Darryl Sutter’s postgame thoughts…
(on the game…)
SUTTER: “It was a hard-fought game for us. I thought we had a good start and did a lot of good things. We can improve on some of those things, get better at some of those things.’’
(on what he liked…)
SUTTER: “I liked the way our forwards played. I thought they were really good in all three zones. I think we moved the puck pretty good. I know our power play didn’t score, but they certainly had a lot of good opportunities, and that’s a good thing. And then obviously, to kill that power play in overtime, against three or four of those guys that they put on the ice, we did a good job. Mitchell and Greene and Stoll and Richards and Kopitar, they really did a good job.’’
(on Doughty’s play…)
SUTTER: “He will get better. I think both of those kids, Johnson and Doughty both, have huge upside and we’ve got to work on that.’’
(on his emotions today…)
SUTTER: “I was pretty focused all day. I was thinking more about how to use your players. It’s like I told them before the game. `You guys better pay attention, because I’ll get Mike Richards and Brad Richardson mixed up. [laughs]’’
(on Brown and Richards…)
SUTTER: “As I said, I think our forwards were good. I don’t think it’s based on who scores the goals. I think they’ve got to work together. Brown’s goal is a great play by Kopitar.’’
(on his return to the bench…)
SUTTER: “There’s nothing like game day. Even when I was sitting upstairs, game day is still the best part of the whole game.’’
(on improved energy on the bench…)
SUTTER: “It’s no big deal. That’s no big deal. It’s really got nothing to do with me. These young guys, that’s a big reason why I came, these young guys and then the quality of the type of people that we have with our veterans. That’s really important. We’ve just kind of got to edge our way along. If we had lost 3-2 tonight in a shootout, I’d still be saying the same things, and some of us would not be agreeing with me. You’ve got to walk before you can run. Like I said yesterday, it’s a 3-2 league and it was 3-2 again.’’
(on how he picked the players for the shootout…)
SUTTER: “That’s who they used in Toronto, right? It worked pretty good there. I just wanted to confirm with them, because the goalie tonight is a right-hand catcher and not a left-hand catcher, so it does sometimes make a difference to some players.’’
A coach who says it like it is.

@In the Net, Completely agree with all the comments here. DD was very active offensively but even on replays you could see that he lacked effort getting back to cover the second man rushing in when Scuds had the first man covered. Am not saying that I didn’t like the offensive effort of the Dmen during the game but you can’t forget what position your playing out there. Too many times we have one of our forwards covering at the point for a D man that goes beyond rushing the puck.
Subtlety is good PR but I can only imagine what is being said behind closed doors as to the play of certain players who earlier this season felt they ruled the roost!!

I’m sorry, but I freaking love the hiring of Sutter. Like I said on another forum, Sutter actually coaches during a game. He’s talking to players after shifts, giving them direction. Murray didn’t do that. Murray was more of a, “Okay, I gave your orders before the game, now go do them. It’s up to you guys when the game starts.”.
Don’t get me wrong, Murray got them to where they are defensively, but Sutter is going to get them to another level. The Kings will be leading the Pacific by the end of January.
Loved how the forwards take the puck to the net, and would go to the front of the net without the puck. Sutter is EXACTLY what this team needed.

@jess, I think we should keep JMFJ around just to see how astonishingly bad he can get. His Minus Two tonight makes him as team-leading Minus Twelve for the season. How can anyone be so dreadful?
I believe he is now 521 on the Kings’ All-Time plus/minus list — out of 526.
His giveaway behind the net for the Ducks’ second goal was classic JMFJ. Game on the line, JMFJ goes braindead.
JMFJ is a Minus Eighteen since he briefly led the team with a Plus Six on October 28. He is utterly bereft of hockey sense.

@jess, no disrespect, but Slava Voynov is substantially better than JMFJ. Voynov knows the game, JMFJ is clueless. I admit to having harbored however briefly some hope for JMFJ due to his outstanding October, but the last two months have once again brought out the true JMFJ. If he plays like this for another ten years, I believe he will have the worst plus/minus in the history of the National Hockey League.

How about some of those oasses that fall into the category of “simple”, that is, 10′-15′ passes that are the easiest choice, instead of forcing a pass or just giving it to the opposition by being lazy.

Great game tonight. I’m excited to roll through the Sharks tomorrow with the same lineup — same lines — same energy. (except with Bernier in net, of course)
Richardson looked fantastic on the top line. He recovered a ton of pucks and opened up a lot of space for Kopi and Brown. And frankly — he made some skill plays I didn’t know he had in him.
Lewis played spotty — but lets see if he can’t bring it around.
Williams was a monster out there — I haven’t seem him skate so hard all year.
I enjoyed watching the game — we looked confident with the puck, cycled the puck well and made a lot of very smart plays. Lets keep it rolling.

@CabbagesAndKings, I think Richardson fits on the top line because he complements Brown. As we have seen Brown is a right wing who likes to go left and roam pretty much wherever he wants. Now Richardson on the other hand, you can put that kid in any spot and he’ll fill it. He’s also one of the fastest skaters out there AND he’s great on the forecheck. Add Kopitar to that, get the puck to him and he’ll make things happen. Just like Brown’s goal tonight. Penner would also be a good fit with those guys if he could finally get his feet under him. He looked decent at the start of this game but was left in the shadow that Williams and Stoll’s huge presence cast on the ice. I was sure Stoll was going to score tonight, he came really close.

Suttle differences in how the Kings played tonight. Some things will take some time to weed out, and some things looked a lot better. Possession time seemed to have a better focus. The cycle had more misdirection. 2nd and 3rd chance opportunities. Penatration right down the middle with wide open players. Nutral zone had a little less clutter, and the puck kept moving forward.
San Jose is no slouch on defense, so the game should have a different feel than tonight, but as long as the Kings are focusing on the areas they need too, things should improve with more time.

@FRO, I agree. The Sharks play a heavy game whenever they play us. Being a possession team just adds to their size and strength.
Kings this season have a losing record against possession style teams, and aside from the lack of scoring, the Kings haven’t been able to defend against those kind of teams because they won’t skate with them. Slow and boring only works if you can slow them down, and so far (against possession teams) the Kings have elected to try to slow them down instead of skate against them, and attack with speed.
I think if they keep their feet moving, the Kings can win.
[Reply]
certainly do see improvement but still need to learn to finish. nice win on to san jose. GKG

I already saw a couple big differences in their play. They enter the offensive zone with a lot more speed (which Fox caught, actually) and the puck isn’t spending too much time on anyone’s stick in the offensive zone, which I think was a big problem before, because it’s easier to play defense against players who keep the puck too long.

I was one of the last to turn on TM but looking back it was not his system but some of his decisions, particularly when he put Hunter on Kopi’s line for a couple of games to wake up the team but all it did was destroy Kopi. That was just an awful decision and is when I turned against him. If you check you will see that was the end of Kopi’s scoring touch and he has not been the same since. He was top ten in scoring at that time and although I haven’t looked lately( afraid too) I doubt he is top 30 now. It look DS only two practices to see how good Hunter was and that is why he was scratched tonight and hopefully for ever.

I give Sutter a few games to see what the players are like in person and then he will start out-coaching other teams. Seemed that TM didn’t do much adjusting during the games except changing line combinations.

@FM3, Did he really change line combinations? I know he had to plug a couple holes for a few minutes, like when Stoll went out, and he gave Brownie at least one double shift.

@FM3, I found it telling when DS was right on Kompon’s shoulder watching him “draw up” a quick PP in OT… I totally thought he was looing to see what if anything JK brings to the team. I would like to know what he thought of what he saw… Then JK pointed at DD kind of like letting him know it was going to get to him, but they lost the FO so we’ll never know…

@FM3, We had a 4 on 3 for the final 30 seconds of regulation and when Kompon was drawing it up for the guys Sutter was looking over his shoulder and didn’t appear to be buying into what Kompon was selling. Of course, we got nothing out of the play. I just can’t se keeping Kompon on the payroll unless Sutter wants to develop him too.

@40YearKingsFan, Would have been awesome had DS been disgusted by
that play that Kompon drew up, grabbed him by the shoulders, stood him up and
slapped him the way Moe used to slap Larry. “What are you? A numb skull?”

@toemas_sandstrom, Now that’s funny!
I think Richards is an emerging star for the kings

Kings need the power play to start working to compete with the heavyweights in the conference. Tomorrow would be a great time to start.

@Mikey J., A functioning PP I what gets you to that elusive 3 goals and eventually the W!

Great game tonight. To bad for that late goal by Ducks. amazing though after one win with Sutter everyone is on his side now. Two days ago 70% of the board was against him. Glad I thought he was a good fit. Now lets go kick some Shark butt. Go Kings GO!!

I liked the speed that Ritchie brought to the first line. Lewie looked pretty good out there too. Best move was to scratch Hunter.

Excellent defensive play and good speed in transition for a change… now if ONLY we could not need 35 shots every game to get to TWO goals.

I was pretty apprehensive about the Sutter hire, but I’m feelin better about it more and more. If nothing else, it’s refreshing to read some different takes in the post game comments.

@colo king fan, I would take Darryl back as a coach any day – trouble is we have his brother doing that – can’t wait to see the Kings play the Flames. Kings fans you just got one of the best in the league. Flames and Sutter fan.

Two seasons ago our PP was lights out. Remember the cannucks series until they figured us out? We have the same players plus richards and gags. So why can’t we have the dominant PP again?

Great puck movement in the 1st period!! Lost some energy on some bad penalties and regained the spark! How long before Penner the slug is in the dog house siitting on the bench. Slow and effort level no where near his line mates…
Sutters demand could be a good thing.

Penner looked out of it tonight.

@Kings in CO, Everyone knows I’m not a Penner fan but he’s twice as good as Gagne.
Gagne is lazy and will not engage anywhere, he is aweful

@Kings in CO, ya it wasn’t his best game by far

Who besides me, really liked Richie on that first line? He added speed, got to loose pucks, and made a couple of nice plays. Good move by coach Sutter…
And Penner looked like his old sluggish self, instead of the new and improved Penns.

Agree about Penner. He did not play well.
