Saturday skate update

Darryl Sutter said he expects Jeff Carrer to play tonight, on a line with Mike Richards and Dwight King, and Carter will also get power-play time. Slava Voynov will also go into the lineup and Jonathan Quick starts in goal. Colin Fraser is expected to center the fourth line, and Sutter will choose two wingers from the trio of Kyle Clifford, Jordan Nolan and Brad Richardson, with Kevin Westgarth as the healthy scratch. Here’s how the Kings are likely to line up…

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
King-Richards-Carter
Penner-Stoll-Lewis
Clifford/Nolan/Richardson-Fraser

Scuderi-Doughty
Mitchell-Voynov
Martinez-Greene

    @KC23, Wrong. Clifford needs to be on the ice learning from the mistakes he made. Remember he is only 21 and sitting him down will kill his confidence. Yes he made some mistakes, but he never takes a shift off.

    Westy/Fraser/Nolan would be a big physical line!

    [Reply]

    Neil Reply:

    @Cruiznblue, Clifford is more physical than westgarth. Westy is not near as talented as any other player on the team. He goes out only for fights and picks bad times (like in the Phoenix game when they were having a great offensive shift). Clifford can fight better and knows how to hit. Doesn’t just skate into the person. Westy should always be a healthy scratch.

    Cruiznblue Reply:

    @Neil,

    I dont know if you can say Clifford has been any better than Westy over the lsst few weeks. Some of Clifford’s turnovers lately have been awful…just not smart plays at an NHL lvl…

    Duckbasher Reply:

    @Neil,

    Totally agree. KW seems to be a super nice guy. But with that said, I don’t want our enforcer to be the nicest guy on our team. He plays with no edge at all, he doesn’t hit and he doesn’t score. Why he’s even on our team befuddles me.

    @linny, you must be shrooming. You can say the rest of the team is under performing but at least they have performed in the past. Pancakes has had every coach and GM he has played for complain about his desire, performance and work ethic. That about says it all about him as a player.

We unfortunately have 3rd and 4th line guys who can’t seem to score ANY goals (at least the top 6 guys score sometimes right now). IceGuy Reply:

    @puck73,
    Puck, I think there is enough “readjusting” for the Kings to work thru right now. Our over-arching problem is on Offense, not so much the D. Many have gotten their wish to have VV back as a regular. What they don’t seem to consider is that they’re depending on this Rookie to better Jack Johnson, not merely replace him. I don’t know if that’s reasonable or not.

    As Lombardi has gone about as “all in” as he can, at least for tonight, and as much as I don’t like saying it, Dustin Penner should probably be on Kopi’s LW tonight. Maybe, just maybe the team’s situation might rekindle a little of the offense Penner showed when he first got here and played in that position.

    Carter with Richards is a no brainer.

    @Jay GoLAKings, I’ve got a better idea… We make Penner the host at the Culver City Ihop. Pancakes seem to be the only thing this guy is passionate about. We get Kopitar to an assertiveness training program. Brown is presented with a navigational system that allows him to move east and west instead of just heading north and south in a straight line. Stoll works on a fishing troller so he can be introduced to the back of a net. Williams is entered into the Tour de France after spending an entire season cycling the puck in the corners.

    Wasabinuki Reply:

    @Jay GoLAKings,

    Penner – Kopitar – Williams
    This line has worked well in the past, and to my recollection has not been used since the trade deadline last year.

    King – Richards – Carter
    King provides the physical presence and seems to have a bit of chemistry with Richards. Throw Carter into the mix and it’s a very capable 1b line.

    Lewis – Stoll – Brown
    Brown is a 3rd liner that is among the league leader in hits. Pair that with your best faceoff guy in Stoll, a very smart/defensively responsible Lewis, and you have a line that can shut down opposing team’s #1 lines. These guys also have enough skill to fill the net once in a while.

    Clifford – Fraser – Nolan
    Kind of a grind it out, physically punishing, get under the opposition team’s skin line.

    PP#1
    Brown – Kopi – Carter
    Doughty – Voynov

    PP#2
    Penner – Richards – Williams
    Martinez – Stoll

    @Alex, That’s what I think. Spread the talent and make more lines dangerous. I feel like Kopitar line gets shut down because there is no worry about the other lines. Really like Nolan and King, but don’t we have more offensive talents in the AHL? If Gagne returns we might be even more dangerous and have the depth we are lacking. If he can’t return, maybe DL can find another former Flyer to make an impact in the offseason.

    Penner is useless (many would put the period here) unless he plays with a legitimate playmaker. He can make himself available for a pass in the offensive zone and he can finish. That is what he has to offer. He will be awful with Stoll and Lewis. I think switching him with Brown gives us the best chance to win. Brown doesn’t need a playmaker, most of his goals are self generated. 3 lines with skating, size and scoring potential. And if we aren’t willing to put Penner with Kopi or Richards because of attitude or effort, then he should sit. Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.

    Pumpernicholl Reply:

    @Kenny44, I see your reasoning, the only problem I have is that when there are man advantages there would be too much line juggling during and immediately following the power play. You wouldn’t want Brown to lose PP time in favor of Penner.

    PP Anybody? Reply:

    @Pumpernicholl, I’d rather see Penner at least given a chance on the PP 1st unit. I’d be fine with Brown on the 2nd. They aren’t scoring goals and the PP has been ineffective. Time to switch things up. Penner has been a PP guy, and hasn’t been used that way with the Kings. Couldn’t hurt anything to try.

    I’d say give Richards’ line a crack at the #1 spot…Kopi has been a dud lately.

    @Shuchuk, We have 2 first lines, line 1a and 1b. It really isn’t 1st and 2nd line.

    Shuchuk Reply:

    @Jeff_R, with the lack of scoring this season I’d say we have two SECOND lines. 2a & 2b.

    Brown King, Penner, Nolan are the boys to park it in front and wreak havoc around the crease. then let the other boys charge the slot. I want to see a 6-1 romp to get the confidence back. Toews is out as well as some others. Mathematically, we should absolutely dominate this game. We need to send a message – “we’re baaaacckkk!!!!’

    CHI will be focuse on Carter to tell the Kings Carter ain’t gonna save you. This means Richards and King gotta take advantage of that. Lewis and Richardson or Nolan gets a goal tonight, as does King. Carter gets eithre a goal and 2 assists or 3 assists. Kopi gets a goal.

    GKG!!!!!

  39. PP Anybody? says:

    I’d just like to note that part of the reason CLiffy and others have been making bad turn overs, is because they are following the system regroup behind the net in our zone. Thing is, it’s such an automatic for these guys now, they sometimes blindly do it expecting someone to be there for them, which isn’t always the case. There have been multiple times where the puck could’ve been worked forward out of the zone over the last few games with better success, yet they rag back to try and regroup backwards allowing the other team to come in, instead of pushing forward and forcing the other team to fall back. Drives me crazy.

    I am very confused .. reading the views on penner (on a daily basis)
    a) Get Rid of him b) let him ride pine or c) if he plays he can only play 1st Line with Kopi ?

    I would have to say Richardson is out tonight KC-CF-JN

    [Reply]

    Kenny44 Reply:

    @hockeynerd, That’s right. What’s confusing? Penner is not an energy guy. He’s not a checker or grinder. You may want him to be, but he’s not. The time of treating all of our forwards as fungible parts is over. Either play him where he might help the team win based on his ability to contribute or don’t play him at all. Deserve’s got nothing to do with it at this point in the season. Can you help the team win? That’s the only question. Remember Peter Klima? He was a high skill head case but the Oilers used him to devastating effect because they would send him out at the opprtune moment and he scored some of their most important goals. I’m not happy with Penner at all. I certainly don’t want back. But we need to allocate the resources we have.

  43. UglyinLA says:

    Look at the starting lineup, We have two top centers (Kopitar, Richards) We have two top RW (Williams, Carter) We have no top LW Gagne could be but he is hurt. King has potential. Brown is lousy at LW. Penner sucks. Richardson lacks finish. CLifford appears lost in the woods. Lokti sucked at LW. Lewis was decent but just didnt click with the top two. So yes, we have a big hole on LW.

    If it was the GM, I’d package Brown and Penner with Tafolli and another prospect and dangle that out there. I’d swap Bernier with Brown but I think we need to keep Bernier because something is up with Quick. You’d think he would have signed an extension if he wanted to be here. Quick’s non-commitment hurts the Kings because we dont know if we can trade Bernier away or not.

    Shuchuk Reply:

    @UglyinLA, dude, they can’t resign Quick until AFTER this season. thems be the rules.

    UglyinLA Reply:

    @Shuchuk,

    Is that because Quick is not in his final year of his contract?

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @UglyinLA,

    Yes, even if Quick wants to resign right now, he can’t. Have to wait until next season for that.

    Paul G Reply:

    @UglyinLA, Toffoli will probably head to Manchester next year…and the RWers will be Carter, Williams, Lewis, Westgarth sometimes, maybe Nolan and Brown sometimes

    As for th LW, Gagne, Clifford are the only full time wingers, sometimes Brown and Richardson, maybe King…….Kitsyn will still have more year in the KHL

    [Reply]

    PP Anybody? Reply:

    @UglyinLA, We have no offensive prospects coming up through our system that legitimately have potential other than Toffoli. I would not trade the only one we have.
