Wednesday “skate” update

The Kings had a team meeting at the rink this morning, and Terry Murray said he will go with the same lineup against Dallas that he used last night, except for Jonathan Quick in goal.

The Kings have not heard anything in terms of supplemental discipline for Drew Doughty, for his hit on T.J. Oshie last night, so it’s doubtful that any is coming. More notes and quotes to come, including a look at the Kings’ new defensive pairings.

I’m sure a few Kingsfans will be disappointed that DD doesn’t get a spankin for being naughty. Probably won’t stop the complaining though. Good thing we never had Chelios on this team, or some people would lose their minds.

@lafan13, so is he now considered an “offender”? Meaning borderline checks in the future will be done by a “repeat offender”, rendering less margin for error?

    VanKingsFan Reply:

@lafan13, Doughty walks around with that much in his wallet I bet. $2500 fine is basically nothing and doubt it acts as any kind of “lesson”

    Gokings Reply:

@lafan13, Good for us. Thought for sure we were going to lose him for a couple games. Go get a win tonight boys!

@Dominick, It’s for the good of the game that he gets the same discipline we’d expect with anyone else. If they looked at it, and they think it doesn’t deserve discipline, that’s fine, but I wouldn’t want Dewey handled with kid gloves. It would be bad for the sport.

Interesting…they should at least fine doughty since he make way too much money. that was a stupid play on doughtys part with the game seconds from being over.

also, not sure why the versus guys kept saying these teams dont like eachother, there’s not been much history of any extra stuff between them before (maybe the blues didnt like being beat 5-0), but now with the late Brown hit at the end of the 2nd and the late doughty hit, maybe they actually really wont like eachother.

@Goring 19, Made him pay? The game went from 3-0 to 3-4 because of O’Donnell. Please never mention that play again!!!!

    [Reply]

    Goring 19 Reply:

@BluLiner, true, I guess we payed in the end. But then again they smoked us in that series, that’s why I still have animosity towards the Blues and their stupid bell they ring every time they score a goal. It’s sort of like the beat l.a. chant with the sharks. It’s little stuff I know but it gnaws at me.

@Sebastian, The Brown hit was perfectly legal, there was still time, no horn had sounded, and just the statement that they should fine doughty because he makes alot of money puts your comments in a special catagory all by itself. If DD doenst make that hit maybe they score to tie things up.

@Sebastian, i think those reports came from Engblom, who was ice-side and heard all the banter. I could totally see those reports being true. StLouis, who is already a take no kind of crap team (following their leader Backes) and taking on a stronger personality w/ coach Hitch and already being a big big squad.

@Sebastian, Brown’s hit was not late. It came right before the end of the period. It was brilliant because the Blues player ended up slashing BRown and taking a penalty while the Blues were already on the PP.

@LA_1968, Agreed. Love Quick but if I see another back-to-back with JQ in net I may scream. JB is too good to be collecting dust at the end of the bench.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@SpencerMaze, I don’t want to see back-to-back nights with any single goaltender. It’s senseless. That, and Murray has been acting like he’s afraid to start Bernier, which is nuts. There IS a middle ground, and Murray can’t seem to find it.

    [Reply]

    SpencerMaze Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, You bring up a good point. It does kinda seem like TM is afraid to start JB. Really hope this is not the case. He literally kept us in the game on many different occasions last night.

  5. DesertKing says:

After looking at the replay, I don’t think DD’s hit will warrant action. He didn’t really follow through and the contact didn’t seeme that significant. That being said, DD does have to be smarter and not put him himslef and the team in a position like that where his actions can be interpreted as one way or another.

  6. Mel Powell says:

Factor out that it’s a Kings’ player…I’d be interested to hear from Brendan Shanahan or Rob Blake why there would be *no* supplemental discipline for Doughty. It sure looked very similar to recent plays when they did hand out a fine or suspension. If you haven’t gone to nhl.com once in a while to watch Shanny explain a decision on and with video, I recommend it.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Mel Powell, I agree. It should be standard for them to explain themselves on the NHL web site so people know what factored into their decisions.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, And it is…when they issue a suspension. I haven’t read the news release on the Doughty fine yet, so maybe it’s there, but I’m wondering about the rationale for the non-suspension.

  7. Cowboy Bill says:

Since the refs handed out only a 2-minute penalty, and not a major, maybe that was the dtermining factor in no suspension?

    [Reply]

    petemagoop Reply:

@SpencerMaze, to come to that conclusion because you haven’t heard yet is my point – and of course no suspension is good for the Kings, but I do believe he is going to get suspended, and rightfully so I may add

    kingszzz Reply:

@Michael J., well, I think those who actually “watch” the games want to see Doughty sit because we DO care about the games. He’s soley responsible for at least 5 or 6 goals due to poor positioning and his +/- ranks 452nd.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Dominick, We want the league office to explain their reasoning so we can better understand. What’s wrong with that? Without any logic, the same kind of play could happen going down the playoff stretch, and the same player could be suspended three or four games. The truth is a good thing.

  14. jayhay says:

i thought DD would get something, especially if Oshie was injured. Kulka’s Korner reported last night that Oshie seemed “fine”, so perhaps DD did dodge something here. i think lost in all this, maybe the next biggest thing after GP missed, was the “repeat offender” label, which sometimes can really limit the way you’re able to play, because the microscope is on you in a way that wasnt before. To be labeled an offender now, carrying that label moving forward, so everytime there may be something on the edge that enters the conversation, can be very detrimental.

Is it just me, but ever since we called up the Russians KINGS HAVE BEEN PLAYING GREAT HOCKEY! Detorit game wasn’t even that bad compared to other losses this year!

MR is playing great with Loki, his speed gives MR more room to play & his pts have shot up since Loki & MR team up!

Speed is the key to playing two-way hockey, TM keep the russians, if you send any of them down, losing strek #2 will start!

TM mistakes this season. Not playing JQ after 3 game shutout!
Sending SV DOWN when he was just getting hot
Relying on Penner game this year…
Not benching DD for his mistakes, sitting others for the same mistakes!
    Playing NJ STYLE hockey.

TM good ideals this season. Opening up the game the last 7 games
    Calling up the Russians
    Putting Loki with MR
Using SV on the power play!

Fantasy hockey tags from rotowire are sometimes outrageous! This is what it says about MR.

“Richards seems to be enjoying life in his new city much more than former teammate Jeff Carter, but, in fairness to Carter, the bars are better in Los Angeles than Columbus. Kidding aside, Richards is proving to be the steady producer the Kings hoped for when they acquired the veteran, as he has six points in the last four games. Roll Richards with confidence.”

Chris Stewart only got 3 games for his hit on Kronwall a few games back. That was night and day compared to Doughty’s hit on Oshie. Kronwall was going directly in to the boards.
