Wednesday “practice” update; lineup changes

Only last night’s scratched players were on the ice this morning because, as the Kings prepare for a third game in four days, Terry Murray opted for off-ice workouts today instead of on-ice practice.

As noted earlier, the Kings will make a couple lineup moves tomorrow. With Scott Parse going on injured reserve, Colin Fraser will be activated and go into the lineup as the fourth-line center. Trent Hunter will also play, as the third-line right winger next to Jarret Stoll. Murray said he had not yet decided on exact line combinations or who will come out of the lineup. Jonathan Quick will start in goal. More notes and quotes to come…

    @Stop the Puck, Unless you actually believed Murray when he said he’d go with the “hot hand”, it probably has something to do with Quick being our #1 goalie?

    [Reply]

    TRuskowski Reply:

    @KingSurfer, Neither one is hot. Bernier has yet to give up less than three goals. So go with the guy with the better record/goals against average..

    Quick is better – that’s a pretty good reason.

    [Reply]

    SLIM Reply:

    @simonsez,
    Not sure that we can make a fair comparison yet…
    Quick was just average in previous 5 games…
    He game up 3 goals consistently…
    We see more of Quick and therefore ..it’s hard to really judge..
    Quick would get us more in return cause he has proven himself…
    Bernier hasn’t been given the same chance to prove himself…
    I like both just trying to be fair…Quick get too much adoration from certain fans..

    JD Reply:

    @SLIM, in the end players are judgeed by how they do in the playoffs, quick has just been average, or below average in his playoff career

    @Lake Forest,

    I have no opinion of him, in reality. I’ve never seen him play, and if Ryan Smyth didn’t want to be here, that’s got nothing to do with Fraser, and he’s also not the one who deceived the Kings when they made that trade. That’s on Steve Tambellini.

  7. Winger23 says:

    I hope Fraser plays well, but I don’t expect him to get more than 3-5 minutes of ice time. It’s such a waste. Bring up Lokti to center the third line, move stoll over to wing, and you still have Lewis to center the 4th line. I guess they still want a checking team instead of being able to roll 4 lines that could actually score.

    wavesinair Reply:

    @Dominick,

    Nice! Lewis needs to get more assertive. Maybe in the end he’ll be a winger as you indicated. I’d just like to see him find that grit needed on the 4th line. I was hoping it would develop coming out of camp, but I just don’t see it. Either that, or start finishing and move to the 3rd line…

  9. Brownkingsfan says:

    Murray, PLEASE leave the too two lines alone! I realize with injuries you have to make a couple small changes, but obviously there was a little chemistry flowing last night and it will get better the more the lines play together. Maybe sit Moureau if Hunter must play. Good luck to Fraser! GO KINGS GO!

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

    @Brownkingsfan, I can’t imagine that this little shifting will have any effect on the top 2 lines… I’m thinking EM will sit one or two out…

    [Reply]

    @Stuart, I’m thinking Lewis will sit a few. EM got some good chances last night and seems to be stirring a lot more up.

    bmova Reply:

    @Bradapiller, I don’t really see what EM has done to say he deserves to be the third or fourth line LW. I’d rather see Richie-Stoll-Hunter and Clifford-Fraser-Lewis.

    Let’s see if Fraser or Hunter can do anything. If not, bring up Loktionov and let the kid play. May as well bring Voynov back as well so they can both score goals and celebrate in Russian…

    @dcaps55, Not sure if Hunter is the wright pick for this game. He is too slow. Loktionov should be on the roster and playing regular shift as the 3d line center.

    KingTrojan Reply:

    @dcaps55, I like what I’ve seen from Moreau. He’s played better than Clifford. Sit Clifford for a game.

    [Reply]

    bmova Reply:

    @dcaps55, Hunter is not a LW, he plays RW. I don’t think it’s right to throw players in positions they’re not used to playing; especially one who has been a scratch the last few days.

  15. 812 says:

    The way I see it, we should really be playing Bernier against Vancouver. He’s not as sharp as he could be probably because of his limited game experience so far this season, although I don’t pretend he’s shown stellar netminding so far. 3GA is nothing to cheer about but it’s better than his GAA heretofore. The coach should show his confidence in our backup by rewarding Bernier with another go, for the win and because he improved from his last start. It’s also good mojo among the team to play in front of a goalie who just helped us snap a 5-game skid. Just my two shekels.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @812, That would mean 6 days before Quick starts, and too much time to let rust creep into his game.

    [Reply]

    812 Reply:

    @Dominick, With regular practice, ample play so far this season, and his level of skill rust is the last thing I’d worry about with Quick. Ride the winning goalie anyway, as Murray already suggested he would do.

    [Reply]

    Deke'r Reply:

    @812, …..which has allready been abandoned…

    Dominick Reply:

    @812, When Bernier is at the top of the league then come talk to me. Currently Quick is, and your hot hand theory makes no sense because Quick had 3 strait shut outs when Murray sat him. Bernier hasn’t even had a game where he’s let in less than 3 goals in yet.

    Pleeeeeeaaaase! Your theory makes no sense.

    812 Reply:

    @Dominick, Good grief, you take things way too personally. I gave an OPINION, not a theory. Take a pill and maybe it’ll help you with your melodrama problem. This is not a knock on Quick – re-read my post and perhaps you’ll get that.

    The fact is Bernier won and he’s showing improvement. Quick is professional enough to handle missing a game because the other goaltender helped us pull out of a major slump. If Murray suggested he’s going to play with the winning goaltender, and I think that’s a good idea. And, the team would benefit from playing in front of him for a while. It’s a far better idea – IN MY OPINION – than relying on some forlorn ideological attachment to a given goaltender being #1.

    danny Reply:

    @Dominick, so when bernier plays and he looks a little rusty for not playing for 2 weeks its a crime but if quick doesnt play for 6 days he will get to rusty?

    @812,
    Don’t get me wrong! I love Bernier, but if I’ve learned anything after 30 years of watching subpar Los Angeles Kings goaltending, that is,

    When you get a franchise goalie, hold on to him, because one doesn’t come around very often. And we have 2.

    This is not the same Vancouver team as last year. Luongo looks horrible and the Kesler line is struggling. They no longer have Torres on their third line. In short their not as deep as before. Our first line has improved a lot, we got last change. I like our chances.

    [Reply]

    ziggy Reply:

    @KC23, agreed. I saw them last week when I was up in Minneapolis, and they were outplayed in all facets of the game by the Wild. The lackluster defense allowed multiple odd-man rushes, and 2 or 3 breakaways, plus outshot something like 45-25. They lost 5-1, and none of the five goals were really Schneider’s fault.
