Tuesday skate update

Jonathan Quick was the first goalie off the ice after the Kings’ morning skate, so he is tonight’s likely goalie. It seems that no lineup changes will be in store tonight, as Davis Drewiske, Slava Voynov and Kevin Westgarth are the extra skaters. More notes and quotes to come…

    That’s too bad if Westy sits. I hate to see them waste the chemistry that the fourth line was developing. Oh well. We’ll see.

    @40YearKingsFan,

    Yeah, it’s very Terry Murray-like, wouldn’t you say? That line (Clifford-Fraser-Westy) were very effective and they actually won two in a row. Then, Sutter, for whatever reason, decides to change up the fourth line, who was arguably the most effective line? Doesn’t make sense…

    @eric, It’s reaqlly the first time I’ve almost second-guessed Sutter. It started with the Lokti benching and then turned into a mini realignment that I really didn’t care for and didn’t pan out.

    Cliffie, Fraser, Westy was very good together and made life very difficult for the opposition. Oh well, I’m sure Sutter knows a hell of a lot more than I do.

    Certainly change nothing… I believe that is the best way to quickly turn things around. Gotta get Westy in on his BDay, he is on pace to score more than Penner, Hunter, and a number of other guys in far far fewer minutes.

    Looks like Sutter is happy with Martinez. As for Voynov, good luck kid, fight the good fight !

    VanKingsFan Reply:

    @puck73, Any chance he is holding Voynov out so he can be traded? Or is he showcasing Marty for a trade?

    I could see us trading one or both of them for scoring help, and then picking up Spacek, or Sutton or something similar to fill the whole.

    BKR Reply:

    @VanKingsFan,

    It better be that he’s trying to showcase A-Mart leading up to the deadline. Still, makes no sense from a playoff-push perspective. Slava’s been playing FAR better than Doughty/Johnson. But hey, Deano hitched his wagon to Doughty’s $7+mil so he essentially HAS to play him now that he’s overpaid him…

    VanKingsFan Reply:

    @BKR, Better than Doughty and Johnson… sounds like a comment made purely by looking at a statsheet and not watching any games…

    TeamJMFJ Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, seriously…they must not be watching games

    KC23 Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, Doubt it. LA Times saying a deal is not likely and DL has been giving Helen some inside info for a while now so I believe it. I think they want to see if Martinez can at least do as well as Voynov so they can send Voynov back to Manchester and allow us to take a look at some different forwards. Then again, why don’t they just send Loktionov back? Who knows. We’ll see how it goes.

    I kinda think the same way, both Tampa & Florida we play next are hurting for D men. I would not be surprised if Alec stays in the state when they fly off to Dallas.

    Travel to NYI before Dallas. Brutal stretch.

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

    @JWR, NYI should be sellers also. Maybe we take a look at Moulson?

    deadcatbounce Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, Do you honestly think that the Kings would put a player in the lineup just in hopes of getting rid of him if there’s a better option available? They’re in a playoff race and I hope they’d put their best available team on the ice every night, not showcasing someone they want to get rid of just so they can get a third-line player in return because at this point that’s probably all you’re going to get for Martinez.

    P.S.: Any team who would trade for Andy Sutton is only asking for trouble.

  8. puck73 says:

    Well. Dean Lombardi has really painted himself in a corner. Everyone around the league knows they need a scorer or two and if they want one then the Kings will have to give up someone they dont want to.
    This is what happens when you chase away top 6 talent like Moulson, Purcell, Holloway, and Moller and tell them to be stronger on their sticks! Yes, both Lombardi and Murray are responsible for the offense being in the bottom 7 of the league the last 3 seasons. Nicholls and Sutter are doing the best they can with what they have. Now Lombardi is going to have to make some radical changes or he maybe out of a job if the Kings dont make the playoffs.

    radical changes? No. Moller was ineffective and was about as strong as lokti. Again in my opinion, he DID need to be stronger. Can’t argue with Moulson/Purcell comments.

    [Reply]

    VanKingsFan Reply:

    @puck73, I dont see how we “chased” them away.

    Moulson stings… but he did have his chance with us. At the time I was ready to give up on him too. I think we learned our lesson and this is why we kept Parse for one more season (obviously didn’t work out…)

    Purcell still isn’t anything spectacular. He puts up okay point totals playing with some very offensive players. I am not too upset about losing him.

    Moller was given 3 or 4 big chances and he could never get it going. I still have faith that he will be a good player, and I think it will be interesting what will happen with him next season.

    Holloway … well… to me he never showed enough to be given much of a chance. I would have liked to see him get 7 games instead of King last year … but again I don’t think you can confidently say Bud would have solved any of our offensive problems.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, You know what the problem with some of the people on this site is? They think, like Murray and Lombardi, that you can turn any forward into Guy Carbonneau. Guess what? doesnt work that way! Most forwards cant play a dominant 2 way game like Kopitar and Datsyuk. I wish it was that easy, but its not.
    When you are building a team, you have to have a little bit of everything, and Lombardi and Murray neglected top 6 wingers and told them, ” be strong on your stick or you are outta here!
    Well guess what? Those weaklings are doing just fine on other teams without the genius of Lombardi and Murray.

    @puck73,

    DL doesnt want to let go any good prospects to get something good in return…but if the “time is now”…then he needs to stop worrying about the road 2, 3, 4 years from now and go all out.

    Time to make a splash Dean!…or else you’re going to have an unhappy owner when the Kings exit 1st round AGAIN this year…that is…if they even make the playoffs.

    [Reply]

    yetiman_oc Reply:

    @Cruiznblue, do you think there will be unhappy owners? I don’t. Kings have sold out most of their games this year, Lakers and Clippers are drawing well and the Grammy’s are there this weekend. Doesn’t sound too troulIng to me. Would love to hear someone from AEG about this disappointing team.

    I agree from both a hockey and a geographical perspective.
    We’d be better off w/o him and Tampa is a long ways away.

    puck73 Reply:

    @BKR, Yet another Lombardi puzzler. Why would you fire TM because the offense cant score but let the guy that adhere’s to the same philosophy stick around?
    I am starting to get impatient and annoyed as a Kings fan. Probably because of the high expectations and then watching the offense suck yet again.

    [Reply]

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

    @puck73,
    Given the expectations and the way they sold this team, I don’t think, with an offense performing at or near an NHL record worst, that it’s unreasonable to expect some sort of recognizable attempt to improve it. Anything.
    I agree and the impatience comes when it seems they’re happy with the status quo.

    And Schenn has 5 goals (given he has only played half the season so far)…if you want to compare overall output in the big trade during the offseason…Philly seems to have the better deal. They also have an extra draft pick.

    Davbot44 Reply:

    @KidKury, Flyers don’t play D, easier to score when you aren’t being responsible defensively. If Simmonds was King he wouldn’t have 17 goals.

    KidKury Reply:

    @Davbot44, The system crippled the offense the last couple of years in a trade for great defence. That was needed when there was marginal tallent on the team. Now the system is more open and they are playing excellent hockey for the most part, but just cant finish. A trade may help shake things up, but it is a team mental/psychological issue at this point. If you look at the stats of players who have come and gone, one glaring issue you can’t deny is offensive production dissapears when they play in LA. How would everyone feel watching Rick Nash put in 15-20 goals a year for $7.8M? Not sure what Dean needs to do, but not sure changing the tires will make this car go any faster.
