Quick picked for All-Star Game

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick will represent the team at this year’s All-Star Game, to be held Jan. 29 in Ottawa. Quick joins fellow goalies Brian Elliott, Jimmy Howard, Henrik Lundqvist, Carey Price and Tim Thomas. The two All-Star teams will be determined by a player draft, to be held Jan. 26. Quick, a first time All-Star, will talk after today’s morning skate, which is going on right now.

    Dang it, he wasn’t supposed to make it! Totally destroys my whole west coast bias conspiracy theory (which is still true). Seriously, congrats to JQ, he is most deserving!!!

    Eric K Reply:

    @DesertKing, If you like west coast bias conspiracy theories… Anze Kopitar’s stats so far are basically level with Patrick Kane’s, despite his inconsistent stretches. Kopitar has a lesser supporting cast, and he also plays defense. Kane got selected.

    (Kopitar’s stats are also better than All-Star Mikko Koivu’s, but they had to pick someone from the Wild.)

    [Reply]

    dahack11 Reply:

    @Eric K, Kopitar dos NOT belong in the All star game period….i don’t care what Kane’s stats are.

    Selanne not getting selected is a travesty.

    [Reply]

    Josh Reply:

    @dahack11,

    Are you joking? Kopitar 100% deserves to be there and its a joke that he wasn’t selected. If he wouldn’t have gone through the goal scoring drought, he 100% makes it.

    Even with the drought, hes still a top 10 center and should be a staple of the all star game….

    ddc Reply:

    @DesertKing,

    here’s bias for you, only 5 players selected from the entire pacific division… yep, the division that sent 4 teams to the playoffs last year, and may do the same again this year… i hate the ducks, but no selanne is just flat out disrespectful…

    [Reply]

    ddc Reply:

    @ddc,

    and considering they have to send a player from each team, 5 players is the bare minimum for a division…

    [Reply]

    Hesperia STH Reply:

    @ddc, I read on Twitter that players like Selanne and Lindstrom asked to not be on All Star teams so that they can rest. I wish they would do like baseball acknowledge that they are All Stars and then replace them. That way they get the recognition.

    [Reply]

    Nickcypress Reply:

    @Hesperia STH, East Coast Bias is definitely not a theory. It’s so obviously real.

    ddc Reply:

    @Hesperia STH,

    i had heard that about lidstrom, but i hadn’t heard that about selanne (actually glad to hear that, though)… but that still doesn’t excuse the bare minimum for our division, i can list a half dozen other guys that could easily be on there ahead of some of the east coast players that made it…

    Hespeira STH Reply:

    @Nickcypress, I know east coast bias is real, I never said it wasn’t. I thought Quick should’ve been an All Star last year. It is a travesty how our division is regarded by most as one of if not the toughest division in the NHL. So to have the bare minimum is ridiculous. If Quck was back east they would’ve of crowned him the next Brodeur or Roy by now. Same with Kopi. It is funny how Mike Richards when he was in Philly was so highly regarded, not you barely hear any mention of him. Still the same player, just a different coast.

    vicarious Reply:

    @ddc, It should be called “time zone bias.”

    The east coast voters rarely see the west coast players play. Also happens in basketball. East coast papers are published early enough they can’t publish the west coast scores from the previous night.

    [Reply]

    ddc Reply:

    @vicarious,

    people still read actual newspapers? then it’s not “time zone bias”, it’s just plain dumb… if people are still relying on an outdated newspaper to tell you your daily information, then no wonder the collective IQ of this country is going down the toilet…

    but yes, you’re correct to a point, vicarious…

    Great for Quick, but still was hoping to see Kopitar make it as well. I think he is still supremely undervalued in the NHL (despite his current goal scoring slump). I’d take Kopi over a lot of the players who made it in if i was building a franchise today.

    Kingstane9 Reply:

    @Klong, also don’t get it, wasn’t that him scoring two nice gaols in ASG last year? But then again he’ll probably welcome some rest, giving this is post-injury season for him, so I’ll take that and of course, Congrat to Quicky!

    It’s still a little surreal that this franchise not only has an all-star goalie, but IMO the best goalie in the NHL right now.

    So proud of him. I’m sure he will be in the running for the Vezina. I think he should also be considered for the Hart too. He is BY FAR our MVP.

    @Canadian King, he’ll be the only reason I watch this year… maybe it’s just me, but the ASG just isnt what it used to be. Maybe it’s just that I’m older now and appreciate “real, good” hockey.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

    @Stuart, ASG never was anything worth watching. Ever. I think the last time I really watched was when we had our entire triple crown line as one of the all star lines.

    I have to admit, now that Quick made it I have to watch at least 1 period this year.

    I do like the skills competition though.
