Quick postgame quotes (Feb. 22)

Jonathan Quick’s postgame thoughts…

(on the game…)

QUICK: “They seemed to care a little bit more than us tonight. That was the difference in the game.’’

(on whether he actively wanted to play, after last night’s disappointment…)

QUICK: “You always want to play. It doesn’t matter what happens. You always want to play. If you don’t want to play a game, you probably really don’t belong in this league. So, no matter what happens, you want to get back in there and you want to play.’’

(on the need for a strong final 21 games…)
QUICK: “Obviously we’re still right there. We still can make up ground and move up. That’s all we’re focused on. Obviously we didn’t play well tonight. We didn’t play nearly as well as we should have. As disappointing as that is, there are still 20 games left, a quarter of the season left to go, and we’re still in the mix. We need to play better.’’

What happened to him? Cost the team the game last night.
Huge turn over tonight. Dude needs to wake up.

@Snoop dogg, Doughty had an even worse turn-over/give-away than Clifford. That’s more upsetting than Cliffords brainfart.

    FKA PakiFro Reply:

    @Jorgen,

Doughty seems to be the best player the last two games. He clearly cares. I wish Kopitar and Richards would show the same determination because those two have the ability to put the offense on their backs.

@pesus, If management doesn’t care, why should they. Poor Quick, plays all night, goes to OT, loses, gets on a plane, sleeps for a couple hours, probably in pads, wakes up and goes right back in, backing up a team that has no legs, and is hung with a loss that belongs to Sutter. How fast do you think he’s out of town once his UFA time comes?

Bad Thought….That DL is fired and DS is moved up to replace him….

    [Reply]

    Kenny44 Reply:

@neil, I was thinking that earlier tonight, also, when people were talking about how Sutter would stay because AEG won’t pay for 3 coaching contracts (TM, DS, and new guy). They wouldn’t really be adding a contract if DL went out and DS stayed, would they?

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@Kenny44, That just might happen if they fire DL. Better hope they don’t fire DL. One of Sutter’s problems was he couldn’t find a center to play with Iginla. That was one of the reasons he made crazy trades and it all went nuts. In La with Richards and kopi he wouldn’t have to worry about that. Not that i want him as GM because I don’t, just bringing it up. I want DL to get one more year to work things out.

Feel bad for Quick, he’s carried more than his share of the load this season.
However, this is also a consequence of this organization’s mismanagement of their assets. It’s not like Bernier is incapable of playing 15-20 games and help to keep Quick fresh and on his toes.

After a tough loss in Phoenix, the team needed a pick-me-up. In this case, stubbornness is not good.

I blame Daryl Sutter for this. He has been riding Quick for a while now. Some of us on this blog have had a mild concern that Sutter better start playing Bernier from time to time or Quick might get burned out like he did a couple of seasons ago when Ersberg was riding pine the whole season thanx to that bafoon TM.
Anybody who has played hockey, or followed it long enough understands that catchers in baseball and goalies in hockey are the most taxing positions in all of sports because you have to squat and bend your knees alot.
I thought Sutter was smart enough to understand this, and DL powerfull enough to deliver this message to him in private. As alot of are finding out, this organization lacks alot of common sense, and since DL is the President and GM, The buck stops with him.

I honestly think that some of the people in power positions in hockey dont really know what they are doing///that happens in many sports though…big name, big hockey families, but no coaching smarts.

    Merv Reply:

    @jack,
Could not agree more about your comment regarding people in power positions that pretend to know what they are doing.

It happens at all levels mites through juniors through the pro teams. Coaches, scouts that talk the talk but are incapable of walking the walk. They blow smoke up anyones you know what that are willing to listen. They make statements about what they are going to do, e.g. Have Rob Blake mentor Jack Johnson on how to become a better defenceman. Where did that plan go?! Blake takes off and Jack Johnson becomes Hack Johnson left to his own ends. No one wants to acknoledge that Johnson is not a multi-million dollar player. Watch him at the blue.line, He can’t keep the puck inside the line to save himself? Same spinnerama move below the blue line, gets trapped, turns the puck over 1,2 puck is in the net, -89 -90, I don/t know, lost count of where his plus minus is now.
i’m sure Johnson is a great guy but not worth the salary that he is stealing! Most multi-million dollar players don’t make the kinds of mistakes the he does. Where are the big plays. Big dollars = Big Plays! Why wiould they let him take a penalty shot last night. look what happened. Shot it wide! Game commmentary by Bob Miller on Johnson taking shots during the season, ” Johnson shoots puck, goes wide to the right, shoots high, shoots lto the left of teh net, fans on shot, blocked shot, hits the post, hits the crossbar turns puck over at blue line but he’s our Franchise player. We are supposed to believe that because the people in power say so and they know better than the fans( Perhaps those people in power should sit up among the fans in the 300 sections and listen to what they yell and scream during the game when all they see is more of the same. Enough said!

BTW I think Quick and Bernier are both great goal tenders but I fell bad for Bernier riding the pine night after night especially after those people in power said that they would rest Quick during the season and not burn him out as someone else mentioned in these comments and what really chaps my you know what is when Jim Fox gets on Bernier’s case for letting in a goal in his first game back after sitting on the bench for fifteen plus games and then being expected to play the perfect game. Whereas, when a player comes back from injury and plays his first game and has a bad game all we hear are the excuses as to how he is not in game shape and needs to be given time to get back in game shape.

Here’s my take, do us all a favor, Bernier and johnson plus a first round draft pick (We’ll have one this year!) to the Devil’s for Parise. Brodeur is getting old but could mentor Bernier and Johnson could be a project for the team.

    That’s it I’m done!

    [Reply]

    zulov Reply:

@Jt22, JQ can probably snooze for 10 games before someone points a finger at him for all the great work he has done for the kings this year.

In respect to your point though, he wasn’t at his bet against PHX for sure, and that will happen now and again. All great gollies have mediocre outings and occasionally make mistakes.

He really should have had a rest after the PHX game, but Sutter wanted to be the good guy and try to show JQ that he has earned the right to decide for himself whether he plays or not.

That seems like a fatherly thing to do, but not necessarily a professional thing to do. Thats DS – he wants to be their dad, not their coach.

TM wanted to be their teacher, not their coach.

    We need a FRIGIN coach!

    [Reply]

    Jt22 Reply:

@zulov, Quick has ALOT of mediocre outings people are blinded by the big save in a game but neglect all the soft goals he allows. Quick has a tendency to give up goals in bunches ie. 2 goals in 2 minutes. It happens far too often and people don’t hole him accountable. He needs to spend less time complaining about everybody else and start working on his focus. Sometimes he allows a goal and looks like he’s given up! Every goalie gives up goals GET OVER IT. I admit I’m jaded by my belief that bernier is a top notch goaltender and has a far high ceiling that j quick, but my reasons for believeing that quick is as shaky and inconsistent as they come is true, most people won’t admit it but it’s true. 24-17-11 <—- that is not the decor of any superstar goalie. Shootout loses are on him it's one on one and it his responsibility to get a stop if even half of those loses are wins our record looks like 33-22-6, looks alot better doesn't it?

    [Reply]

    zulov Reply:

@Jt22, Is today opposite day? Are you really suggesting Quick is a mediocre goaltender?
Have you been watching the dozens of games this year when he gives up 2 goals or less and the Kings loose?

He is as good as it gets in the league. Bernier is a good gollie too, and I am sure would do well if starting, but JQ is awesome. The ONLY reason why his record is 24-17-11 cause we have the worst offense EVER!!!

Every gollie gives up soft goals now and again! And Bernier is no exception.
