The view from Toronto

Toronto fans were upset — and, according to video replays — that Drew Doughty was not whistled for being offside on the play that led to Dustin Brown’s second-period goal. Maple Leafs fans might hold onto that for a while. There’s a segment of them that still hasn’t gotten beyond Kerry Fraser’s no-call in the Campbell Conference Finals in 1993… The Kings and Maple Leafs staged an all-around well-played game last night. Here’s a sampling of how the Toronto media covered it, with game stories from the Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and Globe and Mail, plus a bonus item, a really nice blog item/game coverage from longtime Toronto radio and print reporter Howard Berger…

Maple Leafs fall to Kings in shootout (Toronto Star)

Leafs lose to Kings in shootout (Toronto Sun)

Kings hand Leafs third straight loss (Globe and Mail)

Once again, Leafs are gracious hosts (Berger Bites)

Hey Rich, it feels like the first sentence is missing a “perhaps rightfully so” or something after “video replays.”

Thanks for all your hard work! I’m always amazed at how quickly you get these things up!

I feel their pain. Bad officials working on the “Toronto Agenda” giveth amd sometimes taketh away. I guess mext season they will create a new “Doughty” rule allowing the video review of on-side calls directly preceding any goal scored by the Kings.

@DesertKing, The closer I watch the NHL the more I realize there is not so much biased around teams, but Canadian players in general. The whole Crosby thing is completely out of control and how Doughty can still be considered a elite defenseman is beyond me. Doughty is very good, but certinaly not great … at least not yet.

@KC23, I go back and forth on the greatness of Doughty. He certainly didn’t look out of place in the Olympics gold medal game, and he was there for the most pressure.

    @DesertKing,

    Oh please no!

The Kings already get shafted enough with all reviews.

I just checked the dictionary and Toronto video review means disallow any Kings’ goal.

I miss Kerry Frasier’s hair! lol — Penner has looked good the last couple of games. If he’s waking up things may be headed in the right direction.

Doughty was ON! He should play every game at home (where he’s from).

Not really all that jacked about the new coach, but I must say I can’t wait to watch Richards play some more. Love watching that guy play.

if you tilt the ice down towards Toronto’s goal at a 45%, then it Technically was not offsides! GO KINGS!

I’d be griped after that bad call too, but really, we’re talking about something that didn’t happen near the end of the game, and was by a couple of inches. There are lots of ways to get screwed, and that was about the mildest. I mean–it was hardly a “tuck rule” call. As we know from times past (and no so past) when your team sucks, the officials seem to make the difference in a lot of games.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, I just put it against all the times Toronto replay war room has screwed us and we still deserve a whole lot more calls coming our way to come close to being even. I don’t feel bad about it one bit.

Would they have complained if the “high sticking” call on Dustin Brown’s follow though shot led to a goal during their power play? Or did they forget the call that favored them?

  9. Stuart says:

I’m surprised that Mike Murphy didn’t call down and have the off ice official blow the play dead from between the sin bin.

@Stuart, Oh he would if he could. That linesman is probably putting his resume together as we speak.

I’m so glad I don’t live in Toronto.

The poll on the Globe and Mail story page is “Did the Montreal Canadiens make the right decision in hiring anglophone Randy Cunneyworth as head coach?”

    [Reply]

    California Royalty Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, It’s because every coach that coaches Montreal, speaks French. Something that the people of Montreal are passionate about. This guy can’t speak a word of French.

I know you’re wondering, why does he have to speak French? It’s just one of the things about Montreal.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@California Royalty, Yeah, I could have reflected that I’m even more glad I don’t live in Montreal. Is it still illegal to put signs on your business in english there?

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

I should explain that I’ve spent plenty of time in LA neighborhoods where there were more signs in foreign languages than english, and while I think it’s short-sighted for them to conduct business in only one foreign language, I wouldn’t think of trying to force them not to.

    California Royalty Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, No no, pretty much everywhere has signs in French and English. Predominantly in French though.
But pretty much all of Canada (Or at least in Ontario) has English signs, with smaller French font

    BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

…You mean, the same way it’s illegal to put signs in anything but English in selected regions of the U.S.?

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Bako – I know of nowhere that’s the case, and I’m completely against it.

    PRMan Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, The worst part is that the law says that in English Canada, all signs must be in English and French. But in French Canada, there’s no corresponding rule. Same with the TV. English stations must provide French on SAP, but RDS doesn’t have to.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@PRMan – I think it would be novel if the government just let the market decide what it wants to see on TV.

    Steve W Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, What I don’t understand, is why was he hired as an assistant coach if he didn’t know French? I would think that all the coaching staff should know how to speak the language.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Steve W, In context, it sounds like people would have wanted the coach to be able to speak French, so I think that’s the most understandable point.

    petemagoop Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, the controversy is that he can’t converse to the French media in French, has nothing to do with signage

I love the view from Toronto!

Also in your post-game stats list that you always do, it’s pretty amazing what the Kings record continues to be these past years in games that Mitchell plays versus those he misses. Despite goal scoring being our problem, his injury closely mirrors our (hopefully past) losing streak

Well, there it is! ;-) Toronto fans say that NHL officials favor sunbelt teams in order to get hockey more popular there. The officials have it in for Toronto and other Canadian teams. It’s obvious: all the calls go against the Leafs.

On the other hand, Kings fans say that we get screwed every time there is a replay. The officials have to favor Canadian teams. But in Toronto, where hockey is king, the thought will always be that L.A.’s been favored!

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@King John, Replay doesn’t favor Canadian teams, Mike Murphy has it out for the Kings regardless who they play.

I would contend that there are a few of these people in the Toronto War Room. It seems as though every call that goes to those guys is against the Kings. I’d have to go back to 01′ against Detroit when the puck questionably went across the line and it was in the Kings favor. Twice it happened last year and its happened twice this year. I’m sure that one of you Insiders has a better recollection than I do, and can generate some stats on the for and against rulings.

    Sorry folks… had to vent
