Philly) the “miracle” before the Miracle on Manchester. 10 years of losing to Flyers, you have to understand there were fights IN the Forum EVERY time the Flyers came to town. Deserved it?? HELL YES THEY DESERVED IT! Jerry Korab was a great fighter and a horrible D-man….horrible…and because of that night in Philly, he will always have a special place in Kings fans hearts!

I saw that during the replay at Staples Center. I couldn’t tell if it actually happened or not but it sure seemed so. I’m glad Rich captured a screen grab of this.

I remember back in the day when Chris Gardocki (Cleveland Browns punter) flipped off the Steelers sideline during play and was caught on video. A $5,000 fine was all he received. That’s been nearly 12 years now. The Steelers deserved it, I might add. (Go Browns!)

As family friendly as Gary Bettman wants the NHL to be, I hope they give Havlat a stiff punishment. Although, I doubt much will happen except for yahoo.com putting on yahoo’s front page making the NHL look bad again.

I just don’t get it. With all the routine BS player’s hear night in and night out, what would make Havlat flip off the crowd from the ice? There must be some extra bad blood we don’t know about. It takes a lot to do something like that.

Either way… a big middle finger from me to Martin… even though losing by three goals is a pretty big punishment in itself.

And by the way, who punted for the Steelers in the SB winning season of 2006? I guess Gardocki wasn’t too angry at the Steelers that he couldn’t collect a paycheck and his only SB Ring with them. The Story does have a Kings connection. Who did he actually flip off on the sideline? Kevin Westgarth’s father in law.

    Stuart Reply:

@bbb7, I don’t have a set of Warrior gloves, but from the looks of it, it seems that the glove has a really long thumb and that there are 3 fingers to the other side of the one that extended… I think bird gate investigation is complete and it’s been deemed to be a harmless index finger.

    Deke'r Reply:

@Stuart, ….what would the purpose of the “long thumb” be?….eye gouging in a clench?…

    Stuart Reply:

@Stuart, The same as the longer thumbs on easton gloves, more protection I’d assume. I never liked gloves with a long/pointier thumb because as a Dman, it would get in the way when I would swing the stick back into my hand. I prefer the thumbs on some old vaughn’s that I’ve had repalmed several times over the years… short and stubby.

If you look at different gloves, the thumb is not a standard length/width at all, some are longer than other brands. I’m not making this stuff up.

Didn’t see there was a new thread, Sutter’s quotes is usually the last one of the night but Havlat is special.

Finally got home. What an amazing game that was to blow the Sharks right out of the water and to send them in a tailspin to, a whopping 18.2 to 37.7% odds to make the playoffs. While the Kings went up 10.1 to 70.6%. They also have entered the top 8 and hopefully will stay there from now on. The big test of just how they are doing will be Thursday against Numero Uno St Louis.

Now to the Stats. This was game 5 of the first 7 game increment counting down the last 14 games. The Kings have won the first 5 games and have completed what we said they needed to, winning 5 out of 7. They can take a break but why now…Keep it going. 7 out of 7 is not a long shot anymore.

    Chicago – W – 1-0
    Detroit – W – 2-0
    Anaheim – W – 3-0
    Nashville – W – 4-0
    San Jose – W – 5-0

Two more games round out the first 7 game increment. They include St Louis and Boston. Win those two and go 7-0 for 14 points and 88 total. Do this and all they need to do to make the playoffs is win at least 3 out of the 2nd set of seven. Our last 7 games include Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota, Edmonton, San Jose, San Jose. I see us winning 5 of these 7. so that would give us 10-12 wins and 94-98 points. Our chances of winning the Pacific Division are great now and we also have the edge versus Dallas. Both have 9 games left but Dallas has the tougher schedule overall, although they lead in ROW 33-31. Thankfully Tonight’s Dallas win did not add to there ROW.

San Jose can thank Colorado for winning and not allowing Calgary to win and put them in 11th.

    @Jeff_R,

Reviewing the #’s, it appears that 95pts is the minimum to shoot for (with a SOLID chance of making playoffs). 94 will give us the statistical odds but not quite a guarantee. 96-98 basically puts us in the Pacific lead and 3rd. 95-96 means 7th is likely and 94 gives us a good chance of 7th only with a slim shot at 3rd.

    [Reply]

    kingsxstevenxkings Reply:

Simpler breakdown of the points and where could end up:

Points Chance of Playoffs 3rd Place 6th Place 7th Place 8th Place
    98 100% 86% 4.3% 9.3% 0%

    97 100% 71% 5.3% 22% 2.3%

    96 99.5% 52% 3.5% 34.8% 9.5%

    95 95.7% 31% 2% 38% 25%

    94 80.7% 14.3% 0% 26.5% 39.5%

93 and Below, the chance of making playoffs is a coin flip (50%) and lower

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@kingsxstevenxkings, To make the playoffs the Kings need to win at least 5 more games, 5-4. To win the division they need to win at least 6, 6-3 in there final 9. 94 to make playoffs and 96 to win division. Those are projections and could change.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Chris, Yes I am positive but the way the Kings are playing there is reason to be positive. I felt that the Kings would be playing well but they are playing even better then I expected. Heck even Penner is getting into the act. Basically they can’t lose if they keep playing the way they are. When I started this there was 14 games left and it was figured that they needed to win at least 9 games. I felt they could win 10 out of the 14. The way they are playing though 12 isn’t a long shot anymore heck even winning all 14 games isn’t out of the realm of possibility. They just got to keep the foot on the pedal and not let up no matter who they are playing. The fly in the ointment could be the Oilers and Wild. They sometimes have trouble against those two teams and 3 of the games against those 2.

@Jeff_R, After a pretty deflating loss you rolled out the 7/7 plan and pretty much everything you pointed out has turned out to be spot on. Things were not looking good and i was ready to turn out the lights. You (and Dominick) both said it wasn’t anywhere near time for that and look where we’re at now! There’s much more to be done, but I’ll guarantee teams around the league are taking notice and nobody wants to end up facing the Kings in the playoffs!

    Steven H Brown Reply:

@Jeff_R, The Kings only made it to the top 8 last night because Dallas won the SO over Phoenix, reverse that result, and the Kings are still on the outside looking in despite winning 9 of the last 12 games, 5 more wins, in 9 games might get them into the playoffs, but it will matter who they beat, in those 9 games. if they lose the game in Calgary and the final 2 games the home and home with San Jose , even 94 points could have them on the outside looking in. Phoenix is currently 9th in the West, but if they would have won the SO in Dallas last night, they would be in 3rd, and leading the Pacific Division, rather than in 3rd place 1 point off of the lead. The best scenario for the Kings is to win out, and that still wouldn’t guarantee they would win the Pacific Division, as Dallas is a point ahead, and could also win their remaining 9 games and finish a point ahead of the Kings.

    [Reply]

    trytodethroneus Reply:

    @Steven H Brown,

How many “reverse the results” do we get in games we lost?
A whole lotta “ifs” in there.

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Steven H Brown, That’s all well and true. At one point I had argued it be better for the Kings had Phoenix won that game versus losing, even if it meant we wouldn’t be in the top 8. In the long run that would of been better for the Kings. You say if the Kings lose certain games maybe they won’t make the playoffs or win the division, but those teams still have to win there other games (non-kings) for that to work. I fell the way they are playing the Kings are the only team able to run the table. They also don’t play any of the other teams except San Jose and Calgary. Calgary has kinda fell off losing 2 valuable points to Columbus and Colorado. Dallas I sincerely doubt is going to run the table as they play Calgary twice, San Jose twice and Vancouver twice plus Nashville and St Louis. If they come out of those games unscathed then they so richly deserve to win the Pacific. I, however, have absolute faith that they will not win all heck I feel they will probably only win half, 4 or 5 of those. Meaning the Kings would need to win just 6 out of 9 to win the division. We will see what happens. Kings are playing there best hockey of the season and they have developed a killer instinct. They are going to be very tough to beat.

@Jeff_R, finally…we waited long enough to see some desperation out of this team…but, having stated that, I am not sure this team is playing desperate…they look more confident than desperate…and still the effort level is up there…I honestly think (like you) they have turned the corner…like I stated above…FINALLY!

    Deke'r Reply:

@Jeff_R, ….tell you what…if the Kings do knock off the Blues and the Bs, I’m definitely on board in thinking they will go deep in the playoffs…

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Deke’r, I believe they will win both. Although if you look at the top 8 teams now and the 2 or 3 other teams that might make the top 8 the Kings have a winning record against them. Except for the Avs and Wings they do. Avs may not make it and if they do, they haven’t played the Kings as they are now. Who knows if the Avs could beat the Kings as they are now in a 7 game series. The same with Detroit with all there injuries. They better win a few games or so if they want to stay 4th through 6th, as teams are rapidly gaining on them.

Looking at the top 8 and who the Kings might face. I would have no problem playing Chicago, Dallas, St Louis, Vancouver, SJ, Phoenix in a 7 game series. I think the Kings can beat them all. Nashville and Detroit I wouldn’t be so confident as the Preds have Radulov now which can counteract the kings getting Carter. Detroit you just don’t know how they will be. The Avs are also an unknown as we didn’t play well all year against them, although we are a different team now.

I was at the game last night. I couldn’t wait to talk about how excited I was watching the game. Kings Charles and I had a great day hanging out together, met up with Shot on goal, and a friend, and ate some food at the Farm (across from Staples Center).

We enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere, and watching all the beautiful Kingsfans show up to support their team. Watched a hell of a game. Met up with Kopi Bryant, and his beautiful girlfreind. Kc23 and his wife. puck73 and his wonderful girlfreind as well.

We jumped on the train to head back to Long Beach, all the while just being stoked about the game.

Then the train suddenly came to a complete stop, right in the middle of nowhere. Then the engine cut off. Then the lights turned off. A voice came over the loud speaker and said “I’m sorry ladies and gentlemen for stopping, but someone has just jumped in front of the train”.

At first, I thought “well then, tell that idiot to move”, that was before I realized the severity of what had just happened. King Charles and I spent the next few hours stranded on that train with some extremely lively characters. We all shared some laughs, and we all were frustrated at being held so long with no way to get out of this situation.

Sadly at the time, “inconvenience” seemed more the consensus of all the passengers, but as we were off loaded off the train, and onto another, a somber mood took over. No more complaining. No more self interests. Just time on that last little ride out of Watts to reflect.

Day started out as a great day to be a Kingsfan, but ended with a different appreciation for the wonderful things in life that some of us have to look forward too. I suppose I’ll read about this person who ended his life so tragically, and wish that this person could of just for this day, had the kind of day King Charles, and I were having.

@nykingfan, That’s exactly what ticked me off too. It’s bad enough that i have to watch a Sharks feed, but does the entire broadcast have to be slanted towards the Sharks what they didn’t do well… it’s like the Kings were just idly sitting and got gifted a win.

It made me think a lot about the way coverage is done. I’m not sure who JR and the NBC guys really appeal to… real fans probably don’t like them, and the borderline fan probably feels they’re saying a bunch of nonsense. I mean I don’t have to be a golf expert to know that when an analyst spends a lot of time talking about his opinions mixed in with how exciting he thinks something is – i just get bored and move on. Instead they should do what HNIC tries to attempt, which is having a more thoughtful discussion that may alienate some passerby fans (who arguably don’t watch much hockey anyway to be a real ratings number) but will over time elevate people the quality of dialouge to actually make it worth airing on TV.

I don’t learn more about hockey when i watch NBC/VS studio people
I learn while watching other games, Bob & Jim, and frankly reading this blog

My parallel would be the NBA, I learn a lot when i listen to TNT (and even NBA TV) watching their studio shows. Kenny and Charles are smart and thoughtful and frank, but do so without trying to be attention seeking. Pretty fine line distinction versus say JR

Havlat is actually the only good thing about the Sharks right now. For whatever reason, they have become horrible. I’ve actually been watching NHL Game Center to scout the 6 teams vying for the three playoff spots. San Jose is the worst. We are so lucky they are playing like crap when we had 3 remaining games against them out of 10. II wish we now had 9 games left against the Sharks. Columbus looks better right now. The Sharks game against the Ducks was one of the sloppiest displays I’ve seen this year (despite their desperate situation). I wasn’t nervous for a second last night. It was surreal to sit in my seat and just know from the opening faceoff that we would handle a team I had previously been afraid to play. The Sharks knocked us out last year. We will knock them out this year. If I’m Dustin Brown, I slide on my back across the ice through HP Pavilion after we destroy them on 4/7. Anyway, I feel sorry for Havlat bringing his A game every night, and the rest of his team is playing like crap. His salute was probably a manifestation of that frustration. Only if I were him, I’d be giving the finger to my bench for their utterly lackluster play.
