Darryl Sutter’s postgame thoughts…
(on the game…)
SUTTER: “You give up three power-play goals on the road, you’re probably going to have a tough time winning.’’
(on losing momentum after the early penalty in the second period…)
SUTTER: “It’s an easy read. It’s not (about) the penalty. It’s an easy read. Kopi gets beat for the goal. It’s simple. Then, on tying one, Drew gets beat. These are easy plays, right? Kopi has got his man, and then loses him. They win a faceoff and they tie it. You can say it’s penalty killing, but penalty killing has been awesome. Those are plays that you (have to) make 5-on-5 too.’’
(on whether the Kings got too “loose” in the second period…)
SUTTER: “I don’t think so. I don’t think `loose’ had anything to do with it. As I said, they scored three power-play goals. They made it 3-2 on two power plays. We made it 4-2. I don’t think that had anything to do with it. It’s too bad. All those games Jonathan (Quick) has been in those low-scoring games, he doesn’t win a high-scoring game.’’
forget the penalty. That should have been a non factor. We were up by three.

@jefreyryan, This loss is a lot better then losing 1-0. If anything they can take out of it is that they can still score and finish. Hoping this puts a light in them and they take it all the way to April 7th and Pacific Division title. I have a lot more faith in them doing that now then I did before the game. Also I take out of the game that it is a lot more surprising the Kings giving up 4 goals (1 shootout goal) then it is that they scored 4.

@blackthrone, I actually think the Kings will win tomorrow night. The last time they lost a game like this that they should of won, Dallas, the next game they went into Calgary and won 4-1. I feel the biggest part about this game was the 4 goals scored. I think in the long run that will be huge. They will tighten the defense and hopefully not make many mistakes. Being up 3 after all those tight 1 goal games is probably a lot tougher then playing at 0-0, especially when it isn’t done very often. The Kings will learn from this and hopefully it won’t be repeated. I expect come April 7th we will look back at this game as the turning point of our season.

As for Ryan Smyth not having the A anymore probably means he is going to be traded, which means he is a hypocrite for not letting Dean trade him anywhere but Edmonton. I think you are staing the obvious and making everyones point for them. If SO many can go other places and score, maybe the reason they didnt score while they were here, is because they were HERE, playing in a offensively crippled system. There skills didnt suddenly blossom, their opportunities most certainly did. I dont think its necessary to bash an opinion, simply because its not yours.GKG

Should we not honor Kings anymore because they aren’t on the roster? That would be silly and I’m sure their trades were talked about for a while.
It also could be the fact that many of us miss Nighttrain.
Maybe because I’m constantly being reminded by Philly fans how happy they are with him.

Or doing so because they are doing well now and our team is doing sucky, as if they were still here we would be doing well. That is why most people bring up Simmonds or Moulson or Purcell. They have no other reasons to validate DL sucking except to mention 3 players he got rid of or let go and are doing well. Not saying that is what you did just stating in general and it has really struck a nerve. Anyway I think it is fine that you mention Wayne. I am happy for him that he is having a great season. So when people are simply honoring ex-Kings, as such, it can appear ambiguous and therefore might set folks off.

So no matter who comes to kings, my fear is their offense will struggle too
There is so much talk about the offense struggling because the focus is on D. That is bologna. The problem is the offense stinks, thats it.

@annoyed, With TM as coach we played 29 games and ended up with 30 points in those games. With DS we have played 27 games and have gotten a total of 32. So that means the Kings have done better under DS then they did under TM points wise. DS also has us 3 points behind San Jose/Phoenix. That will cut to 1 if they win tomorrow. The fact is DS was the right choice to make for this team. Had he brought in a different coach who would of brought in a different system, then it would of taken valuable time for the players to learn that new system which means we would of sucked longer and been in a bigger hole when we started playing better. It would of been a shock to the system to go from a defensive team to an offensive team. It was much easier for the Ducks to do so because they were basically playing a more offensive system, so it was much easier for them to change to Boudreaus system, even so it took them a while to get going and probably was too big a mountain to climb back from to a playoff spot. I am happy we stayed with the same system with just a few
tweaks. After the trade deadline we will be doing better. Then in the off season DS will change the Assistant COaches and bring in his own (Kompon gone and someone else in.) I do think he will keep Richards and Ranford. Then in training camp he will bring in a new system. One that is more offensive but still with our defense being tops. i mean our defense has been better with DS then with TM. As for Moreau and hunter if you think they were brought in for more then character veteran depth then you obviously had higher expectations of them. They were cheap guys who were brought in for depth and veteran help. remember we are still one of the youngest teams in the NHL.

@Jeff_R,
Your comment. “It would of been a shock to the system to go from a defensive team to an offensive team”.
It’s never too late, to make a change, IF, the change is in the right direction.
Not dealing with the fact that we’re 30th in scoring, is why we’re still 30th in scoring. If your not going to address the biggest issue to why the team is failing (and really there is no other issue) then why even fire Murray?
The Ducks had offense, but couldn’t stop goals from being scored on them. As soon as teams scored on them, they had a “here we go again” attitude. It has been well documented by the O. C. Register that the Ducks main focus for Budreau was to get them to commit to fixing their biggest weakness (defense), and their goals against since he became coach is like night and day.
I really do like Sutter, and the minor tweaks he’s made to the system has been refreshing, because if TM was here, he wouldn’t of done even 1/2 that much, but the system was garbage before Sutter got here, and not making comparable changes to what better teams in the league do offensively is irresponsible.
If your not going to completely address why their not really scoring, then that’s not really fixing the problem, it’s putting a band aid on it, till you can fix it later. At this point, I would welcome a fresh offensive commitment now, rather than wait till after the summer.

@Dominick,
It’s a shame really. Both you and I wanted so badly to be wrong about Sutter. He just isn’t the coach to change the offensive momentum of the team. Granato or Hynes would have been a better choice.
I really wish Sutter would have cleaned house immediately. Leaving the assistants in place is just a further illustration of a lack of intent to recognize the problem. Sutter came in and left the infrstructure that has been in place since Crawford (minus Mark Hardy). This will be DL’s undoing because he is ultimately responsible for the accountability of the coaches.
I’m just baffled by the lack of accountability on behalf of Lombardi. It’s like he doesn’t believe that the coaches can do anything wrong until they are called out by a 3rd party. The only two coaching staff firings since he was hired was Murray (called out by the fans and prognosticators) and Hardy (arrested for fondling his daughter inapproriately). Is this what it takes? If so, then let’s get rid of DL now. We have a great group of players who aren’t being properly molded.

Sorry, DS was not the right decisio for this team. For this group of talented players, we should be sitting on top of the Division witha comfortable 7-9 point lead and preparing for the play-offs. Under TM, we had stellar defense and goaltending but no offense. Under DS, we have exactly the same thing. Now that the other teams have figured out DS and his plays, which are reruns of what he ran years ago, we have become a completely predicatable team again. DL should have brought in someone younger, with fresh ideas. As I mentioned in an earlier thread, during warm-ups for thelast home game, more than half the team was off the ice before the 4 minute mark. That is not a good sign.

@Roger, Do you think that AEG is going to pay for 3 coaches? Think about that before you ever think about changing coaches. If the Kings were truly thinking about firing DL why would they allow him to sign Sutter to a multi year contract? Dave Tippet isn’t exactly the answer either. Phoenix isn’t that great and are only in 1st place now because SJ is totally sucking. Face it the Pacific Division this season hasn’t been that great. As for our 30th in the NHL who knew this team would be so totally offensively challenge that the whole team (minus defense and Quick) would have downer years. That has never happened. 1 or 2 guys yes not 15+ guys. The team that DL has put together should have them battling Detroit and Vancouver right now and way ahead of SJ/Phoenix.
This loss is on the players for being sloppy in a game well at hand after Period 1.
However, I also blame Sutter for being so hard-headed wrt Quick and Bernier. Can’t have it both ways – if you’re going to burn out Quick, he’ll have the occasional stinker – like tonight.

He is one of the best conditioned athletes on the team. Yes it didn’t work 2 years ago but that was his first full season in the NHL and he was used to playing just 35 or so games a season. @Jeff_R, It was not a stinker by Quick but certainly not a great game by him either. You cannot blame him as he is not perfect and can have an off game once in a while. Again, it was not a bad game by Quick but the 2nd and 4th goals were kind of soft in my opinion. The 2nd was a short sided goal as he left his post too soon, and the 4th was a bad judgement play, as he tried to poke check Vrbata, and it left him out of position.
What sucks is the fact that we score 4 goals tonight, and our wonderful goalie is not at his best. Just the luck of the Kings. That is all it is…bad luck/bad timing.
This team is so snake bit that we do not know how to react to any situation. We are so wound up inside that we cannot see straight.

@FdoFmFull, How do you think Quick had a stinker? If he doesn’t stand on his head this is a 5-3 loss in regulation. Back door pass when Kopitar is a spectator? Doughty, Green, Martinez getting deked out of their pants several times. NHL defensemen should not be beat wide – that’s why they are in the NHL. We win a faceoff with a one goal lead and two defensemen get beat to the puck? Coyotes had tons of “A” chances.
From my point of view this team looks like a bunch of brats who have been told how good they are all the time. Then it comes to showtime and they just don’t have what it takes to WIN. @Osaka, I really am glad the Kings had a game like this. I believe it will help them a lot more then a 1-0 loss would. In my opinion for this Kings team it was a lot more pressure being up 3-0 then it is tied 0-0. Losing tough games like this near or in the playoffs can really help you to learn how to win and be a better team. Case in point Vancouver 2 years ago came into Staples Center and the Kings whitewashed them 8-0 or 8-1. Vancouver came back in the playoffs and beat us in 6 games. Another one is Boston. They were up on Philly 3 games to 0. Philly then did to Boston what only like 1 other team has done in the history of the NHL come back and win in game 7. Oddly enough that Philly team had Richards and Carter, maybe a harbinger to come. Anyway back to my point Boston took that embarrassing loss to Philly, channeled it and went out the next season and won the Cup. So sometimes it takes getting beat bad or embarrassing that helps you become a better team. Will this help the Kings, I don’t know. I hope it will and I hope tonight is a turning point of the season.

The Kings have an inability to put together a win streak or play with a big lead. Something goes right and they get so happy with themselves and believe all the articles about how good they are and think they just need to go through the motions. We need this team to develop a killer attitude. They need to never be satisfied and always want more or to do better. Is it because we have “character” guys and not more selfish players? I want to see some players, with the man possessed eyes, who are just as hungry with a three goal lead as they are down one goal with two mins left in the game. I don’t see it.

@Jeff_R, Maybe Kopi is experiencing post concussion symptoms after that monster truck hit by Morrow in the Dallas game?
Or maybe he is just more cautious now after that?

@Jeff_R, I agree with you on Kopi but it not just him. Kopi didn’t give up the 3 goal lead by himself. Kopi wasn’t in the playoffs last season when the Kings had the monster meltdown. I want to see the whole team play possessed but yes Kopi should be leading the way. Give credit to Brown, the coach called him out and he lead the team with 6 hits, had a goal, and an assist.

@Osaka, At this point of the season, it’s sad that the coach has to call ANYONE out, let alone the CAPTAIN. There was a post earlier above saying we have too many charachter guys and not enough selfish ones. I think it’s just the opposite. Charachter guys don’t let back-to-back 1-0 and losing 3 goal leads happen, certainly not in consecutive games. DL’s track record in assembling teams in SJ and here shows he doesn’t care to or know how to evaluate charachter/heart as evidenced by the super talented Sharts always flaming way too early in the playoffs when he was there. And now this heartless bunch.
I don’t think the match penalty happened during the hit itself (which was clean), but rather in the scrum that followed. Did Clifford actually land a head butt on Yandle during the scrum (as I’ve seen two sources report)? If so, I think I might have found the match penalty.

Clifford – responsible for 2 goals but the first one is on DD, too. He could have used the board to get the puck out of the zone though. He knew he could do better so he tried too hard on 2nd one.
Doughty – He could have recovered the puck along the board but he let it go and Cliffy was in trouble because he wasn’t expecting it. That was a LAZY play, if you ask me. If he didn’t want to leave the area, he could have let Cliffy know but he didn’t. Lack of communication on his part.
Richardson – turnover machine once again.
Lewis – seems lost.
Lokti – too weak along the board, knocked off his feet so many times and lost the puck alot. Physically he’s not strong enough.
Mitchell – didn’t give a direction to the forward for the coverage. He and Stoll were on the same guy for the 1st goal.
Brown – not bad but when Richards hit the post he was on the other side, waiting for the puck. But instead of stopping the puck he swang at it and missed. The puck bounced off the board, and outnumbered attack to the other way. You can’t do that.
Greene – 2 penalties but when our defense is out of sync, he is the guy who has to take penalty. So it was acceptable I guess.
All in all, the lack of communication was all over the ice tonight. That was very uncharacteristic. What? You are comfortable with 1 goal game but with a big lead you can relax a bit and forget about how important the communication was? Screw you guys.
And Mr. Sutter. If you didn’t see the problem and take a timeout, you are just animated version of Terry Murray. You guys make DL’s job even harder ’cause he cannot justify the price incleasing of the season ticket other than bringing an exotic animal … no, not that …yes, the superstar. What are we? A circus team?
[Reply]
First goal Kopi didn’t pick up coverage on that guy who came down from the top, that wasn’t zone, Kopi’s man all the way. Mitchell had the front so he had Stoll’s guy or Kopi’s guy, hard to blame him on that. Other than that PK though I though Mitchell played out of his mind. I mean he really stood out as a force back on D and I distinctly remember one time where he broke up a breakaway from behind with no penalty called.
Brown lead the team with 6 hits, had a goal, and had an assist. Not many guys can stop a puck ricocheting off the goal post, not many goalies can. When a shot hits off the post a lot of times it is a break in the other direction from it, the post was a 2 point play.
Greene had to take penalties both times. Greene was the only guy back both times and he couldn’t let the faster better skater by him.

Agreed. Brown could have used his body to stop the puck though. What do you think about lack of communication? I thought that was pretty visible after they took 3 goal lead.

To sum it up at this time of the year. A lost point!
The strongest point of the Kings game is the part that let them down. PK wan’t very good. missed coverages, poor clearing attempts…that’s how you blow a point.
It certainly wasn’t JQ’s best game of the year, but to blame him after all he’s done is ridiculous. He didn’t look tired, just not as sharp as he usually is.
I’m not sure how the officials called Cliffy’s clean, legal hit intent to injur. He didn’t run the guy from behind. He didn’t get him with the elbow, he got him with the shoulder. I understand the league and it’s policy towards head shots, but that wasn’t a penalty in my opinion. that was a good, hard hockey hit!
The timing of the penalty couldn’t be worse. We also took too many penalties during the 2nd and 3rd periods.
Go figure..we finally score a bucket full of goals and still can’t come away with a W.
It was an extrememly frustrating 45 minutes of hockey topped off with a gimmick loss in the SO.
A points a point and I’m always happy with getting something, but this one doesn’t feel too good.
Thank God tonight’s another game and we can removes the stink of last night quickly. That had to be a brutal flight to Col after the game. It should have been an enjoyable flight.
Time to wipe the slate clean and get a big W tonight in Colorado.
Go Kings!

I wasn’t aware of that. The Phoenix announcers never mentioned that. They said it was on the hit.
What did he do to Yandle as he was being attacked to warrant a match?

Don’t know what warranted the penalty. I read someplace tho that Clifford may have head butted, but I’m speculating.

It’s been a tough 40+ years as a King fan. Since it is obvious there will never be a cup in LA during my lifetime, there is a positive side to it. LA will be spared all the looting, rioting, and car burnings that accompany a professional team winning a major title.
Just kidding– I still hold out hope for the purple, gold, black, silver, or whatever color the team choses next.

Sutter is losing Kopi. Anze looks like he’s pouting out there. He needs to bone up and get back to be that dominant possession type center. He’s got a huge contract [among others] and needs to start playing like it. Elite centers make their linemates better. Has anyones game benefited from playing on a line with Anze? Don’t get me wrong…I love me some AK in a big way. I just think he’s sulking a bit and has done so since DS arrived. “It is what it is” is not the quote I want to hear from my No. 1 center when asked about the firing of his head coach. With regards to Mr. Quick. Looks like he’s starting to over play the puck a bit. Not just last night but in recent games. Two pad slides and poke checks are not the mark of a confident goal tender. These Kings must be Italian…F-R-A-G-I-L-E…!

I’m a Kings fan and will always be one. I had very high hopes for this year but it looks like another medicore year in Kings history. Most of the boys have under performed except Quick. DL built this team, it’s failing and he has failed. It’s time for DL to go. This is the same old DL that was in SJ. AEG is putting out the money, and in turn passing the cost along to us (higher prices for tickets, see the LA Times). My feeling is that if the guys don’t want to work to get better then call up some kids that do. Nolan and King sure look like they want to be here. How many times do we have to see bonehead penalties, and players (who making a lot of money) out of position that cost goals.

I’ve started feeling really bitter about the team lately…why does a team which skates 2500 miles away from me control my emotions? Why do i constantly mess up all my social plans so i can watch them play? I mean obviously i’m a fan, but during a slump why don’t i alter my life a little bit? I re-googled to verify the sad fact that they haven’t won a playoff series in 10 years. I woke up yesterday not super stoked about having a game at night for the first time in a while…and by the time gametime came around, sure enough, i had it on and was watching… only to have hope and happiness crushed again. i went to bed just being ticked off. work is whatevers right now, the personal life is whatevers right now, and the Kings were starting to feel that way. and i just started becoming mildly depressed… there was just nothing exciting to think about anywhere i looked.
and i say all that, but sure enough i’m sitting here weirdly looking forward to the Avs game tonight not because i hope we win, or i think we really need to win, but rather because i feel like for the first time in a long time i know we’re going to win tonight
also call me crazy, i think yesterday’s game, while a downer that we couldn’t pick up an extra point, was actually really healthy for Quick to go through. he basically hasn’t had a so-so game all year, and the one or two he’s had, were outright blowouts (i.e. the offense never scored). i think it was healthy for him to be in a game where he may not have been fully top form (he had some great saves though), and still had to battle personally to try and win the game since the team had a chance. in the end the PK’s ended us yesterday, but i’d rather have Quick work out those types of outtings now (and have him think about how he responds mid-game, making changes to adapt in the game, etc) versus in the first round of the playoffs.
shoot me now.
forever optimistic since 1988/89

If you are serious about “shoot me now,” have Mitchell take the shot. If you are not serious about it, have Stoll take the shot since it will be wide right.

@Shakes,
I can relate Shakes.
It seems like it’s always been painful to be a Kings fan but for some disturbing reason this year is far more painful than others. This year for some reason despite what I see and what I know to be true as an objective hockey fan of many years, I am able to suspend reality and doubt the day after each loss and feel like the next game is going to be the one where we turn the corner. Next game, more pain. Last night was surreal in that when we went up 3-0, I was out of my chair fist pumping and yelling and by the time I sat back down it hit me that we were going to find a way to lose the game. And we did. I quit watching at 4-3 and I knew what I would find when I checked the scores this morning. And to add insult to injury, there are all the same quotes from Brown, Doughty, and Sutter that we’ve read so many times this year.
And I’m already looking forward to tonight! Back on the roller coaster of pain.

It’s weird to think about things in retrospect that basically we became fans at the best possible performance time of the team and since then we’re just trying to find a team that captures that magic. ah childhood…and i’m only 34. ha!

@Shakes, We are in this together(+30). I had a good friend who was already a Kings fan have me watch a game on TV in 1969 against the california Golden Seals. I was hooked and went to many games at the Forum until 1972 when my wife and I bought season seats in section 9 row L. My love for the Crown was born and we never missed one game until 1979 when Jerry Buss changed our seats to senate seats and we dropped them. The Great One brought in so many new fans and the Kingdom has a great core of devoted fans from different generations. I still feel we will get this done before I have to sit in the Ultimate Nose Bleed seats. I want a window seat on the Insiders bus going down Figueroa St yelling to all-GO KINGS GO!!!
So… Kopitar in the dog house? Called out for not scoring. Called out for blowing his defensive read.
