Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts…
(on the game…)
MURRAY: “Well, it was a difficult game. St. Louis came out in the first period and they were putting a lot of pressure, really on the puck, over the top of us. We had opportunities to pass the puck on a couple of those breakouts, and we just made a poor pass, and that brought the puck right back into our end. So there was a lot going on very early, a lot of pressure, and it ended up being a pretty exciting hockey game.’’
(on the first period…)
MURRAY: “I thought we put a little bit of pressure on ourselves, in our end, because of just managing the puck. We got it going from below our goal line, but once we got it up to the top of the circle and the red line, then we had some problems. That’s where the turnovers happened and they were coming back at us. And they don’t hesitate with the attitude on the forecheck. Their north attitude was very, very persistent in the game, and early, it put a lot of pressure on us.’’
(on Mike Richards’ play…)
MURRAY: “Mike Richards played very well. A nice play by Loktionov. He ends up knocking the puck down and makes the play. Richards has been very hot and playing very well. He’s starting to feel comfortable in L.A. and we’re excited about that.’’
(on Richards going 15-for-16 on faceoffs…)
MURRAY: “He was very good, I know that. He’s a good player. He brings all elements of the game, and he’s so focused. That’s what makes Mike Richards Mike Richards. He gets into that zone of compete, and he just seems to be able to take over in situations. That’s where great players do that kind of stuff, and he was a good player for us tonight.’’
Pretty darn good description of Richards by TM.

Kopi and Richards are playing so good right now that they don’t need the extra pressure that accompanies the C and A, yes I know Kopi already has an A. Brown has been playing much better recently. I know not everyone loves him, but he brings it every night and competes no matter how his offense is going.

@CB14 & jess,
Man, I can’t believe I was actually studying during this whole conversation! I feel like the guy in that phone commercial where there’s a Taco Party in the office & he was the last one to find about it!
I definitely am of the belief that we don’t have the right Captain right now. I love Brown too, he definitely brings energy every night, consistently. But usually, when you look at a Captain, it’s a player who doesn’t just consistently give 100% every night, but also puts up production consistently, specifically goals, assists, and points. That should be what your leader does.
That said, I agree that now is not the time to strip Captaincy from anybody, & pass it to another player. It would need to happen during the offseason, OR, which happens much more frequently, the Captain would need to be traded. It’s just easier that way. I’m not saying I want Brown traded, but he has been mentioned in *internet rumors* to be packaged for an impact player. That’s the only way I see the Kings getting a new Captain this season.
Brown is a good player, he was the right choice for Captain at the time it was given to him, but I think it’s clear that there are better choices now. I know that hurts the hearts of some Kings fans who have watched Brown grow up since he was 18, and in all honesty, I would love to keep him on the team in some regard. He definitely should wear an “A,” but I don’t know about the C. He just doesn’t score enough goals, & that’s what he’s counted on to do. Captains do all the things they are counted on to do, consistently.

@CB14,
That’s the other thing CB, as Eric mentioned below, the diving. Brown dives ALL the time, and it totally makes you lose respect for all the other things he does. Captains should not dive to try and draw penalties, it’s totally unsportsmanlike. That can’t be denied about Brown, he is hated around the league for it, and captains are supposed to be respected.
CB14 Reply:
November 22nd, 2011 at 10:46 pm
@Scot, I don’t think the Captaincy is just for the best player. As long as it’s one of your better players, that’s all that’s really needed IMO. Brown plays on the #1 PP, he plays on the PK, he’s on the ice at the end of games, regardless of whether the Kings are ahead or behind in the game. Those things to me are more than enough to justify him having the C on his jersey.
“He just doesn’t score enough goals, & that’s what he’s counted on to do.” First, he led the Kings in goals last year. Second, he was expected to be anywhere from the Kings 3rd highest goal scorer, to the 6th highest goal scorer, right now he’s 4th on the Kings in goals. Also, he hasn’t had a consistant LW to play with all of last year and the 21 games this year. He’s not a natural goal scorer, he’s a power forward who works his butt off and puts the puck in the net.
Regarding the diving, I hate it too, but I don’t think it matters if he’s respected around the league. The Sedin sister is Vancouvers captain, and he dives more then Brown.
CB14 Reply:
November 22nd, 2011 at 10:54 pm
@Scot, One more thing. Something that often gets overlooked is the fact that Brown has led the Kings in hits pretty much every year he’s been with the Kings, and yet he plays pretty much every single game. He’s played at least 78 games in 6 straight years, and every game so far this year. He plays in all these games while being the most physical player on the ice every single night. If that doesn’t earn respect from his teammates and other players around the league, I don’t know what will. That type of physical play and reliability is unheard of, and lets not forget he’s scored at least 24 goals in 4 straight seasons. I’ll take that from my captain every day of the week, and twice on sunday.
Scot Reply:

@CB14,
Good points. My only rebuttle is wondering why we aren’t seeing Brown hit this year like he usually does? We aren’t seeing him throw himself at people like we used to. But as much as I’d like Kopitar to be the Captain, it definitely isn’t my biggest concern. I would rather see the coach replaced than the captain replaced. That’s my biggest concern, and I think that would help the team a lot more than a Captaincy change.

@Scot, Brownie is great…gives effort 100 percent of the time all the time…but thats not the complete role of a captain. In my opinion, Brownie lacks the intellect to be a captain. Our captain is #11 or # 10…because if we know one thing they can do is demonstrate how to play the game on the ice…an certainly be able to translate that off the ice

I wouldn’t give the top offensive player a “C.” Some guys don’t play as well with the C as they did without it(see Dustin Brown for clarification). I’d give the C to a guy like Matt Greene. He lays it all on the line. He’s a workhorse.
Brown is a horrible captain. I don’t like the sight of seeing a captain dive all over the ice like a Canuck, not stand up for his teammates, and get consistently pushed around. Not my kind of captain.

@408kingsfan, You’re correct, but I think alot of that had to do with the Coaching change. Kopi also went from a 30 goal scorer to under 30 when TM came along. To me the drop in goals was due to a defense first menatlity, as opposed to a more wide open system under Crawford.

@jess, When the Kings “reach a new plateau in growth” it is neither big or small, simply because they are still at base camp. I don’t understand why the captain has to be your top scorer, or best defender. A good captain leads by example, on and off the ice. I think people forget just how much Brown does away from the rink, along with his work ethic.
I don’t think making a change right now is going to do anything. We also don’t really know what the real story was in Philly with the rumors that Richards and Carter were causing a divide or if it was a Chris Pronger thing.
The whole pressure having that C on your sweater, especially for a new player, seems like it would disrupt Richards. Richards doesn’t know this coach or players very well right now. He is getting to know a new system, in a new city. Let him have a season before he is given this title.
Richards can still be a leader dispite a letter on his sweater.
Let the current arrangement remain intact.
Last season, Brown carried the Kings on his back, when it counted.
This should be a move made after the season is over, rather than after 21 games.

Richards doesn’t want to be Captain, and didn’t like all the media attention in Philly. One of the things he was really looking forward too this season was that he can just concentrate on hockey this season.
Kopi likes where he’s at, and feels Brown is exactly the kind of leader that the Kings need.
Brown has been one of the hardest workers on the team, and had a longer tenure as a King than any player on the Kings.
Neither Kopi, or Richards wants what your proposing, or feel that Brown is not worthy and needs to be replaced, so your thoughts on the matter are closed.

@jess, Leadership is something you can be born with (the ability to inspire people), but it is very much something that is learned and practiced in application.
The comment that Greene should be the C is lunacy. The number of mental mistakes he makes, turn-overs and bad penalties makes him a no-go.
Brown is our captain for this year. Maybe next year we see a change, but I don’t hink being our best player has squat to do with it. The real key for a captaincy change will be if there is a coaching change next year.
I look at the year Tampa won the cup – it wasn’t St. Louis or Lecaviler , it was Dave A. who was the guy in the room making sure the system was followed.
The reason it doesn’t seem like we have a leader is cause there is a sense of anarchy in the locker room. TM is changing his system, making it more open cause of the reality we are facing and that he is facing (replacement). Justin Williams has been vocal in some of his critiques of that system.
You ask me, Justin Williams is as much a leader as anyone else is on this team. He is spot on in his words, he has the experience and he is a big part of our team offensively.
You keep DB as the captain this year and look at the big picture next year.
The true sadness in all of this, no one mentions DD. Highest paid guy on the team, constantly under performing and no one mentions him as a leader.
I swear to God I hope we trade him while there is still this mystique around him that pushes his value. I screamed 5 months ago that we should move him for Vanek. DD is an absence in every way on this team.
OK… done.

Sorry but I get my inspiration on this one from Sydney Crosby, and I guess making a mid-season change is probably a bad idea but I do think a change should be made. I disagree with many of you who say the ‘C’ or the ‘A’ means nothing. I think Brown is a great asset to the team but I personally think others need to lead at this juncture and you know who my picks are for that.

Lokti should stay on LW with Brown and Richards until there’s a better replacement for him on the 2nd line, right now there’s no one else deserving of playing on the top 2 lines. Yeah we got 2 points but Im sorry, Im not happy. If it wasnt for a bad pass we maybe go 0-6 on the PP. If not for a lucky bounce we dont win. Our attack creates no chances. Thats the problem, its been the problem. We need Penner and Parse back and we need them to produce.
People on this blog been getting on Brown a little bit saying he’s not a top 6. I think he would be a great 3rd line winger. Its not his fault he’s the 2nd best right winger we have. Dont get me started on Doughty. So far, I’ll say it again, so far what a waste of 7 mil. I think with more playing time Bernier plays even better, maybe stopping the 1st goal tonight.
We won 5 of 7, lets hope we can build on it and get on some kinds of roll. Maybe improve on creating scoring chances.

Something Else I might like to add to this Brown being Captain thing… Dude has been with this club from the start. No he’s not our best player, but he’s our best teammate. Hockey is a hard sport And I would argue that it is the hardest sport. Brown brings it every night. No he’s not a big highlight guy, nor will he light up the score board. This team is fine just the way it is. OOpps except for our bottom lines scoring. We need these guys to score more. Stoll where are you. Your out there hustling, but your not finding the back of the net. Just act as if your on the shoot out and the puck will bounce your way. I’m glad to see everyone commenting on Mr Richards!
As i said months ago # 10 does everything well.
Our PP is better this year solely because of MR. He’s great on the PK and has also back checks well too
look at the passes that he has made to Kopi and JJ so far! And when he needs to he can also snip with
the best of them. And tonight he was a beast in the face off circle.
It looks like him and Lotki are starting to build some chemistry together. Imagine if Gagne and MR were
playing together.
What do u think Philly thinks about the trade right now???
Gotta love our centermen 1A and 1B Kopi and MR!!!

amazing to me that lost in the entire thread, and the broadcast on tv, and on the highlights on NHL on the fly, but not lost to Terry Murray… Hell of a nice pass from Loktionov. Yes, I’m being a cheerleader here because a number of you were adamant about the fact that he wasn’t going to nor should he be recalled when Penner went down BECAUSE HE’S A CENTER… then you all bought into some stupid Terry Murray quote (as if it was him and not Lombardi that makes roster decisions) about how he doesn’t like him at wing BECAUSE HE’S A CENTER… then he goes out and over the past few games has had excellent chemistry with Richards (Detroit game doesn’t count, everyone sucked) and has gotten primary assists on two goals… The kid needs more than a sniff on that ridiculously weak power play. All the “the Kings have power play goals in x number of games in a row” crap is just that… crap… the power play stinks. Mostly because they generally lose possession of the puck and are constantly scrambling to figure out how to enter the zone. Five or six attempts a night, one power play goal, is reminiscent of the blind squirrel finding the acorn. It happens… So Loktionov sits on the bench while Trent Hunter or Ethan Moreau muddle through the man advantage? Ridonkulous. Come on TM… wake up and smell the video tape. Loktionov is working well with Richards in the offensive zone. In the immortal words of the late Andrea True… “More, More, More.”
thank you.

@Marc Nathan, Usually the way it works Mark, players have to prove themselves at a position before we can start praising their efforts there. I was one of those who was very nervous about bringing Lokti up at LW again as he hasn’t shown me much at this level playing in THAT position.
He has played much better since he has been up, BUT he’s got a ways to go before I’d be comfortable with him full time at LW. There are PLENTY of timing mistakes that he has made in the form of passes (especially no-look ones) and pinching attempts in the corners where he does not fully commit to get dirty and dig pucks out.
There is NO DOUBT the kid has serious skills and vision for playmaking. His pass to Richards was the FIRST thing I personally noticed on the goal. I was worried about his positioning to GET the puck there, just standing there not moving. If that d-man moves that puck up the boards, Lokti is STUCK at a stand-still and the Blues have an odd-numbered attack developing. Credit to Andrei, he pulled it off AND finished, but any coach will tell you that is a dangerous, all-or-nothing play that you do NOT want to see executed on a regular basis.
I do agree with you about the PP EXCEPT that I don’t think it’s entirely crap. the SECOND unit is crap, but the 1st unit has made some ridiculously unreal passes when they set up to open up shooting lanes. Serious skill on the 1st PP line. I do think Lokti would do wonders for the 2nd PP unit though.
I also think I wouldn’t mind seeing Penner traded (If someone was desperate enough to take him). Lokti could easily stay and do better than him at LW with Richards, but I will say that I give Richards a LOT of credit for Lokti’s success right now. I’m not knocking Lokti there, it’s just that Richards makes it easier for him to adjust and learn the position better. Really is the perfect fit for Lokti if he’s gonna learn and play LW in the NHL.

@Cynic, the crap part on the PP is that their faceoff pctg. on first faceoffs directly after a penalty has to be about 20% this year. Seriously

brown doesn’t dive. if this is what you are referring to, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v6UGsxJ6qM then you can clearly see the toe of his skate was caught on the ice, hence the ice spraying up when he puts his foot forward and trips. happens all the time. learn hockey before you go make stupid accusations.

MY favorite part about last night was seeing the double block attempt from Kopitar and Richards when the Blues had pulled their goalie. neither of them got the block but Man that was beautiful!
Im not sure who told Doughty not to carry the puck through the neutral zone, but i dont like it.
Voynov, had a very good game, really had the “shot mentality” but they were actually quality shots with traffic, etc.
Williams and Gagne were very quiet tonight.
Bernier really needed a game like this….great win for him.
Versus coverage was pretty good. i really enjoyed it.
Mitchells interview was great, he nailed it.

Reading many of the posts here with ‘YOUR’ when you mean YOU’RE or THEIR when you mean THERE make me cringe more than DD’s blatant defensive breakdowns.
If those mistakes do not go unnoticed by us, the all knowing fans, I imagine coaches and management are already addressing them in practice and/or meetings. Inevitably, DD will have to suffer loss of play time and being called out by his team mates if his brain farts continue.
Perhaps DD needs to shave that silly excuse of a mustache, lol.
And HELL NO!! this team does not need a new captain.

And FFS, will someone please shoot down every sports commentator that has nothing else to say about hockey unless it relates to Cindy Crosby’s return?
The idiotic assumptions and projections these people make on TV based on one 4 pt game are laughable. Everyone seems to forget that after almost one entire season out with a brain injury, Crosby is one heck of a player, but a fragile body.
Even the refs are blatantly trying to protect him. He drew a cross checking penalty on a defender that only pushed him out of the crease. What a farce!!
