Brown postgame quotes (Feb. 25)

Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts…

(on the game…)
BROWN: “It was a really complete game. Given the last, probably, 10 games, where we’ve been really struggling, I think it’s important for us to realize what we did tonight and what it took to play that way. We’re fighting for a spot right now. We need to be happy with that game, but also understand why we performed as well as we did.’’

(on the special-teams effort…)
BROWN: “Our power play got some goals, and I think our PK was probably the most impressive thing. We had to kill off penalty after penalty. You’ve got guys blocking shots, doing all the little things that make the PK successful.’’

(on what was different tonight…)

BROWN: “I think our preparation. Everyone is capable of playing. It’s more about getting prepared the right way, and that’s as individuals and as a team, collectively. When you see that we’re prepared right, you don’t see the turnovers, you don’t see the little mistakes that make a big difference over the course of a game. We didn’t make very many mistakes tonight.’’

(on his hat trick…)
BROWN: “I hope to build on it. I think we’ve been struggling as a team, and I’ve been struggling personally, to score goals. It definitely felt good to score some goals tonight, and hopefully build on that. As a team, we’ve just got to focus on what I just touched on, getting into those scoring areas. I think if we get into those scoring areas more often, we’ll start scoring goals.’’

(on hearing his name in trade rumors…)
BROWN: “I’ve been a King my whole career and I expect to be a King beyond the next few days. … It’s my responsibility to prepare myself the best I can and tonight felt good.”

    Kings x Reply:

@jacky boy, Not sure about your definition. I’ve always known it as one player three consecutive scores uninterupted by goals from team mates or other team. Does not have to be in one period. Reference me if you have it

    KingMe20 Reply:

    @jacky boy,

Natural hat tricks are three goals uninterrupted by other goals. They do not need to all come in the same period.

Here’s an article about Jeff Carter’s natural hat trick against Carolina last season. He scored a goal in the first, and then two in the second:

@jeffreyryan, Not just tonight, he played great in the last game also. That brings up a point then, how come so many games where we didn’t get much results from him? For the “right” player I would trade Dustin. I love him as a player and think he is a classy guy, but why wouldn’t a team try to upgrade their talent if they can? Dustin is the captain, he needs to lead by example EVERY game, not just after being ripped by the coach or when his name is involved in trade rumors. I don’t expect 3 goals a night, I don’t expect one goal every night, I do expect 100% effort and focus from the captain. If Dean was just trying to light a fire, it worked, but lets hope it continues.

    Great game Dustin!

Great game Dustin Brown. What a way to end your stay in LA if that is what comes to be. You are the Captain and deserve to wear that C on your chest. You gave 100% each and every night regardless of whether or not you were 100% physically and led by example. You are the only remaining member of the 2003-04 team you were drafted onto. It angers me when I read the disrespectful remarks some make about you on this site. You’ve struggled some this year but so have many others. If you are traded, all the best to you. If you stay, DO NOT give up that C on your jersey to anyone. Let them earn the damn thing just as you did.

BROWNIE….It’s ok not to always say “we” need to be better….It’s ok to be selfish and think about your self sometimes. YOu have to play better…and Kopi should say that about himself. you never hear Kobi Bryant say we as much as he says “I have to play better” After a while it rubs off…..

    [Reply]

    wes Reply:

@tellmeY, it’s specifically a team captain’s job to talk “we”. “we” is what a captain is for. there is no “i” in team. Brown is the classiest guy on this roster. and after Quick, the most effective. may be in the process of leading the team in goals score for the 3rd time in the last 5 years.

    [Reply]

  26. King Cobra says:

Lack of Consistency is my only problem with Brownie.

If he played like this all the time you would not be able to say he is not a top six forward because you would have to say he is a top three forward!!

  28. goldielocks says:

Brownie showed his potential to be a pure goal scorer tonight. Not just a power forward everyone thinks he is but has a scoring touch in it. When you look at how he scored the goals, right handed left winger sees the space, cuts to the middle and pick the corner, on the rebound, forehand – backhand(with no panic … I’m looking at some players you know who), on the breakaway, nice little tap with soft hands between goalies legs(again with no panic), those are the kinds of goals all those 30-40 goal scorers around the league showing off on the highlight reel. Brown is still not at his prime. He still have tons of upsides at age of 25. Brian Burke wants him? In your dream!

    [Reply]

    jacky boy Reply:

@goldielocks, I dont think Brown can be a 35 goal scorer but I wouldnt trade him bc his cap hit is great and he can score 25 goals. Def a great 2nd liner

    @goldielocks,

“pure goal scorer” is hyperbole. you gotta admit.

    [Reply]

    KingsATX Reply:

@TiredOfIt, For 2x the money, it’s Kopitar and Richards that should have the 25-30. Look at $/goal – Brown is definitely not the problem.

    KingsATX Reply:

@TiredOfIt, Hardly one game, his 6 GW goals (career high, team leading) might jog your memory… especially when compared to: Kopi=1, Richards=0, Williams=0, etc.

  34. Yellow Pants says:

Did anyone notice that Brown didn’t do his “jump on the ice and start steam rolling people” thing. Normally, that’s his routine. He forechecks hard and finishes his checks almost every shift… I was there and I didn’t notice that tonight. He was acting more like a center thinking about scoring and creating chances .. than about runs at people (which I’m not saying is a bad thing). Maybe that made the difference.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

@Yellow Pants, I remember a hit or two but yes, that might just be the key right there. If Jordan Nolan can be coaxed into that role of offensive-hitter-in-chief, along with measured support from Kyle Clifford, it would sure free up Brownie to do what he does next best, but what we sorely need him to do best!
And that is to score prolifically going forward, just as he did tonight!!

    [Reply]

  35. Duncanz says:

On a truly great night for Dustin and the Kings, the only thing that bothers me is the comment that the difference for this game was that they prepared the right way. So what’s been going wrong in the area of preparation for so long and why hasn’t it been rooted out and addressed before now?!! That should really be a part of the captaincy thing as well as the coaching.
As far as the minimizing of mistakes and turnovers, this game was certainly a night and day difference from so many of the performances of recent weeks that have placed us in grave danger of being out of the play-off reckoning altogether.
I’m going to celebrate this rousing victory, but really hold the hope that the ‘preparation’ for the remaining 20 games will
be just as impressive as was displayed vs Chicago.
With the West being once again so super-compressed at the make-or-break end of the standings (Positions 3,6-13), and an ever tougher schedule coming up right now, The Kings are really, really going to need it to be!!

    [Reply]

  36. von_swine says:

prolly should sit on Dusty and see if he takes his ‘C’ for real. bringin in Carter, dishing out JJ, this might get our Cap’n into the gear he needs to find his best game. if a trade for DB is imminent, then do it in the off season and give him his due diligence of these remaining games of the season/playoffs out of respect. he’s far from our best captain, but the dude hasnt always had much around him. always have respect for what he’s tried to do for this team over the years. go Kings!

Voynov was awesome too. What did he have, 3 or 4 shots on goal, and not one single head fake? :)

I think he only missed the net once or got it blocked. Thats awesome.

Stoll was a beast. Even pancakes looked good – looked like he could have had his own hat trick tonight.

I think now any and all pressure is off Penner, he might actually perform much better. We’ll see. If he can mange 10 goals in the last 20 games, he might save himself a roster spot.
