Wednesday practice; no changes

Dustin Penner is practicing this morning, but is still skating on a line with scratched players Trevor Lewis and Brad Richardson. As indicated this morning, it would seem that Penner will remain on injured reserve for another couple days, and won’t play against Florida tomorrow. The Kings are using the same line combinations and pairs that they used in practice yesterday and in Monday’s game. More updates from practice to come…

    Is it DP’s choice no to play because he feels he’s not 100% ready; or is the coaching staff?

    Happy Lappy Reply:

    @KingsGuy, I think it’s a DL choice, I could see him being traded very soon.

    You know, the “scratch line” shows how deep this team has become.

    Penner-Lewis-Richardson would be a decent 3rd line for most teams.

    @Weasel, was thinking the same thing…the Scratch line has a nice ring to it.

    @Weasel, I would put them on the 3rd line tomorrow without any problem…

    @Weasel,
    Until you realize that we have a line playing that has Moreau and Westgarth on it, then it doesn’t seem so deep.

    I think Lewis needs to get back in action. He may not score, but he sure can do a lot of things on the ice that are helpful.

    @scvking, And Westgarth is outscoreing that scratch line atm…lol

    @Weasel, A decent 3rd line that would never score, maybe. But with the speed in Florida’s lineup, I think it’s a mistake to not at least put Richardson AND/OR Lewis back in… Westy doesnt need to play.

    Phillip Reply:

    @Weasel, On paper it may sound like a great third line, but when you look at their numbers…I think these guys would be sitting out games no matter who they were playing for.

    [Reply]

    Weasel Reply:

    @Phillip,

    True, based on current numbers. And obviously that’s why Richardson and Lewis are there right now. But the imaginary line has a little bit of everything from size and skill (Penner) to grit and speed (Lewis & Richardson).

    Loktionov better have a stellar game tomorrow. I see this as management giving him another chance to shine. One game at center is not enough.

    All for this.

    Would like to see Richardson switched with Hunter though.

    Happy Lappy Reply:

    @Cynic, yeah, Lotki has not impressed so far at winger or center, I hope he brings it tomorrow or it’s back to Man. or OHL

    Interesting stat: Out of the top 25 scorers in the league, Anze Kopitar leads all of them in ice time by almost a full two to three minutes. The only ones even close are Giroux and Malkin. Don’t really know what to make of that, other than maybe he’s used a little too much?

    Pesus Reply:

    @PP Anybody?,
    I would like to see him not waste so much energy in our own zone, I dont see too many top line centers working as hard as he does behind his own net and along the boards.

    What GM would take Penner off our hands?
    Crap performance with a huge salary. Unless DL knows the Jedi mind trick…..

    “This is the slow winger you’re looking for”…

    [Reply]

    Happy Lappy Reply:

    @bitter, If the salary hit was shared, I think the Ducks might take him back, he’s played his best hockey there and has played with many of the current Ducks, just throwing it out there.

    [Reply]

    Pesus Reply:

    @Happy Lappy,
    Im pretty sure you cant share the salary in the NHL. Someone correct me if Im wrong.

    Token Reply:

    @Pesus, Re-Entry waivers.

    DesertKing Reply:

    @Pesus,

    Quisp is the expert but I think it can only happen if yu pick someone up off of waivers?

    LA_1968 Reply:

    @Happy Lappy, Nah you can’t share it. To do that Ducks would have to send back someone that we could waive that’s paid about $2 million. Or something similar to the Smyth Fraser deal. They were going to dump Fraser.

    Token Reply:

    @bitter, Any number of teams that are struggling would love to have Penner after Murray beat The Grind into him and actually got him into game shape.

    Kings are famous for this as of late.

    Penner will play well on a skill/possession team. He sucks on a dump/chase/grind hope to score system.

    DesertKing Reply:

    @Token,

    So which teams would qualify as being good for Penner and then we can start our shopping list for DL ;)

    [Reply]

    Canadian King Reply:

    @bitter, He is tradeable because he is a UFA at the end of this year, and he could be had for very little. It’s a low risk high reward trade for another GM.

    [Reply]

    Jeff Reply:

    @Canadian King, Nobody is going to trade for him at almost 4 million. However at the trade deadline I could see teams looking for scoring, trying him out like the Kings did last year. Let me say it be much easier and get a better return if Penner plays and produces, which is why when he does he should be put with Kopi as Penner played well last season with him.

  9. Pesus says:

    Is it common for most teams to have a practice site? Seems like some teams have a little home ice advantage when it comes to the puck on the boards, or bouncing off the boards. Seems like teams come into staples and know our boards better than we do. I wonder if our home record would be better if the team practiced at staples.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

    @Pesus, i’ve always felt that we would have a considerably more noticeable “home-ice” advantage if we got to practice in Staples…but it’s just not feasible. I would like to know how many teams get to practice where they play.

    [Reply]

    Weasel Reply:

    @Pesus,

    I think it is common practice to have a dedicated practice rink. I think the main venue os too often unavailable due to other events and event prep.

    [Reply]

    Harry Reply:

    @Pesus,

    Most teams do have a practice rink…but keep in mind, the road teams that comes to LA, usually practices at Staples Center.

    Hi everyone first off I am a LOOOOONG time lurker, first time poster. Been a kings fan for over 22 years, love the team!!

    I am not a fan of Penner’s in the least and would definitely consider trading him for Semin from Wsh.

    Semin has one year @ 6 penner one year @ 4.?, both lazy, both overpaid, both can be cut loose at the end of the year. Semin may not fit into TM system but the guy can score more than Penner, is quicker but softer (mind you when i think tough I don’t think Penner lol).

    What do you say Kings fans, would you do that trade? I would.

    Thanks.

    [Reply]

    Jeff Reply:

    @notavanfangokings, You think Penner is bad, wait until you see Semin. Let me preface this by saying that I feel that both Penner and Semin need a hard-a** for a coach, as they seem to be the only ones to get them going. Penner had his best year with the Oilers when Pat Quinn was coach. Terry Murray is not that type of coach. Now I am not saying I think TM should be fired because he can’t get Penner going. If the Kings are going to keep Penner and go after Semin, then they need to get a Coach that can handle them and help them be successful. Semin could also stand to get out of Ovi’s shadow.

    this is so ridiculous. the only reason we won on Monday was we got fluke goal from Moreau (which won’t happen again) and Quick stood on his head. It had nothing to do with these lines. Get Hunter, Moreay and Westgarth out of the line up and put Lewis and Richardson in.
