Sutter postgame quotes (Feb. 12)

Darryl Sutter’s postgame thoughts…

(on the strong play of King and Nolan…)

SUTTER: “Pretty much right through (the lineup). We were finishing a long stretch of games, and you just have to really suck it up and find a way. They were fresh, those two.’’

(on not panicking after Dallas tied the game…)
SUTTER: “It’s not a big deal, really. That’s how you’ve got to play. It’s a tough league, a tough league to score in, a tough league to win in. The most important part of what you see is playing with a lead. Scoring the first goal is way more important than anything else, the way this league is now.’’

(on finishing the trip with a win…)
SUTTER: “We played really well. The only time I had any issue was the first game of the trip, the first period against St. Louis. Other than that, I thought we played really well. You’ve kind of always got to separate it. We’ve struggled to score. That’s not a secret now. It’s not about our work or compete, I know that. Our kids play hard.’’

    Our compete? Is compete a verb?

    [Reply]

    DesertKing Reply:

    @TRuskowski,

    Yes, it is since it is an “action” word. DS is using it as a noun, which is incorrect, as it should be used as an adjective (description word) in the phrase “comepete level.” But what the heck, DS is from the farm, and half the time I don’t understand what he is saying.

    OH NO!

    [Reply]

    McCheese Reply:

    @TRuskowski, kind of funny how when Terry used to use that one, everyone would jump all over him and have a laugh. Now we are winning a few more games and its an endearing term from the guy off the farm.

    [Reply]

    Christian T Reply:

    @TRuskowski, I’m pretty sure DS was excepted at an Ivy League school so the whole farm boy thing is probably just an act so that we don’t bother him all the time. The guy is pretty smart about how he handles the team. Even though they still can’t score the level of play is 100% better than it was under TM.

    Not sure if anyone said it, but we won with only 16 shots on goal, and faced 28. I find that a good stat in ONE (only one) way; the quality shots, vs just getting it there with nobody for the rebound. Now that we have had a good scoring game with some new blood on the ice, lets see if we can shake the tree and drop some more pucks into the net. With the success of Nolan and King so far, Penner might want to consider filling out an application while he’s there.”

    @puck73,

    It is for “certain,” the only unknown is when exactly “certain” will be. It would be great to get something for him, even a draft pick, rather than nothing when he walks at the end of the season. Either way, we get rid of a lodestone and clear his $4.25 million hit on our cap.

    Sorry Subby, but his lack of effort is what drives us crazy. Even those of us who are not true athletes can tell the difference between someone who is earning and someone who is just collecting a paycheck.

    [Reply]

    Subby Reply:

    @DesertKing, Oh no, I totally agree with his lack of effort on many nights and I do think he is on his way out and I understand that everyone hates him but the constant bashing is just like old. I don’t like bashing our own players. He is still a King and as long as he remains a King I am going to have hope for him.

    That goes for all our players. I rarely ever lose hope in a player. I always try to keep the gut feeling that something is good to come. That’s why it’s hard for me to bench a Kings player on my fantasy roster. Because I always try to believe in them. Not to get all sappy and lame but I just idk.

    I think its funny to joke and call players funny nicknames, I love it. I used to call Smyth Grampa lol but it just always seems no matter what someone has something bad to say about anything about the Kings and I just really wish we could all be a little more supportive and look at things in a different way but hey I could be the wrong one. Maybe we should get on Penner and bash.

    This is something I think about all the time and I am still not certain on whats right or wrong.

    hockeynerd Reply:

    @Subby, When it comes to Penner lack of production is a secondary concern at this point in the season.
    it is his lack of energy/effort he DOESN’T bring. It is not ALL about points, last nights game against Florida King and Nolan were 2 of the best players on the ice .. they went pointless, heck they went shotless. Penner for whatever reason is not fitting with in so its best for all parties to part ways. This is a player that if he goes off and becomes successful, which is highly possible .. finds his game again on another team, Ill be happy for, BUT i still wont wish we kept him around, someones garbage is someone else treasure.

    Subby Reply:

    @hockeynerd, well put.

    [Reply]

    vicarious Reply:

    @hockeynerd, I think Penner has put in the effort but it hasn’t worked for him here. IMO, Penner is slow and not overly physical. He plays a cerebral game. Penner’s rarely if ever going to be a favorite of the fight’em crowd, the hit em crowd, or the try harder crowd (who like to see people running around). Penner wqas a proven NHL scorer for other teams, though. Maybe he was hurt, maybe his game doesn’t fit, maybe he didn’t want to be traded, maybe last year he was not in shape (but I wonder how he managed in Edmonton if that was his problem). Seems to me Penner’s a good egg. Having said all that, seems to me the AHL rooks both outplayed Penner. Penner will probably sign somewhere else next year and revert to scoring 20-30 goals.

    Look on the bright side: the Kings don’t have Gomez, making 6-7 million and who went a year without scoring for Montreal.

    [Reply]

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

    @vicarious,
    Those are valid points and I think you nailed it. Penner’s game has not fit with our team since we acquired him but I still like the guy. I think the knock on his effort is BS too. He’s just a different style of player and other than scoring there’s just not a lot that he does very well so when he’s not scoring he looks awful. Lewis and Richardson can’t score either and contribute almost nothing except turnovers, but they expend a lot more energy than Penner doing it so they’re not called out by as many fans. Rest assured, this is Penner at rock bottom and we may never see him in a Kings sweater again but I don’t think his effort is the cause. He’s a square peg in LA and just won’t ever be the guy we all thought we were getting. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t care.

    Mars Reply:

    @Subby,

    Subby, I know I dont know you, but I know you will pick up your game, you sound like you have heart and desire, relax and it will come to you bro.

    Penner was a huge let down though, we have had a few, Moreau being another recently. But I am not going to write off a (or all) player(s)having a bad season, I still hope Stoll will come back healthy, strong and back to his true form, and as a center, I hate when the Kings try to convert centers to wingers. I am also looking forward to a healthy Gagne and Parse too.

As for penner and stoll, penner is a good player with alot of skills, he just. Never fit in here, I’ll bet he’s another player who really picks it up after he leaves the kings, stoll we need to resign, put him back at center where he belongs, and he’ll be a big asset again for us next year

    ddc Reply:

    @Kingsfan602,

    it won’t happen, richards and carter will not be reunited… they were looked at as the party boys in philly that couldn’t put their fun on the back burner long enough to win… from my sources (and yes, they are very inside), the main issue was carter, and richards got lumped in too (mainly because he did nothing to stop/change it… ie if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem)… and then to see the way carter has spent his limited time in columbus complaining about not wanting to be there, we don’t need that.

    @11 or 3, According to DL El Cid Lounge men’s softball league already owns his rights.

    “Dustin is at the crossroads of his career,” Lombardi wrote in an email to Sporting News. “He can choose to use his athletic ability to either become a dominant power forward in the National Hockey League or be a dominant number four hitter for the El Cid Lounge in a men’s softball league — the choice is his.”

    @Shuchuck, I had high hopes for Penner when we got him and he started out well but got KO’d by Willie and Kopi getting injured. Then the fact that he worked real hard in the off season, I really thought he was going to have a monster year and gain a new contract, whether it was with us or not. While I am disappointed that it didn’t work out, I am however upset as Penner didn’t really even try to make it work. Why go through all that work in the off season only to not work during the season. With Stoll at least you know he is a team player and he will work his butt off and play with heart. Unfortunately all that didn’t help him offensively, but at least you know he tried his best to make it work and kept working hard, even though he wasn’t scoring. The other facets of his game were there, even when the scoring wasn’t. He also didn’t say a word even when asked to play out of position, something he has never done before. he could of easily have come out and said something, knowing that he is in a contract year but he didn’t. I am a Stoll fan and I feel sorry for him that this year didn’t go the way he’d like. I wish Stoll luck wherever he lands but Penner I will hate to see if go to another team and then score 25-30 goals. I know there will be a lot of people here that says the Kings system, coaches, etc kept him down and blame Dl for that, when it should stand squarely on Penner’s shoulders.

    11 or 3 Reply:

    @KC23, that is good news! he won’t have to worry about everyone pestering him about trying harder. the el cid guys are much more understanding than those nhl people.

    Adios Pennercakes, thanks for the laughs. I say keep Stoll around as a face off guy for the playoffs unless he’s part of a package to bring someone good back (he’s off the books next year anyway, right?).. as for Penner freakin salary dump city… bag of pucks? Whatever, just do it.

    Nobody mentioned that Loktionov finally found a way to score, getting his stick on shots yesterday and today that were going into the net anyway. He deflected them about one-eighth of an inch. If he keeps it up, he’ll have his own personal stat for goals scored by yourself and goals stolen from other players. He still hasn’t shot one in himself this year. Too bad, because he has some skill.

    @johnjuan, As Unlucky as the Kings have been most of the season, it is nice that they finally had goals go in unconventionally. At the end of the day it stands as 2 goals and nobody is going to remember or care how they went in, cept maybe Lokti himself.

    2nd > 1st > 4th > 3rd. Surprisingly, 2nd line was the line having the least problem leaving their own zone. The 3rd line created lots of trouble in that zone. I know this is something to do with the line match up DS made, still 3rd line did the worst job.

    [Reply]

    Harty Reply:

    @goldielocks, if your talking about our zone that’s because the center has to come low to support and Lotkionov is not strong enough, watch this line, Lewis comes low more often the Lotkionov as he is not strong enough to fish pucks from the D guys and work them out to the wing……..

    goldielocks Reply:

    @Harty,

    That’s very interesting. Never thought of that. I thought it was Lewis who often blows the coverage beause of the lack of awareness or over doing the forechecking (see how he and Richardson blew it for the Dallas’s 2nd goal). But come to think of it, Lokti is showing very good back checking lately. That might be because he loses the puck as much. I’ll keep an eye on it.

    Congrats to the kids. They sure are making an impact in the lineup. It’s like a breath of fresh air. They hustle every shift. King is always the first one in on the forecheck and winning those 50/50 battles that guys like Penner lose consistently.
    The difference is so noticeable between them and Wally Pip (Penner).
    If the kids continue to play this way, I don’t think we’ll be seeing too much more of Penner and that’s a good thing. He has nobody to blame but himself. Lack of hustle and lack of heart are things you can control.
    I guess we know why he signed up to do that early morning breakfast thing today. He can’t be too tired.

    This was a big win for the Kings. Looking at the numbers it wasn’t as successful a trip as we wanted, but winning in regulation on the back end of a road back to back against a rested team chasing us, is huge in my book.

    Another big one coming up Thursday agaisnt the Yotes. The boys will be rested and ready to go. Another 2 points on Thursday and away we go!.

    Go Kings!

    In addition to his 2 goals in 2 games, Lokti has also been doing a lot better on faceoffs – 4/7 (57%) against the Islanders and 5/5 yesterday against the Stars (3/3 against Ribiero – Kopi was 0/2, Richards 2/4). In fact, seems like it wasn’t long ago that Lewis and Richardson were taking most of the faceoffs when that line was out. Still weak on the boards but, IMO, he’s doing better there and is almost always good for a steal or two a game. Don’t know what DS is going to do, but for now I wouldn’t put Stoll centering the third line unless Lotki really stumbles and takes a step backward . . .

    @KDinUT,
    Good point about Lotki.
    He seems like a different player over the past week or so. He’s had the puck on his stick a lot more and is making plays in the offensive zone.
    He’s still young and makes mistakes, but you can definitely see the talent.

    I like the new dudes. What makes me sick is DL’s
    Trading of Simmonds and Schenn. Didn’t ever like that trade. Knew Schenn was gifted. Couldn’t be “Grinder” so Kings keep Clifford with big club. Clifford or Schenn? Lokti or Sturm a year ago? Young gifted Offensive Players are shipped elsewhere. Trading Bernier would be the worst move of all. Mark my words. These moves are Biting DL in the “derriere” as Kings struggle to make playoffs.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Poorman,
    Are you serious?
    You might have been the only person in the world who thought getting Richards was a bad move. Even in hindsight that still was a trade that DL had to make.
    The hope was that Schenn would one day become like Mike Richards. Her’s not there yet..not by a long shot. He has talent, but you’re not getting Richards without giving up something of value.
    I love Simmer and wish we still had him, but again you have to give up something to get something.
    You are still the only person who thinks keeping JQ over Bernier would be a mistake. Maybe you’re right, but there’s no way in hell anyone would consider Bernier the better goaltender at this point.

    @nykingfan, lol. No matter what anyone on this site says. Even if Quick posted another 3 shutouts in a row. As soon as Quick gave up one goal and the kings lost, he (@poorman) would be right back on here saying that Quick blew it, is fading down the stretch, and that Quick couldnt carry Bernier’s jock ! lol lol

    [Reply]

    Poorman Reply:

    @puck73, I’m not comparing who’s better boys. I’m just saying don’t trade Bernier. I never liked the Richards trade, and Schenn wasn’t ever given a chance like so many young offensive Kings players. Schenn is gifted. We all knew that. Is Richards better? If you don’t give someone a chance. Sure. Is Quick better than Bernier? Sure, if he only gets into 10 games. In the long run, who’s better with both these comparisons? DL’s answer: Trade. Don’t give new players a chance. Result to this point (6 year plan): No playoff series wins. Struggling in year 6 just to make the playoffs.

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Poorman,
    If you’re talking about trading Bernier during this season I agree 100%.
    But if you sign JQ to a long term contract over the summer, I don’t see how you can not trade Bernier. He becomes a valuable asset that will have a hard time wrstling the #1 spot from JQ unless of an injury. I think JQ is proving so far that he’s only getting better. I don’t expect a drop in his play. He’s maturing as a goaltender.

    The thing about Schenn and Bernier is they both have potential. In DL’s mind, he felt that securing that #2 center with a guy like Richards was going to help win this year for the Kings and due to his young age, help us win in the long term future as well.
    Schenn was a top prospect and trading him away for a deadline filler would have made no sense. He didn’t do that.
    If you’re going into the playoffs right now, I think we can all agree that richards will probably give us more. Playoff experience does count adn he has plenty of it. Schenn’s still a baby. that’s not to say he won’t be as good or better than Richards, but right nhow, you have to take the experience that Richards brings us.

    @Poorman, I think Mike Richards was worth it. I think if he was on the Flyers team right now he would have the amount of goals combined that those two have.

    It does bite seeing those two playing so good. You have to give great to get great.

    KC23 Reply:

    @Poorman, I also don’t want to see Bernier traded right now, but I’ll take Mike Richards over Schenn and Simmonds any day. Now that Richards actually have some talent and size on his wings it’ll be interesting to see what developes.

    My son played goalie for 10 years, the last 2 with a real athletic kid who made spectacular, crowd pleasing saves. My son just made positional saves that looked routine because he read the play well and was seldom out of position…this is how Bernier plays. Quick, while great, does have a tendency to over react and slide out of position at times…in effect, trying to do too much because he knows he can’t give up ANY goals and expect a win. This is something he can correct, but I see it more this year, especially lately. The teams the Kings will play in the playoffs will exploit this flaw in Quicks game…Wings,Hawks,Casucks,Blues,Sharts, etc. because they all have multiple lines that can score. I agree with Poorman, Bernier is tthe better long term player. By the way, my kid had better numbers and more wins than the other kid, bujt the other was the crowd fave. Just sayin…

    Bernier’s a better technical goalie..JQ’s the more athletic goalie.
    Which one is better? Let’s talk again in 10 years and see what happens.
    You can’t say one way is better than the other.
    JQ’s way of playing has made him an all star and the best player on the Kings right now. Without him, where would we be?
    That’s not to say Bernier couldn’t be doing the same, but if one guy’s already doing it, that’s the guy I want in net for me.
    Just an opinion.

    It was no surprise to me to see Richards lift his game up with King and Nolan, he needed a pair of teammates that were fearless and that could stay on the fore-check, and get to the front of the net and stay there. Stoll will be needed for his faceoff prowess, but Penner could (and should) be checking the listings for a new apartment in another city.
