After today’s practice, Terry Murray indicated that Alec Martinez will be out of the lineup for a while and probably will be placed on injured reserve shortly. Murray said that decision is in management’s hands, but that Martinez has experienced swelling and discomfort since the end of Saturday’s game. Murray said Slava Voynov would “probably” be the player to get a call-up from Manchester. Martinez is officially listed with an upper-body injury. More notes and quotes from practice to come…

I know everyone is excited to see Lokti and VV brought up to replace the injured, but can we all agree now that maybe keeping them in Manchester (as players that can be brought up and down without penalty) instead of throwing other players on waivers (drewiskie and martinez) or trading guys like martinez was the best plan of action? This is hockey. injuries occur and it’s short sighted to look at your NHL roster and think that the “team” ends there.
I’m elated we have NHL ready guys to step in and replace the injured.

Dominick Reply:

@Stagger, With DD back, and JJ playing well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see TM juggle. Mitchell makes sense because they already have some chemistry, but Mitchell plays DD, and JJ minutes, and I doubt Green can play in those matchups consistantly (I’m not knocking Green at all). VV will get 16 to 18 minutes, which would put him right with Green. So Murray will mix and match most likely.

Interesting you say, “If the Kings player is in the wrong, Foxy will be the first to point out that he agrees with the officials.”
I actually disagree. And while I’m a fan of Fox and I believe he is fair and not a homer (both positive things) I do believe he hedges his criticisms, especially if it’s a Kings player. He hems and haws and says maybe or kinda or not sure when it’s obvious and clear.
He’s definitely not the first to point out that stuff. He usually rides the fence until he talks himself into choosing a side. Granted, he isn’t wishy washy all the time, but there’s a politician aspect to his color commentary that I wish was less pronounced.
[Reply]
Dominick Reply:

@wavesinair,
To some degree. I have seen plenty of instances where he accuses players of going down easy and trying to sell a call. Even with the Richardson fight with Teemu last season, he pointed out that little Richie threw an elbow and he didn’t blame Teemu one bit.
I’ve come to expect stuff like that, and even though he’s a Kings announcer, he doesn’t always call it in the Kings favor, and when he doesn’t it usually makes sense.
RogiesBackUp Reply:

I’m glad these kids are getting a chance to play. 10-15 games will really prepare them for full time status next year.
I’d much rather see Lokti playing center then wing, but I think everyone saying that Lokti is horrible on the wing shows how prone fans are to exaggeration. Maybe instead of saying he looked bad on wing and better at center, we can just say that in his first six NHL games he really looked like he was playing his first six NHL games.
What rookie doesn’t look lost out there from time to time? It’s safe to say that Lokti looked better and more confident with the puck as games went along – which also happened to correspond to his position change.
He could have just as easily played center his first six games and looked horrible and moved over to left wing and looked a whole lot better his next six games. And we would now all be arguing that he needs to play wing because he looked lost in his first few games in the NHL.
Besides, that was a long time ago in his development. I think we should all wipe our memories clean of those games – and attempt to evaluate him from scratch. I want to see him play center. I want to see him play LW. I want see how strong he is on the puck and how his faceoffs are doing. Because at this point, we don’t have to much information to work with.
Just because you look lost your first 6 NHL, doesn’t mean you aren’t a dynamic, multi-faceted player.

@RogiesBackUp, Again, in my opinion, Bylsma’s got a real good system. If you like a “system” that’s produced a 2-7 in the last 9 games, then great. I personally don’t care what the system is if the result was flip flopped to 7-2. I would be happy with Willie Mitchell at Center and Kevin Westgarth in goal if the Kings were 7-2.

@Poorman, To that I respond that it’s 50% Management/Coaching and 50% players. You can’t do anything about Kopitar getting hurt and missing the last part of the season and the playoffs. You do have more control over, for example, the swing game in LA (game 3, I believe it was), where the Kings lost a big lead and lost the game and consequently the series. To me, the players have as much responsibility on the ice as the coach/gm do.
Another example was last Thursday’s loss to Vancouver. I’m quite certain the coach did not have his players taking dumb penalties early in the game. And I’m 100% certain it was not Terry Murray’s fault that Drew Doughty decided to practice some of his best cross-checks to Ryan Kessler while killing a major penalty. Who’s fault is that?
I am not looking at the amount on his contract, but Drew Doughty has not been playing at an acceptable level given his skills and status as a ‘breakthrough, franchise defenseman”.
To infer that the players are not at fault in some capacity is incorrect.
Get rid of Penner and keep Lotiki

@RogiesBackUp, His stock is low as is his confidence and his health. It’s early in the season. Don’t get rid of him just to get rid of him. You wouldn’t get much for him without a loss, anyways. Later down the road, he may come in handy. You just never know. But for now? Too early to panic. Way too early…
