What type of a first impression will the Kings make on new coach Darryl Sutter? All of tonight’s action will be on Fox Sports West and on 1150-AM and affiliates, with all the game updates here as well…
OVERTIME
In goal: It’s still Quick against Hiller.
SHOOTOUT
Kings: Stoll, GOAL.
Ducks: Perry, GOAL.
Kings: Kopitar, wide.
Ducks: Selanne, save.
Kings: Brown, GOAL.
Ducks: Palmieri, save.
THIRD PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick against Hiller.
Kings 2, Ducks 1: The Kings took the lead 8:02 into the third period. Anze Kopitar carried the puck into the Ducks’ zone with speed, then dropped a pass for Dustin Brown. Brown didn’t hesitate, and whipped a long-range, high shot past Hiller. Drew Doughty picked up his second assist of the game.
Kings 2, Ducks 2: The Ducks tied the game with 3:11 remaining in regulation. Lubomir Visnovsky held the puck near the blue line and pulled it far right, then fired a shot that beat Quick through traffic. Niklas Hagman and Toni Lydman got assists.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Ducks 33-20 in regulation.
SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick against Hiller.
Ducks 1, Kings 0: After the Kings did next to nothing with two second-period power plays, the Ducks took the lead with 6:05 remaining. Lubomir Visnovsky wound up from the blue line and Niklas Hagman, parked to the left of the net, deflected Visnovsky’s shot past Quick from close range. Luca Sbisa also got an assist.
Kings 1, Ducks 1: The Kings tied the game with 3:43 remaining in the second period. Mike Richards won an offensive-zone faceoff, then went to the inside of the left circle. Drew Doughty shot from the left point, and Richards deflected the puck down and past Hiller for his team-high 12th goal of the season.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Ducks 12-6 in the period, went 0-for-2 on the power play and did not face a penalty kill. The Kings will be on the power play for the first 1:41 of the third period.
FIRST PERIOD
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Jonathan Quick against the Ducks’ Jonas Hiller.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Ducks 13-9, even though they had to kill two penalties and didn’t have a power play. Hiller made two strong glove saves on shots by Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar.

Darryl Sutter. 1-0 record as LA Kings head coach. GOOD JOB, COACH(Es); PLAYERS. Undefeated! Go figure.. Let’s see 20 games from now.. I’m prognosticating, 8-8-4=20 on the low; 15-4-1=31 on the high. Both CAN happen. (the low doesn’t make a playoff team)
PRIDE=PASSION=POWER [It works, properly, within any 'system'] gKg!

1st Period. No goal
[Reply]
Enjoyed Westgarth sending Hiller sprawling. The right attitude for home ice.
[Reply]
First impressions:
1. Distinct change in entering the OZone – someone driving down Broadway, making a bee-line for the front of the net,
2 Better forechecking, no hesitation, coupled with puck-side DMan pinching half-way down the wall! Wow, how refreshing! (Mitchell did this at least twice in the 1st period),
3 Better break outs with quick passes out of own zone and looking for a diagonal pass through the NZone for a streaking forward. Richardson/ Kopitar almost scored!
4. More aggressiveness all over the ice highlighted by the 4th line up-tempo and energy.
Only negatives I saw was the wearing the “C”. Perry had a point blank shot from the right faceoff dot while DB was picking his nose. They showed DS after that and he looked non-too-pleased. About time this guy gets corrected. I’lll not even rag on him for that dumb give-away to Fowler coming out of the DZone also resulting in a great scoring opportunity for the Ducks.
In summary, I like the new look. Can’t wait to see what adjustments DS makes for the rest of the game.

What’s your take after the first game of the Darryl Suttor Era?
Trying to keep my feet on the ground, but I”m excited with the progress under Stevens and now the wake-up call with the new coach.
We’ll see what “tendencies” take hold that are new and different, but so far I’m encouraged.
Finally, I really don’t see how this team won’t be scoring 3+ goals on a regular basis by mid-January! There gonna get on a good streak (8-1-1, or 7-2-1 over 10 games) and turn this thing around.
GkG!

@tomb, I really dislike the staged fights. I love fighting, but I don’t see the need for those kinds of fights.
I would love to see the NHL adopt a rule saying you only are allowed 5 fights per year. Then you’re suspended 5 games for the next fight, and then 10 games, and so on. That would still allow for fighting when necessary, but gets rid of those staged fights that aren’t needed. With the rise of concussions, and CTE, the NHL needs to do something to curb fighting.

billanthony Reply:

@tomb, I disagree in that Fraser likely sees this as a golden opportunity to impress and earn a secure position on the team. He was a throw-in who the Kings wanted to throw back, now a new coach who lies an “abrasive” game. Sure beats the heck out of that “home” game earlier against the Oilers. No passion. The “pretect the kingdom” rhetoric was as fake that night as the plywood castle. no matter how much rock music gets piped into the building.

Frenetic and intense but I liked the look of the toronto game better. Maybe they settle down a little bit and get that rotation going. try to dictate the play a bit more with that 5 man rotation we heard so much about.
[Reply]
Good 1rst period. Ducks are sending 2 players at the puck carrier in the nutral zone, and the Kings cross ice pass is catching them overloading 1 side. There’s some room, and the Kings are entering the left side of the offensive zone with room to skate.
Also, once they gain possession in the defensive zone, the lateral outlet is connecting well.
[Reply]
one very noticeable difference so far…(its only been one period)…is how the kings are entering the zone with numbers, most of the time with 3…
i think the team needs to be a lil’ more patient with their shot selection…they actually have more time than they think to let the play develop…
also, the cycle was there early on, but disappeared later on…
still…not bad…not great either…

VV got lucky there. The Ducks would’ve had a 3 on 1 had they connected with that pass. VV’s got to know how much time is left when pinching in on the PP.

jess Reply:

@neil,
There are many emotional components in this game for the Ducks too. This is a cross-town rivalry of new coaches and this game means alot for both teams. So while the ducks may be a bad team in stats this season, they are going to play above their level tonight for sure and it makes for a good battle, but me thinks we will prevail.

-Kopi needs strength on his line, look Ducks have moved Parros up to next line………………..get Westie or Cliffie up there
-Doughty needs to not over due it, just do your job Drew and move the damn puck kid
Otherwise some additional compete in all other players

Thought it was a good game. Still not getting bounces and MR could of had a hat trick tonight.
Penner disappeared into crap-dom again and Gagne looked lost at times.
JJ and DD… man.
But here is my big take away from the game – Lubo’s goal. That’s the key for us and we simply need to replicate what he does with his back-swing. He doesn’t load it all the way, he halves it. Every D-man for the Kings goes 120% back and then holds it! That’s why we can’t get a shot on net from the point.
We start skating away from the opposing (like Lubo) and half the back swing, we’ll get more shots on net.
Last thought – I hope Sutter keeps the top two lines as is for a while and let’s them build some chemistry. The bottom two (minus williams) were eh.

Only thing that got to me tonight was the play of Lewis. This kid has all the skills a hockey player can have. He just can’t find the net. Question? Why not plant your ass in front of the net?
I like Lewis I just want to see him do better. Sutter is not going to take not yelling for long. Some of our guys need some ass chewing. Like he said it’s a 3-2 league. Richards was pissed that he missed that up net. Emotion great. VV played good also. Good game, glad we came away with the 2 points. I don’t think I wanted to see the Kings win more than this game here. I would of been broken if they would of lost. We out played the Ducks the whole game. If Lewis dosn’t turn his back and cough up the puck no way does the ducks get the tying goal. And to all you Brown Haters. Where are you now. He has played MVP type hockey the last 2 games. Kee[ing it up will be difficult, but he sure is a joy to watch.

So JWTFJ might be a better acronym to sum up our beloved Jack — clueless, disconnected, out-of-position, utterly lost in his own zone, wandering about, on frolics of his own, and just plain old-fashioned not very smart.

@King Charles of Salt Lake, I don’t believe anybody ‘Hates’ Brown; I called it like it was. He wasn’t a ‘Captain’ on the ice and lately he has stepped-up his presence on the ice, no doubt.
I watch a lot of NHL Hockey (Something Kings’ Fans don’t seem to do) and I see how other Captains play, and lead their respective Teams; Brown wasn’t even close to these guys…However, tonight he showed that leadership quality and he needs to continue that leadership for this Team to improve.
