Friday practice; Moreau on waivers

The Kings are on the ice for practice, but without Ethan Moreau, who was placed on waivers this morning. Moreau also did not play in the third period last night. Otherwise, the top two lines are the same and Willie Mitchell is once again a full participant in practice. Moreau’s presumed removal from the roster tomorrow — teams will have until 9 a.m. Pacific time to put in claims — would clear up a roster spot for Mitchell. More updates to come…

I wonder if this isn’t a message to the team as a whole to wake up and start playing with some intensity and urgency from the first drop of the puck. This team needs some real leadership–somebody needs to step up and inspire. It seems like the absence of Richards created a huge vacuum….

@Stuart, This solves the roster problem for Willie BUT who will be the odd man out of our defensemen tomorrow? Voynov? VERY TOUGH CALL if you consider that you can’t lose your job because of injury.

    Brownkingsfan Reply:

@LA_1968, TM has already proved himself a liar with the “going with the hot hand in goal” thing. I wouldn’t put it past him to sit Marty. Voynov is our best defenseman so far this year. Depth is a good but hard problem.

    [Reply]

    LA_1968 Reply:

@Brownkingsfan, Totally agree about Voynov but I wouldn’t call TM a liar. If TM is going to follow the hot hand system then that strongly implies that when the goalie has a bad game he’ll be out. Otherwise how does that other guy ever get in there. It would seem Bernier starts Saturday.

@Stuart, Maybe so. Someone will have to sit. It shouldn’t be Voynov because he scores and play good D. TM has to find the weakest link somehow. Someone will not be happy. Martinez did make that terrible turnover last night when he just had to look around.

Sorry but Moreau has done more then Lewis and Richardson so far. Richardson plays hard every shift but Lewis has been a waste of space for 2 years now. I honestly can’t remember the last time he scored or did anything that made me say I am glad he was a king. Moreau at least hit and got in guys faces, and has at least scored this season. Moreau is a solid veteran guy that the kings lack on offense. It’s about time they did something but they did it with the wrong guy in my opinion.l

    Play2Win Reply:

@Marc Nathan, Marc I’m sure your post was meant at an attempt of humor because Dean Lombardi is the best thing to happen to the Kings in 30+ years. I’ve been following them since the late 70′s and I’ve had to endure some really, really bad teams, coaches, GM’s (yes Dave Taylor you SUCKED as GM) and players. Our team used to have 3rd and 4th liners that had NO business of playing in the NHL. Dean has brought this team to respectability and more importantly accountability. So I really take it personal when someone bashes Dean and what he has brought to the Kings. My advise is to relax, realize it’s a LONG season and hope that the end of the season comes with a Stanley Cup. Also, drink some damn Kool-Aid man and chill!!

    Telos Reply:

@DanFan, It could mean the opposite, to keep Loktionov around as a replacement. It could also mean to keep Voynov around, or it could mean that you are right and they are preparing for when they re-activate Richards :P Who knows… I wouldn’t read into it until the truth comes out.

@kovalking96, he does what he’s allowed to do. Were he allowed to create and ad-lib, he would. He doesn’t cuz he knows he’ll be benched if the slightest thing goes wrong. Theats culture. Were it acceptible, all forwards would be creative. However, the F2 still hesitates, and the F3 is a third defenseman. Thats system/culture issues plain and simple. Can anyone name the last time F3dipped below the offensive face-off dots, trailing by two goals, without SWITCHING with F2?

@Marc Nathan, I’m glad I’m not the only once dissatisfied with Moreau and Hunter’s contribution or lack thereof. Haven’t seen the names of Rosa, Lafayette, Vopat in a long time. Glad to see some REAL LA hockey people. You know the players. I’m sorry to see us giveaway Purcell and Moulson. I think our defensive system is good…the BEST teams (Minnesota, Detroit and Boston) are built on strong D. You need scoring….but the 3rd and 4th lines have to be REAL scrappers–the Conachers, Granatos, Drapers, the pests who keep pestering and shake the puck loose and most importantly know what to do with it, when it springs lose-they bury it. The Kings have NOT have great 3rd/4th line scrappers in awhile. Cliffy is good at that, as is Richardson. They’ll be on the minus side every while, because they may be up against the other teams top line….they come thru. Moreau, HUnter, Westy are “extras” at best. They are as good as any young player without the experience. But I haven’t seen Moreau or Hunter “act veteran”–ie not taking dumb penalties or whiffing on the puck or being out of position or not being able to bury the puck. And why TM had them on the PP on occasion as the second squad is beyond my comprehension! Obviously someone had enough. I don’t think the waiver is to open up a spot for Mitchell–someone else is on their way to the team…and it is likely not from Manchester. There must be a DL deal that is in the works–and room is being made at the inn.

    Harrison Merkin Reply:

@cjms, @all Pens/Brown/Kopi should have been on a line since day one. Throw three big bodies at em then follow with speed and skill in the form of Gagne/Richards/Williams. That’s a top 6 that can give other teams fits. If Kopi can play the way he did last night in the 3rd more consistently that line could do some real damage. We’re not going to be the runaway division winners we all hoped for but we will make the playoffs and when we do we will be a hard to team to play against. Also for all the “system” talk, while I agree that it isn’t currently working nor is it particularly exciting I think it’s interesting to look at The Kings record against the east over TM’s tenure. There is no doubt that we play an east coast style and have had success doing so. I think that bodes well for this team in making a deep run in the playoffs.

Those calling for TM’s job…look no further than across town to the quacks and how much better they are with a new coach. Columbus has a new coach every year….why aren’t they any better.

This is about 20 players being committed to each other and playing as a team. If you’re not going give 110% for 60 minutes every game…this is the result!

We saw this a few years ago when the Kings would fall behind early in games because they weren’t prepared to play at the start. Somehow that disappeared last season and we still have the same players and added a stud in M. Richards. You can just tell their confidence is shot.

Props to Kopi last night for giving it his all…need more of that from him, but he can’t do it all himself!

A nice long road trip with some Kings players dropping the gloves (Clifford and Westy) and playing some ugly hockey to get back on a roll. This team is still in the top on defense and goaltending. Just need a few ugly goals and the bottom 6 forwards to pick it up!

Moral of the story is, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

I’ll stick to my original thought which was he makes it thru the season…but there are pressures from above that may decide a change is necessary.

    tornado12 Reply:

@nykingfan, fair enough! I too think (cautiously optimistic is probably a better word) they will do well on this road trip. If not, then I think DL will be forced to make a move of some sort. As you suggested, usually its just easier to axe the coach.
I havent read any comments on what people think of Carlyle. To me he is the obvious choice, but then again I have to admit, I am not well versed in such things as ‘highly touted coaching prospects’.

Seriously, you have to wonder if Cliffy had an exceptional rookie season (a bit sad to say that…. not like seven goals is exceptional), Lewis has topped out at ….. what (?), six? Hunter still there. Stoll no way to know if he can score again w/o JW and Smyth on the wings.

We’ll see but they have a dang bit of work to do because it’s not just that they’ve barely losing. The play looks stodgy, and totally lacking in either speed or creativity. It’s not as though there are three teams in the nhl who play with speed and creativity. There are like twelve or thirteen that play that way…. minimum. That’s almost half the league. How that is not possible with a team thats up to the cap is totally and completely beyond me.

Will never get tired of saying this, get rid of Lokti. One measly point in how many games? Muscled off the puck every time I see him near it. He was put in the center and even that hasn’t worked. It’s just not going to happen unless he fills out and has a growth spurt. Even Penner’s got more points and I know how much people rag on him.

I bought tickets to watch my Kings. Win or lose, I’ll still be watching. If you can’t handle the ups and downs, I suggest you take up golf or underwater basket weaving. Less disappointment.

    [Reply]

    Hackwoods Reply:

@cjms, I concur. I agree that Moreau was not all that great and took some stupid penalities, but he does add value to a team, as he does not have to play everynight to be an effective 4th line winger playing 8 minutes. He is a guy that can be scratched and switched out when Westy needs to be in the game as the enforcer. He would not get rattled or lose confidence in these situations, whereas guys like Richardson and Lewis, still developing, can be impacted mentally by long absenses as a healthy scratch.

Lokti should have been sent back down, and we do not lose anyone. Lokti is not ready to center the 3rd or 4th line, as that his not his place, nor is wing on any line. He might be effective as a 1st or 2nd line center, but we have those covered (for the most part). He has not showed me much upon his return. Very little do I even notice him. I know he is still young and developing, so let him play more in Manchester and he can be ready when needed down the road.

    @AZ King,

It does not make the most sense to take Voynov out of the lineup.

In fact, it makes zero sense to me!

He’s been one of our best defensemen for several games now.

He is our best quarterback on the PP, he settles things down & gets us set up.

I understand the waiver rules, but if a player (Voynov) outplays another player (Martinez), you need to make adjustments to accomodate keeping that player (Voynov) IN the lineup.

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @Scot,

Okay so what’s you solution? You have less than 24 hours to make something happen. Do you expose DD2 or Martinez to waivers and hope you don’t lose them for nothing. Do you try to pull off a quick trade and probably get a lot less than what you could get if you were a little more patient. Or do you stay the course, keep you options open, and not put yourself in a bad position, even if it means that Voynov needs to spend a few more months in Manchester.

    Harrison Merkin Reply:

@Scot, Slava’s points are the sexy choice but he drives me nuts in his own zone. He tends to get himself in trouble then gives his problem to the nearest forward. I hardly think he’s anywhere near our best defenseman. Get back to the familiar pairings and spot start Slava for Martinez based on the opposition.

    2 cents-

    Scot Reply:

    AZ King,

Voynov needs to spend zero time in Manchester going forward. He belongs in the NHL. I am sure DL has planned ahead, & has options with Martinez (offers from other GMs). Maybe they aren’t great, maybe they are workable. If I had to make a choice, I would sift through my offers for Martinez, & choose the best one. If there isn’t a best one, & they are all terrible offers (like a 5th round pick being the best offer), then I would risk Drewiske on Waivers, with the intention of sending him down. If he gets claimed, he gets claimed. Losing Drewiske is not going to cost the Kings a chance at the Stanley Cup. However, keeping Voynov in the lineup will help the Kings TOWARDS winning the Stanley Cup.

    40YearKingsFan Reply:

@AZ King, You’re right. Eventually they’re going to have to move someone but until then I think Voynov is trhe only logical option to send down which is a shame. He’s been the best surprise of the season, but we can’t just give a talented young D-man away on waivers. Maybe we just carry another D-man?

    [Reply]

    Scot Reply:

    @40YearKingsFan,

Is Davis Drewiske a talented young defenseman? With all due respect to him, he’s not. As I stated to AZ King above, losing Drewiske on waivers would not cost the Kings a chance at winning the Stanley Cup. However, keeping Voynov in the lineup would work towards winning one. He’s a keeper. We don’t need to keep Voynov out of the lineup JUST to keep Drewiske. That’s just silly.

Where are the players only meetings? I think there needs to be some serious arse chewing going on between the players to get an edge back to the team. Clifford looks like someone has taken his manhood and locked it up. What’s up with that?

@KC23, It’s entirely possible that Murray gets axed. Not sure who would replace him though that could really take the team to another level. I’ve liked him, but if things don’t change, it’s certainly one of the options Lombardi has to shake things up a little; the Moreau to waivers notwithstanding.

The thing is, there are stretches in life, relationships, work, etc. that we all have to struggle though and once we get to the other side, it’s been a learning experience for all involved and I feel that’s what this team is going through right now. It’s been frustrating as it seems to just drag on and as much as several posters here want to blame things on Murray, I’d say there’s quite a few more people to blame, but it’s always easier to point the finger at one person.

I said it some time back, but I think there is a leadership problem in that locker room right now – the pink elephant in the room – that no one wants to deal with. until that happens, I don’t see things changing; new coach or not. It’s possible that bringing in all these vets with locker room presence undermined Brown.

@dMan, I wanted to think the same for a long time (just one of those down stretches), but DL hasn’t been the same since Doughty deal went through. Puck73 thinks that perhaps DL’s hand was forced from above on the Doughty deal and I’m starting to think he might be right. Since that deal went down DL seems to have distenced himself from the team in general.

    @Phil,
I agree brown should be on the second line, and I’d even put Penner on the top line. Having Richardson and Lewis on the third line would make me one happy camper however.

Ok. I know I am going to get reamed for saying this, but I kind of liked Moreau – better than Hunter. Moreau is kind of mean out there on the ice. If Kopi’s scoring was consistent, if brown, stoll, williams, penner, gagne, had put up the numbers they were supposed to, If clifford, lewis, richardson, doughty, etc. provided the secondary scoring they were supposed to, then the role players wouldn’t be so pressured to be something they are not. In a seven game series, those gritty, mean players are punishing and help wear down the other team. It’s the guys who aren’t scoring according to their capability who are letting down their teammates – not they other way around.

@Devilmachine, after watching this team play for the first half of this season I couldn’t disagree with you more. For most of this year, it’s been like watching 2 teams. You wake up and pay attention when Richards and Kopi lines are out there and your eyes glaze over when the 3rd and 4th line are out. How often have you seen the 3rd or 4th lines establish any sustained cycling time or offensive pressure? It’s not just that they haven’t managed to score any goals — it’s that they aren’t even able move the puck forward.

The 4th line needs to be generating energy and excitement. They need to be punishing the opposing D, and putting a scare into people, even if it’s just for a couple of minutes a period. Finishing your check on guys who have already moved the puck to the breakout, just doesn’t cut it. The 3rd line needs to be generating scoring chances. The bottom 6, at least under the Murray system, have been invisible. Richards got hurt at the worst possible time, but it has further exposed how thin they are in the scoring creativity and puck lugging department. At very least the 3rd and 4th lines need to put pressure and establish possession of the puck, and the Kings bottom 6 just don’t have the ability to do that right now. Something had to change, and if it’s hit rock bottom, you have to look at giving younger guys a chance.

Wow, sad to see Moreau go on waivers man. He has been really physical and a great team guy to have, I hate to see him go down like that after the hard work he’s put in on the ice being a physical player.

    [Reply]

    HockeyOnlyAwaitingModeration Reply:

@Sean, And if he was still here, you’d be griping that DL didn’t waive him. But that is being a good Kings fan as we always ride both sides of the boards.

  66. Dunphy says:

This is unfortunate, great presence in the room and would be a solid guy to have on the bench come playoff time. I wonder what Richardson and Lewis have done to fall so far out of favor given the run they had in the playoffs last year? I understand Lotki is young, but my goodness is he ever soft on the puck! He was put in to provide an upgrade on offense and he really hasn’t done anything.
I’d love to see line combo’s like this: 3 interchangeable 1st/2nd lines
    Gagne-Kopitar-Wiliams (skill, awesome, skill)
    Richardson-Richards-Penner (Speed, smart, net)
    Brown-Lewis-Stoll (Tough, speed, speed)
    Clifford-Fraser-Hunter/West (check)

Roll those top 3 and take Kopitar off the PK – only use him there in crucial situations.

I played in a pickup game one night during the lockout with Ethan. He played on a line with his brother and his Dad. He couldn’t have been more gracious and kind. True gentlemen. Bummer it didn’t work out for him here and hardly his fault. Dean can’t wait until February to make a considerable deal. Good luck Chopper. I hope you land somewhere and play well.

    [Reply]

    Sean Reply:

@K Yerky, Yeah that’s the impression I got from Ethan. He’s always been praised as a great leader and locker room guy, which is what the Kings need at this point. Their frustration is palpable, and seeing him keep going after Bergenheim (and watching Bergenheim cower away from him) after he hit Richards was something not a lot of the Kings are doing right now, sticking up for their players.

    K Yerky Reply:

No one besides young Clifford will stand up right now. Bottom line is this team is too soft. The one thing they can control is to be tough to play against….. And their not.

Wonder if Moreau ends up with Manchester. Sounds from reading they’ve been doing OK but could use some help. I sort of doubt another NHL team would claim Moreau at this point. As far as team leadership, IMO you really have to produce to be a team leader. IME, playing guys with big personalties (or coaches favorites) over more skilled players will kill a team. Better to play some young kid. Don’t know how Moreau is as far as teaching, or if he would produce at the AHL level, but maybe they’d be better off leaving Manchester alone. Mannie has enough grinders on that squad.

Moreau reminded a bit of Gauthier: big strong guy, smart player, a step or two slow for the NHL. Seems like a pretty good guy. Moreau was 14th overall draft pick, many years back.

His waiver is (another) wake up call to the Kings.

Wow shocker! I had my money on whiskey considering Voynov playing so great. This move I understand, but why will DL do when Richards is back? Martinez and whiskey gotta be scared knowing they are next and in my feeling should have been gone this time. O well we need goals, that’s it goals and quick to play not like last night and the team is good. Bye Moreau, Hunter and Penner keep it up. Btw brown and atoll need to put that puck in the net already! Williams was close last night plus he is not 100%, but at least he makes player around him play better.. Brown and Stoll need to step up!

Get real ! Its the regulars that are the problem.

    [Reply]

    K9Jeeper Reply:

@dean, No, the problem is a lack of puck possession, a lack of skill clearing our own zone and an inept coaching staff that doesn’t adjust within a game. If any of my players dumped the puck on the power play, they would ride the bench for a while.

    [Reply]

    HockeyOnlyAwaitingModeration Reply:

@K9Jeeper, Or even on the penalty kill and they have possession nobody within 20 feet and they send it into the other teams zone so they can start their play. Back in the day it was called “Ragging the puck”, you’d hold on until you were going to get some pressure and then dumped it. Kings give the puck up to easy and then it bites them in the butt.
