Thursday skate update

Slava Voynov will come out of the Kings’ lineup tonight, to be replaced by Alec Martinez. John Stevens was not pleased with Voynov’s game at Boston and said he wanted to give Voynov a chance to “reset.” Also, on the third line, Trevor Lewis will be in instead of Trent Hunter.

Stevens said there is a possibility that Mike Richards might join the team in Detroit or Toronto but Richards would be unlikely to play.

Dean Lombardi spoke briefly about the coaching situation but didn’t offer much of an update, other than to say that the Kings were “closer” in the process. More on this, and other notes and quotes, to come…

When you read what he says he sounds good. Very clear and aware. I think if he lost the glasses, like in the big interviews, he would look more like a head coach.

Anyway, I mentioned Stevens as a possible replacement IF they relieved TM 2 weeks ago and nobody bought it. Of course very few had suggestions.

@Eric, Also, According to a report by Helene Elliot on NHL Network, DL started with three guys, narrowed to two, and as of right now, have not made an offer. If this is the case then it is very possible Stevens is getting a look. Or the ownership doesn’t like the choices and wants to look more.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@Sebastian, so the brain trust thinks DD2 is better than VV?? if so, more house cleaning is def in order!! DD2 was his normal slow self, and very hesitant with the puck in his own zone. Looked stapled to the ice most of the game. Sure VV took a couple of penalties (the interference one might as well be called a Greene instead of interference) and that trip was unfortunate, but his positioning was more to blame IMO. The entire team was overwhelmed in the last game, I just can’t see VV sitting, especially tonight where he might have been able to score a couple against a languishing jackets team…

    [Reply]

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

@Stuart, Just my opinion but I don’t think they think DD2 is better or that the move is particulary punitive. They’re developing a very young defenseman who has shown tremendous potential but had an off night at Boston. This is Stevens coaching a young defenseman and considering the position he’s in, I think it’s a pretty bold move.

    Stuart Reply:

@40Year, I just hope it works out and DD2 does not get exposed… I don’t know if any game against COL has been as big as this one. 2 points tonight would be like 200 for the boys.

@Lake Forest, Agree 100% Martinez has speed and is good with the puck, two assets in major need, whether it be from a forward or D Man. Hunter has had 2-3 chances in the Top 6 and has done nothing with them, he wouldn’t even be dressing for most teams. Bottom line, it should be contribute or sit. And that should include J Williams.

I agree with you, but, if you sit the guys who don’t produce there are so many of them that you’ll end up playing one of the other guys who aren’t producing.

If you cut a guy like Hunter, which is fine, who do you replace him with? Which of the AHL guys is ready to step up right now? Lotki was the best of the AHL forwards and he doesn’t look great up in the NHL yet.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Lake Forest, That’s one of the was Murray disappointed me. There should have been some time in the last few seasons, during the losing streaks, when he went around the room, round robbin, and benched one player after another, starting with the ones giving the least consistently good effort.

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

Absolutely agree 100%. That probably was the core of his problems. No accountability if you are slumping. It’s a long season. Sitting a “regular” out a game or two to gain perspective goes along way.

  11. LA_1968 says:

I guess it’s really Martinez replacing Voynov. I can see that. But Drewiskie was pretty shaky last game. More than Voynov or anyone. I guess Stevens really feels that Martinez deserves his spot back and DD2 deserves a longer look. More of a team/group building thing.

  12. Weasel says:

Oh come on now – a couple of posts make it sound like Hinter is a huge problem. Seriously?

Hunter 4 pts in 18 games with a -1 plus/minus – just how many points were you expecting from this guy?

    Penner 5 in 19 (-3)
    Clifford 4 in 30 (-4)
    Loktionov 2 in 13 (-4)
    Westgarth 2 in 14 (-2)
    Richardson 2 in 21 (-6)
    Fraser 1 in 15 (0)
    Lewis 1 in 20 (0)

Don’t get me wrong Hunter hasn’t done much for the team, but he seriously isn’t the type of player at this point that can change the game. He’s just a role player who is supposed to be able to finish if given the puck in the right situations.

In hindsight – we should have kept Zues as a 4th liner (assuming he would take le$$).

Also, I wonder if Stolly’s bad play is attributed to being sent down to the 3rd line.
I know he is at 2C now, but man, he played like a beast last year compared to this year.

Lastly, I feel like only two players on this team are legitimate first liners: Kopi and MR.
Unfortunatly they are both centers of course, but the fact that we made such a hard push for B. Richards in the offseason speaks volumes: we basically do not have enough playmakers or finishers. It’s been 5 years and we still have too many grinders/energy/role players. What’s worse is that our bottom six lacks true chemistry. Putting guys like Hunter in the 1st line is toxic as it hinders bottom 6 chemistry building and sends the wrong message that anyone for any reason can play up top.

  23. Weasel says:

Hey guys, it’s no big deal on VV. He’s good but he’s not established. Sitting him for one game will motivate and benefit him. Stevens “reset” comment makes perfect sense. Studies have shown that the atheletes brains learn from both experience and rest. Kind of a cool thing actually. The brain seems to hold the lesson from activity until it has a chance to rest (sleep is key) and they it incorporates the activity experience so the next time a similar situation comes up the athlete just reacts without having to think about.

Getting or having to watch a game will allow VV to see what he’s been being asked to do on the ice and that also helps him learn.

Besides at this point, rotating the players a bit to find some magic is a reasonable gamble.

The team is in a bit of turmoil right now. DL probably waited to long to pull the trigger on Murray and management forced his hand leading to this. But now it really is in the players’ hands. I watched 24/7 last night and Laviolette said something that rang true and that every King needs to hear. He made the point that any team can have all the skill in the world, but if you play without passion your chances of going anywhere in this league are nil. These guys need to find a way individually to get fired up and come together as a group. I think we all saw flashes of this from certain guys against the Bruins and we need more from each guy on the ice. We can’t live in the past any longer and it is time to move on.

The guys with the letters on their jerseys need to call a team meeting. They need to stand in front of that room and say that they haven’t been great but going forward, they will bust their a$$ for the team and ask the same from every one of them. If they can’t do that and get this team going the right direction then it is time for new leaders. My votes would be Richards (C), Mitchell(A), Scuderi (A). The three of them have different personalities, but each one of them plays hard on a consistent basis and will have the ability to call people out that are underperforming.

    [Reply]

  26. funky says:

Like the Stevens approach so far:

    1) loosen up the room – exactly what the team needs at this point. Murray seemed respected by the players. When listening to the players and reading their quotes it’s almost like he was a father figure and no one wants to disappoint Dad, so loosening up the enviroment and getting back to the basics is a great thing.

    2) Voynov is a rookie and a lot can be learned from stepping back and learning by watching. We do this with new cops on the street even if they are functioning at a high level. Learning curves are steep and sometimes a step back approach is warranted. It also allows Martinez and DD2 playing time. DD2 still is shaking off the dust from a prolonged sitting, and Martinez is just getting back. These two will be the 2 moved in a trade so having them play and get to a point were scouts are impressed is a good thing

    3) this team has talent in the major weakspots. We have AllStar goaltending, 2 outstanding young Dman with more coming and a 1/2 punch at center that very few teams have. Our wingers are not as bad as people think, just put in spots that may be above their pay grade. Brown is an ideal 2nd winger in this league, we are lucky to have him. Gagne has shown his worth and he too is solid. In the current NHL a 2nd line of Richards – Gagne – Brown is considered well above average. One of Williams or Penner is good enough as shotgun to Kopitar if Lombardi lands us a true 1st line Winger.

    4) Matt Greene is a huge problem in my eyes, he is old school NHL and not skilled enough to produce anything other then some leadership and lots of penalties. Upgrade him and we have the best defence in the NHL by next season.

    5) Hunter is a bottom pairing winger put wrongly on the PP. He is not our problem, he is a role player who is actually getting better. The dude is coming of major surgery(think Handzus his 1st year)

    6) Kompon must go in a new coaching system

    7) Mike Richards needs the C, just let Brown play

    8) this is a team with young kids, let them play with emotion, sometimes it will bite us in the butt but for most times unbridaled emotion brings out the beasts and the natural skill and thinking. T.M stifled this, his concrete face alone showed his true colors and that over time made the team stale and robotic.

    9) paging Mr Clifford, brass up the pair and get back to work or Manchester will be calling

    10) Loktionov needs to sit and watch a few games. With AK and MR I think he will be moved. I like the kid, but he has no place to succeed in this line-up.

It took TM being fired to get Trevor Lewis back in the lineup.

OK, maybe that’s stretching things a bit, but this is definitely the right move and it just made me like Stevens more. Hopefully we’ll see some benefits tonight.

Sounds like Stevens is making all the right moves in my eyes. His player selection tells me he is paying serious attention to who is producing and who isn’t. Lombardi should carefully consider keeping him around for a month or two. He could make the difference in this team.

Yes, lets bench a guy for one game because of his performance of one game. When does this guys’ tenure end? Martinez has been bad..
