    Great game from Richardson, and yet once again no points in the box score. You gotta figure he’s gonna catch a break eventually…

    [Reply]

    Brent Reply:

    @cjms, Last year that break came in late November for Brad. I still think that he rushes his shot too much. If he’d take a split second to make sure it is on goal, he would score more often. He is in too much of a hurry getting his shot away.

    Re: the empty-net goal: 6 on 4 is no fun, but the consolation prize is that you can fire away from anywhere and not worry about the face-off. Pays to mess around after practice and try long-distance shots

  9. Poorman says:

    Let me tell you this. In all my years of watching the Kings, I have rarely seen a better goal than Richards goal that sealed the victory. That goal from what 80 feet absolutely devastated the Ducks. What an unbelievably awesome shot. The more I see him play, the more I realize that he is a bigtime player.

    [Reply]

    M.T. Netter Reply:

    @Poorman, he NAILED that one! he hit the net dead center (from behind his own blueline).

    [Reply]

    wes Reply:

    @Poorman, an empty net goal. “rarely seen a better goal”? nice goal to get in that it put a lid on the Ducks late in a close game, but i’ve seen thousands of better goals, including many from Richards

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @Poorman, It’s amazing how much better Mike Richards has played since TM changed the system. And you are right, this is the type of player that enjoys playing great when it counts. I hope if you are in LA in the near future, you will meet us sometime at the Gretzky statue before the game. Its time for Jimmy to meet some of the insiders, in fact, long overdue.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

    @Poorman, I was shocked how fast Richards got that empty net goal shot off. Geez, he gathered and shot the lenght of the ice, dead on, in a fraction of a second and with some power. Richards is a born winner, you can just feel it when he is on the ice during pressure moments.

    [Reply]

    Scot Reply:

    @KC23,

    He has that killer instinct this team has lacked for a long time.

    [Reply]

    Roger Reply:

    @Poorman, Really an empty netter was the most impressive goal in all your years?

    [Reply]

    Poorman Reply:

    @Roger, The way he shot it so quickly and from such a distance made it insane. I haven’t seen anybody do it that well given the fact Ducks players were all around him when he took it.

    [Reply]

    PP Anybody? Reply:

    @Poorman, Weren’t you saying you thought giving up Schenn for Richards was a mistake? At least I think I recall you saying that.

    [Reply]

    @PP Anybody?, I did. Guess, I screwed that one up at this point. How is Schenn doing?

    he’s been injured, 0 points in like 8 games or something.

  10. Kings Fan South says:

    Stayed up on the East Coast to watch the game live and glad I did. Please do not make any lineup changes. Leave Richardson in. He brought great energy tonight Loki hit the score sheet and came inches from registering a goal. VV is a stud. I have said it all along. He is hiting the score sheet almost nightly while DD is getting his legs. The boys can compete as an elite team when they open it up. I said that a week ago about the system. 8 out of 10 points in the past 5 games has shot us to the Division lead (Yes, we have played more games than most). Please leave it along TM. Now let’s beat the pesky Red Wings!
    Side note….the Ducks remind me of the Canes right now. Big problems.
    Go Kings Go!

    [Reply]

  11. nykingfan says:

    That was an exciting 20 minutes of hockey.
    Fox was right on…we were terrible on the 4 minute pp and it came back to bite us hard.
    Great character win though. They fought back and deserved the points.

    Strange…why aren’t we hearing about how it’s time to fire TM..DL?
    It wasn’t too long ago during that skid when you were all calling for their heads and the demise of the Kings.
    You would hope that people would learn and realize that the hockey season is full of peaks and valley’s, but they won’t. The next losing skid the same people will be back calling for their heads again. Perhaps reading this they might realize why we shake our heads and laugh at the silliness…but I digress! lol

    VV continues to impress me more and more. He’s so poised with the puck and has the smarts and vision to know how to get open. As someone above said..what depth!

    Let’s keep the train rolling boys. another big game on Saturday.

    GO KINGS!

    [Reply]

    Cruiznblue Reply:

    @nykingfan,

    Probably because TM finally started making some changes to the system or at least has appeared to…Kings are scoring a little more lately.

    Also if you recall reading a lot of those posts people kept questioning why management was leaving in a lackluster Penner/Martinez and not bringing up Voynov/Loki. The only reason those 2 players got called recently up is because of injuries…and they are paying almost instant dividends. The team is playing really well now…I think Richards and Brown are playing way better with Loki then they were with Penner.

    So wait for Martinez/Penner to get healthy again and to see a thriving Loki/Voynov sent back down because that’s what TM does…then you’ll hear the gouls coming out again.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Cruiznblue,
    You need the personnel in order to make the changes. Having guys like Richards and Gagne allows him to open the offense up a little more. Fi he would have done this in previous years, we would have lost games 6-3 instead of winning 2-1.

    You and I would be playing better with Brownie/Richards than Penner!
    but short of buying him out or trading him (highly unlikely) you can’t bench a contract like Penner’s..no matter what they say.
    Also, while Lokti has looked good, he’s still a rookie and we don’t know how he’ll react when the adrenaline dies down or even if he can stay healthy. Having a veteran (even Penner) gives the coaching staff some peace of mind when the games become even bigger.
    I’m not a Penner fan at all, but you have to look at it from GM/Ownership point of view.
    When the trade went down last year, most of us were 100% behind the move. who would hae figured he would suck as bad as he did?

    I’m not sure that Martinez really “lost” his job. He’s been playing well recently and showed us all he’s an NHL defenseman last year. He also showed his toughness playing with the injury and scoring a big goal.
    Personnel decisions as far as player movement is not TM’s call. that’s strickly the GM’s call. If that was the case, you’re blaming the wrong guy.

    So tell me..what do you do when you have 7 quality defensman for 6 positions?
    Do you trade your depth and pray you don’t get an injry over the remaining 60 games, or do you warehouse your depth in Manchester and have the freedom to move him up and down as need be? It makes less than no sense to carry VV as the 7th defensman and let his talent rot in the press box..not a good option at all.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

    @nykingfan, Sorry, but saying the King’s have 7 quality defensemen is like someone telling me Van Nuys is now a beautiful city. I just have a hard time wrapping my head around it.

    sides, imho we have 9 quality defensemen. Hickey and DD2 are both very good defensemen in their own right.

    Now about the wingers … DL to the white courtsey phone ;)

    Roger Reply:

    @nykingfan, try and trade Drewiske

    Cruiznblue Reply:

    @nykingfan,

    No reason to sit on potential talent anymore…VV is proving himself so why not use him? This is the year were supposed to make a run then we need to use the best talent we have.

    And I agree with KC23…we have more than 7 quality defenseman. What to do with the odd D out is for DL to decide….but let’s play the ones who are being the most productive. No one cares how well the kings affiliate team does this year.

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Cruiznblue,

    I don’t care about Manchester, but that’s where you keep your talent while they’re developing or while there’s no room for them on the big club.
    I love how VV is playing, but we haven’t gotten a true sample of games to make final determinations. I think we’ve seen enough of Martinez to know he can play at this level. It’s about experience.
    I don’t know about anyone else, but I haven’t seen Hickey play an NHL game so I’ll reseerve judgment on whether he’s NHL caliber player or not. DD2, with the guys we have, is no better than a 7th defensman. that’s his role.
    How it all shakes out is the coach/GM decision…whichever way they go, we’re still sitting pretty on the blueline.

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Roger,

    Which of our young kids do you want sitting in the press box instead of developing their talent?

    Shotongoal Reply:

    @Cruiznblue, MURRAY DOES NOT send players down! GM DEAN LOMBARDI DOES and for good reason! Why do some have a hard time understanding that? The coach coaches the GM manages!I

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @nykingfan, You want criticism of Murray? He shouldn’t have started Quick. It was a stupid move, but he got away with it. There you go.

    nykingfan Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,
    why was it a stupid move?

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    Because it shouldn’t have worked, it didn’t last time, and it sends a clear message to Bernier that he’s afraid to put him in. Back-to-back games are by far the best excuse to put in the backup goaltender. It would be one thing if there was some REASON to do such a thing, but there was no indication that there was.

    [Reply]

    Gmo Reply:

    @nykingfan,
    Great post btw
    If I may say you might be a bit wrong. Most ppl were calling for TM head, and to some degree rightfully so . I was one of them. I wanted him fired or I wanted him to change his system (open it up) to allow our players to succeed. I mean we have so much talent on this Whatever changes TM made I’m very excited about, you can tell they are playing a different brand of hockey and I like it.

    Voynov 5pts in 7 games.
    Martinez 2pts in 16 games.
    Please for the love of the anything common sense leave Voynov in!

    I missed the game last night but watching the highlights Loki looked good in the few highlight reels he was in. Even if he is making little mistakes or being too fancy…those can be quick lessons and easily avoided next time. Penner made multiple bad plays almost every game…many I can recall accounted for goals for the other team. Loki>Penner

    Keep it rolling boys! GKG!

    [Reply]

    Resedakingsfan Reply:

    @Cruiznblue, I’m with you on this one. I like AMart but he hasn’t been playing like he did last season. Slava is lighting it up and is proving he has the skills to play in the NHL. He’s making it real tough for DL to send him back to Manchester. What I liked best about the game last night was the first goal by Richards with assists to the two rookies – Slava and Lokti. Great job, boys!!

  13. M.T. Netter says:

    I didn’t watch the entire game, but I saw Clifford get punked a lot…I saw his wrestling match in the 2nd, but did he drop the gloves later?

  14. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

    I’m NOT good with Murray starting Quick back-to-back, but I’m happy with the way he and the team responded. They kinda let it slip in the third, but they showed the ability to bounce back and finish the game. Scuderi talked about playing 60 minutes, but there were FOUR in particular they didn’t put in a satisfactory effort. I am a little concerned about them not executing with a sense of urgency on 5-3s, majors and double-minors. Those things always seem to come back to haunt them.

    The Ethan Moreau penalty was complete hogwash, but I’m glad they didn’t have a meltdown in response (besides giving up the power play goal.)

    I absolutely LOVED the Gagne goal. I think his acquisition was still the “sleeper” of the offseason. Despite how little he was talked about, he’s really delivered. He’s one of those “finishers” the Kings have been looking for, and he sure showed it with is moves this game.

    It was good to see Voynov back and bringing the same spark he did before, but I’m not sure I like Dewey and JJ as partners for the long term. Guess there really isn’t any solution for that, though. Any chance we can get a bag of pucks for Penner and his cap hit?

    [Reply]

  15. neil says:

    Its important that Lotki is having success on the wing…..now Penner can stay on the third line and we really can roll 4 lines.Penner was playing well when he got injured and with the new offense,Penner will benefit. Fraser has come back down to earth and Hunter is useless.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

    @neil, I agree. Penner looked pretty good on that 3rd line.

    [Reply]

    @KC23,

    Another all-star performance by Penner last night, I agree. If he keeps doing what he’s doing, we’re in good shape.

  16. DesertKing says:

    We need to send some props DL’s way:

    Acquired: Richards
    Acquired: Gagne
    Drafted: Voynov
    Signed: Willimas
    Signd: DD
    Signed: JJ
    Signed: Mitchell
    Signed: Scuderi

    Watching that charge by Williams where he didn’t pick up the puck at the blue line and faked everyone out with Scuds jumping up into theplay was a thing of beauty. It was oneof those smart plays that froze the Ducks defense and left them scrambling. Gagne is so smooth out there that it takes awhile to get use to watching him since he is like a stealth bomber. Richards never stops, is always focused, always in the right position and always making the right play. Quick is just sick. Fire TM (just snuck it into see if anyone notices :) )

    The PP looked good to start (Voynov’s move was great, and since we haveseen him do it before, it isn’t a fluke). Duringthe second halfof the game, it did seem to stagnate and look like it was going back to its earlier form, The fact that this followed the on-air interview with JK is probably coinicdental (anybody want to buy a bridge?).

    Overall great win, 1st place this morning and GKG!!!

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @DesertKing, That’s why I’m so hard on TM when things don’t work and he doesn’t have answers that make sense. DL has giving him the keys to the finals, as you’ve pointed out. They SHOULD be playing the way they’re playing now. they should be better, really, but at least now they appear to be getting there.

    [Reply]

    neil Reply:

    @DesertKing, The reason lots of fans wanted TM fired was the reasons you listed above…The Kings have talent….With a top notch defense and goalie…offensive players…depth…No reason to be on any long losing streaks.Also no reason not to be scoring more then two goals a game.Now the Kings have finally opened things up and we are winning..so TM deserves the credit now….

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @neil,
    Losing streaks happen to every team..look at the Capitals last year before the Winter classic? There’s just no way to avoid them when you play an 82 game schedule.

    I’m a huge TM fan, but i don’t think he deseves the credit nor the blame. the system’s been in place since training camp. It was just a matter of time before the guys would get comfortable playing with each other. It’s the talent on the ice more than the system.

    @nykingfan,

    I wish I could remember the blogger(s) who said it would take approximately 20 games for this team to gell. Whomever it was is beginning to look like a prophet because offense started to set at game 18 (IMHO). Keep it going boys!

    Scot Reply:

    @Zeley,

    I think it was Michael J.

    puck73 Reply:

    @DesertKing, Being at the game last night and watching the new system live is entertaining. Being there with the insiders takes the viewing experience to an even higher level, especially when the Kings play well, and win.
    From a viewing experience, it couldnt get much better then last night. When Kopi scored the go ahead goal, we went absolutely crazy, and so did that building! The adreneline rush was just unbelievable! It was like getting a mega shot of vitamin B.
    Anyway, cant wait to see a whole lotta you on Saturday, what an awesome win last night!

    [Reply]

    Resedakingsfan Reply:

    @DesertKing, It’s amazing what drafts, trades, and free agent signings can do. Look at last night’s game – 4 of the 5 goals were scored by players who didn’t play for the Kings last year (2-Richards, Slava, Gagne). People can say what they want about DL, but he’s done wonders to improve this team.

    - great play from Richards, Gagne and Vojnov, but also the rest of the team played well;
    - Kopi made the most important move of the night at the right time;
    - not sold on pairing DD & JJ, but not sure really how to figure out our D pairings, though I would leave Mitchel & Vojnov together;
    - still not sold on Lokti playing LW on the 2nd line, but agree to give hime more chance to impress;
    - put Penner on the 3rd line when he comes back from injury;
    - not play Moreau on the PP;
    - leave Richardson in the line up.

    Put Penner in Columbus, or Montreal, or New Jersey, or Florida, or…….

    @DesertKing, Penner and Amart to Columbus for Pahlsson and a pick? We still have depth on D in MAN and gets Penns off the roster. Not that I’ve totally given up on Penns, but I’ve always like Pahlsson’s game for the bottom 6… And according to the 4th period he’s being shopped.

    @outsider, I don’t think it is fair to put AL under a microscope this early. The play he made, with the delay carrying the puck out of the zone on the MR goal, was world class. He showed patience and waited for MR to get to a seam in the NZ and MR buried it on the backhand. Heady play.

    My post when Penner went out and VV and Lotki were in looked like this: Monday / 11/14/2011 / 3:02 PM – the day when the Kings turn a corner.

    @kingszzz, I think you’re over analyzing the Penner absence. Penner makes this team better even if he is not producing. He is still a threat to score goals and that plays into the defensive zone coverage of opposing teams. Sometimes a player does not produce but their presence can be beneficial to the over all scheme of things.

    @bonvivant1, did you really just say that?

    Zeley Reply:

    @kingszzz,

    Bonvivant really posted that, and I’ll even give it a +1. Of course a team can’t win without scoring, but it also takes a lot of non-scorers for that same team to win. It’s obvious Penner has become the whipping boy on this team, yet as long as he works hard and wears the crown (or homeplate) on his chest with pride, I will continue to support him. Not the right (popular) position to take, I know, but the correct one nonetheless. Remember what Mother used to say: “If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.” Even as crazed, jubilant, rabid fans, it seems people continue to pile on the abuse – even when he’s not in the game. Heaven help us all.

    @bonvivant1, ok, couple of things. Penner does not wear the jersey with pride as evidenced by his lazy, apathetic attitude he has shown towards his conditioning which, as DL pointed out, is “average”. We’re talking about a 4 Million Dollar player. Pride and commitment would be showing up in Elite shape. I don’t really understand why some people keep giving this guy chances. For God’s sake, this goes back to last year!! He’s a chump and does nothing for this team other than slug around the ice and hits people after the play. The facts don’t lie. There is more noticeable energy with him out of the lineup then in. And, you said it, a team can’t win without scoring. And, you get 0 points when you don’t win. I don’t get the man-love for Penner. He’s not a minor leaguer trying out for the team where shades of promise are what to look for. He has overstayed his welcome and I, for one (and I think many) am done watching the experiment.

    @bonvivant1,

    What???

    Well he is NOT scoring…NOT a defensive minded forward…NOT a physical presence…NOT a good passer…NOT an energy guy. So what is he contributing? Good ping pong player?

    @Cruiznblue & kingzzz,

    Once Penner gets back into the lineup, he will be coming into a style of play that fits him better. The adjustment period to the “system” with the new players (as many of us have believed would be needed) is over. It has solid footing now from top to bottom. If Penner doesn’t benefit, and produce more from this after a few games, then I may have to concur with you. As for now, I still believe he can contribute to this team success. I also believe that the guys in the room are pulling for him.

    @Forum Gold, The only way this team get 5 goals is if Anaheim plays 60 minutes without a goalie and we have 5 power plays. Becuase we can’t score 5 on 5. How many times have we scored more than 2 goals? Thankful Quick is a world class goalie or we would be 5-10-3. He has single handedly kept us in the top 8.
    We may win 3-2 at best. Please reread the 1st line.
    Dear OldKingsFan, My feeling we were going to score 5 goals was right on. This team has an edge that I have not seen in awhile thanks to our new players and our character players. Quick will steal us 2 points all season long but give this team a chance to gel and I think we are in for a fun ride. I did reread your first line. 5-3 KINGS GO KINGS GO!!!

    Rich – what were the circumstances that allowed for Bob and Foxy to travel all the way to Anaheim and call the game? Is it due to the lack of NBA games?

    Interesting stat (uh to me anyway)is that Richards is now in 4th place among current players in short-handed career goals with 24 and the Kings also have the player in 12th place among current players with 17 short-handed goals. I’m sure we all know who that would be. That’s right; Ethan Moreau
