Dustin Penner’s postgame thoughts…
(on his first multi-point game…)
PENNER: “Whatever I was in, I’m glad I’m out of it now. It’s like `Fight Club.’ What’s the first rule? You don’t talk about it. [smiles] It’s something that you knew was there, but you didn’t want to acknowledge. It wasn’t for lack of trying, and doing everything outside of the game to get ready. There were a few injuries that didn’t help me, and maybe got inside my head, but now everything is feeling great.’’
(on overcoming his early injuries…)
PENNER: “It’s not so much physically, because I put the work in in the summer, but I think it’s just mentally.’’
(on getting the win…)
PENNER: “Especially considering what happened the last couple games at home, it was great to get this one out of the way and break that mental block we had.’’
(on the team scoring four goals…)
PENNER: “The first two periods, we had a lot of shots on net, we threw everything at the net, and then the penalty trouble kind of took that away from us, and that tends to happen when you’re up two goals. There’s a lot of stuff that we can take away that’s positive from this game.’’
I think in fight club, the reality was that dude was punching himself in the face lol

Easy, Penner… you’re not out of the woods yet. You got a secondary assist and Gagne deflected a shot that would have hit Linbak in the logo.
Sure, your last two games have been much better, but it’s like being valedictorian at summer school.
Put a few in the net before you declare the “all clear,” would ya.

@Bama Kings,
His second assist I believe was the play where he lifted the guys stick, stripped him of the Puck and started us flying the other way. It was a critical play leading to the goal.

I hope we see Dustin allowed to play his game that he is used to playing, and in better shape ta boot. TM has a tendency to strangle alot of goal scorers, hopefully tonite was a sign of change from TM and the coaching staff.

Dustin Penner’s “game” wasn’t enough. The GM and coaches have been pushing hard for more and finally he is responding with results. Credit to Penner himself for breaking the funk. This is the guy we traded for.

@KC23,
Give me a break people. He got two very lucky assists. He got a secondary on a turn over that Fox said they were going to end up giving to someone else and then Gagne deflected a shot that would have hit the goalie right in the crest. He has definitely been playing better the past two games but far from “adapted and overcame”. I can guarantee TM didn’t change his entire coaching system and that is why Penner got two assists.
When he puts a couple in the net consistently than maybe he will have broken the slump. Baby steps.

@RobSD, be fair, that shot was “Maybe” a glove save, goalie was well extended to get his glove on it and gagnejust changed the speed enough to be sure he didn’t glove it. His other shots last night also had much more zip to them. Most Kings fans are actually rooting for him to succeed. Give t a try.

@RobSD,
he created the turnover. He was in perfect position when he got the shot.
Just because he sucked last year and most /f this year doesn’t mean you can’t find the good plays he makes, or evaluate his performance game by game. He played good tonight.

@Csaba Bhody, The worst thing I heard at the game – Penner sees Nashville get the puck, speeds up the ice (yes, speeds) & gets in front of the guy, gets the puck back, gets pressure from two Predators, gets stripped of the puck, keeps fighting, gets the puck back & gets it out of the zone & deep into the Predators zone while linemates are changing. As he turns back to change, someone in the 100′s that I can hear in the 300′s yells ‘Get off the ice Penner!’. Really? Were you watching the play?
Penner has put a lot more effort into his game lately. It’s too bad that some fans are too jaded to let him redeem himself.

give Pens a break, look at his overall game. He’s probably gripping his stick too tight because he knows that he can’t make a mistake or he will hear about it from idiots. Positive goes a long way.

they need to get rid of the postgame stuff and shoot straight into the around the league news and then kings talk. i dont need a recep of the game i just spent 3 hours watching. 10 years ago it used to start much earlier, now i am just about home and get to hear maybe one question (and i also live in orange county). and what’s with daryl taking 30 mins to get from locker room to the booth? who do we talk to to get the kings talk schedule changed? sounds like others agree that we want it to start sooner.

@chris, I totally agree about the long recap. 99% of the people listening are either coming from the game or listened to it on the radio. An update from around the league and a post game interview or two is all we really need.
The background noise makes the post game show unbearable. Its even worse trying to hear a caller. Most of the people in my section have said they are no longer tuning in. It doesn’t matter how cool a new location is if it costs you listeners. Bad move by the broadcast team on this one.

I’m not gonna go crazy here or anything of the like, but I respect this guy for the simple fact that he’s shown “try” this season. Is he in shape to where he should be? No. Is he performing where he should be? No. BUT Is he trying? *&(*^*&%&%(&)(&(&%*I%(%(*&^(* (<— lots of inadmissible words) Yes.
As fans we demand perfection, and/or close to… but sometimes we need to step back as humans and adjust our initial beliefs. For me, Penner is a trial of fan vs. human.. you want to root for the guy internally, so do it.

@kingsxstevenxkings, I totally agree. I understand the frustration and the criticism, but I like Penner and I’m pulling for him. When a big guy is off his game or playing through injuries they often appear lazy or lacking in effort. I don’t think either one are the case with Penner. He’s never been a quick guy or a fast skater, but he can score goals and I haven’t seen him give up on a play this year. Whether or not he’ll find his rhythm as a King is anybody’s guess, but if he does the Kings are a legitimate contender and if he doesn’t we’re not that much better than we were last year. Penner is the X factor, and yeah, I’m rooting for him!

Getting better each game. I think he’s the only player trying to take the puck strong to the front of the net. I know we’re still a dump and chase team, but…

That wasn’t just a good game from Penns, it was a GREAT game. The guy was INVOLVED. He was forcing turnovers in our D zone, clearing space in the neutral zone, and creating one opportunity after the next in our O zone. When a guy that size drives to the net, the opposing D reacts by instinct, which creates space, opens passing lanes, and further screens the goalie. We need that kind of play from Penner each and every game.
[Reply]
KC23 Reply:
November 9th, 2011 at 7:51 am
@Ron Reynolds, Good post. You see Kopitar using that same size to his advantage all the time creating space for himself. The D knows that they need to be square to a guy that size or he’ll power past him. Just keep the feet moving towards the net and make the D-man commit.
[Reply]
I love this guy! I watched him score several awesome goals in training camp. I think he’s such a big guy that that his reactions don’t look that quick but given time and lots of encouragement, I think he is a good fit for the Kings. He brings his “big guy” size which we need and with the guys and “Fans” behind him, I believe he can be the player he was in Anaheim and in Edmonton again. Let’s get behind this guy as fans. Can you just imagine what this team can be with the addition of a scoring Pens. I know LA fans have waited a long time for the Kings to be contenders again, just hold on a little bit longer and with luck turning our way, this team will make it.
On a side note…the Refs were awful last night at the Nashville game!
[Reply]
Great to see Penner smiling out there too! Nice to see some progress. Sure, he may still give up the puck with a bad or too quick of a pass, but he’s making progress which we need badly!

When Doughty got leveled 2 minutes into the Flyer game on Oct. 15th, Dustin Penner, without any hesitation, stepped in to support his fallen teammate. That spoke volumes to his teammates, coaches, and Kings’ management. Thursday night should be fun. Go Kings!
