Wednesday skate update

No surprises or changes coming out of this morning’s skate. Dustin Penner once again skated in a yellow no-contact jersey, but his return does not appear to be imminent. Of the three injured players, it would seem that Alec Martinez is the closest to a return, but he is not yet back on the ice. Scott Parse’s short-term prognosis does not seem encouraging. More on this, and other notes and quotes, to come…

    @Cruiznblue,

    This is Voynov’s best chance to earn a spot this year, although I still don’t think it’s going to happen.

    Unless Lokti stats tearing it up he’ll be going back to Manchester as soon as Penner is healthy.

    @AZ King,

    Interesting. Just got an email from Lisa Dillman of the LA Times. She had reported that Lokti was recalled from the Ontario Reign of the ECHL. I pointed out to her that he was coming from Manchester. She said no, for salary cap reasons he’s officially in the ECHL and that’s where the Kings said he was recalled from in their press release.

    Some guys are in the right place at the right time catching all the breaks, then there’s Parse. Unfortunate for him.

    @wavesinair, Yeah, horrible news. I think he’s a good fit as the LW for Richards and Brown. Hopefully the prognosis gets better.

    You just gotta shake your head at the bad luck this kid has. Really unfortunate for someone with a lot of potential.

    @wavesinair,

    I really feel sorry for this kid. Seems like he’s got the right attitude and work ethic. Unfortunately, that cannot overcome the types of injuries he is suffering from.

    Remember how the regular season ended last year? The rivalry games with the Ducks are important and we need to win these games and get inside their heads.

    @40YearKingsFan, two painful losses last year, but Kings were also missing Kopitar and Williams.

    I’m a little nervous about tonights game. We didnt fair to well against the Ducks farm team in Pre-season. Im hoping it was the lack of chemistry on our part.

    Very big back to back games here.
    I’m rooting as hard for Loki and VV as anyone else, but I’m not comfortable having 2 rookies playing such prominent roles when your team is trying to compete for the cup.
    I understand how little Penner has accomplished since he’s been here,but it’s something about veteran presence that eases the mind. You don’t know how the kids will react and how they’ll handle the pressure that’s going to be put on them, which will be great considering they’re top 6 and top 4 groupings.
    We’re well past the days of allowing kids to come in and get comfortable. We need instant results and anything short of that is basically Penner without the experience.
    I guess this would have to be considered short term moves while Penner and Martinez recover, but it still gives me a bit of angst when the games have as much meaning as they do now.

    It’ll be interesting to see how they react to the presure and hopefully they do their jobs as we all hope they will.
    Go Kings!

    @nykingfan,

    Great points. I’ve said it before, if the fate of this team hangs on the performance of a couple of 21 year old rookies we are in serious trouble.

    Shotongoal Reply:

    @nykingfan, I think the apprehension is warranted, but I also look at this like when DET, COL, CAL (back in the day) would bring young players up and they performed, and then those players became fixtures later for successful teams. I kind of look at it as injecting some youthful spirit into the lineup. Besides Voynov is READY!!

    I was looking up some stats today, and found something interesting about the scoring issues so far this year.

    This year so far, the Kings sit at 28th in the league with only 8 goals in the first period. Interestingly, they are actually 3rd in the league with 19 goals in the 2nd period. Then, they drop off back down to 26th in the league with 12 goals in the 3rd.

    This seems to show that the Kings are starting games by sitting back more than most teams, and don’t get it in gear till the 2nd period. Then for whatever reason, revert to sitting back in the 3rd.

    Just some food for thought.

    loskingpride Reply:

    @PP Anybody?, Can’t say much for the first period sit back but aren’t the Kings something like 63-0-3 when leading after 2 periods? That would explain the third period numbers.

    PP Anybody? Reply:

    @loskingpride, Well, it’s pretty common for most teams in the NHL to win after leading two periods. Most of the teams this year that are in the top ten, like Boston, Pittsburgh, Rangers, Philly, all seem to be top ten leading in 3rd period goals though. So they seem to be winning buy pouring it on later, not by hanging on to a lead and sitting back.

    loskingpride Reply:

    @PP Anybody?, When you have offensive minded teams then yes I can see why the teams you mentioned would be piling on goals, but lets be honest, with how the Kings are with defense it’s always seems to be a dig into the trenches mentality heading into the third no matter what the situation is.
