After practice, Terry Murray confirmed that Dustin Penner won’t play tomorrow against Florida. Murray said Penner had not suffered a setback in his recovery from his hand injury, just that Penner was “not quite” ready to return, so the Kings will stay with the same lineup. That includes Jonathan Quick in goal, and Murray said he might look to Jonathan Bernier for Saturday’s game against Montreal. More notes and quotes to come…
Translation: He sucks.

@KingsGuy, In Kings history, against the Habs our record is:
Games 134 Wins 27 Losses 87 Ties 20
That’s our worst against any team. If we sweep them each year (win one game) for the next 60 years we can get back to 500.

@Deke’r, In the Finals? let’s start planning that parade while we’re at it!
To beat the habs the Kings need to be physical, as they are a fast, small team. Brown needs to hit everything that moves. I like Bernier starting that game. He looked awesome in his last game, and I expect he will be up for the Habs (big game for him).

@Canadian King, Agree.
Regarind Bernier, if I was “King for a day” I’d play him against both Florida and Montreal.
He’s been good as of late and giving him 2 games in a row would: 1) give him some continuity and feel more confident, especially if he does well, and 2) give Quick a much-deserved few days off just to let him get away from a rugged first quarter of the season and recharge his batteries.
Doubt TM would do this though…
At this rate, he’s quickly turning Bernier into the next Hedberg.

speaking of the habs… found this interesting w/re to Pacio’s hit on Letang:
“sked if the incident will alter his style, Pacioretty said, ‘I’m going to be completely honest: I’ve been scared to hit people out there.’…” I can bet my life that he’s not alone and that our very own DB feels the same way.
Sad state of the game. I thought the hit in question was partially to blame on Letang. If you go through the middle you will get hit. You pay the price to get the shot away from that position on the ice. His head was lower than it usually is and had he just been skating through without taking the shot, his head wouldn’t have been the target… I don’t like Shanny’s new NHL.

@Stuart,
Hey Stuart. You know what? It’s not the sort of thing I usually comment on (the above) but yesterday even I started thinking about this. You’ve clearly gotta keep players safe. For sure that. Especially the hit to the head stuff. But sometimes they’re getting too conservative now. There was something I saw on tele, a hit to the shoulder and the guy was laying down in that ‘hurt position’ – cause clearly he was hurt. And it was given a penalty. I mean what Torres did to the Chic dman (who partners w Keith) in the playoffs. That Was nasty and dirty. That’s one extreme. But, gadsooks, I mean there has to be a good mean in between the extremes.

@number 6, safety is key, but to what extent do you take things?
Not at you 6, but I’ve heard several old timers talk about how players began to play more recklessly when helmets started to come onto the scene. Prior to that everyone knew/respected that a bad/dirty hit was going to come back on themselves 10fold. I get that Letang was hurt, but he’s a hockey player and a broken nose didn’t stop him from coming back that very game and winning the game for his team.
If hitting is taken out of this game it will cease to be this game. It will be 82 all-star games all season long and I for one would not be a fan.

@Stuart,
Pacioretty moved his weight on his right foot prior to the hit. If he had an intention to make a full body contact to Letang, that should’t be the case. The player who makes the hit is obligated to make full body contact insted of hitting head first. For that reason, Pacioretty’s hit was illegal, and should be punished accordingly.

Stuart Reply:

@goldielocks, straight out of Shanny’s monotone voice in the video’s, yes I saw that too. The weight shift does not explain Letang’s head being where it ended up being. He took a shot which required him to lower his head, from the middle of the ice, a very dangerous place to make a play, and for good reason. as Pac said “I don’t see why I should give him a free pass to come through our zone like that and get a free shot on net.” And he’s right, he shouldn’t.
At the end of the day, it’s a bang bang play but the NHL wants to start looking at “weight shifts” to determine a good from bad hit? I still don’t like it.

@Stuart,
I didn’t take shanahan’s take straight up. And I don’t always agree with Shnahan’s opinion. But in this case, if you look it closely, Pacioretty was trying to sweep the puck away or put the stick on the puck right before the hit. At that moment, he should have known the collision was imminent. The first thing he should have done was avoid the contact or minimize the impact but he didn’t do either of them. My point is, if he had enough time to take the puck away, he also had enough time to avoid the violent collision.
He didn’t have to take Letang out with his hit. All he had to do was obstructing the shot but he chose to hit Letang instead.
Stuart Reply:
November 30th, 2011 at 3:52 pm
@goldielocks, I’ve already heard it preached “play the man not the puck”…maybe they’ve been wrong all this time? Maybe they should just play the puck so that they can get tooled and look foolish when someone highly skilled undresses them en route to a score? Or they can play the body and eliminate the threat!
goldielocks Reply:
November 30th, 2011 at 4:47 pm
@Stuart,
I’m talking about choices between hit to the head and the body. Not between the hit and stick using. I mentioned his stick using because if he had a time to think that option at that very moment, he must have had a time to think about the hit also. Pacioretty had a time to make choices but chose wrong. If the player should respect the other player, avoiding the violent collision to the head is the obvious choise and should be priority.

@goldielocks, Don’t know if you’ve ever played any contact sports beyond high school level, but one thing is for sure the person with the momentum wins, so as soon as you try to avoid a collision at the last minute, you’ll be he one in rehab more often than not. These guys full well know the dangers of the game, that’s why they get the big bucks, it’s worth the gamble to them.

@Deke’r,
I had experienced in some contact sports more than high school level. Like when you headbutt, less pain for the one who throws it right?
This is about the direct hit on the head which the league is trying to eliminate. You can use your monetum as you like, if you’re not hittng opponents head.
g smith86 Reply:

@Stuart, They are trying to take that hit(the exact kind of hit the Pach laid on Letang) out of the game with out saying it. They want the players to have more respect for each other and when they are in vulnerable positions, wether they put themselves there or not, the defending player has to recognize that, and not make the hit. I’m not saying that this is necessarily a good thing, but if you look at the last 20 years in regards to that exact hit, it has lead to some pretty serious injuries to many of the star players in this league…like Lindross, Kariya and many others. The NHL should rename the penalty for that kind of hit the “Scott Stevens”

@Deke’r, as did our very own DD.
Across the middle is considered one of the “trenches” areas…nobody wants to make a living there because it will be short lived, but that where all the money (goals) is made! You go there to win games and you know you might not make it out in the same shape you went in. It’s not for the squeamish, but neither is this game.
I get the banning of the clutching and grabbing and trying to open up the game, but at the same time, opening up the game wratchets up the speed on the ice, and higher speed makes for faster/harder impacts, impacts that have always been there since day one.
Hopefully if Quick gets a shutout TM will be flexable enough to say “Bernier, I’m going with the hot hand right now, but your definately in there after Quick starts showing signs that he needs a rest”.

So much for TM not planning the goalie schedule ahead and “sticking with the hot hand.”
Why does he go against what he said he was going to do? What if Quick posts his 2nd straight shutout Thursday night? Is he going to take him out AGAIN because he already told Bernier he would start Saturday?

Just me nit-picking I guess.
Over in Vancouver, the Canucks are riding Cory Schneider’s 7 game winning streak, with a couple shutouts mixed in. Their coach is not saying Luongo might start at some point in the midst of it. Schneider will play until he cools off. Should be the way TM approaches it when he has a hot goalie as well.

I completely agree with TM saying “he might” start bernier, which leaves the options open and creates healthy competiion. This is the kind of psychology as a manager I’ve been looking for from TM as a coach and hope he employs more of it tactically in other areas as well. Bravo.
