Doughty fined $2,500 for hit

The NHL has announced — news release here — that Drew Doughty has been fined $2,500 for his hit last night on St. Louis’ T.J. Oshie. That’s the maximum fine allowed under the collective-bargaining agreement. Doughty, who received a minor cross-checking penalty on the hit, will not be suspended.

The amount of the fine is not fair proportionally to a particular player’s salary. A player that makes $600k is fined the same amount as a player that makes $7 million? They need to change that in the next CBA.

    VanKingsFan Reply:

@Eric, Trying to think of a good analogy to disagree with you ….

that is like saying, well this guy is only 21 years old, we can give him 30 years in prison. And for the same crime, we will give this man 10 years in prison because he is 50 years old. So proportional to the time he has left in the world lets take away more from the person he has more.

    Same crime, same punishment.

@jimbo1007, Helvetica is right. Consider: guys in the NFL getting fined $15,000-$25,000 for bad hits without getting suspended. The league is not saying that the hits are bad, but the behavior warrants attention. I think the NHL is doing a better job of sending the message that these fines and/or suspensions are made with the intent of eliminating dangerous plays from the game. Shanahan has been consistent, for now, regarding the goal of these punishments is to help the players understand that these suspensions are for the players’ benefit.

It was in the heat of battle with the puck in our zone as time was running out. He was doing whatever was necessary to make sure the guy wasn’t coming out of the corner.
Based on the time remaining, I would probably agree, but he didn’t know how much or little time was left.

    [Reply]

    VanKingsFan Reply:

@nykingfan, You are correct, he wanted to stop him from coming out of the corner, but he should pinned him against the boards with a bear hug or something rather than a dangerous play like that.

noknow…You should know when it’s late in a game..but to ask a player to know whether there’s 2 seeconds or a 50 seconds when he’s battling for a puck in the corner is asking way too much of anyone.

@nykingfan, I didnt see the game just saw the highlights so i will have to agree w/your reply, but there definitely should have been different defensive techniques applied in that situation…..i believe just from what i saw in the highlight & thinking like a D that he knew the clock or (once again my opinion) he wouldve gotten more agressive defensively

@nykingfan, When is a cross-check, away from the crease, “necessary?”

    PRMan Reply:

@VanKingsFan, I wouldn’t say unnecessary. The hit was to keep him from having the room to backhand the puck into the slot. It was very effective from that standpoint. The only problem is that Doughty was far enough away from the boards that it didn’t quite work out.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @PRMan,
In a way it did work out. The puck never came out from the corner. Also by the time the ref blew the whistle for the penalty, several seconds ran off while St. Louis was playing a man short. (The guy DD knocked down)
In the end he got a 1.4 second penalty..even if the D’men don’t come in, what are the chances they’re scoring on a faceoff with that much time left?
I had no problem with how it all worked out.

    370455vinSD Reply:

It’s how the league tends to work:
1: Are they a goon, superstar, role player or Sean Avery?
2: Was the result an injury, blood everywhere, nothing at all, or replayed endlessly on ESPN?
3: Was it from a hard hit, a fight, incidental contact, or some profane gesture or comment?

Goons get suspended always, superstars get fined at most, role players get suspended sometimes, and Sean Avery is sent to therapy. Boston players never get anything.

There was one in preseason, (Clune, I think), that put him out of the rest of the preseason. In another game where two Kings players were hit in the head and into the boards resulting in missed games, yet nothing. What does the dollar amount of the fine have to do with what a player makes?

The amount of the fine is just an arbitrary amount that was negotiated by their labor union. The $2500 fine is more of symbolic gesture to any player. It’s nothing even to a guy making league minimum. The league does however keep track of how many times a player has been fined as well as suspended and I’m sure all instances of fines influence future disciplinary decisions.

To suggest that fines should be connected to salary is silly. It’s like saying parking tickets for expensive cars should be more expensive. The fine amount is based on the infraction, not on ability to pay.

what infuriarated me, was the blues players that did the roughing on doughty immediately after the hit with no penalty. How? punches were thrown, 3-4 blues players left their position and did what i would call at minimum, ‘roughing.’ drew didn’t have the puck! just because someone takes an infraction on your teammate you don’t get carte blache to be physical back without receiving a penalty.

finally: i haven’t said much this year, and missed the blog gathering, but i am not impressed with mr.7 million dollar man. he is not playing like he did 2 years ago. he hasn’t done the things like he did to initiate or be involved in the offense. he’s also, they all do, turning the puck over alot, and not from being slammed on the boards, but free to make a choice. this from someone i expect more from, and i know he can do it. in my mind, his play is not up to his pay incrase. i’m just expecting him to be like he was when nominated for the norris 2 years ago. that’s my piece.
