As noted earlier, Alec Martinez did not practice today, and Terry Murray indicated that Martinez is likely headed to the injured-reserve list. Late in the first period Saturday, Martinez took a big hit from Minnesota’s Warren Peters and went shoulder-first into the glass. Martinez left the game briefly, but returned at the start of the [...]
Martinez likely to IR; Voynov up?
After today’s practice, Terry Murray indicated that Alec Martinez will be out of the lineup for a while and probably will be placed on injured reserve shortly. Murray said that decision is in management’s hands, but that Martinez has experienced swelling and discomfort since the end of Saturday’s game. Murray said Slava Voynov would “probably” [...]
Monday practice update
Alec Martinez is not practicing this morning, but Andrei Loktionov is, on left wing with Mike Richards and Dustin Brown. Hopefully there will be a post-practice update on Martinez, who was checked shoulder-first into the boards late in the first period Saturday but returned for the start of the second period. Here’s how the Kings’ [...]
Loktionov called up
The Kings have called up forward Andrei Loktionov, after Dustin Penner went on injured reserve yesterday. Loktionov is leading the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs with 14 points in 17 games. The Kings are scheduled to practice at 10:30 a.m. today.
Fox gets `flagged’ in nice on-camera moment
In late September, Kings TV analyst Jim Fox completed the naturalization process to become an American citizen, an event documented in this blog post. Jim’s wife, Susie, and his good friend, former Kings player and general manager Dave Taylor, also completed the process recently. There was a nice moment during last night’s broadcast, when Congressman [...]
Murray’s career had a memorable start
Younger fans, or those who simply weren’t following the NHL 21 years ago, might not know the story of how Terry Murray first became an NHL head coach. It came up last night, after Murray coached his 1,000th game. In 1983, shortly after the end of his NHL playing career, Murray was hired as an [...]
Postgame celebration video
Courtesy of KingsVision, it’s the return of the ever-popular Kings postgame win-celebration video. Here’s how it looked on the ice last night…
Penner to injured reserve
The Kings put Dustin Penner on the injured-reserve list today because of his hand injury, meaning he will miss at least the next two games (the injured-reserve listing is retroactive to Nov. 10). There’s no immediate word on whether anyone will be called up from the AHL, although it certainly wouldn’t be surprising, given that [...]
Postgame notes (Nov. 12)
Some notes from last night’s game… – The Kings had their most productive period of the season and rode it to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night at Staples Center. – The Kings scored four second-period goals to blow open a 1-0. It was their first four-goal period since Dec. 27, [...]
The view from Minnesota
As Mike Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune pointed out, last night’s game featured a matchup of the oldest coach in the NHL (Terry Murray, at 61) and the youngest coach (Mike Yeo, at 38). At least for one night, score one for experience. The Kings are now 5-1-1 in their last seven home games against [...]

Murray postgame quotes (Nov. 12)
Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on winning in his 1,000th game as an NHL head coach…) MURRAY: “It doesn’t feel any different, anything special really. It’s a game that was very important for us to win. I really liked the focus coming into this game tonight. The players came out, right away, with the kind of [...]
Brown postgame quotes (Nov. 12)
Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on winning in Terry Murray’s 1,000th game…) “His coaching style suits us very well. He’s not a screamer; he’s not a yeller. When he first got here, we didn’t have much of a system, especially in our D zone. We went to being one of the best defensive teams in the [...]
Game 17: Kings 5, Wild 2 (FINAL)

Kings 5, Wild 1: [...]
Scouting the Wild
Tonight’s game is the first of four meetings this season between the Kings and the Minnesota Wild, who had their five-game winning streak ended with a loss to San Jose on Thursday. The Kings and Wild meet in a matchup of teams ranked 24th and 28th, respectively, in goals per game this season, but the [...]
Kings still adapting to changes?
After yesterday’s practice, Terry Murray talked about the need for improved play coming out of the Kings’ end. Willie Mitchell has also addressed that, noting that system changes put in place turning training camp and still taking hold, and might be contributing to the Kings’ uneven play at the start of this season… MITCHELL: “As [...]
Murray reaches 1,000 games as head coach
Tonight will mark Terry Murray’s 1,000th game as an NHL head coach. Nashville’s Barry Trotz is also coaching his 1,000th game tonight, so Murray and Trotz will become the 20th and 21st coaches, all-time, to reach that number. Murray’s first game as an NHL head coach came on Jan. 16, 1990, when his Washington Capitals [...]
Saturday skate update
Based on this morning’s skate, it appears that Dustin Penner will be scratched, along with Davis Drewiske and Kevin Westgarth. Yesterday, Penner walked around after practice with a large ice bag, and Terry Murray mentioned an upper-body injury but indicated it wasn’t serious. Perhaps it is, although Penner did participate in today’s morning skate. Brad [...]
Penner can’t hang on to points
How rough are things going for Dustin Penner this season? He had a multi-point game…for about 48 hours. Penner initially recorded two assists in Tuesday’s victory over Nashville, but an NHL review showed that he never actually touched the puck on the first one, so that assist was given to Willie Mitchell. That means Penner [...]
Should goalie interference be reviewed?
Should their be more video review in hockey? Specifically, should certain goals be reviewed to determine if they should be disallowed for goalie interference? In various conversations, the suggestion has been put forth by Kings TV analyst Jim Fox, and it became a topic again after last night’s game, when a Vancouver goal was disallowed [...]
