The Key Three (Dec. 17)

The Kings didn’t score, they didn’t defend well and, for long stretches of the game, they weren’t even moving their feet well enough to keep up with the Detroit Red Wings. Not surprisingly, that led to a blowout loss. The Kings had not allowed eight goals in a game since the Marc Crawford coaching era. What was the key aspect of the Kings’ loss to Detroit last night? I’ve presented three options, and you can vote for your choice as well…

Apparently the Kings have a bad roster with terrible heartless players and TM’s system has covered that up for 2 months. Maybe they should bring Murray back and fire Lombardi that put this sad group on the ice. Hunter, Moreau, were awesome Free agent pick ups. Not to mention DL held out all of training camp and said he wouldn’t pay DD that much only to fold just in time for the 1st game. If he was going to pay him why didn’t he just pay him over the summer and get him in camp. DL is only good trait has been not doing anything and I have noticed that when he does do something its always a bad move. Except for the Richards trade. 1 for 5 years is pretty good. Come on Leiweke get rid of this guy.

@Dan, Where is your pharmacy, I want some of your RX! This franchise was in shambles before DL got here. This team is in a good position for a strong future (including the rest of this season). Many of the pundits had this team going deep into the playoffs with some picking the Kings to win it all.

The Kings underachieving no doubt. Last night was a horrible display of passion and hockey. The Kings should be ashamed of what happened but this in no way shape or form is the end of the road. I am willing to wait see what a coach that demands accountability and is not afraid to get in the face of the players can do with this bunch.

From the sounds of your posts over the last few days…it seems to me you should follow a team you actually like, that has a better GM, better players and a coach you approve of. All you do is complain! You must live an incredibly sorry existence!

@Cry Baby, If the Kings are in such a good position for the future where are the forwards that they recall to score some goals. They had absolutely no depth in the minors otherwise Hunter and Moreau wouldn’t not have been signed. Where are the reinforcements? Hickey’s a bust, Schenn got traded, Moller bailed, and the only good forwards we drafted were let go by DL and now are scoring for the Islanders, Rangers, and Lightning.

I am really hoping that this is rock bottom for the Kings. Watching last nights game was frustrating. We would get the puck in our zone, skate to the redline and dump it to their d. There is no structure to the offense anymore. Look at the good teams like Boston and Detroit. If they don’t have a play right away, they kick it back to their D and regroup with 5 guys. On the defensive side, watching Zetterberg shake two guys before roofing a backhand was so frustrating. I am sure the guys are working hard, but I don’t necessarily think that they are working smart. There is a lot of time left and thank god we are only a few points out of a playoff spot. Excited to see what Sutter brings.

    - Penner is starting to play well. He mentioned in Rich’s injury before that his hand injury was a blessing in disguise because it enabled his lower body injury to further heal. I think what we were seeing earler in the season was judging a player who was hiding how bad his injuries were affecting him

    - For all the people who say that DM is guity for assembling a bad team, etc etc etc, where were you in October when everyone was giddy with excitment? I can understand that TM had to go because you couldn’t fire the team, but don’t also chase out the guy who has given us more of a farm system and pieces than we’ve had in a long time (and no, weak slanders at AEG doesn’t cut it either… they been willing to open the pocket book when need be)

    - Yeah this team is going through a very bad patch right now but aside from last ngiht’s game, the problem seems rather fixable (i.e. not having all of our players in terrible slumps). It just might be the right recipe for new couch to have the pieces to mold together.

    [Reply]

    DEH Reply:

@Chucker, agreed, the incentives were wrong. Players that played well were sent down or benched while players who under performed were still in the line up. This brings DL’s point on accountability, which is a big reason why he brought in Sutter. Unlike a lot of people on this forum, I’m somewhat optimistic about Sutter. TM ran a good game but his downfall came when he lost the ability to motivate his players, just look at Kopitar’s interviews. Sutter runs a slightly more balanced system and is known for his ability to motivate. All we need as far as coaching is an offensive assistant coach to run the PP, Kompon can stay but in a role which suits his strengths (strength/conditioning coach).

    Kingsfanone Reply:

    @Chucker,

Or more that it gave the team a reason to stop listening, and more importantly to stop believing in Terry Murray and the message he was trying to get across.

You believe in someone, until that person does something to totally alienate you. From that moment onward, your view of that person is forever changed.

That’s what sitting Quick did. Maybe Murray’s reason did it. Because he promised to use Bernier the next game. Pretty dumb reasoning, but a worse excuse. No wonder they stopped listening or caring.

Yesterday’s game? Just a residual effect. There’s no leader there now, either a coach or player. Of course the rout was going to happen. It was primed to happen, so it did.

They need a leader. Now. There’s obviously none of the players doing any leading. That’s why they are where they are. Lack of leadership.

Yeah i think so too, i just think it gets too negative here sometimes and we need to take a step back.

Also all the people who troll these boards and say “Sutter is terrible… ask me, I know hockey because I’ve been following it since 1884″ need to chill out. Put me in the bucket of people who don’t know enough about him to make an opinion – I’ll make a judgement after he gets 10 games under his belt. I’m sure there were lots of St. Louis Blues fans who were horrified that ex- Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock was hired to be their savior (when the Jackets have really looked terrible in recent years)…. well look at the Blues now, they’re cruising.

With the exception of a few young coaches, all coaches are people who have been fired before and will be fired again… saying a guy is “just terrible,” no matter who he is, assumes that we know more about coaches, management, & personal from our vantage point (what we hear others says about him) versus the guys who interact with them directly. I’m not saying we’re not entitled to harsh opinions, that’s always good and healthy, but let’s form them from context specific facts.

Also the random article saying Sutter is a terrible pick for us…well that may be true, but don’t forget a lot of them originate from Canadian writers/papers and they’re job is to be perpetually negative about everything (otherwise there would be no reason to employ 20 hockey writers for a paper if no one had unique “take” on things)

Stevens and his twin bafoon can be excused now. How do you sit there, expressionless, during a complete collapse and not make even a semi-coherint attempt to stop the bleeding? No one knows for sure yet if Sutter is the answer but I’m pretty sure of one thing: Stevens and Kompon should be passing out towels and hosing off the Zamboni in Manchester IF they can demonstrate they’re qualified to do so.

Need to go back to the basics. Like basic shooting, passing, and skating drills. It’s gutwrenching to see the Kings miss so many open nets, so many passes, and fall down so much compared to other teams. And then work on positioning, stop rugby team scrumming in front of the net…gotta get that stuff out of their heads.

    [Reply]

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

@Chucker, I agree. Why do the Kings look so fundamentally challenged this year? I don’t think I have ever seen a team less capable of passing the puck. The Wings could pass it around all period if they wanted to but the first pass we make is usually mishandled and if not the first, ALWAYS the second. It’s no wider we dump and chase and shoot from the blue line on our miserable power play. I know they can’t be that bad but they look like a team that never even practices. System aside, their fundamentals are awful and if you can’t even pas the puck a couple times w/o turning it over or fumbling it into the boards for another scrum, how can you EVER get anything going offensively or even clear the zone defensively for that matter?

@jonsey, To the players it seems that everything that can go wrong has. See the pinball goal in the Blue Jackets game, Richards injury coupled with 5 min of penalties on the same play, Willie’s injury, Dallas loss, and loss to the Ducks. It seems that every rebound is just 2 inches from the stick of a player with a open net shot. There is a sense of despair in the locker room. Sutter should’ve called them right after the game to inform them that he will be in the locker room in Toronto when they arrive to hold his first team meeting. When so many lucky thing happen for the other team you tend to lose hope, which drains you emotionally. Listening to player interviews I sense a consensus “WTF.”

His system sucks, we need to open things up,etc.etc. Guess the system wasn’t so bad after all. Instead of getting 8-2 it would alittle easier to take 3-2, or 2-1. Not that losing is fun but I think my point was made. Now everyone wants Dean Lombardi fired. If and when that happens, and I hope it doesn’t, then what???? I said last week when TM got fired, it was more than just a coach or G.M. problem. This team has an enigma in the room and nobody wants to admit it. But until that enigma is gone this team isn’t going to get better, plain and simple. So I truly hope everybody here is happy. You all got what you wished for. @P90X, Many on this forum will disagree with the following statement:
TM’s downfall was deviating from his game plan! He tried desperately to get his players to score more goals. By doing so the game sped up. Under TM the team did best when they were able to slow the game down and control the puck. In a fit of desperation, he told his players to shoot blindly and pray for a good bounce. In doing so the team got away from controlling the puck and making sound passes to set up players in front of the net before taking shots. Actually, the first thing the team needs to do is spend a whole practice on passing drills. Most if not all of Detroit’s goals came because of turnovers on bad passes. Let’s face it, TM tried to change who he was and the players didn’t buy it.

    [Reply]

    Pesus Reply:

    @P90X,
I wanted TM gone because I felt we couldnt beat good teams or go deep in the playoffs playing this style. Stevens hasnt changed the sytem, so we continue to suck. The only differece last night was our goaltending was terrible. If Quick played like himself it would of been another 3-2 loss. I wanted TM gone so DL would bring in a coach with some fire and some ideas on how to improve the offence and PP, something TM couldnt do and that cost him his job. You thought Stevens would change that?
Im keeping my fingers crossed, hoping Sutter can.

I never liked the Richards trade from the beginning. Yes, he’s great, but they didn’t even give Schenn a chance. Instead they play Clifford. Another Mr. Grinder. Horrible. They had all this young talent and traded it away. Now Richards could be like Crosby or Deadmarsh. Imagine if Purcell, Moulson, Boyle, Camillieri, etc. were still around. Along with the good D. AEG is proving time and again they make poor decisions in bringing in hockey management. Witness the latest DL coaching blunder: Sutter. Unfortunately, those stands at Staples are going to be showing a lot of empty seats.

The Richards trade was one of the better moves DL has ever made. Can’t blame him for the concussion. Schenn is hurt too. Richards has many great years left and a good contract, and he is exactly the kind of player we’ve needed. No question that was a solid move from DL.

@Poorman, I don’t even understand why you are a Kings fan. They seem to make you miserable. Whereas you look at everything in hindsight and then criticize everything that doesn’t turn out well, DL has to make moves based upon the player’s history to date and doesn’t have the benefit of hindsight. I mean, c’mon you still think Bernier is better than Quick? Really? How good a judge of talent are you?

i can’t wait for darryl… i know many here aren’t as happy as i about his arrival (and i wasn’t even that excited until i watched last night’s debacle), but i think we’re seeing that it’s less about the systems that were so quick to be blamed and used as the fodder to fire TM (at least by fans), but instead it’s a lack of character, heart, discipline, responsibility, accountability, etc. by this group of players… if there’s one thing that can be said about sutter, it’s that his teams certainly don’t lack those attributes… TM did a great job with the X’s and O’s, and that developed this team wonderfully over the last 2 seasons, but a hard-nosed motivating disciplinarian he was not… now the organization is at a point where developing is over, winning is the expectation (we spent too much time developing talent over the years, and too much money acquiring top talent over the off season to not expect that)… i don’t buy the statement that we don’t have the talent that we thought we did, we just don’t have the talent we thought we did maximizing their potential (heck, we’re not even scratching the surface)… this may get a few boooo’s from fellow bloggers, but i would like sutter to come in and make an example in his first game by healthy scratching dustin brown… and then i’d like him to move right down the line and healthy scratch drew doughty, justin williams, and so on and so forth (to have been playing the healthy scratch game all season with richardson, lewis, etc. because of a perceived lack of performance by those guys is over looking and giving the obvious culprits a free pass, when in theory those are the guys that should be leading and producing the most… it’s about accountability)… i’d even like him to look at potentially moving C’s and A’s around too (just as TM could only take us so far before the team developed around him into something that needed more than teaching, i too think the same can be said about dustin brown’s tenure as captain… he was a great quiet leader for this team as it developed from a basement dweller to a playoff contender, but the team has now developed into something more than needing a quiet leader, this team now needs a true captain… first game back, richards should have the C)… i hope that darryl sutter comes in with the biggest can of whoop ass any NHL team has ever seen, i hope he makes mike keenan look like a choir boy… i still have faith in this team, and i still think this season is far from over, and that’s why i think that tough times call for tough measures… darryl sutter, welcome to LA. good luck.

It comes down to this, 7 of the 8 Red Wings goals were from the low or high slot, and almost on every rush they have one player going to the low slot and another going to the high slot. Watch the replay. This is totally different from how the Kings play. If the Kings go to the slot, and that’s IF they go, the Kings place him right on top of the goalie, trying to either screen him or jam the puck in when it falls below him. Guess what, goalie’s are aware of that. They now have the quickness to move around the screen, or use the screen to take up part of the open net area and play off that. And as far as stopping a puck that’s right in front of their pads, dahhhhhhhhhh, just spread out as much as possible. I’m also tired of Bob and Jim throwing out the fact that we have more shots on goal than the other team. Is that a great accomplisment? Let’s count quality shots!!! Kings out shot Detroit 10-9 in the first period, and I remember two of the Kings “shots” were thrown in for a line change from center ice that Howard had to stop before it “rolled” into the goal. So this is such a bogus stat. Frustrating…………we need a new system where the “slot” is utilized, and QUALITY shots are taken!!!!!

    [Reply]

    Chucker Reply:

@gary, I agree. Shots on goal is such an overrated stat…all it means is how many times you hit the opposing goalie with the puck. The object of shooting is to not hit the goalie, it’s to hit the back of the net for goals. Scoring mentality > Shooting mentality

    [Reply]

    Steve W Reply:

Dean Lombardi is the worst general manager in hockey. He gave up a fortune to Drew Doughty who isn’t worth half of what he got. That alone should have got him fired. Now the Kings have to go back to the drawing board and figure out what players have to be replaced. There is no way this team with its current players will make the playoffs. Their goal tending has become very shakey. You can’t win with inconsistant goalies. They gave up super star money to two guys that are not worth it. Namely Kopitar and Doughty. They could of had six decent players for the amount of money they gave those two. I rather see Andreoff and Toffoli playing with the Kings then a couple of the vets they have.

Been saying it for a long time….cycling in the slot. Beautiful rotations constantly going on almost like there are no forwards or dmen they all constantly rotate going down the slot. this team has no strategic vision. OK well I guess hey do but it is highly ineffective in todays

I won’t be watching any games for awile. Too boring and painful. Sutter will have no downside risk here. Can’t get any worse than we are now.
