Brown postgame quotes (Feb. 11)

Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts…

(on having chances, but not finishing…)
BROWN: “I thought we played a good game. We’ve just got to find a way to score goals. I thought (Mike Richards’) line, with Kinger and Nolly, had some great chances. It was sitting there on the goal line, sitting back door. It’s the same story for us. I thought we played a really good game and couldn’t find a way to score goals. That’s it, really. We’ve got to score goals.’’

(on having to play tight, low-scoring games every game…)
BROWN: “We’re well-versed with it, in the last few years, with the same exact story. Maybe not to the same extent as this year. The longer this race goes, the more games you’re going to see that are going to be that grind, 1-1, 2-1. We’ve got to find ways to score. Our goalies have been good all year. We’ve got to find ways to score two goals. If we score two goals, we win the game. We had more chances, more opportunities than them. It was one pretty good individual effort on the overtime goal, and that’s it.’’

(on needing more offense…)
BROWN: “Nolly played his first NHL game tonight, and he probably had three or four good chances. Nabokov made some big saves for them. There was one in the third where he made a really good save. If one of those goals in, we hold onto the lead. If you look at our record with a lead in the third, I think we’ve lost three games in four years or something like that. We’ve got to find a way to score goals.’’

    I think it’s about time we start thinking of trading DD. I want people to get behind this because I would much rather keep Quick for 7 mil. You don’t trade Kopi, you give him a solid left winger. Also, I didn’t even notice that Penner was benched today..

    @alex101, Sorry not behind it. 7mil will be a bargain for a DD type defenseman. Move Martinez picks and a prospect for the forward we need DD and defense is not the problem but it will be if we start trading them. Let Sutter teach DD and JJ how to play.

    @alex101,

    All this talk of trading DD. Really? I am sure that there are 29 other teams that would to have him. We need the forwards to score, that’s the bottom line. I agree with Christian, defense is not the problem.
    For the record the only DD to trade in my opinion is Davis Drewiske.

    Ten For Instigating Reply:

    @alex101, so many things wrong with this statement. First why would you think quick will ask for at get anywhere near 7m. You do not pay based on who should make the most on your team. You pay market value for the position. Unfortunately for goalies, the market is not $7m. Goalies fall off the cliff way to fast for that sort of cash.

    Second, 29 other GM’s would make the same deal. DD got what the market dictated. He is the kings #1 defenseman. He is not making $7m this year. Don’t know why people are so fascinated with his contract. How about just enjoy the fact DD may become one of the best defenseman in the league. This includes not only offensive numbers but actually playing defense too.

    Damn it, why do I keep reading comments?

    @lakingbob(chi),

    The answer is still going to be the same old stuff: “We need to get more pucks to the net and get more bodies to the front”

    This team has the absolute worst Shots/Goals ratio. If it takes around 30 shots to equal 1 lak goal, the boys need to be trying for 90+ shots per game. Do it!

    You ever see the movie Fever Pitch? There is a scene where the Red Sox fans are sitting in a restaurant after yet another loss. They sound like us; stewing over another loss. Screaming about their situation and asking why management this and that.

    Then they see two star players for the Sox (Damon and someone I can’t remember) laughing, drinking and enjoying a steak.

    The fan asks, “How can they sit there and laugh after losing again? How can they drink and act like nothing is wrong?”

    I hear all the time that the fans aren’t the “team” and we’re not on the ice. Well, we’re not getting paid to do what we do and we live and die with this damn team. We agonize over it, debate it…. it alters our days.

    For not being part of the team, we are pretty invested.

    I love Dustin Brown as much as you can love watching an athlete play. He’s been a favorite of mine from jump street. But this “we played a good game” aw shucks crap makes me want to watch golf.

    It wasn’t a good game. There were at least five key turn overs. Star players were out played by a guy in his first game. And if it wasn’t for Quick saving their tails, it would have been embarrassing.

    I’m finishing this beer (metaphorically speaking), paying my tab and getting the hell out of here. Brown can enjoy his steak dinner and his million dollar paycheck.

    We should organize a sit-out at the next home stand. Shouldn’t be too hard to spread the word on Twitter, Facebook and here and God knows the fans should be at a point where they would take action.

Not much can be done besides the players playing as hard as possible. Sutter is the man for that job. Nobody can turn Brown into Crosbie or something like that. Nobody will assign value to our extra players making them willing to trade us anything worth a damn. We’re stuck.

    linny Reply:

    @Bama Kings, the answer is CHANGE from the top down. If AEG wont sell (and they won’t ) then they need to get somebody who loves and knows hockey to run this team. That means replacing Lieweke and DL with someone who knows what they’re doing. Then comes a coaching change and rebuild…again. unfortunately DL destroyed this team and nothing can fix it.

    I’ve not said a lot about Brown. But that changes today.

    Watch his last couple of shifts and OT again. Brown tried to do it all himself, not even looking for help from a teammate. I’ll give a little to the “I’ll lead by example” approach, but Dustin, you brought it on yourself today.

    Man up and say that. “Obviously”, on one wants to hear you say, “We’ve just got to find a way to score more goals.”

    Here’s one way. Try approaching offense as a 5 man unit (OK, 4 in OT).

    There. There’s one way for you, Dusty.
    I’ll bet there are others.

  17. Scot says:

    What a wonderful captain we have.

    And what wonderful leadership we have to not recognize what a “wonderful” captain we have, and CHANGE it.

    Hard for a team to believe in themselves when their own captain doesn’t believe in them, or himself.

    When you say “We’ve just got to find a way to score goals.” It’s a statement of feeling defeated. He doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t know what to say. He doesn’t know how this team is going to score goals. He’s just hoping for better luck. That’s not good, folks.

    What does management see in Dustin Brown that I don’t?

    Yes, he skates hard. He throws his body around (sometimes), but sometimes he does it at the expense of picking up the puck or helping his team defensively.

    -He can’t stick-handle
    -His passes are often TOO hard, or in the feet
    -He dives
    -He plays with his head down
    -He runs around with the puck recklessly, and without patience.

    To name a few.

    He is a grinder. He is a grinder, with some offensive upside, kind of like Chris Neil. If you had put Chris Neil on Spezza and Alfredsson’s line for an entire season, he could have scored 30 goals too, like Brown has. But Brown is being used improperly, and it’s just one of the things killing this team. He may have scored 30 before, but how many offensive chances are squandered because of Brown? Way more than 30. You want a player like him on your 3rd line, if you want to be a good hockey team. And you wouldn’t pick him as your captain. (He was chosen by default)

    [Reply]

    NB22 Reply:

    @Scot,

    Agree completely. He isn’t passing, just shooting. Just watch todays game. He is driving the net hard, and I give him credit for that, but when you have more talent besides in Kopi/Willy => PASS THE PUCK. And ofc he loses the puck more often then anybody.

    [Reply]

    kingfan91 Reply:

    @Scot, Been saying the same thing. Teams typically take on the identity of their captain. Brown, as you said, really nice player to have on your team as he grinds hard throws great hits but hands of steel and virtually no playmaking ability. Definitely not a finisher. Definitely not a clutch forward. Definitely not an exciting player. The Kings = Brown. Please make a change management.

Our goalies have played well for us all season. We have to find a way to snore… I mean, score.”
