Wednesday skate update

Based on today’s morning skate, it appears that Andrei Loktionov will replace Simon Gagne as Mike Richards’ left winger. Darryl Sutter didn’t announce his starting goalie — “This isn’t baseball,” he reminded a Chicago reporter — but Jonathan Quick was in the locker room first. Sutter also didn’t offer an update on Gagne. Here’s how the Kings are expected to line up…

Richardson-Kopitar-Brown
Loktionov-Richards-Lewis
Penner-Stoll-Williams
Clifford-Fraser-Westgarth

Scuderi-Doughty
Mitchell-Voynov
Johnson-Greene

Quick
Bernier

    @Ian,

    Not going to happen for two reasons:

    1. Westy isn’t on the ice long enough to get in a fight.

    2. Scott is man-mountain and after what he did to Clifford, no King wants to take him on.

    [Reply]

    jmiller Reply:

    @DesertKing, he whipped Clifford too? I know Westy got beaten bad by Scott. Really no one should mess with him.

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

    @DesertKing, Yep. He really put a beating on Westgarth last year. Bloodied him up pretty good. The guy’s arms are about a foot longer than Westy’s and Westy looked like a child swinging at air while repeatedly getting tagged right on the button. But then, I’m trying to remember Westgarth winning a fight…….. Hmmm, can’t recall one.

    DesertKing Reply:

    @Jmiller

    Maybe I was wrong and it was Westy, but I was pretty sure it was Clifford since it seemed to me that was the last time he just jumped in punching and since then he plays it a little smarter.

    I am still a little skeptical and I don’t think I would have hired DS personally. BUT I do like the results so far and am fully on board with the decision now that it is made.

    On paper the Penner-Stoll-Williams line should be more than solid, but when Penner and Stoll are each in the single digit point totals…Would love to see this line get hot and steal 4 or 5 games for us. If Stoll and Penner want another contract in this league that exceeds $1 Mil, they need to to step up production FAST.

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, You make a good point. I almost feel bad for them being snakebit in a contract year, but what you say is true. Both of their stock is dropping like a rock and if they want to have any negotiating leverage at all they’ll need to start making things happen. Unless of course they’ve got Doughty’s agent.

    CheezyPoofs Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, I was thinking something similar as well. Lewis is suited well for #3/4C. Having him on the with two solid vets who have hands and can skate helped him out. Lokti can skate but he’s lost out on the wing. Lewis should be #3R tonight and Willy moved to #2R give him stability while simultaneously making the 3rd line more solid.

    I’m also becoming a fan of Sutter. I like the players. In the final analysis, this is DL’s job on the line. Seems like there’s a pretty good chance the team will turn things around. The vibe seems much better since the TM firing. Also agree with the MOSH post. Why doesn’t the NHL just say what the injuries are. That policy needs to be changed. Another thing I’d change while we’re at it. Years ago, there was an All Star game with a sparkling puck. The NHL used it only that 1 time. Most of you never saw it. It was easy to see the entire time. This was not the FOX tracker puck that I’m talking about. That sucked. This sparkling puck made it infinitely easier for fans to follow the action. Ultimately, that is one of the problems in growing the sport. Viewers need to be able to follow the puck. This sparkling puck would solve the problem.

    370455vinSD Reply:

    @Poorman, I guess these are kinda non-issues for me. It doesn’t take much more than a few viewings to get a handle on following the puck, if someone can’t commit to that chances are they are never going to be fans anyway. Since I don’t play fantasy or bet on hockey I can wait until the real information gets released on injuries. All I really want to know is how long a player will be sidelined and that information is usually available within a few days. I do agree however that DL’s job is in jeopardy though. Too bad because I think he has assembled a pretty good core and is only a sniper away from a team that could contend for a few years.

    [Reply]

    BigMikeonD Reply:

    @Poorman, I am a gigantic Hockey fan. I would love to see more people into the sport I love. I’m not sure that following the puck alone is the problem. Hockey has a lot of unique rules, (icing, fighting, 3 periods, etc.). Most people don’t understand it. Following the puck is part of it but not all of it. If you turn on a game and know nothing about it it’s hard to get. There is a lot of action but when you don’t get it its not the same. My son started playing Rugby last year. I learned the rules, now I get it and have an appreciation for the sport. If more people got it more people would watch. The NHL also needs to do a better job of making it cool for young kids. Most kids play baseball, basketball, football, etc. because its what they know and is cool. In Canada just about all love it because they all have played it and get it. As much as I love it, I loved it way more once I started playing it.

    I would rather see Justin Williams playing up with Mike Richards instead of Lewis, but whatever. Maybe it would get Williams some confidence and more offensive looks playing with a guy he played with in Philly…

    Also, I’m glad the Kings have been doing better lately, but there really isn’t much difference in the overall system of play that I can see. Just more communication and more fire, which is all one can really ask for. Also, riding the hot hand w/Quick is all and fine, but isn’t there a fear of burning Quick out? Bernier should be getting some time between the pipes. But I know Sutter likes to stay with his #1 and run him into the ground… Only time will tell…

    That said,… GO KINGS!

    Let’s do this thing and beat the Hawks!

    [Reply]

    FdoFmFull Reply:

    @mash-ola, I’d suggest that the changes have been suble. For example, the forecheck is better, more shots from closer in (high slot), dmen pinching in more, better slot presence, a few diagonal passes (not enough back-doors though), and a few more one-time shots (players should take lessons from Voynov!). Also, more power moves to the slot from Brown and Kopitar (Penner needs to take note).
    Not much changed in the defensive approach, except that I’m seeing better slot coverage by the weak side winger.
    Somewhat better transition emphasizing finding the open forward, but still need quicker outlets.
    JQ still botches up 3-4 pucks behind the net and I’ve yet to see DS’s hand in correcting this.

    The intensity, effort, and drive have picked up and along with results, the confidence level is picking up.
    Regarding Bernier, until he’s given a handful of games in a short span (not likely anytime soon), he won’t be able to show DS what he’s got.

    I don’t know what all the hate on Lewis is all about, but dude has been hustling his butt of and been playing real hard. No, he’s not scoring, but I don’t expect him to right now. He’s trying to recover his game after being sat for so long. You don;t have to score to be effective. SOMEONE does, but Lewis is not that someone.

    Didn’t anyone pay attention to the line of Richardson-Richards-Lewis last game when Gags went down? That line was AWESOME! Menacing, Aggressive….I think it could do damage if put together again, but I can see why Sutter didn’t do it here. Lokti hasn’t done well with Kopi in a first line role and Richardson has. The best shot Lokti has is with Richards to score. Hopefully Lewis can become the forechecker on that line and Lokti can be the F3 and maybe get shome shots.

    We must have the most expensive 3rd line in hockey today. I hope they pick up the scoring quick.

    @Cynic, Agree 100%!
    The quickness and persistence that Richardson and Lewis bring to the top-6 is what allows the playmaker and sniper on each of their respective lines to shine in the o-zone. The simple recognition and acknowledgment of this approach in modern hockey highlights a key difference between DS and TM. Size, power, and grit are essential. However, in the absence of speed and quickness, they’re insufficient.

    I think this is good. Sutter is saying hey Richardson and Lewis are first round picks, why don’t we use them as such. Remember during the Murray era players didn’t get extended time in any positions. Young guys got one or two games before they were told they weren’t ready. Or switched wings or positions. People have to realize Loktionov might not be the guy who just jumps in and gets it. We all know he has it, but his problem is he’s a little behind the pace it just takes time. I also think Sutter wants more out of the Stoll line, which isn’t a bad veteran line if they get it going.

    [Reply]

    DanD Reply:

    @kings king, Just because you are a first round pick doesn’t mean you are destined to be a scorer in the NHL. Obviously players taken in the first round are typically expected to put up numbers, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Lewis’ skill is his penalty killing ability & speed, same with Richardson (who was a 5th round pick in 2003 by the way). You have to look at their strengths and play them as such, not play them based on the round they were drafted in.

    You wonder why the Kings can’t score. The other teams put up their best defensive players against the Kings’ top 2 lines, and it doesn’t matter who matches up against the bottom 2 lines, they won’t score.

    I just crunched some numbers. (Work is painfully slow)
    The bottom 6 players have a combined 13 goals and 32 assists for an astounding 45 points. To make things even worse, I included Williams who has played most of the year in a top 6 role. Replace him with Waivers Hunter and I don’t even think you crack 40 points. Forty points between 6 players! That’s just under 7 points per player!!!!
