Williams looking for some offense

Earlier, the subject of the consistent first line was covered. Justin Williams would like to see some consistency in his offensive game. Starting out on the first line, with Anze Kopitar and SImon Gagne, Williams had two goals and five assists in his first five games, but Williams has now gone 13 games without a goal. The work has been there for Williams, and he’s enjoying playing alongside Gagne, his former teammates in Philadelphia, but he’s still looking for some consistent production.

WILLIAMS: “When Gags came over here, I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed playing with him. He’s so easy to play with. He’s so quick and he creates a lot of space for me as well. He’s just a very intelligent and easy player to play with. He’s going to score and get himself in good positions for passes as well. Early on here, I seem to be passing a little bit more than maybe I should sometimes, trying to set up my linemates. If I get back to firing pucks myself and attacking the net a little bit more, maybe we’ll be able to score some rebound goals, and I can score some myself. That’s what I’ll be looking to do now, and get our line going and get myself going a little bit better on the goal side.’’

    Looks like a case of the penner is going around the room.

    @USHA@17, No, what he says makes sense. He’s been trying to be a play maker vs. a scorer. When he was on the line with Smyth, his job was to shoot while Smyth posted up in front of the net.

    Speaking of which, I’m sick over the season Smyth is having. All we heard is how washed up he, Zues and Poni were. Well, 2 of the 3 are having great years and how much do we miss them in front of the net?

    Yeahhh, I think now would be about the time to give Gagne-Richards-Williams a look.

    I was about to say I’m shocked TM hasn’t at least tried it at this point, but.. I’m not shocked. Just as I’m not shocked Moreau will be playing tomorrow. I would have loved if John Tortorella was our coach to hear what he would have said about Moreau after last night’s game. And you can bet Torts sure as hell would have scratched his a$$ for the next couple too!

    Ah Scot. So there you are. Yes, I left something on the other threads (especially the one about line’s stay the same) to the effect that I’m rather gobsmacked that Moreau plays again tomorrow. Business as usual. Penalty, no problem. Penalty that allows tying goal, no problem.

    If Bruce Boudreau can bench Semin for a game because of undisciplined penalties, I don’t quite get TM’s thought process here. To me it’s a way of saying ‘it’s ok, just get back at em’. The problem is, it Wasn’t ok even before the Dallas game. I’d of thought that that would be the perennial straw. But I guess not. Good luck to Moreau tomorrow to stay out of the box. Not just in a tight game, but for the whole game! Honestly, you couldn’t make this stuff up.

    Scot Reply:

    @number 6,

    Where’s the accountability around here? If there is accountability going on in the locker room that we don’t know about, great, but they should publicize it, because from the outside looking in, this looks really bad. But I don’t think there really is any. I think you hit the nail on the head with TM’s, “It’s ok, just get back at ‘em.”

    I’d like to hear how Moreau’s teammates felt about that penalty, and the others he’s been taking this year. I’m sure they aren’t stoked he’s still in the lineup, either.

    Scot Reply:

    @number 6,

    Exactly — Semin, a world-class talent. I was shocked by that too, but the guy doesn’t put his heart into it. If I’m not mistaken, Ilya Kovalchuk was healthy-scratched one game last year by the Devils. Also, the Avs healthy-scratched Chris Stewart for a couple games last year before they traded him to St. Louis. The Isles healhty-scratched Kyle Okposo last week for THREE GAMES.. And what did he do? Come back with a 2 goal, 1 assist performance. It’s called accountability, & it doesn’t seem that this coach places much emphasis on that.

    number 6 Reply:

    @Scot

    Hey Scot. What’s accountability. I hold mySelf accountable (too much so) when things don’t go right in my work. I have not been one of the anti-TM people on this site. I like him as a human being (from what I can tell) and know that he has some positive attributes as a coach, but if he isn’t gonna hold a veteran player accountable (Moreau has had one penalty avg every other game he’s played…. oh, did I mention no goals) then my vision of TM may gradually start to change.

    I was absolutely amazed that he lets him go the next game after such a needless and costly penalty.
    I was (as you can tell) thinking about it. To me it sends the following message to the team: ‘here’s what I think of that type of play….. it’s ok’.
    It’s at times difficult enough being a Kings fan w/o that sort of nonsense. Had it been one of say two or three minors he’d taken this year I’d probably be tempted to cut him more slack, but there’s a point, and then there’s a point.

    My issue with the Kings is they don’t have true top line wingers. I think Gagne, Williams and Brown are all solid second liners. A line of Gagne-Richards-Williams would be nice and if we put Kopi with Browner and trade for a true top line sniper. Right now the Kings aren’t consistent enough to compete with the elite teams cause Kopi and Richards have to do everything offensive. We are so close to being an elite team I can taste it, as always GKG!

    [Reply]

    Bama Kings Reply:

    @Canadian King, We have the assets to make that happen. I would kill for DD and Bernier to be moved. I know that is a risk in Bernier, but Quick can win us a Cup. You move DD and Bernier, you get anything you want in return. So long as it’s a guy with some yrs. left on his contract, I’m more than OK. In fact, you may be able to get a 30G scorer for DD straight up.

    The irony is, had we traded DD 5 months ago, we could have walked away with Vanek or someone of that caliber st. up. Now, that’s a reach.

    I’ll always love the Schenn for Richards type moves. Trade potential for reality, even if you don’t quite get back an equal ratio in the long run, you win by having sure bets in return.

    Richards for Schenn was BRILLIANT!

    Do another DL. Do a DD for a 35 / 40 Goal scorer. Add Bernier in and we’ll shore up our 3rd line.

    @JD, i’m talking his whole playoff career 4 wins, 8 losses, 3.39 gga, 900 save percentage, not exactaly patrick roy numbers

    Wilmonde Reply:

    @JD, I’ve seen comments like this before, and I’ve never understood why you would expect a goalie to be able to win an entire series on his own. If you’re going to win a series, it has to be a whole team effort, and sadly, we did not have a whole team effort in our series with the Sharks (I flet we had a good effort with Vancouver, but they outgunned us by a wide margin). If anything, we can thank Quick for “stealing” an extra game in San Jose and for keeping the series itself relatively close, but unfortunately for him (and us) the rest of the team just didn’t show up like they should’ve. Blame it on what you want (Kopi getting injured, Brown not stepping up, Penner not living up to our expectations, blowing that crazy lead in LA) but Quick played very well in our last playoff outing, especially when you consider the effort of the team in front of him.

    rick Reply:

    @Canadian King, I agree with you. Kopi and Richards are A+. Our top wingers are somewhere around B, or even lower. As has been the case seemingly forever, we still need a winger who is a 30 goal+ guy.

    Duckbasher Reply:

    unfortunately with the amount we pay Penner and DD we can’t afford to go out and get any proven snipers.
