After practice today, Darryl Sutter had a very Darryl Sutter answer when asked about his message to Dustin Penner, after Penner had been a healthy scratch from the last two games.
SUTTER: “Work your (butt) off. Then you get a chance to play again. If you don’t, you don’t.”
No changes based on practice today. Simon Gagne was able to get on the ice again today for some skating and shooting. Also, there will be a TV crew around for a few days, as Mike Richards is set to be featured as part of the “NHL 36″ series on the NHL Network. More notes and quotes to come…
out-friggen-standing… was that message clear enough? #25 is now available for any and all comers… (and I don’t mean Penner, I really mean the jersey number LOL)

@Stuart, I understand the frustration over #25, but what about the rest of the line up? Not a great sign when you have to look to 3 rookies just to win a game. Penner seems to fit right in with the rest of the non productive team we have.

@et219, I doubt Stoll would be in Penners shoes, Hes playing out of position and their line was being complemented for their defensive match ups before he got injured. Penner plays hard for a game or two and then takes one off. That’s what the message is about. Stoll is still playing his game and putting in the effort night after night while whole team is slumping on the scoreboard.

@et219, You’re right. I think Penner is taking the heat for a lot of players. He deserves it but Sutter and everyone else are making it sound like the rest of the team is performing well and working hard. Uh, okay. How about Kompon? Sutter has handled that loser with kid gloves since he arrived. Penner is definitely the pound of flesh everyone has been looking for, but many other things need to be fixed on this team before the playoffs. A lot of our players need to be taking a long look in the mirror.

Nash for JJ, Loktionov, 1st rounder and Hickey… Sounds good to me. For thos worried about salary we get 13.8M of the books this year… Plus another 5M off the books with JJ trade. Therefore, we can easily take nash’s salary and give quick his worth and still be below the cap (could add a second/third line player for another 3m). Awesome move lombardi if you can do it. Cup contender for sure. Do it Dl you will be a King legend for this trade.

I don’t see how the Kings get this done without convincing Columbus to take one or two medium-to-large contracts in return. Perhaps they’d be willing to take Penner and Stoll, but they’d definitely want Bernier and probably at least a draft pick and/or a prospect, which is a lot to give up for one guy (maybe they throw in Mason as a backup).
Still, I think if the deal can be made, Nash isn’t a guy I’d pass on, and I’d go for him before Parise because he doesn’t have the injury problems Parise has had. He’s big, fast, skilled, and is used to creating offense on teams that don’t score a lot. Could there be a better fit?

Here is my devil’s advocate for Columbus and why they would do that trade.
In this off season, they will have a TON of cap room due to the removal of Nash, Penner and Hunter’s contracts. They will have a couple of 1st round picks (if LA gives up ours in this trade). And they will have their goalie of the future in Bernier.
So it is not entirely crazy if they think Bernier is the guy and if they think they can rebuild through next years free agents (Parise?) and through the draft (always failed them before)..

I know this came up on the previous posting, but IMHO, this is what we need to/should give up to get Nash:
Bernier: CBJ needs a goalie; yes I know we haven’t signed JQ, but we have him for another year and if we want to win, the time is NOW.
Loktionov: LA is set at center with Kopi and MR; Loktionov is not a third line C and needs to play where he can shine and CBJ desperately needs help down the middle
Martinez: You have to thrown in a defenseman (not JJ), and if I’m not mistaken AM went to school in the area and would fit right in.
A draft pick or a conditional draft pick: No deal ever seems to be complete without one.

@bmova, U might have to swap martinez for JJ or Voynov. I dnt mind swapping JJ bc we unload 5m of cap space. Martinez and Voynov have proved they can play and be stars at this level. If you are worried abt PP1 just put Richards at the other point (he played that position in the Flyers run).. Truly a great move if the Kings get Nash.. Its actually a situation where both teams win

@Jacky boy, I like JJ, don’t want to see him leave. We’re already giving up 3 roster players and a pick. If it’s salary you’re worried about, Penner’s inflated salary can easily be traded for a lifetime supply of pancakes and Stoll’s contract is up at the end of this year (and that can also be traded; Lewis and Fraser can easily handle C3 and C4).

@John, Not at 4 million and some change, or (IMO) even at a reduced rate. Even if he produced from here on out, the main question would be, why didn’t he earlier when it could of mattered?
I do think his problem is an extension of what is happening to all the players on the team, but much of it is his fault as well. He now lacks the vision, and puck support he had when he played with other teams. He might gain those things back, but not in the Kings system, and not consistantly enough to warrent an extension.

Under no conditions whatsoever. Maybe you need to read the blogs of the Edmonton fans who were pleased to be rid of him….. and then being a good math student, add that to what he’s done in one full year in LA. It doesn’t add up to enough to pay someone for a good month and a half.

It’s about time Sutter starts ripping some @ss! He needs to send the same message to all players. With this much talent, and an outstanding goaltender in Quick, this team should be fighting for the top position in the West instead of fighting just to get into the playoffs. It’s time for Sutter to show why he’s been brought here by getting these boys going before it’s too late, again. This is a very talented team, don’t waste it!!

@HockeyOnlyAwaitingModeration, You’re right! TM had no balls when it came to getting into the players faces. Sutter is known for doing just that either face to face with the players or in the media. That’s what this team needs right now. It’s a critical stretch in the season right now because the clock is ticking so it’s time Sutter starts to show what he has been brought here for. This team and the Kings fans are used to losing. Lombardi has done a great job of building this franchise into contenders for years to come but if the players don’t get the right message they will continue to be pretenders like always. Now’s the time to kick some ass or the talent on this team will be wasting away.

@Alex, Now I’m not saying this team shouldn’t be tweaked a bit to add more scoring but overall it’s a sound defensive team with a great young goaltender in Quick. Defense wins championships and I do believe this team can win a cup but it needs an attitude adjustment. The forwards need to be held more accountable for the lack of scoring. TM just stood behind the bench hoping the team could figure it out for themselves that doesn’t work and it hasn’t worked. Sutter now needs to rattle some cages to get the boys going. With any occupation, if you don’t produce you’re going to hear it from the boss. This is a talented team but the players need to take more ownership and get the job done. I have followed this franchise since 1967 I’ve seen it fail ever since then. Now it’s just time to put a boot in the players rear end like Sutter told Penner. Work hard or sit down. If you don’t win the very last game of the playoffs you have failed!
[Reply]
What I find peculiar (?) is that it’s a bit of an indictment of two people. Penner, being paid $4M per year can’t but out a consistent effort? Thats pretty …. much a bummer. But that he can’t put it out when A) he’s on 5 goals and B) on a contract year….. that’s absolutely incredible. Incredible.
The other person is the GM. I still see on different blogs, Edmonton fans saying thank you for taking him off of our hands. So, when DL traded for Smyth he said about Smyth that ‘he has no cheat in his game’. Clearly he knew a lot about Smyth. How then is it possible that he didn’t know enough about Penner to give up all that he did. A first round pick full stop should have been more than enough. If Edmonton fans are saying that, they clearly they see something that pre-scouting should also show.
Gives the idea that they scouted him for two games and he happened to have good games on those nights.
If the Kings want to move up the ranks – really you just can’t afford moves like that. That’s a huge mistake.
