Alec Martinez and Dustin Penner are both able to return from injured reserve, but Terry Murray said neither will play tomorrow at St. Louis or Wednesday at Dallas. Penner is recovering from a hand injury and Martinez hasn’t played since going shoulder-first into the boards on a big hit against Minnesota.
MURRAY: “(Penner is) able to get involved in part of the practice, handling the puck, shooting the puck. He’s not shooting the puck the way he can. … He’s still a ways away (from playing).
“(Martinez is) skating. He’s not able to participate in the practice, no contact. It’s improvement, but he’s not going to be ready for these two games, and still a little bit away from playing.’’
Are we in the air yet???

what is the way that penner shoots the puck? We haven’t experienced it that yet.

I’m glad Penner is still out, but not for the reasons most of the rest of you are. The knee is gonna get better and better along with his hand. I bet he is a different player when it gets back.

@KC23, I’m thinking the same thing, really would like to see him get it back together. It would be best for our team if he could.

@KC23, I hope so. I hate how people keep dogging him so hard, but he sure hasn’t played up to expectations. I want him to prove everyone wrong and be the player the Kings traded for. He’s really an asset to this team.

@DanD, I’d like to see Penner do more of what Ryan Smith did for us. Parked in front of the goalie on the PP tipping shots from JJ, Stoll, DD… well… that is if they would get their shots on net every once in a while. Penner is a way better player than he’s shown. And I haven’t given up on him (yet). He has no trade value, so we need to get the most from him we can.
[Reply]
Too bad for Martinez. We’ve really missed Penner on offense (insert significantly large amount of cynicism here)
[Reply]
Maybe someone can explain it to me, but how is a Martinez “able to return from injured reserve” yet “not able to participate in the practice, no contact.”
Doesn’t being able to return from IR mean you’re medically cleared to play? So then, how can you be medically cleared but not able to take contact?

@wavesinair,
Could this be just a creative way not to have to put someone on waivers until a trade is done?

He meant that the minimum time that you have to be on IR is now over and once Martinez and Penner are healthy they can come back without any problems.

Thanks. So the days are up but they remain on IR. Didn’t read it that way at first.

I think the best thing for Penner is to not come back too early from this injury. Penner needs to be 100% because if he doesn’t start producing soon after, he’s either gonna get moved (which could be a win-win for both parties) or Penner stays and watches his stock continue to fall. This would be the worse timing being an UFA July 1st…
[Reply]
great news! Hope they give them a long recovery time to make sure they are fully healed. Maybe keep them out till Xmas just to make sure!

Earlier Puck73 said something that has not left my mind all afternoon. “Penner and Stoll need to justify their 7 mil worth of contracts” Clearly these two need to get their acts together. Put Stoll, Penner and Parse on the same line and see who scores first. These guys have got to do more. Here I go playing coach again. I don’t know what the problem is. If there really is a problem. The NHL is no joke. Every team has awesome players and every game could be an upset. This league is balanced and most teams are about even. San Jose, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Washington are the top 4. Until we prove we can play right with these teams we will always be looked at just an average team, by the press and others. We don’t scare anybody as of yet. Good thing we play most of the teams more than once. I just want to see this club earn the respect of the league and from other teams fans. LA King fans are still not respected by others. We must win consistently. Hey we have a good record and the season is still young. Will we win the Cup this year? Bet your ass we will!!! We are going to correct this ship and get this season rolling right. When we are in the conference finals, we will all look back at our lame post from November and realize how dumb we were.

@kinginsaltlake, I want some of what you’re smoking because it must be really really potent. You think that THIS team is going to win the Cup this season??? We’re 10-10 with an anemic offense, average special teams, and better than average defense and goaltending. This team, as currently staffed, isn’t going anywhere unless some of the players do a complete 180. You think that you can win a Cup with the bottom six forwards we have? Not a chance, pal.

In a sidenote: Sidney Crosby has more points in 2 periods tonight than Penner has had in 14 games.
