Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was named the NHL’s “first star” for the week that ended yesterday. Ottawa’s Jason Spezza and Washington’s Tomas Vokoun were the second and third stars, respectively.
Quick became the first goalie in Kings history to record three consecutive shutouts and now holds the franchise’s longest streak of consecutive shutout minutes, at 188:10. Quick has also reached 101 career NHL victories. Spezza recorded three goals and four assists in three games last week, while Vokoun went 3-0 with one shutout and allowed a total of three goals in three games.
The Kings are scheduled to be on the ice for practice at 10:30 a.m. today.
Good thing he got 3 shutouts or he’d have been 2nd.

@gene, He won’t come off till tomorrow at the earliest (I believe). Jim Fox has already stated that it will be Voynov. Not because of his play, but because of depth issues. Voynov will get regular call ups this season as injuries occur to the defense. I think no matter who gets injured on defense, he’ll get the call, because even if it’s a stay at home, he’ll get some time as the 7th, and still be here with the team.

As for the other goalie star… 3 wins, zero losses and only 1 shutout Vokoun? Not good enough buddy. Try again! LOL.
Quick’s focus is unbelievable. If he can keep it up, there is no question he can carry us deep in the playoffs. Listening to Tim Thomas talk about how much the concentration takes out of you emotionally is very telling about what it takes to win it all. I have no doubt JQ has the constitution and determination to reach that level of consistent play. When he does, we are in for the ride of our fan-lives.

@wavesinair,
I agree also.
I think why he didn’t get the recognition in the past, is becuase the Kings couldn’t score. If he gave up 1 or 2, everybody freaked out and considered them soft, because they figured that was a huge mountain to overcome (even though any team would take only 2 goals or less against awsome), so Quick must be responnsible for the loss.
If we score more now, with Quicks awsome goaltending, we’ll win more, and if Quick lets in 1 or 2, fans won’t look at it as a crisses of character every time the opposition scores because they know we’ll get it back.
I long for that confidence in the Kings as a team. It’s one thing to say it, and fight hard to get it back, But it’s another thing entirely to know you’ll get it back, and confident that you’ll score enough to win.

@Dominick, To be realistic, outside of the Phoenix game, the Kings haven’t really scored more. If not for the shutouts and lights out play of Quick, we could still be hearing the same unfounded criticisms.
[Reply]
We are finding ways to win games. No one has really “beat” us except the Sabres. We have been in every game, including those where we didn’t play all that great or a full 60 minutes. If it all comes together, the rest of the NHL is going to be, as Elmer Fudd would say, “vewwwwy, vewwwwwy afwaaaid.” Of course, one of the main reasons we have been able to win those close games is that JQ and our defense have kept us in every single one of them. JQ is definitely handling the puck better, looks completely confident and is playing those shots from the circles much better (that was always his weak spot). Kudos to the Kings coaching staff for helping JQ improve those weak spots from the past couple of seasons.

Stuart Reply:
October 24th, 2011 at 11:36 am
@Shotongoal, all of the above LOL… you obviously haven’t been around in the last few days.
First, during the STL game “even though DB just turned it over inside the blue line, I’m glad he held up and looked for a play to develop!!! He’s heard my prayers! LOL where you at Shot!!!”
– then, after you thought I missed DB’s pass to Stoll “@Shotongoal, you missed all that conversation buddy… And, I never said he can’t pass, just that he doesn’t.
Stuart Reply:
October 19th, 2011 at 11:29 am
@Shotongoal, CORRECTION: last season, yes I was saying he couldn’t complete a tape-to-tape to save his life, so if you’re going that far back (which would make me feel special that you’d remember our conversation from that long ago ) then yes, I have said that. But this go round I was just asking for him to look for the pass and make a play, and at the 19 minute of the first, I commended him for doing just that. I asked for you at some point Shot… GKG PassDBPass!!”
– I’ve given DB hi props for playing with his head up the last few games!
Secondly, WRT to Bob and the mis-call I said “I rememember listening to Chick hearn call everyone and their mother Worthy, and then a few years later everyone else and their fathers became Horry… its really not that big of a deal, remember who you’re listening and the fact that he’s been doing this since many of us were in diapers or still swimming with tails and you’ll appreciate what we got going for us. Hell, Bob can call every jersey on the ice Brown and I’d still enjoy him for the million other things he does right!
Everyone should show a little respect! I thought it was hilarious, especially when DB shot and MB saved it… it was kind of like watching Bugs Bunny playing the BronxBombers…”
So you see, I only gripe when it’s warranted Shot, and sometimes it is, and that’s ok. Nobody’s perfect and when our C isn’t you’ll hear about it from me.

@jimrad,
I think JQ could actually break or tie the record. With the D playing so well in front of him and the O putting increased pressure on the other teams to play defense first, then he has a shot. Heres how the next 4 games stack up:
1. NJ – they have already been shut out this season once or twice. We have already faced them and played them pretty well considering it was our first game back from Europe. I believe JQ faced them so he knows them. Shut down Kovalspank and Parise and Quick could shut them out. Another plus, it is at home with 3 days rest.
2. Dallas – it is in Dallas which is a negative, but JQ has already seen this team and shut them down. Concentrate on Benn, Ericksson and Robeiro. Difficult but doable.
3. Phoenix – same as Dallas. Concentrate on Doan, Hanzel and Yandle. JQ has already shut them down also. Again, difficult but doable.
4. Colorado – in Colorado against a team which is overachieving but playing very well, this is the team that I think will be the most difficult to shut out. Hopefully they start to have a downturn before we face them and catch them in a downslide.
As long as our D holds true and we don’t take a significant number of penalties creating PK situations, Quick has a good shot at the record. More importantly, four consecutive shut outs would mean 8 points in the standings, with 2 victories over division rivals and 1 victory over a conference rival. Hang in their JQ and GKG!!

I think we need to take the same approach that Quick is taking to this. Not worry about any records and just hope for wins. 2 points > shutout records.
I’d love for him to get 5 straight shut outs, but thats really, REALLY unlikely. 5 or 6 straight wins, definitely is not out of reach.
