Rooting interests get complicated

The Kings find themselves in a bit of an odd situation these days, in terms of rooting interest. Two nights ago, they pulled hard for the Buffalo Sabres to beat the Anaheim Ducks. Tonight, arguably, they want the Ducks to beat the Calgary Flames. The Kings, in ninth place, are one point ahead of 11th-place Calgary and six points ahead of 13th-place Anaheim. While a Ducks win would make the entire situation tighter, the primary motivation is probably to keep as few teams between you and a playoff spot. If Calgary beats Anaheim tonight, that’s two teams the Kings have to beat out instead of one (at least in the short term). Then, of course, the Kings host the Ducks tomorrow at Staples Center. That, more than anything, is the focus of Darry Sutter and the Kings.

Here are tonight’s relevant games…
No. 6 Chicago at Ottawa
No. 12 Minnesota at No. 2 Detroit
No. 8 Dallas at No. 14 Edmonton
No. 11 Calgary at No. 13 Anaheim

SUTTER: “It’s going to come down to head-to-head series, how you did in your division, how you played against certain teams and how many points you got. It’s not much more than that. If you look at the teams we play, that are right with us, we’ve got a tough schedule.’’
