Will the Kings send out 2011 with a victory or a loss against the Vancouver Canucks? All the action will be on Fox Sports West and on 1150-AM and affiliates, with all the game updates here as well…
THIRD PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick vs. Luongo.
Kings 4, Canucks 1: The Kings had been 2-for-44 on the power play, but they scored a huge power-play goal 9:33 into the third period. Slava Voynov found a little open ice and fired a wrist shot from the high slot. Justin Williams, in front of him, deflected the shot past Luongo. Jarret Stoll also got an assist.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Canucks 33-28 for the game.
SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick vs. Luongo.
Kings 2, Canucks 1: The Kings took the lead 8:20 into the second period. After a lengthy scramble around the Canucks’ net, during which nobody seemed quite sure where the puck was, Andrei Loktionov controlled it in the corner and fed a pass to Matt Greene at the right point. Greene fired a one-time that beat Luongo.
Kings 3, Canucks 1: Just nine seconds after the Kings killed off Mike Richards’ double-minor high-sticking penalty, they scored to take a two-goal lead. Jack Johnson passed to Justin Williams, who then did nicely in a tight space to find Anze Kopitar in the Canucks’ zone. Kopitar went 1-on-1 with Luongo in tight quarters and lifted a backhand shot over his pad with 6:52 remaining in the period.
End of period: The Canucks outshot the Kings 14-12 in the period, and threatened in the final two minutes, but the Kings held their two-goal lead at the end of a strong period.
FIRST PERIOD
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Jonathan Quick against the Canucks’ Roberto Luongo.
Canucks 1, Kings 0: The Kings came out with a new-look first line — Anze Kopitar centering Mike Richards and Dustin Brown — and on the game’s second shift, Jarret Stoll missed the net after a 1-on-1 look against Luongo. The Canucks didn’t miss their first scoring chance. Daniel Sedin, in the middle of the Kings’ zone, left a blind, backhand pass for Kevin Bieksa, who one-timed a shot past Quick just inside the near post at the 3:06 mark. Henrik Sedin also got an assist.
Kings 1, Canucks 1: The Kings tied the game at the 9:13 mark. Willie Mitchell passed right to Slava Voynov, who took the puck toward the net then took a tight-angle shot. Luongo made the save but couldn’t control the rebound. Brad Richardson jumped on the rebound and shot into Luongo’s pad, then got his own rebound and scored. Andrei Loktionov also got an assist.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Canucks 15-7 in the first period and, after they allowed the early goal, tied the game and had a handful of strong scoring chances over the final 10 minutes. Mike Richards had a 1-on-1 chance in front, with just over three minutes left, and hit the post.

-Keys to a Win in tonights game:
-Get physical -especially with the Sedins
-Positional play like against the Hawks
-DO NOT pair JJ and DD together on the powerplay! Should be Voynov and Mitchell.
-Quick will have to put on his superman costume..

Yes. Just because Penner has a big body doesn’t mean he needs to be physical. I’ve been saying this for a long time but TM forced him to play physical game. Penner is an excellent passer and shooter. Being physical isn’t his style. I’m glad Suter see that. Sutter sees the talent TM didn’t.

Exactly, now to be fair, I wrote a letter myself to Leiweke telling him to wait until the end of the season to find an exciting coach instead of making a hasty move. I didn’t see the first period, but from the second and third, I saw a great, solid game against a team that most people in the league would consider to be better than the Kings. Not only that, but I saw the other team’s strategy stifled, and the Kings really come into their own with confidence and a distinct knowledge that they were outplaying the other team, while not resting on their laurels or getting overly defensive. The Kings played all out continuously, best exemplified by taking a shot aimed to score with only about 20 seconds left in the game, even though they had a 4-1 lead. A fantastic effort by the Kings, and a great win over a top-ranked western conference team. Go Kings, go!

great home win against a very good team…
sutter has got them playing inspired hockey thus far…hopefully it will continue into the new year…
i was real worried about sutter losing his cool too early and too often…but he’s been steady and optimistic early on…it seems like he’s changed his tune since his calgary coaching days and is making the most out of his opportunity….
it’s good to be wrong about him and his instant impact on the team…
and even though changing coaches isn’t a panacea for the kings, they are starting to put together full 60 minute efforts – something that was significantly lacking before dr. freddy venkman’s arrival…
i tip my new years eve hat to you, mr. sutter…(!)
i guess an old dog can learn some new tricks – keep it up…
happy new year to all y’all and please be safe…
all the best to everyone…and our kings…in 2012…(!)

@Kingsfanone, Nope. Back in New York. Just returned from Times Square. Saw the Kings take a 2-1 lead first. What a win! Cry Baby, I am eating so much crow, you don’t know. I love Sutter! Thought he was great from the beginning. It’s interesting. He seems like the perfect fit with the Kings team. Here’s a coach who’s gotten such a bum rap, but the he’s hooked up with the Kings, and it just clicks. I think the reason he doesn’t yell at the players is because he sees how good of a team it is and how hard they worked already. Then he comes in and doesn’t prejudge anyone or try to fit them in a rigid system like TM. Look what he’s done with Ritchie, Lewis, and Doughty is playing like Mr. Norris now, And how about Voynov and Loktionov!

@Poorman,
Good for you! Geez, you’re really getting around the country lately!
I love Sutter patting the boys on the back and arms draped all over them on the bench with encouragement.
I admit I didn’t see this Sutter when Dean hired him, but he’s really been a breath of fresh air for this team!
Happy New Year, Poorman!

Just have to say one thing…the referees were HORRIBLE tonight. They must have been Canadian born. HORRIBLE!!!!. How do you not call a penalty when Cliffy and that custunk were rolling around in a clinch and a third custunk jumps in the pile to go after Cliffy. How is that not third man in? Please tell me something if you know,….are all of these Castunk fans that are all wearing those stupid jerseys and blue and green hair flown down here from Vancouver or do they live here? @TiredOfIt, Right you are! The Canucks are one of the dirtiest, cheapshot teams in the league and, because they’re Canadian, they’re given much wider latitude than other teams that play clean. I’m glad our boys were scrappy – they had to be, match force for force, cheap shot for cheap shot. And, they prevailed. Sweet.
