Will the Kings get a shiny new bicycle tonight, or a lump of coal? It’s the Kings and the San Jose Sharks, with all the action on Fox Sports West and on 1150-AM and affiliates, and with all the game action here as well…
OVERTIME
In goal: It’s still Quick against Niemi.
SHOOTOUT
Sharks: Pavelski, save.
Kings: Stoll, save.
Sharks: Handzus, save.
Kings: Kopitar, save.
Sharks: Boyle, post.
Kings: Brown, save.
Sharks: Clowe, GOAL.
Kings: Richards, save.
THIRD PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick against Niemi.
End of period: The Sharks outshot the Kings 34-26 in regulation (including 14-9 in the third period).
SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick against Niemi.
Sharks 1, Kings 0: San Jose took the lead 7:53 into the second period. Ryane Clowe battled in the corner of the Kings’ zone, then pushed the puck to the inside of the left circle, to Logan Couture, who quickly fired a high shot past Quick. Patrick Marleau also got an assist.
Kings 1, Sharks 1: The Kings tied the game with a power-play goal with 1:08 remaining in the second period. Mike Richards sent the puck behind the net, and Anze Kopitar picked it up in the corner. Kopitar then sent a cross-ice pass back to Richards in the right circle. Richards settled the puck with his skate, then beat Niemi with a wrist shot to the far post. Drew Doughty also got an assist on Richards’ team-high 13th goal of the season. The Kings had scored just one power-play goal in their previous eight games.
End of period: The Sharks outshot the Kings 15-10 in the second period.
FIRST PERIOD
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Jonathan Quick against the Sharks’ Antti Niemi.
Lineup: Trent Hunter replaces Kevin Westgarth in the Kings’ lineup tonight.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Sharks 7-5 in the first period, and both goalies were sharp, with a handful of goal-saving stops between them. The Kings went 0-for-1 on the power play (with zero shots on goal) and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

I’m gonna say we score 1 in the first period. And I’ll agree, I’ll say we score 3 goals this game in regulation. (I don’t know why I’m saying that) — But I won’t predict the outcome. I’m not sure if we’re going to win 3-2 or lose 7-3.

It’s too bad LA played a tough game against rival Ducks last night, otherwise they would be winning. SJ has been out played for most of this game.

@goldielocks, speaking of vocal part of the game, I hate how I am forced to only watch with the Sharks announcers. They are so bad it is unbearable. They spent the entire period reminding their fans why LA is a terrible team while praising their team for being the best the league has ever seen. Did they forget SJ chokes in the playoffs? Their 2nd best guy is practically done for the season? Or that LA is only 3pts behind them. I really don’t like homer announcers. That’s not your job, just call the game. If I want you opinions I’ll listen after the periods or after the game.

@Scott,
We have the fairest announcers and that makes the others look even homer. Sometimes, I get frastrated becuase of Foxy’s too fair comment but I’m glad we have him and Bob.
Those announcers with SJ, they can say whatever they want but our players never pull the hamstrings by just getting on the ice. You simply can’t do that as a professional athlete. What a dumb …

Scott Reply:

@goldielocks, Very valid point. I still think that Heatley for Havlat (+ others) trade was highway robbery by Min. Havlat is painfully injury prone.
I like how Miller and Fox are fair. Watching homers just makes watching them unwatchable. Bos and NY sports teams are also guilty of this (but they have championships to go with their loud mouthed announcers).
Well this should be interesting…

Quick observations:
The Kings are hawking after the puck instead of standing in their stationary zone and waiting for the other teams to attack. Like I had said before, this is a DS-style plan.
Cycling the puck seems to be a new sensation for the Kings. Yes, TM, it is allowed!
Drives to the net also seem to be in abundance. Goals will come if it continues!
Although the F3 and the D1 are getting more into the offensive attack and exposing the Kings to 2-on-1′s, having JQ in net is worth the chance.
Other than the PP, the Kings look like they can compete against SJ.

Twas 2 nights before Christmas and all through the arena,
The Kings PP was full of anemia,
The Kings took sbots from the points with care,
In hopes that someone would tip the puck in from there,
But from the seats there arose a loud clatter,
it was Sharks fans filling their bellies with laughter,
For the Kings were on the PP again,
With no hope that the puck would go in,
As Kompon stood behind the bench with a sneer,
He shouted to the players hoping they would hear,
On Penner, on Kopi, on Doughty too,
Keep the puck on the sideboards then shoot and hope it goes through,
But as opponents find each year,
The best Christmas present is the Kings PP which you don’t have to fear.

@DesertKing,
To SJ fans,
Twas the night before the night before Christmas
when the Kings powerplay seemed so listless,
the Sharks take a penalty with all their might,
knowing not a King PP goal was in sight.
But bringing Kings fans hopes and cheers,
a PP goal was scored much to San Jose’s fears.
Not blasted from the point like of past shot,
but rather one passed easily through the slot.
Kopitar providing the gift to be presented,
for all San Jose fans to have resented.
A PP effiecency like one so needed,
a shot into the net that would not be impeded.
For all throughout the arena knew it was a cinch,
a PP goal that would make Mike Richards a grinch.

YES! Man can Richards finish!!!!! Too bad he isn’t a winger for Kopi!
The big thing was him yelling at DD to give up the puck hogging and get it back to the point. I’m so sick DD puck hogging. Richards was flagging down a 747 with his gestures to DD.
GKG!
[Reply]
Dominick Reply:
December 23rd, 2011 at 9:07 pm
@Bama Kings, Richards was directing the puck to the point so he could exploit the open space on the right. Puck hogging had nothing to do with it, but feel free to DD bash.
[Reply]
Bama Kings Reply:
December 23rd, 2011 at 9:13 pm
@Dominick, The point was Richards had to practically do jumping jacks to get the puck out of DD’s hands. And I’m glad the guy has a few assists in the last game, but only one was a first assist. He’s not setting up plays and he continues to make knuckle head plays holding onto the puck.
It’s an observation of DD’s play in my opinion.
[Reply]
Dominick Reply:
December 23rd, 2011 at 9:17 pm
@Bama Kings, He raised his stick to point to the point. He wasn’t trying to get the puck out of DD’s hands. That’s just absolutely ridiculas.
Bama Kings Reply:
December 23rd, 2011 at 9:40 pm
@Bama Kings, Why was he pointing to the point over and over again, it wasn’t to get the puck out of DD’s hands? Was he pointing at a steak buffet?
He was pointing cause DD either didn’t see the open guy or wasn’t passing it. Either way, the “dangler” is coughing up the puck by holding it too long or missing pass options.
Thus, MR waiving his stick for 4 seconds so DD would “release possession” of the puck.
He sure as heck wasn’t telling him to hold it. . .
Way to go Ricky! Nice pass Kopitar!

@HockeyOnlyAwaitingModeration, So are you saying Richards and Gagne are worse then Smyth and Simmonds? Stoll, while playing poorly this year, is just as good as Zues. Poni sucked last year, so replacing him with Richardson isn’t a big dropoff. That leaves Gagne and Richards, and Smyth and Simmonds. IMO that’s a big improvement from last years team, yet they’ve gotten way worse.

@Dominick, I still want to see the D become even more involved in the offensive zone. We have waaaay too much talent there, with DD, JJ, VV, even Martinez and Mitchell, to not use them more offensively. They need to get into the full rotation on the cycle. The far D man is frequently holding the point still, even when there is no opposing player within twenty feet. I’d like to see them cheat in more, especially when the puck comes to them. All around, still just a bit too passive. They are taking baby steps, but they need to start taking grown man steps.

Over the last 8 games: 12 goals on 286 shots, a 4.2%. It’s not for a lack of shots, its for a lack of finishing. Gagne, where are you? Did you play tonight? Stoll should take all his shots during the game by kicking up his left leg first (a la the shoot out) cause that seems the secret to his accuracy.
And, yes, Niemi played well, but which is more likely:
(a) Every single goalie the Kings play against plays lights out, or
(b) The Kings cant shoot.
The Kings have managed to make the opposing goalie one of the stars of the game six times in the last 8 games, and Detroit didnt need a star goalie in their win over us.
The system is there, the defensive play is stellar, but you need some guys who can both play tenacious defense AND shoot at least a little when the opportunity arises.

@TiredOfIt, Sure, but Calgary sure wouldn’t. I’m talking realistic trades.

@PP Anybody?,
Bernier and Brown for Iginla isn’t realistic either for a guy who’s 34 and in the last year of a contract.

@PP Anybody?, I hope never. Calgary’s been rumored to want to rebuild, so trade them young guys. How about Lewis, Hickey, Moller, and a 1st round pick. Lewis gives them a 3rd line Center, Hickey a top d-prospect, Moller an offensively talented youngster, and a nice pick to rebuild with. I wouldn’t trade 2 roster players for a guy at Iginla’s age and cap hit.

@CB14, I’d be happy with that too, but that’s not what Iginla is gona take to get. Minimum One of Brown/JJ/VV/Bernier, plus someone else and possible picks.
Personally, I’d just like to still see some more offensive changes to the “system”. I do see some glimpses of hope, but it just shows that management needs to commit to changing all the way. If they just dabble their toes in it, and have no more success at scoring(like so far), I just see a possible reactionary move of players instead.

@PP Anybody?, Two of those three aren’t going anywhere.

Wait … first 3 shooters have to be in the order they give to the zebra, right? If so, Boyle was the wrong guy to take a shot? Is that even legal?

@goldielocks, Good point…of course, you need perceptive referees, which we only had 50% of tonight

@TiredOfIt,
Here’s the rule
Three (3) players from each team shall participate in the shootout and they shall proceed in such order as the Coach selects.
If I’m not mistaken, Burns jumped out of the bench when Boyle started to take off. Why would he do that?

Moving on to Monday. I hope all you Insiders have a very Merry Christmas. Good night all.

@neil, You can bet Smith will be in goal for them as LaBarbra gave some easy ones up tonight.

Seven points in the last five games. That is not absolutely terrible.
What I saw, again, tonight was a lack of “net presence” by the Kings. Too many times when shots got through there was zero or one King near the net with two Sharks right there. “Skate hard to the net” is the first thing a mini-mite learns…

@Michael J., You’re right MJ…7 out of 10 is not bad. I think the hatred for the Sharks is coming out tonight. Frustrating

We need TM antyvirus program. It is not easy to overcome all those bad habbits developed last months.Very good game, exept not enough goals. I think a trade is on Dl todo list.I hope Dl already looking for…In Colombus presents of 8-9 scouts mean something.

@goldielocks, Carter anytime, but they aren’t going to let him go after they have signed him for long term. But it would be nice.

The only thing worse than losing to the Sharks, is losing to Sharks fans. Most of them aren’t even fans, but are still obnoxiously self-righteous… and I can say that because I live among them and call them friends. lol

@FiG17, I find the Sharks fans to be the least knowledgeable throughout the league, always screaming for a penalty on even legal contact with their players and not understanding basic rules.

@bbb7, At least they are screaming, did you hear how loud there building was tonight. I was at the Ducks game last night it was sad how quiet staples is. The only other fan in my section cheering was a ducks fan.

@Purple and Gold,
It’s a really, really small stadium. You put the fans of Staples Center in there and it would be just as loud. Also, they are terrible at maintaining their chants. lol
BR and TL are not top 6 players period. We lost because of that. DL will fix it.
Merry Christmas

@King-C, I’d trade TL in a heart beat, but I don’t think you’ll find another hard worker as BR with the exception of Brownie.

this team needs to score more than 1 or 2 goals….is not fair to QUICK OR BERNIE to play their arses off and get no help offensively….we lack finishers!!!period….lewis and richardson love their hussle and speed adn attitude but they just arent top 6 forwards…jw and gagne need to step it up for this team to be successful….dl youve made the coach change now trade for atleast a proven sniper(not that gagne adn jw arent)
we just need to help our goalies offensively, they are doing their job by keeping us in games..
QUICKIE WAS A BEAST TONIGHT IN THE LOSS
GO KINGS GO

I don’t want to get lambasted by anyone, ’cause I know how most of you feel, but I feel our best trade would be Kopitar. For three years I have said that he is a very streaky player and has a lack of “fight”. Yes, he is our top scorer (MR is now), but he is not an opportunistic scorer (finisher) and just seems to lack tenacity. He appears to underachieve during our slumps and has not been scoring like he should be. When the chips are down he usually is not there to pick up the team as you would expect a top forward to do. I have seen this too many times from him to think differently. Just my opinion.
