Voynov gets time to `reset the hard drive’

Slava Voynov has hit his first bump with the Kings. The rookie defenseman, called up for a second time this season in mid-November, has been a lineup regular since, regularly playing 17 or 18 minutes a game, including power-play time. Voynov will be a healthy scratch tonight, though, for the first time this season. Alec [...]

Coaching situation update

It’s Day 4 of Coach Watch with the Kings. Interim coach John Stevens will remain behind the bench for tonight’s game against Columbus, and it’s almost certain that Stevens will stay in charge of the team in Detroit as well. All signs still point toward Darryl Sutter joining the Kings as coach, sooner rather than [...]

Thursday skate update

Slava Voynov will come out of the Kings’ lineup tonight, to be replaced by Alec Martinez. John Stevens was not pleased with Voynov’s game at Boston and said he wanted to give Voynov a chance to “reset.” Also, on the third line, Trevor Lewis will be in instead of Trent Hunter. Stevens said there is [...]

Morning in Columbus

Oh, and you thought it couldn’t get more exciting than the morning view from Boston? Well, the joke is on you, friends. Here’s Columbus, gray, rainy, windy and…Columbus. The Kings are scheduled for their morning skate shortly, and Dean Lombardi is expected to update the coaching-search situation at some point this morning as well…

Evening reading: coaching change

The story of the Kings’ coaching change started on Monday, when Terry Murray was fired and replaced on an interim basis by John Stevens. The presumed long-term replacement is Darryl Sutter — there have been no other reported candidates — but Dean Lombardi has not spoken publicly about Sutter (or anyone). So the process is [...]

Who is that third-period team?

It’s fair to say there are some on-ice, split-personality issues going on with the Kings these days. Tuesday’s game against Boston was the latest in a recent trend in which the Kings look off-page in the early part of the game, then look like world-beaters in the third period. Part of the issue, of course, [...]

Lighter feel returns to practice

The quarters are fairly tight inside the Columbus practice rink, so the noise reverberates more than usual, but there was quite a bit of chatter and clatter on the ice for Kings practice today. The locker-room music, which had fallen silent yesterday, returned, and players seemed in better spirits after an average-length practice, but one [...]

Stevens, players talk about next step

The coach’s seat, for now, still belongs to John Stevens, who is expected to be behind the bench when the Kings play Columbus tomorrow. After today’s practice, and after Dean Lombardi met with players, Stevens said he’s aware that his status could change at any time, and that the Kings could hire a permanent coach, [...]

Wednesday practice update

Dean Lombardi held a post-practice meeting with the team — his second meeting with them in three days — but players left no indication that they had been told about the hiring of Darryl Sutter (or anyone else for that matter). Lombardi declined to give a further update on the coaching “search,” such as it [...]

Postgame notes (Dec. 13)

Some notes from last night’s game… – Once again, a lack of offense cost the Kings in a 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night at TD Garden. – The Kings extended their season-long losing streak to five games and are 13-13-4 for the season. – The Kings have now scored two or [...]

The view from Boston

The Boston Bruins are rolling right along. After their 3-7-0 start — Stanley Cup hangover, perhaps? — the Bruins are now 16-2-1 since the start of November. The Kings held the Bruins to 22 shots on goal last night, far below their season average, but by the third period, the Bruins were essentially in cruise [...]

The Key Three: Dec. 13

Turns out, the Kings’ scoring troubles sneaked into the cargo hold and followed them from Los Angeles to Boston. The Kings put the puck toward the net 80 times last night, including three shots off the post and one that landed on top of the net, but none of them went in. What was the [...]

Stevens postgame quotes (Dec. 13)

John Stevens’ postgame thoughts… (on the game…) STEVENS: “I think we saw a lot of things. I thought the guys tried really hard tonight. I thought they did a lot of good things in the offensive zone, and I thought they expended a lot of energy trying to win a hockey game, considering the emotions [...]

Kopitar postgame quotes (Dec. 13)

Anze Kopitar’s postgame thoughts… (on the continued lack of offense…) KOPITAR: “It’s pretty much the same story, I guess. We’re throwing everything we can out there. I think we had 41 shots and we had a couple of really good opportunities. We hit a couple posts. We’ve just got to keep going. Eventually we’re going [...]

Game 30: Bruins 3, Kings 0 (FINAL)

Finally, something normal: a hockey game. It’s the Kings against the Boston Bruins, with all the action on Fox Sports West and 1150-AM and affiliates, with all the game updates here as well… THIRD PERIOD In goal: It’s still Quick against Rask. Bruins 3, Kings 0: Just like in the second period, the Bruins got [...]

Mitchell out, day-to-day

Willie Mitchell will not play tonight because of a lower-body injury, the Kings said. It’s not immediately known whether the injury is related to Mitchell’s previous groin injury. [UPDATE: Davis Drewiske replaces Mitchell in the lineup. Trevor Lewis and Alec Martinez will be the Kings' healthy scratches.]

Scouting the Bruins

Tonight’s game — there’s a game tonight, remember? — is the first of two meetings this season between the Kings and Boston Bruins. The Kings have beaten the Bruins twice in each of the past two seasons, but three of the victories came in shootouts. The Bruins will be without injured top defenseman Zdeno Chara [...]

New coach? Lombardi wants it `done yesterday’

What a 48-hour period it was for Dean Lombardi. Sometime Sunday, Lombardi made the decision to fire Terry Murray. At the crack of dawn Monday, he made the cross-country flight to Boston, rode to the team hotel and delivered the news to Murray. Lombardi then talked to the assistant coaches, then held a meeting with [...]

Stevens on coaching change, future

Tonight, John Stevens will be in charge behind an NHL bench for the first time since Dec. 3, 2009, before he was fired in Philadelphia. [Thanks to Kevin Kurz for the correction.] In parts of four seasons as Flyers coach, Stevens went 120-109-34. Stevens is not in an unfamiliar spot tonight, taking over for Terry [...]
