Scouting the Ducks

This is the fourth of six meetings this season between the Kings and Anaheim Ducks, with the Kings holding a 2-1-0 record (with one shootout win) so far. Who would have guessed, at the start of the season, that the Kings and Ducks would have two new coaches? It’s the Kings’ Darryl Sutter, in his debut, against the Ducks’ Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau has only two wins in nine games since taking over for Randy Carlyle, but one of those wins was against the Kings, on Dec. 6 at Honda Center, a game that helped lead to the departure of Terry Murray as Kings coach. For the latest on the Ducks, check out The Orange County Register’s blog, followed by the expected lineups for both teams and the Ducks’ full roster…

    @jess, I agree it looks tough for sure, I just want to clarify in my opinion…..some are saying Clifford is to be doing the job of Simmonds since he was traded. Really, how in heck do you do that with 4th line minutes, Simmer always got 3rd line or better minutes.

    Cannot compare for that very reason.

    go kings go

    @Harty, I agree with your opinion, but I believe the reasoning was at the start of the season for 10+ games Clifford was used as the 3rd line LW and in TMs opinion was not doing a good enough job, and got demoted to the 4th line.

    @luc20rules, Sorry to disagree he was used for 2 games and then up and down during games for brief stints…….here is the issue that many give. You need many games to prove what you can do not 1-5 games, if you were correct (which your not) then Kyle would still be up there. Murray gave him 2 games and Kyle went -3 in plus / minus and because Murray wanted more responsibility out he came.

    @petemagoop, why not?

    Niko Reply:

    @king lopez, it would take so much to get him, and it wouldn’t be worth it for a guy who only has a few solid years left imo

    jess Reply:

    @king lopez,

    Probably would have to give up too much depth for someone on the wrong side of his prime.

    jess Reply:

    @Niko, Jinx!

    petemagoop Reply:

    @king lopez, I don’t know, he’s what 34, 35? think you’d have to give up too much for a guy on the downside IMO. One more year left at 7M, then I’d imagine the Flames resign him – being from Edmonton, he could finish his career out there if the Flames don’t want him

    luc20rules Reply:

    @king lopez, It would cost too much in prospects, players, & draft picks, also too take his 7 mil/year cap hit would be difficult. I suppose if Penner was part of the package out it might work Brown looks better at LW and Iginla can stay at RW. But with how Penner’s played why would Calgary want that? I would have to think it would be more likely that Jeff Carter demands to be traded as Columbus is 20 pts out of a playoff spot at the end of January, and the Kings are able to send Penner and enough draft picks/prospects to let Columbus save some face while seemingly unintentionally tank the remainder of the season to earn a their top draft pick. Not to mention that Jeff Carter is signed to a deal similar to Mike Richards thru 2021-22 season at a cap friendly 5,272,727/year contract. I can’t imagine that Carter wants to be in Columbus until 2022? Plus we know Carter and Richards are good friends and plays well with what seems to be half of the Phillys forwards in recent history.

    @king lopez, I meant to type Ex-Philly Forwards.

    CabbagesAndKings Reply:

    @king lopez, Of course we should “go after” him.

    But as others suggest, only if we can get him at a fair price. He has two seasons left on a 7m a year contract — which as always will be 30 goals each year.

    We should not overpay for him.

    The real question is, what would a fair trade for Iginla consist of…?

    [Reply]

    DEH Reply:

    @king lopez, well he’s 34, still has one more contract in him, but he carries a 7 mil cap hit. His contract expires after next season and assuming he would resign with us we would be able to drastically lower the hit by front loading the deal. Unfortunately for us that’s the same year that Quick’s contract expires and who knows what kinda raise he will get. I can see both sides of the argument, but I would say no. We have the pieces we need and I don’t think it would be worth the potential we would have to give up to get him.

    @king lopez, I would be ok with either scenario below to get Iginla:

    1. JW, Martinez and a second round pick.

    2. A prospect, Martinez, and 2 second round draft picks.

    @jess, He has always been a pretty clean hitter. Don’t know why he has gotten away from the strongest part of his game. Shanny hammer? But still. You have to play your game. Note to sutter: brown, play your game…hit somebody

    With Stoll and Penner both playing much better hockey of late, I’m interested to see what that 3rd line can do tonight. Should be fun to see what a little infusion of energy and one Mike Richards can do for a team.

    @California Royalty, It’s amazing that the lines he put together are the lines that seem so obvious to a large degree, yet TM wouldn’t do it. No Ethan M. or Hunter. I know that EM is gone, but he wouldn’t have been on the ice under Sutter anyway by this logic.

    I’m pumped. . .

  14. California Royalty says:

    Anyone else feel like Martinez kind of got the shaft? All he did was get injured and is now out of a spot. I get since he’s been back, he hasn’t been the same player that earned him the spot to begin with, but I’d like to see more of him. Maybe sit Scuderi or Greene against a faster team?

    [Reply]

    California Royalty Reply:

    @California Royalty, Then again, Scuderi and Greene are Sutter’s kind of players so…

    Kings x Reply:

    @California Royalty, Maybe so but I would rather have voynov in there instead of martinez. The thing that matters is that we have the depth to even have this arguement.

    I like the lines…seems like 3 scoring lines. There is speed and grit spread throughout.

    However, I would prefer DB on the left.

    And, picking nits, JW on line 2 and TL on line 3. I just don’t get why the Philly line has not been thrown together at least just to see what it has.
