Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts…
(on scoring five goals after the recent drought…)
MURRAY: “And against a real good hockey team. Lehtonen is off to a tremendous start to his year. So to come in here and score five, it’s a big team effort. It took everybody to get the job done here tonight, with the special teams and I thought the game we showed in the offensive zone was pretty good, on recovering the pucks. We were moving our feet and creating separation to get some other opportunities. It’s a huge win for us in here.’’
(on Voynov’s play…)
MURRAY: “Voynov, he’s got a big shot. He shoots the puck. He’s got a nice skill that you don’t coach, and that’s the offensive part of the game. He’s got incredible composure. He sees the ice. He makes plays and he’s an instinct to be a part of the attack and to get pucks to the net. The puck comes back to him and he wants to shoot away. I’m going to keep encouraging it, because he’s a young guy and that’s a very valuable tool to have for a young player.’’
(on Voynov making it tough for the Kings to send him down…)
MURRAY: “Well, yeah, it looks like Doughty is going to be ready to go here, probably on the weekend, the next game. So yeah, there’s some decisions to be made, maybe more so by management than the coaching staff. We’ll see how that goes. But after tonight’s game, it gets you to think.’’
(on giving up the lead in the third period…)
MURRAY: “They signed a free agent, Ryder, and that’s what his purpose is. That’s why they signed him, is to score goals. He’s a dangerous player around the net. He’s very strong and that was a big goal for them at that time. Then they come back with their play behind the net. We lost a little coverage on that one, but give them credit. They made a strong play there to tie it up. But the response that we showed is what is important. At a critical time, a critical moment, you’ve got to come and do the right things.’’
(on the strong second period…)
MURRAY: “The second period, we came out real well. I really liked the way we showed some support for the puck here tonight. We recovered, we had great second-man support there right away, and that’s where Voynov scores his first goal, with Kopi jumping in and grabbing that puck. That’s the kind of play that we want to continue to build on.’’
Can the Kings waive(or send down Hunter) to buy more time for VV. Then the Kings can alternate Martinez and VV(who ever is playing better) and DD2 is a safty gap.

@puck73,
Let’s be honest, VV is a defenseman. Even if they make a move to keep him in the show, who are you going to sit in order to get him into the lineup? Martinez? We’ve already got DD2 sitting out most games.
Slava is coming on strong and I like his game but I don’t see any scenario whereby he stays in “the show” for now. Then again, none of us are good enough “hockey people” to be PAID to run/coach a team, so what do I know…

With all do respect, but when the Kings fans boo them after a wretched hockey game and the coach scolds the fans, theres something wrong. He should scold the players for playing so badly. Or, don’t play the hottest goalie in the NHL because you already told the back-up he could play. Other coaches laugh at this kind of stuff (especially the Devils staff).

Despite Voynov’s play since he’s been here, he doesn’t need to stay here unless he’s going to be a top six defenseman. Otherwise he needs to return to Mancester where he can play every day. And if he stays up here to be a top six defenseman that means Martinez is the one on the outside looking in. And then there’s the question of who you drop from the roster. Certainly not Martinez. Can you say waivers for Drewiskie?

It’s because of 2 straight number 1 overall picks. They usually turn out to be superstars, except for Patrick Stefan. They’ll be a good team soon if their goaltending and D step up. Chicago and Pittsburgh have gotten a few really good high draft picks in the past decade and they’ve already won cups. It’s like getting Kopitar and Mike Richards in consecutive drafts and watching them become stars and becoming competitive.

The simple answer for Voynov seems to be he would replace Davis Drewiske on the active roster. Then they could decide between him and Martinez on a nightly basis until they are confident enough in his defense to replace AM all together.
Doughty / Mitchell
JJ / Scuderi
Voynov / Greene
A puck mover and stay at home guy on every line. Is there something I’m missing that would make this not an easy decision?

Voynov has some talent. I don’t think he’s had a bad shift since he’s been here. I think this is really huge for his confidence. I think he actually has been pretty careful to not make any turnovers and hasn’t played up to his offensive potential. I think with some confidence he will start to shoot more and move into scoring positions more often, making him that much more dangerous. I’d hate to see him go back down because I think he’s only going to get better, and the team will be scary good when he plays well. He definitely has impressed me in his passing ability the most. He’s great on the transition game making long passes out of the defensive zone that lead to the team getting into the offensive zone. His skating ability is not as good as JJ or Doughty, but I think his transition passing game may be better than those two guys, and that’s saying a lot. I haven’t seen any of his transition passes up ice miss a teammate’s stick.

Wow no love for Martinez. Got news for you…Alec will never clear waivers. And Voynov is still shaky defensively.
[Reply]
Martinez is way too good to risk on waivers… where there is no way he would pass through. Same with DD2. This is a difficult decision, but there’s no sense in giving away an investment like DD2 or AMAR just to get Voynov on the roster a few weeks or months earlier than what DL prolly already had scheduled.
Voynov will get sent down briefly. If a space doesn’t open via injury, somebody from the D-line will get dealt. Room will be made this year, but not this month. Even after dealing Simmer and Schenn, DL still has flexibility (via Voynov) to aggressively fill holes for a cup run once a few veteran-deep clubs fall completely out of the race..

Why are we wasting a that roster space with DD2 if anyone goes down we end up calling up someone from the minors (Voynov). Stop wasting that space and just rotate voynov in for martinez or Greene… I love Greene but he isnt a top pair defensemen and he is taking too many interference penalties (signs of slowing down???)
[Reply]
The Kings will not give up any of their depth for free. DD2 and AMart are not going anywhere. AMart actually had a strong game last night, he was just completely overshadowed by VV’s two goals and assist.
To me, VV is starting to look like a new version of Visnovsky, and that can only be a good thing. He won’t be gone from the big club for long.
