Drew Doughty’s postgame thoughts…
(on the game…)
DOUGHTY: “I think the team showed a lot of character tonight. We started that first period really hard, and I thought we really dominated them. I think that was a big reason why we won the game. We were really disappointed with that loss in Detroit. We never should have lost that game, so to come out here and have a good three periods, it was a big win.’’
(on the good starts to games recently…)
DOUGHTY: “That’s one thing that Darryl is always harping on us about, is to come out hard and get on the forecheck, bang some bodies and let the other team know that we’re not going to hold back and we’re going to be the hardest-working team out there. So we’ve done a great job of that in the last couple games, and I think it’s really key to our success.’’
(on fending off Detroit’s second-period charge, and the Kings’ consistency…)
DOUGHTY: “I thought we were great throughout all three periods, and when we weren’t, Quickie came up big every time. He’s been doing that all year for us, and in that second period he kept us right in there. And then killing off that 5-on-3 was just a huge momentum boost for us. Then getting that goal on the power play was huge as well.’’
(on Kopitar’s shorthanded goal…)
DOUGHTY: “That was a great individual effort by Kopi there. I actually didn’t think it was even going to get a shot off, and then the next thing you know, it was in. Kopi never seems to seems to surprise you. He did a great job there and got our team going.’’

If the Kings can bring it this way every game, they have a good chance of winning most of their remaining games.
With the specialty teams firing on all cylinders, this part of the game can be a real differentiator for the Kings.
I get the sense that this team is not far from going on a tear – winning something like 9 or 10 of 12 or so.

I really like Martinez and VV on the 2nd PP points; BOTH guys are always head-up and looking to make passes or shots that can be tipped in close, something JJ never seemed to do. DD should watch them and learn.
Who would have thought our best guy on the boards would end up being King, who I for one neveer thought would make it in the NHL. Shows what a year of maturing and confidence can do!

He also got in on a few forechecks where he used his size and reach to establish possession and gain us some O-zone time. Fred Roggin however usually does show the Kings and has stories on them. I watched ABC last night 11:00 news and they didn’t even mention the Kings beating Chicago. As for NBC the only one I have really seen that seems to have it in for the Kings is Milbury. The others have been more complimentary including Roenick. By the way wasn’t Milbury the GM when Taylor made the Palffy trade? Maybe that is what pissed him off, how he was taken in that trade and hates the Kings ever since.

@Jeff_R, Jones seems to get his shots in at the Kings when he can.
I posted this under the game story but it was probably more appropriate here:
DD might not “suck” in the true sense of the word, but take a look at the top ten D in the league right now and you’ll find 2 guys on entry-level contracts (under 1M/year) pulling 69 and 43 points at +15 and +17, and aside from Campbell, Chara, and Weber, nobody on that list is making a ridiculous amount of money for what they are contributing.
[Reply]
Jeff_R Reply:

@Anh, Do you think those 2 guys that are under entry level deals that have 69 and 43 points would have that many points if they were on the Kings? There is no way they would have that many points based on the way we played our first 58 games or so. Look at the teams they play for and then look at the Kings and try to compare. You can’t.

Dominick Reply:

@Jeff_R,
Exactly correct. DD is the Alpha male on this teams defense, and would be on almost any team in the league eventually. He is scoring at the maximum he can under this system, but if you put hm on another teams system, he would become the big minute defenseman for that team, and produce the maximum there too.
DD will always be the top scoring defenseman on whatever team he plays on, he just happens to be on a team that has been 30th in scoring most of the season.

@Dominick, I am hoping if Sutter is still the Coach next season that he opens the offense even more while keeping the defensive structure in tact. I feel we will have even more skill and talent next season that we will continue our output offensively since Carter and Voynov at an even greater level.
Anh Reply:

I would tend to agree with you guys a bit more if DD was a defensive genius in lieu of providing offensive production, but he’s not. I mean, he’s not /horrible/ at -2 for the season but definitely not at the level where it justifies the salary. Yes, it’s harder to bump up your +/- rating when your team doesn’t score in general, but at the same time, when a LOT of the games this year have been decided by one goal, being at a modest +2 could have made all the difference.
The guy’s got some skills for sure, but maybe D isn’t the right position for those skills.
King Cobra Reply:

@Jeff_R,
You guys and your system thing. We beat the Wings with 5 goals last night with our “system”. It’s all about players executing and finishing. Carter comes to our team and still scores goals, because he executes and finishes.
90% of this system thing is just a big excuse for when the players don’t skate, execute and finish.
Our team kicked ass last year with the “system” and if you add a healthy Kopitar + swap a healthy Richards (minus Simmons) to last years team we win the cup!! Maybe…
We need to stop making “system” excuses and push our players to skate, execute and finish!

@King Cobra, I think it’s been a combination of practically all the talent being at “natural center” on offense and TM stressing defense at the expense of offense. When Sutter came in, we at least saw an increase in tempo and some novel attempts to improve the offense, instead of some insipid “patience.” That, and you can see how much it helped just to get one bona fide sniper into the system. Just imagine if we can actually get Gagne going as well!
Thought Doughty played one of his better if not his best game of the year. Played solid defesively,contributed offensively and made sound decisions.The shot from the point that found the range was a bonus!Keep it up! Go Kings Go!!!
