The NHL announced today — official news release here — that Kings winger Ethan Moreau was fined $2,500 for his hit on Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz last night. Moreau got a two-minute boarding penalty for the hit. The fine is the maximum allowed, and the money goes to the NHL Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund
Luckily no suspension.

It was because of all those Pittsburghers who have moved out here, and by Pittsburgher, I mean one who’s never been to that city in their life but latched on to the team because it became en vogue when they won the Cup.
That’s like asking why there are so many Red Sox fans at Angels games… because there are many people in Southern California who like to claim another city because it makes them seem more “real.”

Yep, it’s embarrassing all right, to watch the game on TV and most cheer for the opposition…..goes to show that most that go to Kings games are just there to be seen and it’s a night out where they can spend up to $400 or so bucks and be blase. It is the history of the Kings to have the quietest and most boring fans in the league. No one gets excited, no one gets rowdy…..I know it’s not Philadelphia or Rangers but gee whiz, how about going crazy at the games and make my hair stand up when watching the games on tv (sorry, can’t afford to pay the ridiculous ticket and parking prices, so have to watch all 81 Kings games on TV for free….almost).

Everyone complaining about people like me wanting TM fired and believe that he needs more time should take a look at what just happened in St. Louis. They just fired their coach. Their record? Similar to ours. St. Louis is 6-7, we are 6-4-3. Same number of losses, but 3 of ours have been in O.T./shootout. Plus we have much higher expectations then St. Louis has. Very interesting. Ken Hitchcock is taken now. Something to think about.

@Brownkingsfan, There’s not one great coach out there because if they were great they would be coaching right now. I think if TM gets fired, John Stevens would be the guy to takeover for him. I don’t know enough about what type of coach John Stevens is to say anything about him. I do know that he’s done a teriffic job with the Kings Penalty Killing unit. As well as with the defenseman. But as we all know, the Kings problem is offense, not defense. If he comes in with the same type of dump and chase, cycle along the boards system, I don’t see the point of hiring him. The Kings need a coach that will open things up offensively and bring in a new puck possesion type of system that fits the skill level that this team has.
That’s been the reason why our offense is worse this year then last year. Last year’s team was big, slow, and not highely skilled, which fits well with a grind it out type system. This years team is highly skilled and not very physical among the top 6 forwards, thus it has struggled in this system.

@CB14, I’m not into this retread thing (if the Kings go the route of letting go of TM, and I don’t think they are for a while). Hitch has the pedigree, but look at Bylsma and his success, Boucher and even Glutz-something in Dallas. Takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there, as a GM, and give these newbies the chance to take over. A lot have done well. Some haven’t worked, ie. Richards was just the wrong guy coming in after Lemaire (people calling for an offensive coach after TM-take heed), glad DeBoer got another gig after FLA debacle. @Dominick, Can you help me understand specifically, what is different about TM’s system from that of other teams. I have read some of your analytic posts so I think you can sort this out for me. It seems that fair amount teams at least in theory want to play a defensive style.
[Reply]
Dominick Reply:

@Cry Baby,
This won’t be easy to put into a few words, so bare with me, and I’ll do my best to explain the basics, and give the benefits, and disadvantages.
I think it’s where the Kings attack from. There’s 2 different types of teams. If you seperate the attacking zone into 3 sections using the faceoff dots, you have from the boards to the 1rst face off dot being 1 zone on either side of the goalie (dot to boards). Then you have the space in between the dots being the other zone in the middle of the ice (dot to dot).
Ultimately both try to get the puck to the middle for shots, but where they focus their cycling is the difference.
DOT TO BOARDS (management teams)
If your cycling along the boards then you can slow the pace down by grinding the other team into submission, force them into mistakes, and manage the possesion time. The focus is to even out the playing field by forcing the other team to out muscle you along the boards (boston won a cup by doing exactly that to Vancouver, and Vancouver took a beating in the finals because they were more talented, but not as strong physically). Most passing is north/south along the boards, and shots are designed to give players a chance to crash the net..
DOT TO DOT (possesion teams)
If you attack between the dots, then your players have to utilize more 1 on 1 skills, and cycling is down the middle whenever possible. Every thing is geard towards getting the golie to move from 1 side to the other. Passing is more east/west with shots designed to give the shooter the most open net possible. The play is faster paced, and the players have to create more then just grinding it out. They have to use more give and go’s and think for themselves.
The Kings are a management team, and play “dot to boards” at all times. The reason fans have demanded TM open up things up is because they spend most of the game slowing it down offensively, and defensively along the boards “boring hockey”. We have the line up to play a more skilled game, but everything is controlled, and dummied down. TM is afraid of turnovers from passes in the middle of the ice, so everything is geared towards the boards where it is safe instead of letting them attack down the middle..

Also, Eddie Olzcyk came down from the booth to coach the Penguins a few years ago. I had never even considered the idea of Jim Fox behind the bench until the past few weeks.. I highly doubt he would be interested, I think he enjoys where he is next to Bob. Also, I don’t think he has much coaching experience, at least not that I’m aware of. But, I’m with you, I don’t think it would matter, I think Foxy would make a great coach. I honestly think he knows the players better than TM does.

@Scot, Just observing to what he has been saying these last couple of weeks about different things happening on the ice and this and that has really peaked my attention to him. Riley never had any coaching experience either. I’m sure there are two or three out there that could do a much better job then what we have now. You know in training show horses, there are trainers that can get a young colt going in the direction everybody wants the colt to go and then most of the time it takes another trainer to get him to the top. I think we have that case here.

I’m done with TM bad choices.
1) Sitting JQ after 3 straight shut outs
2) keeps giving Penner how many chances after saying that he likes his game on the 3rd line.
3) Keeps putting players in postions that they’re not comfortable in. ie, Parse on RW Moreau on RW
Then after the teams terrible showing against EDM he says it was just bad bounces.
Take a good look at last nights game;
while i agreed that we played better then against EDM i feel that we got lucky with some lucky bounces!!!
Two Pens shots hits post and another got behind JQ but Neal couldn’t tap it in with his backhand.
That’s 3 goals that could have changed the whole game. But TM says we are getting bad bounces!!!
This team needs a change! New system! New voice!

Feel bad about Davis Payne. Very good coach who won lots of championships in the minors, however once he became coach in the NHL he was dealt with a bunch of stiffs. That tells me that players in the minors have more passion in learning the game but once in the NHL they completely forget the days when they battled to get where they are today. Money, power and greed has a lot to do with it. Look at Penner, he is making top dollar to dog it night in and night out.

I don’t get why Moreau is even playing? He’s a stride or two behind just about every time I see him, hence all of the penalties, plus makes pore decisions on the ice. Positive veteran presence he is not. If TM feels the need to play one of these “experienced” guys out there, Hunter is a MUCH better option. At least he moves his legs and has a really good release on his shots. I’m down for a call up of Loktionov to feel his spot. We don’t need a “shut down” line since we have 3 strong lines capable of handling those duties when needed. Line 4 of Lewis-Richie-Clifford.

I am starting to agree with him, because I am tired of reading the same GD thing day after day. What does Terry Murray have to do with Ethan getting fined? NOT A DARN THING. So let it rest. Day in… day out… post in… post out FIRE TM… for goodness sake LET IT GO FOR A BIT!! Who is out there you want anyway? Marc Crawford? Andy Murray? Justin Beiber? I mean seriously, there isnt a good coach out available right now that will take over this club, if we were to fire TM. And comparing the Kings to St. Louis is like totally ridiculous. St. Louis has a habit of firing people when they are doing a fairly decent job… HENCE FIRING ANDY MURRAY EARLY LAST YEAR!!! I am tired of reading the FIRE TM post, for articles that has nothing to do with what Rich wrote about. Under a TERRY MURRAY comment feel free, I am all for that… but a Moreau fine, no! Please talk about subject at hand. I am pretty sure all of us bloggers are well aware that the majority of you are rooting for a TM dismissal. I know… I read it everytime I turn around, and I am getting sick of it. So please, can I get a rest from this? Sounds like all of you want to lose 6-5 than win 2-1! Thank you!!
About the fine. Glad it happened. I don’t tolerate hits like that from anyone, and that was not a very good hit. Glad he did NOT get suspended.

@#1faninVegas,
I hate Mondays too, but at least for this Monday, we have Kings hockey tonight. No matter who is behind the bench or facing a fine today, GKG!!!

@#1faninVegas, I’ll drink to that!
with 13 (THIRTEEN) games played the Kings are in the middle of the pack 5 points away from the first place team in the conference, 6 points away from the best team in the league. why the hell would you fire anyone at this point in the season?
had the kings started off like Columbus, sure maybe there would need to be a wake up call, but all is good for now.
just be prepared to see a crap storm if the Kings lose to the Sharks tonight…i tend to avoid this place after a loss.

@#1faninVegas, people have the right to say what they want.If u don’t like reading it then dont read it.Plain and simple.
I bet not the only reason Rich mad about.He mad because he has to delete people’s post by not behaving and following his rules of this blog.His rules has nothing to do with Fire TM comments…Maybe to u but not to him.
and me too i glad Moreau didn’t get suspended,But i hope he plays smart hockey …

@KingsFanFTW, Well if you go with the analogy that “people have the right to say what they want” then, people also have the right to say they don’t like and/or are sick of reading the same BS….right? So it is VERY plain and simple, I and apparently @#1faninVegas, also have the right to write that they are sick of reading the same BS! And oh yes, I also have the right to read it, even if it is monotonous, unoriginal and boring…It goes both ways FTW.
I just hope that everyone that is writing here about firing coaches, releasing players, trading players, ripping on Doughty’s millions, etc, AFTER 13 GAMES remember their posts when this season is over…It just might be interesting. I just wish some here would eat a big bowl of reality each morning and then come on here and have something interesting and original to say, because I really do like this blog and Rich’s writing, and the interesting things some-most have to say here.

@Shotongoal, yea i know am just saying.I didn’t say he cant say this.hehe ^^
But he is true people does need to stop saying they need to fire TM because the truth is there no one better than him and DL not panicing yet so why should the fans..I know i said it before but hey i did stop i see there other that keep on saying it.Its the same thing to me at least,”How people always saying Quick is a bad goalie and Bernier a starter”, how i use to get mad about that but the truth fact is they got the right to say what they believe in..
So what I’m trying to say everyone gets hurt in some way lol.
Well i thank you for being kind instead of being rude tho ><

@Shotongoal,
Wow! That brought a tear to my eye. I thank you, and can agree with you 100%. I for one have my favorite bloggers, and enjoy every article written by Rich. He brings so much to us fans and we have a tendency to abuse it. Reality… ahhh, the way life works. This is fantasy- Even though I play NHL 12′, I still juggle my lines like Terry Murray until I find the perfect fit. I am sure that if the Kings after 25 games were 14-5-6, they would still be posting the same thing. Even if we did score 10 games a game. Babbling, its Monday, and I am tired!!
Enjoy the game tonight Shot..

@#1faninVegas, I think most of us would rather lose 6-5, than lose 2-1.

So the NHL does watch our games

Poor Moreau he is the least paid King, something like $600,000, Clifford makes more than him. He always finishes his checks too, watch him play next time he is on the ice, I said it at the beginning of the season, I really likes the way he plays.
