Wednesday practice update

The Kings went through another hour-long practice today, with no lineup changes.

Before practice, Simon Gagne skated again for about a half-hour. After practice, I talked to Gagne and he discussed his progress, saying that he is still working toward getting in shape, a natural given that he was off the ice for six weeks. Much more from him, and other notes and quotes, to come…

does that mean that “getting in shape” is the only setback right now??

@Jgomez, Especially in the future when our offense gets that spark AND luck back. Has to happen can’t get any worse.

Then we probably don’t need Nash!!!

    Canadian King Reply:

@rogiesbackup, Hahaha we will always need Nash, Gagne didn’t light it up before he was injured why would he after.

    Jgomez Reply:

@rogiesbackup, He didn’t light it up but he was at about .5 points per game which isn’t bad. Plus, he wasn’t the only struggling as all of our players have gone through nasty droughts

…also on a non-important but slightly interseting sidenote, Thursday’s game is the last scheduled one to use our current 3rd jerseys (purple and black)…is it the last time we’ll see those worn? will they be back next year? only time will tell…

@Shakes, I don’t think they set a time limit on keeping the third jerseys around. However, it looked to me that they kept them just because they have so much gear for sale, and for internal use with just that crown on them. If they got rid of the third jersey that crown would have been left floating in no man’s land.

it doesn’t matter since we don’t seem to have more than two forwards in the offenseive zone at once very much anyways…

Jokey jokey aside, was I delirious, or has DS started using 4 forward + 1 dman on powerplays (I believe he had Richards on the point last game for a PP)

Richards did play the point on the PP when with the Flyers.

    petemagoop Reply:

@Shakes, Richards was on the point steady in Philly

    jp Reply:

@Belexes, I don’t like playing into hypotheticals too much, but it’d probably be Williams-Kopi-Nash and Gagne-Richards-Brown, with Williams switching sides. Alternative would be Williams playing natural position with Richards and Brown switching to left wing, which we know he’s done well at in the past. That would probably end up being the largest top line in the NHL.

    @jp,

    that’s how i had it slated too…

assuming it would take penner, stoll, hunter, bernier, and a pick to get him (as has been rumored in LA), i still like the way things would look…

    nash – kopitar – williams
king (gagne if/when he comes back) – richards – brown
    clifford – loktionov – nolan
lewis – fraser – richardson (westgarth when we need someone beat up)

    doughty – scuderi
    johnson – mitchell
    martinez/voynov – greene

    @Belexes,

    http://www.fiveminutesforfighting.com/2012/02/pointcounterpoint-trading-farm-for-nash.html

Here is a ‘teaser’ from the article: Counterpoint: Nash turns 28 this summer and has yet to have a really big season. He has only once surpassed 70 points in nine seasons.”

Another one: He has only placed in the top-5 in hits for the Blue Jackets once.

Another one: Point: Since Nash broke into the league in 2002-03 only seven players have scored more than his 277 goals. Those players are Patrick Marleau, Vincent Lecavalier, Marian Hossa, Dany Heatley, Alex Ovechkin, Jarome Iginla, and Ilya Kovalchuk. Not too shabby.

Counterpoint: Over that same period of time 24 players have tallied more points than Nash’s 527. Those include Ray Whitney, Alex Tanguay, Milan Hejduk, and Shane Doan. Not exactly elite company.

The Kings are nuts to trade away the farm to get Nash. Vancouver wants him, NYR want him. That Does make sense as they are in a position to win the Cup. The Kings aren’t in a position to win the cup so the only reason for DL to pull off such a deal is to secure his job.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@number 6, wait, so you think it’s a valid counterpoint to say tht only, ONLY, 24 players have talled more pts than him in that span??? 24 out of how many HUNDREDS of players??? All players? Not even just forwards??? If that’s a counter, it’s a real weak one, IMO… I’ll read the article.

    Stuart Reply:

@number 6, just to add, since I must be hazy on what “farm” means… what would be considered trading away the “farm?” is it the picks? Is it the back-up goalie? maybe the couple of prospects that DL’s been stock piling? Or is it JJ, or whatever other Dman off of our roster not named Mitchell? please help me understand, or is it just cliche to throw the term around?

    Stuart Reply:

@number 6, my apologies :) those things were lifted right out of the articel, so it wasn’t your notion that the farm would be trading… interesting:
“Scott Howson isn’t the league’s best GM, but he isn’t going to get Darryl Sutter’d over this one.” OUCH
“Nash is paid like an elite player, but the truth is he isn’t.” Really? he’s called a superstar, but not elite? fine line there…

Point – I hope DL tries to save his job by landing Nash…

    Canadian King Reply:

@Belexes, I would like to see Nash with Richards, they already played together on a line at the 2010 Olympics with Toews and were Canadas best line. So you know they already have the chemistry. PLus Kopi, Williams and Brown already have chemistry and are our best line to date. Then when Gagne is healthy throw him with Nash and Richards or put him on the third line with Lokti and he can give him some guidance and veteran leadership.

    [Reply]

    King Alex Reply:

@Shakes, I hope they are back next year but I would not bet on it at this point. With the season ticket price increase already on the books another new revenue stream would be to bring in another new jersey to sell us fans. Hopefully some of this new revenue AEG is going to bring in will go to getting a top notch winger. If I am not mistaken, there have been some Nash rumors flying around. I think I’ve read about them somewhere…..

    [Reply]

    Jeff_R Reply:

@okufirst, The fact that he is skating and shooting the puck is a good sign and also the fact that he said he is working on getting back in shape. That is a good sign that he will be back either by the end of the regular season or playoffs. All I have to say with the price increase for next season, they better bring in someone big. Also with the extra revenue coming in from us ticket holders, if we renew, it can be used to bring in Nash AND Parise :) .

a few days ago i posted that i was taking my son (and family) to the ‘hawks game on the 25th and i wanted to do something special for him. my original idea was to get him either acknowledged at the Staples center or on t.v. with Bob and Jim. my problem was i didn’t know how to go about doing this and i asked for help/suggestion here on thus blog. I got a very nice, and varied, response from about 10 different folks. Bottom line, I was pointed to the website and to contact the team via Kings Royal Service. I emailed them yesterday and today at 1030 am I got a phone call from a very nice representative who had an offer that I snapped up right away. The entire family will view the warm ups for the game from the visiting team’s penalty box! Man I can’t wait and I’m sure it’s going to be a very memorable experience for my son. If Gagne could come back for the playoffs that would be a HUGE boost I dont care if he hasnt played in a while. He’s a proven producer and if you get him on that second line with Richards (remember they both set career highs in points playing together) thats natural chemistry already that will help him coming back from a long break. HOWEVER that being said I dont believe he should come if he doesnt feel ABSOLUTELY 100% because its stupid risking your long term health. And remember, it would be better if he coyld rest up and be ready to go for training camp next year.

Nash kind of reminds me of Joe Thornton actually, way over hyped and never comes thru for his team when needed. Whoever gets him, if anyone, will overpay for his services and regret doing it 3 years from now big time, dont expect Nash to lead, he is a follower, and doesnt even do that very well for the money he is being paid.
