Jonathan Bernier’s postgame thoughts..
(on the Devils’ three second-period goals…)
BERNIER: “Next thing we knew, it was 2-0, 3-0. In this league, it’s pretty hard when you don’t score that first goal or come back, especially against that type of team.”
(on getting the start in tonight’s game…)
BERNIER: “When I saw Quick with three shutouts, I really thought he [Terry Murray] was going to change his mind, but he didn’t so I have to thank him. He was confident about putting me back in the net tonight.”
(on the Devils’ first goal…)
BERNIER: “I thought I did a pretty good job of controlling my rebound. Unfortunately, it’s going to happen. With Anze, the rebound hit his chest and I lost it, I didn’t know where it was. I kind of tried to put my glove on it and my shoulder and it went in.”
Off the topic.. but I wonder if we changed our Jersey color to any other color than BLACK would it make a difference for any of our goalies in a game. I’m thinking a black puck laying there with a bunch of Black jerseys around the ice doesn’t help at all.

These comments that TM is responsible for this loss by putting in Bernier are idiotic. It is not like they lost 5-4.

@puck73, What’s that saying? “If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it”.I said in the first period that TM didn’t have this team ready,he as a coach should of done something about it,if the fans can tell the team is sucking, why can’t the coach?.I don’t blame TM completly, but you have a time out,use it,pull the goalie, send a wake up call, throw that damn javelin on the ice, there was no excuse for how bad this “TEAM” played.

@Rich Hammond,Hey Rich, I cannot place blame on any part of the team coaching even Bernie.
The team will do that all on there own, they all know how the played and enough said, moving on to the road trip pick up some points and get back to it!!! I have faith and belief that this team hasn’t even begun to peak, I know its coming!!!! GO Kings GO!!! thanks for the hard work Rich.

@Steve S., Decisions like TM’s affect the psyche of the entire team, not just the goalies. Think about it. When a goalie gives up 4-5 goals in a row, especially when the team is playing bad in front of him, what does the coach do? HE SWAPS THE GOALIE MID-GAME! He does it usually more to wake the team up to play better rather than to shake up the goalie.
Now imagine if you will, the team is feeling great, 3 straight shutouts, coach must me flying high and happy, right? Wait. You’re switching goalies? Now? Why? We’re playing just fine aren’t we? Sure the coach will give his explanation, but each player is human and will mull over it on their own.
You didn’t notice the lack of aggressiveness during the first period? I sure did. They came out harder in the 2nd because they got ‘told’ during the 1st intermission. The first 10 minutes of the 2nd looked forced to me, not natural like the previous 4 games.
Coaches decisions are ALWAYS read into by the players. Dissected and many times misconstrued or distorted. That is why I was so upset at the decision in the first place! The streak is hardly important compared to the confidence of the team.
Therefore, the thought of TM being the major reason for this loss is NOT idiotic, but very plausible. If you still don;t think so, watch Quick’s interview shown after the 1st period on FSW. If you can’t tell there is personal disappointment there, I don’t know what to say. Quick put his pride in his pocket during that interview and really backed TM and his teammates. I guarantee even though it was spoken about before the 3rd shutout took place, Quick was completely shocked he wasn’t starting tonight.

@Cynic, Well said. This is less about Quick vs Bernier, and way more about Mr. Murray’s ability to motivate or demotivate the team to win. A good coach knows how to create momentum for their respective teams — knows how to light a fire under their team for every single game — and knows how to eliminate or minimize off ice distractions for his players.
An average coach doesn’t create these things — but at least knows how to recognize and utilize them when they come along.
I’ve never seen a coach come into a situation where their team has all the momentum in the world and throw it out the window. Or effectively tell the media/team that this game isn’t nearly as important as the upcoming games — which of course creates all sort of off ice distraction for the players.
Without a doubt, the Kings play differently with Quick in net last night. The players owe Quick right now for his three straight shutouts. If Quick let in 7 goals last night, the Kings would have scored 8 — that’s how loyalty in hockey players work. “You did it for us, let us do it for you”. You can’t buy that kind of motivation.
Coaches pray for these stretches in a season where the players are playing their hearts out for each other. I mean — uhh — most coaches.
Instead our performance last night was horrible. But what do you expect — if the coach doesn’t care about the win, why should the players?
All Mr Murray had to do to be successful this week was be still and do nothing. How he failed at that boggles my mind.

he doesnt sound too confident to me, and to think he also thought like some of us that TM would play our #1 goalie QUICK instead of him
go kings go
[Reply]
I can’t comment on the quality of his play tonight, but from prior viewing experiences, I feel as if this team needs to play Bernier for nearly every game or trade him. Quick is absolutely amazing, and I would love to him as my goalie, so I’m not saying burn him – but I feel the team needs to be confident in Bernier (which they aren’t I believe) and a goalie of his caliber cannot sit on a bench without developing rust.
I think the Kings should wait one more season and make a trade because unless there is a mentality change in both the players and the coach – one of the goalies will lose several important years and the Kings will get hardly anything for them in a trade.

This is the fundamental difference between quick and bernier. If quick lets in a bad goal, he takes the blame, if he lets in 3 he says he was at fault and comes back with a strong game. Bernier is the opposite, never takes responsibility for not playing up to par. I’m not saying he should be like quick but he can’t be this dodgy of the subject, its his goaltending that’s the issue. If quick had been in, it would have been 0 – 0 and it would have been at least 1 point.
[Reply]
Jonathan Bernier, as a netminder and a person, is quality in both areas. He has the potential to be great. BUT. He is different than JQ in a few key areas. 1.)We/me attitude, 2.) NHL compete level (will come in time). Even if it was false selflessness, I’d like to hear him just say, “I needed to be better, I should have had the rebound, but I didnt see it.” Leave Kopi’s name out completely. Also don’t say its hard when you dont score first. C’mon JB this is the NHL, you dont score 1st every night. Maybe saying “when we give up the first goal”, one is blame, the other responsibility. Taking some more (even when its not your fault) might sway non-believers and teammates with the dreaded lower body injury “bus tread on the backside..” We need him, so lets be easy on him, especially this early on.
[Reply]
This loss isn’t on Bernier. The entire team played badly and sure didn’t look like the team I saw in the last two games. They’ll put this one behind them and will hopefully play better on the road trip.
