Game 5: Kings 5, Blues 0 (FINAL)

The Kings are trying something new tonight: a home game on North American soil. It’s the Staples Center opener, with the action on Fox Sports West and 1150-AM and affiliates. Check back here for all the game updates as well… THIRD PERIOD In goal: It’s still Quick against Halak. Kings 4, Blues 0: The Kings [...]

Scouting the Blues

The St. Louis Blues finished 11th in the Western Conference last season and ninth the previous season, but they have given the Kings fits in that span. The Kings are 0-6-1 against the Blues in their last seven meetings, and the Kings haven’t defeated the Blues at Staples Center since Dec. 11, 2008. The Blues [...]

Kings showing patience with Clifford

The Kings started the season with Kyle Clifford on the third line and Ethan Moreau on the fourth line, but over the past week, there’s been a flip. That’s attributable to the play of both players. Moreau has been solid, particularly in the defensive end and on the penalty kill, while Clifford has struggled to [...]

After feedback, Martinez back in the lineup

Alec Martinez’s forced sabbatical is over. Martinez was made a healthy scratch for Saturday’s game at Philadelphia after coach Terry Murray expressed some displeasure with Martinez’s defensive-zone play. Martinez will be back on the ice tonight, though, in his normal blue-line spot opposite Matt Greene, and Martinez might take on extra importance now. With Drew [...]

Debut day for Voynov

The big day has arrived for defenseman Slava Voynov, who will make his NHL debut tonight. Voynov, a second-round draft pick in 2008, dealt with injuries early in his pro career but was an AHL All-Star last season and earned strong reviews last month for his efforts in training camp and preseason games. With Drew [...]

After knee scare, Penner good to go

After today’s brief morning skate, Dustin Penner efficiently worked in the dressing room to get all his gear together, a sure sign that he would be able to play in tonight’s Staples Center opener. That had been in doubt yesterday, when Penner left practice early and went to a doctor to have his knee examined, [...]

Power play on the move so far

It’s a bit tough to know exactly what to make of the Kings’ power-play numbers right now. They’re 4-for-16 this season, and that 25-percent success rate puts them sixth in the NHL. Then again, two of those goals have come in the unconventional 4-on-3 variety. (Is it strange that the Kings have so often failed [...]

Tuesday skate update; Penner to play

Dustin Penner made it through today’s morning skate without issue and is expected to play tonight against St. Louis. Penner indicated that there are inflammation issues with his knee but that a doctor’s evaluation revealed nothing more serious. As expected, Slava Voynov will make his NHL debut tonight and Terry Murray said Voynov will get [...]

Morning skate; Penner on ice

Dustin Penner is on the ice for the start of today’s morning skate, which would indicate that he at least has a chance of playing tonight against St. Louis. More updates to come after the skate…

Lokomotiv reminder, and opening-night activities

A couple notes on tonight’s Staples Center home opener. First, a reminder that the Kings’ wives will be selling silicone bracelets outside section 103, for $10, to benefit the families of the Lokomotiv KHL team that perished in a plane crash. The bracelets, which feature Kings logos and the phrase “Love for Lokomotiv,’’ will be [...]

Kings wives support Lokomotiv team

A quick note about tomorrow’s home opener. In order to support the families of the KHL team Lokomotiv that perished in a plane accident last month, the Kings’ wives will selling silicone red bracelets during all home games in October. The bracelets, which will be sold at the KingsCare booth outside section 103, cost $10, [...]

Will the Kings have the Blues again?

The St. Louis Blues were certainly not the kindest of opponents to the Kings last season. The Kings went 0-4 against the Blues, were outscored by a total margin of 15-6 and scored more than one goal in only one of the four games. The Blues are off to an up-and-down start, as they’ve gone [...]

Can Kings win again without Doughty?

Drew Doughty is out of the Kings’ lineup, and if this all seems a little familiar, it should. Last season, Doughty suffered a concussion during the fifth game of the season and was sidelined for two weeks. This season, Doughty got hurt in the fourth game of the season and is expected to miss 7-10 [...]

Voynov gets his chance to shine

When the Kings assigned Slava Voynov to Manchester, two days before the start of the regular season, they did so with praise for the rookie defenseman, noting how well he had performed in the preseason. For logistical reasons, Voynov stayed with the team until it got back to North America, and as it turns out, [...]

No change in Doughty’s status

Before Saturday’s game even ended, general manager Dean Lombardi said that Drew Doughty would be out 7-10 days because of the undisclosed upper-body injury he suffered in the first period against Philadelphia. The Kings put Doughty on injured reserve Sunday, meaning that the earliest he would be able to return would be the Oct. 25 [...]

Murray discusses Penner’s status

Here’s how the Dustin Penner situation has played out. In Philadelphia, Penner played approximately five minutes, and after the game Terry Murray said Penner had suffered a “contusion” but was fine. Today, Penner came out for practice but left 20 minutes into the 60-minute session. Below, Murray gives an update. How much reading between the [...]

Monday practice/Penner update

A few things from practice… – Terry Murray said Dustin Penner is still feeling the effects of the “contusion” — now called a knee contusion — that he suffered in Saturday’s fight. Penner’s status for tomorrow’s game is still to be determined. – Murray said the original timetable for Drew Doughty’s return — 7 to [...]

Penner out of practice

Dustin Penner left the ice after 20 minutes of practice. Update to come on that after the skate, hopefully. A trainer brought out a gray jersey for Scott Parse, who will apparently take Penner’s place in drills.

Monday practice lines

Slava Voynov made it to L.A. and is on the ice for this morning’s practice. With seven defenseman, the Kings are rotating in drills a bit, but for the most part this seems to be how they’re skating… Gagne-Kopitar-Williams Penner-Richards-Brown Richardson-Stoll-Moreau Clifford-Lewis-Hunter Parse-Fraser-Westgarth Scuderi-Johnson Mitchell-Voynov Martinez-Greene Drewiske Quick/Bernier

Director talks about Kings game presentation

You might remember that, last week, I solicited some questions for Danny Zollars, the Kings’ new director of game presentation and events at Staples Center. You, collectively, came up with some very good questions/issues, and since it’s impossible to ask 200-plus questions, I tried to narrow them down to the most popular themes (after eliminating [...]
