Slava Voynov made it through the full practice but is unlikely to play tomorrow, Darryl Sutter said. Sutter had some high praise for Jonathan Quick, calling him “clearly the team’s best player,” and also had some praise for Kyle Clifford’s bounce-back game after a tough turnover that led to a goal in the Colorado game. More notes and quotes to come…
Quick is our MVP!

Who’s in charge of lakings.com? lead article says “Quick stops all 22 shots as Kings win 2-1″.
Clifford was great last night. Love watching him play. He’s so young and has so much potential.
Still can’t decide if last night’s game was a “good” game or just mediocre. But happy for the 2 points.
When will the Sharks catch up to us in games played?

@RedBear, I’ve noticed they are pretty delayed in giving updates. The attention must be going to the Lakers.

@RedBear, So far as I can tell, they and the NHL still think Dewey scored the winning goal, too (it was Jack Johnson, with an assist from Dewey, and another from whoever it was who passed it to him–forgot.)

@Eggplant, Yeah, I guess I could have checked to see who already got the assist…turns out Johnson got one too…interesting balance of karma in the universe.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Did they change the scoring to JJ? I didn’t see that, where was it posted? Love that it was Jack and not Drew (though he seriously needs to play better).

@RedBear, I tried to figure out when the Sharks would catch up in games. I’m not sure if I’m 100% right, but I think it’s actually when we meet them on March 20 that we should be tied in games.

In the Colorado game, that turnover happened because the 4rth line got caught out there too long, and couldn’t change. Unfortunate, but I was impressed that the way the turnover happened made Clifford take it upon himself to work on stick handling the puck against the boards, and the results were immediately apperant in the following game.
Good job Cliffy!

@Dominick, Kompon spent time this AM sending picks around the boards for players to take off the wall. Apparently someone thought if one guy has a hole in his game, he may not be alone.

@Dominick, I think the only way to improve is to learn from mistakes, its a bad sign when they make the same ones over and over. I think that’s what lead to the demise of TM. But that’s just my opinion.

@Mars, What led tp the demise of TM was benching Quick after 3 straight shutouts. The players clearly tuned him out after that.

I know im a little late and it was probably already mentioned…but as I repeatedly replayed the o.t. goal it is clear to me that after dd thru the puck into the crease it touched jj ‘s stick before it hit a coyotes player. No?

@thrustable, I argued the same; from my wife’s perspective, Doan’s stick was under JJ’s, thusa lifting him so the puck slid under and appeared to make contact. Not espousing her view, just offering the other side for you.

@thrustable, My take is that the team wants it to be DD’s goal to get him out of his goal scoring slump. Basically, I think JJ took one for the team.

There’ve been times on this site, when people claimed Jon Quick wasn’t even this teams best goaltender. I, personally, never doubted him (but I’ve always wondered whether Bernier had it in him to surpass him.)

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, I certainly think its a fair question. That being said, I think the thing that impresses me the most about Quick is his mental toughness. It is almost a certainty that if the Kings have a one goal lead or the game is tied going into the 3rd that Jon Quick will get the Kings one or two points. I have seen it so many times that it is almost money in the bank!

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Oh, I do remember those that said “Bernier will be the starting goaltender by the end of January … of last year”. I still think many King fans wildly over rate Bernier. Bernier’s NHL numbers are not impressive at all.

@KC23, Overall, maybe, but what about his 8-0-2 last year down the stretch to get us IN the playoffs? JQ WAS struggling, and it could be said it was JB who got us in. JQ IS playing out of his mind right now, and I’m thankful for that. Just what could JB do if he had regular playing time? I’m afraid we may never know in a Kings uni.

Quick has indeed been our MVP,but I’m concerned about him getting burned out come playoff time.

Dominick Reply:

@kingrussell, The burned out tag was because 2 years ago he played in the olympics, had to deal with the distractions of having his first kid being born, and started 72 games that season. He had also just turned 23.
The “burned out” tag shouldn’t be the only tag that matters.
He also used to swim in the crease, lose his concentration, and give up soft goals repeatedly when he wasn’t busy, lose track of the puck in traffic, slide out of position with over exhagerated movements, couldn’t sqaure to the shooters, and gift wrap passes to incoming forecheckers.
Improvements have been made in the last few years, and if anyones ready, it’s Quick.

Alec Martinez is most likely being showed to other teams scouts.
His trade rumours are soaring (they say Carolina, Long Island or Tampa Bay)

I LOVE the way Sutter makes a point of praising Clifford for a good effort following his turnover game. TM would have benched Cliffy for 3-4 games instead of helping him get through a mistake he obviously knew he made. Sutter is truly a “players” coach.

Good job Kyle, this is the character of this young man. He isn’t afraid to admit failure and or error. Then go right out and right it as well go beyond what others might to do to improve it.
Chipping pucks out along the wall in your own end is a big part of the game if you wish to play at this level.
Very happy with Kyle’s effort again.
Keep it going Cliffie…….Sutter is a great coach to build confidence it would appear, this is exactly what the Kings require.
