The Kings are expected to go with the same lineup tonight, including Jonathan Quick in goal. There was no team morning skate this morning, because of the back-to-back games, but injured defenseman Alec Martinez did get on the ice for some conditioning skating. More notes and quotes to come…

wow…I’m kind of glad JQ is in there again, for a couple of reasons: 1) it gives him a chance to OWN the ducks in back-to-back (I say own, because I think he outplayed Hiller last night even though Hiller saw “more” shots) and 2) if the quacks manage to take this game I think it would really start to mess with JB’s psyche/confidence… just my take on the situation.

@LA_1968, I think you’re right that the Kings don’t seem to play with the same level of confidence with JB. They seem to get sloppier early on. Or if JB lets in an early goal, it seems to shake the confidence of the team such that they make mental errors that get them in more trouble. Although I AM surprised that JB isn’t in net tonight, but QUick didn’t have as busy a night as he usually does. He worked very hard in the 3rd and really focused on OT and SO. It will be an interesting game tonight! Go Kings Go!

@Dominick, I don’t know him personally, but from a human stand-point, you would have to imagine that JB is A) chomping at the bit to play, B) wondering why he’s only been able to win 1 in 4 chances, and then C) I would imagine the Ducks are going to come out like a team possessed, D) if they jumped on the Kings/JB early and often it would start to become a let-down game, and yeah I think that things like that would start to pile up on a person, regardless of how mentally strong they are… the whole

@Stuart, I think his character is strong. He’s lost games before, and he doesn’t seem to let it bother him too much. I know he’s chomping at the bit, but so is Whiskey. Just have to be there when called upon, and he’ll get his chances against some quality opponents soon enough. The same situation will be there even if he plays Nashville, and I think the reason the Kings chose Bernier is because those teams can’t destroy this guys confidence that easy. He has the makings of a true #1 someday, wether it’s here, or somewhere else.

@wavesinair, There’s a point where you have to play Bernier, though. The Kings have a back up goalie for a reason. He is on pace for 13 starts at this point. That means Quick would start 69 games. Waaaaaay too much. We saw how a more-rested Quick looked stronger in the playoffs last season.

wavesinair Reply:

@Carey,
I agree.
Quick can’t stay ‘hot’ for 69 games so just wait until he cools off a bit.
If we flip your own argument on it’s head, it still stays true:
“Thank God Murray’s going to give Quick more rest this season. We saw how well it worked against San Jose in the playoffs last year. Bravo, Terry.”
In other words, he was rested but the result was the same. And after all, that’s what counts…the scoreboard.
Once again, damned if he does, etc.
Tim Reply:
November 17th, 2011 at 12:05 pm
@Carey, I think most “on pace” stats are useless. I mean if someone has a point in each of the first three games of the season, he’s “on pace” for 246 goals…
Quick won’t start 69 games, or close to it.
That said, I do think Bernier needs to play. Kind of a double edge sword in that I don’t think Murray has much confidence in him right now, but how are you going to build confidence (on both TM and JB) without playing him?
Dominick Reply:
November 17th, 2011 at 12:05 pm
@Carey, Bernier will get his starts. All teams try to play the #1 in as many games as possible, then rest him as needed. Except for the Kings who have a #1 who can’t even start 5 games in a row. You won’t see Boston, Buffalo, or any other team with a decent #1 micro manage their goalies like that.
In my opinion Quick is ready, and in better condition then he was 2 years ago when he also participated in the olympics, and was distracted by the birth of his first child.

@Dominick, I don’t think playing him against Detroit would be a good idea. Aren’t we supposed to build his confidence? Bernier needs wins to do that. Throwing him against one of the hottest teams in the league right now might not be the best way to accomplish that. Besides, when the wings come to town, it’s never a “home-ice” advantage. Those scumbags outnumber us 2 to 1. EVERYONE GO TO THE GAME ON SATURDAY! I”m sick and tired of letting this band-wagon red wings fans roll through LA as if we’re playing in the worst major city in the US. That city, of course, being detroit. Be loudy, be rowdy, be drunk.
Dominick, if Bernier happens to play on Saturday and we win, that will do wonders for his confidence and will restore a lot of confidence in TM to play him. Under those circumstances (if that’s your reasoning) I can see your point, but it’s a bold move. Especially if we win tomorrow and start up a streak. :/

@ChiTownKingsFan, I think he’s confident enough, and he won’t care who he plays. Win, lose, or draw, he’ll be happy for the opportunity.
I think the “let’s protect Berniers feelings” thing has to end. He feels he’s a #1 already (as do many here on the blog), and the only way to grab it is to win when called upon, regardless of who you play.
Nobody worries about Quick losing, but argue that Bernier is the next step in the franchise. If he’s ready, then play him.

We would get SRO seats on the upper levels. There was a spot where you could lean on the rail and literally lean back to the beer counter without having to even move your feet. OC, the fans in Chicago certainly aren’t “cool” anymore. Ever since they won the Stanley Cup i’ve found the fans incredibly belligerent. I went to a game with a buddy of mine last year at the United Center and someone chucked a beer at his head. It’s hard to make it to the games in Chicago because they’ve raised ticket prices tremendously. Hard for a college kid to get out there. It doesn’t keep me from going though! this whole “Trent Hunter is a scorer” thing is a myth. The guy scored a bunch of goals for some mediocre Islander teams, getting first line minutes, playing a ton on special teams. In 2003-04 he was a ROOKIE, and LED the team in scoring, with brilliant scorers like Oleg Kvasha, Mark Parrish and Marius Czerkawski (cue: sarcasm) right behind him. His production has gone down steadily as more talented players became prominent on that team. His upside days are behind him. Now, he’s hanging on by a thread and I wouldn’t expect him to find his “touch” once his King days are over.

This is the heart of your argument…and it’s totally wrong.
If you take his last 4 seasons with the Isles, where his goal totals were down, he still averaged a goal every 5.7 games…which is the exact same as his overall career average. This stat hold true for his assists as well!
So while there may be some validity to the kind of teams the Islanders have had since 2002, the fact remains he has been a consistent NHL scorer regardless of who was on those teams.
I think it’s clear his career has been hampered by injuries, not lack of talent.

TM doesn’t start Quick after 3 shutouts in a row cause he told Bernier he would start. That Bernier needed to stay sharp.
Now, in a back to back situation, perfect time to give Bernier the call, he’s going to stay with Quick. So glad Murray knows what he’s doing…oh wait.

Hail Kings Fans from Albany NY;
The first two periods last night were the best the Kings have looked in some time. The game roster, the lines, the pairs, the goalie, were great for the first two periods. Everything “clicked” in each zone. This game day roster needs to stay intact. The 5 on 5 scoring will come with the same effort game to game.
Parse, Penner, Richardson, and Martinez need to be closely evaluated as to their futures with the team. Westgarth has the benefit of being in a special role and is needed on occasion. I would keep Richardson as the spare forward with Westgarth.
The new defensive “pairs” are much better now. Voynov is better with Mitchell as a pair than Martinez was with Greene. Greene needs Scuds as a steady defensive partner verses Martinez. JJ and DD are ready to mature together. Who do you keep, Davis D or Martinez?? I vote for Davis D. Martinez has some trade value. I don’t know what to do with Oarse or Penner.
The Russian kids are very special. They are ready to provide much needed skill and skating ability to complement the other players.
While my views may seem somewhat extreme at this time, I believe they are the best for the immediate future of the Kings.
I would try Moreau, Stoll, and Hunter together on the third line and expect improved point production as a result. All three are former 20 goal scorers. Clifford slips back to the 4th line.
Is this game roster the real result of DLs 6 year plan??? It looks like it to me!!
Comments??

@Martin Hoffmann, I think you are mostly right about the team. I think Richardson is getting clumped into the wrong group. Parse has been more injured than not; Penner is slower than molasses, Martinez took a step back this year (but then again so did DD last year). With the league moving away from all the fighting….I think Westy has limited value…and Cliffy can handle it..and gives you more upside to boot. I think Moreau and Hunter aren’t bad, but other than their size and experience…I think the Kings need to develop Lokti and Voynov more than they need gray hair in the locker room, at this juncture. These young guys give you speed…Drewiske has been a good 7th Dman, but he’s so rarely used, that he’s superfluous and if he is being kept because of potential injuries…than why are we going with Voynov before him…because Voynov is better. Hence–time to let go of Drewiske. Maybe he has some trade value…to the Ducks or some other D needy team. Penner to me, is a lost cause.. We keep wanting him to turn around his game, so we can all feel better about what we gave us to get him…but he’s like that stock we bought at a high price…that we hold onto even when it keeps dropping because in the past it was SOOO much better. But if he’s so fabulous, why is it no one is asking to get him in a trade? I think we put him on waivers..and see who takes him. Time for DL to eat the deal, for better or worse…and move on. If he still takes up cap space so be it…but you can bring up a young guy and get him some experience.

@Martin Hoffmann, Key phrase “immediate future of the Kings”. I believe realistically the Kings won’t make a serious run till 2013-14 season.

I’ve given up trying to figure out our goaltending strategy other that TM has good days and bad days on his Meds.
Playing 10-20 games in a season hardly keeps our backup tender in condition to play at the NHL level. In the event of an Injury or a losing streak you now have to give up multiple games just trying to get back into shape. In 2010-2011 2 of the 5 best rated tenders Thomas(BOS) and Luongo(VAN) only played in 57 and 60 games respectively, So i guess JQ is going to exceed their performance and averages by himself? TM himself said he played Q too much last year, yet we are still on track to exceed last years numbers again? Either that or he will play the life out of JQ and then expect the Cold tender JB to just step up and get it done? It usually doesn’t work that way.
The same applies to DD2 and Hunter and Richardson and any other “healthy Scratches” they don’t play on a regular basis. I am thrilled to see Voynov and Lotki (our russian Connection) coming to play with us, but since they are the only waiver exempt folks left to move back and forth they will have to come and go with the injury report and we still have a player management issue with the healthy scratches every night.
Glad we won last night hope for good things tonight and the rest of our season.

The LA Kings will start with Bernier at Anaheim and then Quick will start at St. Louis because Quick was tired last Night from Regulation with a Overtime and a Shootout and Quick feels really tired can Terry Murray to use Bernier to start in shape at Anaheim

@Adam M, Terry Murray has officially become an indecisive, waffling goofball. NOW he wants to run Quick out there all the time, back to back after to shootout. what happened to keeping the back up sharp? oh ya, that didn’t work out so well. Daang it Murray, stick to a good plan….rest Quick now and then, as the schedule and situation dictate. not on a whim or prayer.

My fellow Kings fans:
Just spoke to a friend of mine here behind the Orange curtain who grew up with the former MDoA and now former stanley Cup Champion Ducks. We usually don’t talk on game day and certain do not entertain in game chatter out of respect for our friendship. However he just informed me that he heard our fans chanting “VERTIGO VERTIGO VERTIGO” as Hiller was standing on his head in route to stealing a point from us. Is this true? Have we sunk that low? If that’s true everyone of you who opened your mouth should be ashamed of yourselves. Disgusting if you ask me. It’s hard enough to defend our boys against years of futility and the angst of them having beat us to the cup but to have to defend our fan base for something like that? Classless.

@Harrison Merkin, Sorry, at the game, heard no mention of Vertigo in the 300′s Everyone was chanting Hiller but no Vertigo. I think you have a quakcer that is flying upside down behind the orange curtain.

@Roger Rabbit, He’s a sensitive one to be sure and down right nasty in his assessment of the Kings and their fans but I trust him implicitly. Not accusing. simply stating that if our fans whether they be many or few went that route I for one am disappointed. I also heard U2′s Vertigo playing during a stoppage and didn’t give it much thought. I would hope that wasn’t intentional. GKG

@Harrison Merkin,
i had a case of vertigo a few years back…and it stayed with me for about a six month period…it’s an awful condition to go through…you feel sick all the time and it’s very hard to do almost anything routinely…
i agree…although anything seems to be fair game in professional sports these days, mocking a player’s health issues should be off limits…

@Harrison Merkin,
i’m fine today, thanks for asking…
i got vertigo from taking pain medication on a long flight…by the time we landed, i thought we were still flying at 36,000 feet…and that feeling stayed with me for months until it slowly faded away and i started gaining my equilibrium and balance back…
like WAVES said below, bad apples everywhere – no different here in hollyhobbywood…

@Harrison Merkin,
The (sad) reality is there are classless fans in every arena in hockey. Not that you shouldn’t condemn it. By all means, do so. Just understand that it’s something that will never change.

@wavesinair, Believe me. I know. I’ve been one. I threw a mighty tantrum during last years melt down against the Sharks. I felt like such a douche that I came here to apologize of my own accord. I guess in all honesty if I didn’t have to defend against it to a Ducks fan I probably wouldn’t be as bothered. Still not cool but you get me. I despise the Ducks and their fans [on game day] without prejudice. 8 to 80. I just can’t abide by something like that. The one thing I tend to notice is that the bulk of messages on these boards submitted by Kings fans are far more witty and intelligent than anything I read from Ducks fans. Save for the obligatory Duck soup/al a orange`/sauce comments. Sorry gang…those are too easy. I like to think that we’re better than that. That said, what’s say we put together a full 60 and take our 2 pts! GKG!

So let me get this straight, TM sits Quick after recording three consecutive shutouts (none of them were back to back), but now plays him in back to back games. Isn’t that what your suppose to do when you have a good, capable back up. I don’t get this guy. Bernier needs to start these games so Quick doesn’t burn out and so he can get his value up in case we need to make a trade for a top six winger, preferrably a LW to replace Penner.
[Reply]
Love the fact Penner is out……had to do it TSN Ontario just mentioned he was injured.

Murry needs to play bernier he has a good record against the ducks u have to play him hes not a back up goalie

Far as Quick in goal I have no comment either way. Just don’t think I have a good enough feel for the goalie position to know what makes sense and what doesn’t. As far as burning out Quick like two years ago and doubt it. That was the Olympic year and having his kid in there about the same time. Lot more into his burn out at the end of the year than just how many games he played I would think.
As far as keeping Bernier ready … that really isn’t the goal. The goal is to win hockey games, not worry about “maybe’s” or “what if’s”. Quick has no real history of losing games to injury that I am know of.

I just hope that Quick is going to be well enough for the afternoon game Saturday against the Red Wings.
