Johnson posts about move

Even amid the craziness of being traded, Jack Johnson probably had to laugh at the idea of being a University of Michigan man and being traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team that plays just a few miles away from Ohio State University. Still, Johnson has made the transition quickly, as his official website this morning had already be redone in Blue Jackets fashion, including a message to fans. The link is below, along with a link to a Columbus Dispatch item on Johnson. Johnson did not play tonight against Columbus.

@jeffreyryan, class act JJ is and he will be missed. He managed his own 7 yr contract with us last year clearly telling us he wanted to be a King and now we banish him to Columbus. After Doughty finally signed this year, I pictured #3 and #8 being in LA for awhile, like Blake and Zhitnik could have been, but here we are again, the front office trades it away. Carter you better be worth bro!!!!!!!!! Farewell JJ #3!

    Bama Kings Reply:

@DaveinSD, Kings, like most die hard loyalist fans, over value their assets. But how do you not value JJ? Statistically, Dean L. should be given a parade for the deal he just made. Carter is the scoring talent we haven’t seen in… well like Quick is the goalie talent we haven’t seen in…

What nags at us is we don’t trust Carter. Penner hurt us. He damaged our belief in the rebound story.

    Penner is no Carter.

And from professional stand point, Carter is no Johnson. Jack is being dealt to an inferior team, dead last. His attitude makes you think he was just dealt to Boston.

Carter is no Johnson in that right. Lucky for us, he’s coming to a better situation with a group of guys he knows and loves.

Truth – I would have like to seen DD dealt. Bernier and DD for Carter and X player – keep the pick for the depth move next.

I think trading DD for Carter is one talented debutant for another, except we get form under that crap contract DD has.

So… Good luck to a class act in JJ. You’re on my fantasy roster, so go kick some MFA, JMFJ.

As fans, we should be very excited about Jeff Carter.

    Zorzi Reply:

    @Bama Kings,

You can’t be serious the only way you include DD in trade with Blue Jackets is if you are getting Nash back one for one, or maybe they need to include additional pick with that.

If this is frustration speaking from expecting DD to show more this year OK, otherwise … ah nevermind.

    ToughD Reply:

@DaveinSD, JJ cut down on the risky plays which boosted his plus minus. Still mistake prone in his own zone though

Ugh. While I’m excited to see what Carter can bring to our offense, something about this move just seems so wrong. I don’t think Dean considers this move for even one second if we’re in a better position and his job is not on the line. Here’s Carter, a guy who, while talented as hell, has developed a reputation as a prima donna and party guy, signed for another decade. And here’s Johnson, a homegrown kid who, while not without a lot of struggles, has always striven to become better and help the team win, signed at a low rate for multiple years. And we’re trading who for who here?

Something just feels totally wrong about this. Hopefully I’m wrong, Carter lights it up along his former team mates, and we easily replace Johnson’s puck movement from the blueline. But I don’t know. This just still feels crappy.

I used to post a lot on this blog, but in the last months all the negative comments turn me off from even reading them, but this trade bothers me.

While I think Carter is going to be a great fit and the Kings offense will awaken like a dragon, Jack Johnson reminded me of Daryl Sydor. Sydor was always being criticized and people forget that like Johnson, they were both young. Defense isn’t the easiest position to master. Doughty maybe far ahead in his development, but Johnson has all the tools and the talent to be a top defenseman. I can see Johnson blossom just like Daryl did with the Stars and become a premier defenseman.

He was a class act and a role player and I wish him the best. It hurts that you have to give quality to get quality, but I just wished it would have been some kid from the minors or someone else.

    Good luck Jack!

@Seattle757, Good to see you. Hopefully good times will come sooner rather than later.

    [Reply]

    Osaka Reply:

@Seattle757, That is a good comparison, Daryl turned into a solid defenseman who played 18 some years in the league and won 2 cups (different teams). I see JJ developing into that exact type of player. Not a superstar or even an all-star but a solid NHL player. Those types of D-men have value, that is why we were able to land Carter. A minor league player won’t land you a top level player, maybe a rental player at the deadline but not a player that will have value to your team for years.

Seriously, whoever sold him that site needs their head checked – it’s about branding JJ as a quality asset not twitter, wayin, facebook, videos, blogs, pictures, autographs, hugs, folksy mid-western charm, the quality quilts he makes, how well he mils goats, yadda yadda… good grief! JJ please spend some good money on a branding consultant and do it simply and well – the fluff is not serving you well. The site does not need to look like a million $ – it just needs to be concise, consistent and easy to maintain. And while your at it hire Mr. Hammond to write some good copy for you and have it over with. Good luck in Columbus.

Okay, I feel like this needs to be said… even though the Brown rumors have died down a little.

There’s a pretty noticeable divide here between people who love Brownie as a guy and would therefore hate to see him go and people who think purely in business terms and are adamant that the benefits outweigh the cost and don’t seem to understand why the former camp doesn’t understand that.

I guess I can only speak for myself, but as a member of the former camp, it’s not that my love for Brownie is the reason I think he shouldn’t be traded. It’s not that I don’t want to win. It’s not that I don’t know the business of hockey. I understand that hockey is a business and sometimes trades need to be made for the betterment of the team. I obviously want to win, or I wouldn’t really be much of a fan. My love for Brownie is simply the reason I don’t *want* him to be traded. I want to win with the players that I love, and fortunately, since I’m a fan and not a GM of this team, it is perfectly okay for me to have that mindset. If DL trades Brown, I will be absolutely devastated and winning won’t feel quite the same without him. If you don’t get attached to certain players on your team, I guess I just feel like why be a Kings fan? Why does it matter what team you root for if it wouldn’t break your heart to see its players traded away? What difference, then, is there between being a Kings fan and a San Jose fan? If we were to take all the players on the Kings and put them in Sharks jerseys and then take all the Sharks and put them in Kings jerseys, which team would you root for?

I love my team, and Brownie’s been an integral part of my team for years now. I want to win with my team, not with a jumble of random players we put in Kings jerseys and called them our team. Is that so wrong?

@FiG17, Interesting insight and your thoughts, thanks for sharing. I can understand people in your point of view a little better. Obviously from my opening remarks I come from the other camp. To be honest my early childhood was spent in Philly and I was a Flyers fan (Bobby Clarke fan too) but when I was in the 5th grade we moved to California, 1978. There wasn’t much hockey coverage in LA and my dad was taking me to Kings games so with the absence of the internet I was a full Kings fan by 1979.

I started playing hockey when I was 5 years old so I have always loved hockey from different levels: player, fans, coach, ref….. I love the game because it reminds me of childhood. I love the game because I remember some great friends I’ve played with. I love the game because my parents went to every game. I love the game because of the good times I had watching hockey. My parents have both since passed away but I remember watching Kings games with them. I remember my mom loving Bernie Nichols and then later loving Gretzky. I remember in high school going to the Kings games at the Forum with a couple friends every chance we got. I remember in 93 taking my parents to the cup finals. Hockey and the Kings are a part of my memories and my life. I have seen so many players come and go, each one I thought I couldn’t live without. I saw Dionne leave! What is bigger than that? Still hockey and my Kings were there. Dionne, Gretzky, Palffy….. it isn’t the players that make me a fan, it is my attachment to the team and love for hockey. The rink is my Field of Dreams. The Kings are the team that became a part of my family. I enjoy watching them play and when they do well it adds a little more fun. If moving a player on the team helps them, I am all for it. I am a Kings fan, not a fan of any particular player.

Not saying I am right, just what goes through my mind. The contrast of different types of fans, pretty cool!

    @Osaka,

That makes perfect sense. Obviously, I recognize that teams change… This team is completely different from what it was when I first became a fan, but that doesn’t mean I was thrilled when guys like Norstrom and Visnovsky left. I mourned it for a while (still think about them every now and then) but I did eventually move on and fell in love with other players. This would be the case if Brownie were traded, but that doesn’t make it any easier to see him go. Haha Honestly, my main point really was that I’m not the GM, so I feel like I’m justified in not wanting him traded. Lol

And thanks for your response… One of my favorite parts of this blog is getting so many different perspectives on things like this.

Awesome soul-baring stuff, both of you fellas!
I cant follow you guys so I’ll just add my tuppence worth, and that is to say this:
We couldn’t just fiddle while Rome burned. This season has trundled along excruciatingly, like a wobbly chariot on an ancient cobblestone street. Surely everyone else has felt the relentless jarring just like I have.
So serious measures needed to be taken and they have begun.
If we’re fans of our club, we swallow it bravely when our favorite player is traded and root for the new guy(s) without endless regrets or retrospective resentment. A little wistfulness or nostalgia is ok.
But there’s work to be done here and a cup to be shot for, always, every season, including this one.
There’s no cryin’ in Hockey. This aint Baseball.
Let’s be brave and be excited for what we have, and look forward to the future. It could be pretty thrilling!

This is really interesting because i feel the same way… except i feel that way about Bob and Jim! I was actually thinking the other day that When i started watching the kings in 1988 i was 10 years old> i havent missed a game since… but one common theme for all of these years has been Bob and Jim. I associate kings hockey with listening to them… what happens when Bob is gone… i wonder if i’ll have that same love for the team… I’m sure i will but it won’t be the same. It will be like watching other teams announcers on center ice… I just don’t have that same drive to watch the game when i don’t get the kings feed… I hope that makes sense i don’t feel the same about Brownie.. personally i would be testing the waters to see about packaging Bernier and Brownie… see what we could get. I just hope that the Kings win the cup… not for me or us but for Bob Miller, the man deserves to see a cup before he goes… the only sad thing will be that nbc sports will be broadcasting the finals and bob will not…. maybe they would let him do the games.. but then again i’m getting way ahead of myself!! Go KINGS

I am not sad to see Jack Johnson go, he has consistently had the worst plus/minus on the team for the last four seasons. That says a lot about his defensive abilities, but he does have a nice smile and is a classy guy.

The biggest unknown is the first round draft pick we gave up. Only time will tell if this was a good deal or not.

I was sad to see Jack “MF” Johnson be dealt. He is the most talented defensive forward that the Kings have. Doughty is still not there yet. I really hope Carter pans out, but last time I checked, adding one person to a team is not going to open the flood gates in scoring. It’s not like the Kings have a couple forwards that are in a scoring drought, it’s the ENTIRE FORWARD LINEUP!!! I will be really shocked that one person will change this team around. I think it’s more of a mental and systematic problem. I really don’t think one person can fix that. … but we will see. GO KINGS GO!!!!!

    Okay – reality check.
We now have King Carter and Columbus has “Jacket” Jack Johnson.
I wish Jack the very best in his NHL career. I wish for Carter to somehow ignite the Kings forwards.
At best, Jeff Carter will only play 1/3 of any game. Is that enough talent time to move the Kings up a now very steep playoff mountain? I sure hope so.
It will be fun to watch Carter apply some of his sniper magic to the Kings offense, but the reality is that the rest of our forwards have GOT to get it in gear and score.
Carter’s not going to be a hat trick machine just like Quick can’t be perfect 100% of the time.
Man up boys. For weeks now you’ve been watching the game.

Am I the only one that thinks that this move might also help DD? I expect him to step up and be more dominant now that he’s the primary offensive defenseman on the team. Also now Voynov is unquestionably a 3/4 d-man, that’s has to help his confidence. Hopefully we’ll see more of the Voynov that we saw when he was first called up.

Also with the addition of Carter, and if we can get Gags back, I think we have a legitimate top 6 again. I would love to see

    Penner – Kopi – Williams
    Gagne – Richards – Carter
    Nolan – Stoll – Brown
    Clifford – Fraser – King

Either DD will step up, or he will buckle under pressure. Remember him ‘trying to do too much’ earlier this season? *shudder*

@AZ King, Love your optimism, but how can you put Penner on the first line and still call it a legitimate top 6? Also, your second line LW is out – probably for the year, perhaps never to return. Even with Carter, we still have some gaping holes.

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @rick,

I was going to put another line on there, with Gags out, but I thought that would get to complicated. The bottom line with Penner is he is a legitimate 30 goal scorer in the league. Without Gags I would go with:

Brown – Kopi – Williams (It worked before, I think it can still work)

Penner – Richards – Carter (I think having Carter on the other wing is actually makes this a much better line than with Stoll on it. Carter can actually carry the puck into the zone and let Penner get his big body in front of the net. I think this line could be very dangerous if it gets going)

    King – Stoll – Nolan
    Cliffor – Fraser – Westgarth

Go look on you tube sometime at some of Rob Blake’s classic hits. Most players who got hit by Blake would be gasping for breath, or crawling back to the bench.

look at the standings. We are, I’m afraid, cooked. Those 1-0 losses to CBJ, PHX, CAL were devastating, and can’t be overcome. Hard to believe a team picked by many to compete for the Cup actually reached its high water mark in its opening home game, a 5-0 thrashing of STL. All this talk of deals to come can’t mask the fact DL was fleeced on Penner, Richards and Carter trades.

@callahan, The Kings are tied for 8th place with 21 games to go… They are only cooked if they don’t play better than the teams ahead of them. Their play of late certainly hasn’t inspired much confidence, but they are hardly “cooked”… I, for one, will be watching and rooting and hoping, but ultimately, they need to step it up and go on a winning streak. Dallas went from “cooked” to 8th place by winning 3 straight games… The Kings need to do the same…

I think we still have a hole we need to address. Maybe that is why Brown is being mentioned.

We need a LW. Nash is still available. What would it cost us? Bernier, Taffoli, and Penner (for obvious cap space reasons) I’ve always maintained that its risky trading Bernier without Quick signed to a longer contract. My opinion is that Columbus is rebuilding and wants prospects. We got lots of them. Lets trade.

I absolutely agree. We have two top centers (Kopitar, Richards) We have two top RW (Williams, Carter) We have no top LW Gagne could be but he is hurt. King has potential. Brown is lowsy at LW. Penner sucks. Richardson lacks finish. CLifford appears lost in the woods. Lokti sucked at LW. Lewis was decent but just didnt click with the top two. So yes, we have a big hole on LW. If it were me, I’d package Brown and Penner with Tafolli and another prospect and dangle that out there. I think we need to keep Bernier because something is up with Quick. You’d think he would have signed an extension if he wanted to be here. Quick’s non-commital hurts the Kings because we dont know if we can trade Bernier away or not.
