Sutter postgame quotes (Jan. 15)

Darryl Sutter’s postgame thoughts…

(on the reason for the slow start…)
SUTTER: “We just finished playing. We had a tough schedule. We played at 8 (p.m.) last night and we played at 6 today. I think that’s a good explanation.’’

(on getting one out of a possible two points…)
SUTTER: “We got three out of four points. We didn’t lose. We got three out of four. That’s for you guys [reporters] to be negative about, not me.’’

(on the game…)
SUTTER: “We had opportunities. I didn’t see the last time (the Kings) played Edmonton, but our team has had trouble scoring against Edmonton. … I didn’t have tickets for that (last) game. Didn’t see it.’’

(on why he started Quick…)
SUTTER: “Most No. 1 goalies play back-to-backs.’’

(on Quick being up to the task…)
SUTTER: “He wasn’t overworked last night. We got a point. We’ll take it. It’s a tough league.’’

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

@Duncanz, Huge chip. And I’m thinking the honeymoon with the press is just about over. He doesn’t like questions that imply any sort of second guessing. I think that for whatever his reasons may be, he doesn’t have a lot of need or respect for the hockey media in general. Sutter seems to be a one trick pony. He coaches his team and that’s it. He can’t pick out a fancy suit or dance his way through an interview, or even mask his disdain for those interviewing him. He just coaches and to everyone not on his roster he’s an enigma. And so far, that’s fine with me.

@CB14, Seems with the Kings it shows up in the first period, like it’s hard to get their legs going…maybe a young team is different that way…might even be related to poor performances in afternoon games.

    Hackwoods Reply:

@California Royalty, It was a big mistake to not give Quick the night off. JB needs games and Quick needs rest. Quick was very good against the oil, but I am going to be ticked if we make the playoffs again and our goalie is wiped out from playing too much. I know we get more than a week off starting in about nine days with the All Star break but every game played adds up and takes a toll. JB has earned more playing time based on his last few starts. DS, please give Quick a little more time off. We will need him semi fresh down the stretch and hopefully in the playoffs.

@puck73, I don’t think so, because at the time the Kings weren’t going anywhere real soon and if you recall ( I still have nightmares about it) he was very prone to coughing the puck up at the wrong time or up the slot etc.,etc. Skate?? You bet, good shot?? Yup, Prone to turnovers in his own end??? Completely, it wasn’t until he got away from the Kings and evidently someone worked with him, he finally became a great defenseman. You’re right though Doughty could become a great defenseman also, but I don’t think he would come back and haunt the Kings. Did Murphy? Did Bourque?? They were just parts of their team and granted they’re both HOFers. But the Kings have a pretty good lot of Dmen but not really good fast snipers. They still need the guy that can ruin the other teams night with one shot, or 50 for the season.

No need to trade anyone right now. This team has scored 14 goals in the last 4 games. If they can keep up near that pace we are going to be fine.

    [Reply]

    Mars Reply:

@AZ King, Unfortunately, I dont see any trades til we lock Quick, unless we are dumping cap space.

    California Royalty Reply:

@andy, If Doughty was drafted by another team and even had the exact same summer as he did this year, you and most of the people on here would be saying “we need a big name like Doughty to turn this thing around”.
Doughty had a bad game last night, but he isnt the reason they lost. If the team scored 4 goals and won 4-1, and Doughty played the exact game, you wouldn’t have even mentioned him.
You’re just begging for attention and you know you’ll get some if you take the easy way out and call out their best defenseman.
He’s the only defenseman trying new things on rushes to generate more offense. He connects with every pass breaking out of the zone, while other Dmen miss, and that never gets mentioned on here.
You certainly don’t blame Mitchell for getting pick pocketed in front of their own net from Smyth last night.
Furthermore, since DS took over, Doughty by far has been consistently the teams best player (excluding Quick).
If you know anything about hockey, you would be devastated if he were traded. But the fact that you’re suggesting Doughty for Nash straight up… Well….

    zulov Reply:

@California Royalty, I’de agree with you. Some of the DD hate at the beginning of the season, especially during the TM end of days saga, was slightly warranted.

But it’s obvious if you’ve been watching the team all season that his game has picked up quiet a bit especially under DS, and he is actually skating far far better right now then earlier in the season.

I think he will improve more and more, and as soon as the league starts to write him off he’ll have another great year.

@Duncanz, Yea…I blame Shanahan for a lot of the horrible calls I have witnessed throughout the year…and not just calls against the Kings…I have stated before that I am a Kings fan, first and foremost, but I love hockey and will watch any game any time…These refs seem to be as confused as the players are on what is a penalty or what is not a penalty…It is distracting right now…Refs are looking to make calls and it is taking away from the play on the ice…there was a good flow going until that penalty…and it was obvious to me that the Oiler p[layer intentionally lifted Williams stick up into his face to draw a penalty…the ref was right there and still made the wrong call…player safety was ringing in that refs head…again…thanks Shanny

  15. goldielocks says:

Still not happy with 1 point because we had opportunities with those PPs but our PP was awful once again. And here’s my question.

We had 2 PP goals with JJ’s one-timer and rebound from DD’s one-timer. On those PPs, JJ was on the right side and DD was on the left side. But tonight they were back at their old positions. Why? Other than that, Kopi was stuck on the half board again. Wasn’t he moving around when PP was clicking? I remember he was even on the other side of the board. Our PP somehow looked very familiar to me.

One more thing I want to mention is, Stoll hasn’t been playing well lately. And I think I found out why. He sucks cause he’s still playing with the old system. I know he’s not a natural winger but everytime he gets the puck, he just dumps in to the corner. There was a moment when they rush in to the O-zone, Richards wants the puck but Stoll just dumped it in. Nothing developed afterward.

3 points out of possible 4 points sounds not that bad. But how can they build up the confidence with losing against the backup goalie again?

    [Reply]

    g smith86 Reply:

@goldielocks, Stoll is at least starting to win face offs again and not getting kicked out of the circle every time…hey look, the Kings looked a step behind most of the night, but they were able to claw themselves back into the game and started turning the tide in the third…that is commendable in my book…as far as “losing against a backup goalie again”…I feel your pain there, but the Edmonton skaters had a lot to do with the outcome too…sometimes you just have to tip your hat to them too

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @goldielocks,

I still think they get a boost of confidence from being able to come back and get themselves a point in the game. Like I said earlier, last month this would have been another 1-0 loss if not worse.

These guys know they’re not going to win every game, and sometimes they’re going to lose games they should win and vice-versa. That doesn’t mean there is nothing to build on. This team is mentally though. They’re going to get some much needed rest, regroup, and come out ready against Vancouver.

    Off topic:
I was going over some videos and found some footage of Brent Sutter behind the bench. He is talking to 2 players, and bear hugging them the same way Darryl does with our players. Brent is even talking over things with some players in another shot, and he reminds me of Darryl with his hand gestures and such. I thought this was just a Darryl thing until I saw that, and realized it’s more of a Sutter thing. Their probably totally different, but those few shots of Brent seemed almost like watching Darryl.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

@Dominick, Brent doesn’t quite come across to me as being very empathetic at all, always had the impression he was quite a sour personality and I couldn’t figure out, beyond the pedigree, how he has lasted so long at Flames especially during that tumultuous period before and after Phaneuf left. Perhaps in the games I’ve watched the cameras haven’t done him justice.
I always had a picture of DS as being a bit more animated and engaged.
What will be interesting to monitor, of course, is how his demeanor will change; with time, with pressure, when the team hits rough patches, at play-off time, and as there is more familiarity with the players. It’s going to be a very interesting character study for sure, I think and I’m hoping he manages through all the ups and downs and has a long and successful and respectable tenure with The Kings..

It will not be easy making the playoffs, but let all look at the NFL”s New York Football Giants as a prime example of digging deep and never giving up. I love the club that we have out there. Drew Doughty is slowly becoming my favorite King. He is such a joy to watch. You never know rather he is going to screw up or do something fantastic. He such a smart ass also. What do you do,LOL. You can’t hate the guy because he leaves it all on the ice. I know many of you dislike the guy, but we need him on this team. Here’s to everyone who has taken this day to recognize MLK and what he brought to the table. Peace!!! Let us all remember him with open hearts and minds, for the world lost a true American hero when he died. Peace out friends….

Just remember I think we have at least three back to back games next month. So hopefully that will not be an excuse, or we are in trouble.

@gene, agreed . . . kings are not the only team that plays back to back games. they are pros and are paid to gut it up. having said that, i think they will be fine.

Justin Williams: 8 goals, 14 minor penalities this year … 14 is alot for a forward who isn’t physical. Doesn’t make any sense to me. I guess I could stomach it if he had 15 goals or something …

@Press Box Scratch, I see what your saying, but just remember this, JW is one of many players that is starting to learn how to be a scorer again under Sutter. Cant imagine who, or what could have stunted his growth?
