No changes or surprises in today’s practice. Terry Murray said Drew Doughty will stay in Los Angeles and will skate tomorrow, and Murray said Doughty is feeling “much better,” but there is no updated timetable on his return.
More notes and quotes to come, but for those who attended the game last night, I’m curious about your thoughts on the game presentation. I’m sure Danny, who graciously answered questions here this week, will also be reading and be interested in your feedback…
As far as the the game presentation goes, I thought that Danny did a nice job and I’m glad that Cartman (South Park) is back. Having said that, I did have the following two issues:
1. My #1 complaint was that the organist did not play the 2 notes after the Kings scored, which encourages the fans to taunt the other teams goalie by chanting his name (i.e., Haaaaaaaaaalaaaaaaaaak). This really gets the fans into it and helps with the environment.
2. I personally was not a fan of the music, and thought that it was not geared towards getting the fans excited. But I know how difficult it is to please all of the different music tastes in the crowd, which is an impossible task.

@Brian, the 2 notes you refer to that taunt th egoalie is not done after every goal and never has been. It is done at times when a goalie is having a bad night and we’ve scored a few on them. It usually seems to happen when we score in fairly close together.

I thought it was a step in the right direction with the player introductions. The graphics looked better and more polished.
It would be interesting to add short sound bites of the player’s own voices during their pre game video introductions.
The one thing I still can’t stand is that fake castle façade the players enter from. It’s just cheesy as all hell. Looks cheap and childish. Given that we are in LA, the movie making capital of the word, one would think we could do a bit better on set design. I think the Kings deserve something better executed than that. I thought for sure they would get rid of that.
All in all, as long as they keep it fun and lively in the building, that’s all that matters. Was hoping for just a bit more sophistication with the overall presentation.

This really says it all in regards to the castle. Having been a part of the movie making process myself, I can tell you the things these craftsman create are nothing short of spectacular. So to see that castle just makes me cringe. Maybe it would work in Arizona or even Anaheim, but not here.

It was great to be back, the place was ready to rock and so were the Kings. Thoughts about the experience: Good video opening, poor player introductions (the arch or whatever was weak, especially for people sitting on half of the arena) Sound system was very good, lasers were nice, missed the Kings drummers. Saw a lot less Bailey which is not necessarily a good thing, I think he is the best mascot in the business. Not a fan of Jay, the various “contests” are weak, Lemonhead, Zamboni, please. Oh the trivia question, how about screening these people, “have you ever watched hockey?” One song was played as if they were testing the foundation of the building. I’m all for some bass but that was ridiculous. That’s it for now, I’m sure my fellow posters will remind me of more.

I just didn’t like that the SAME footage was being played over and over again on the scoreboard. I saw Dustin Brown with a cut on his cheek a good 12 times last night. Also, the three stars ceremony was awkward as hell. Kopitar looked like he thought he was going to be one of the stars as he was waiting in the tunnel with Gagne and Quick, and then we all ended up waiting around for Stoll instead. I don’t know whose fault that actually was, but it was awkward.

I would like to see more of a “punch” or excitement when the Kings hit the ice. Not this laxidasical stuff. IE. Exit the castle and roll around the ice like it’s practice.
What happened to the chants? It’s always fun to taunt the opposing goalies – it always gets the crowd into the game.

@KingsGuy,
“It was a fairly quiet game especially for the home opener.”
I’m not sure how many games you attend during the year, but I can’t disagree more. The fact is, Staples will never be a loud as other arenas, both because of the structure itself and we’re in LA, not Montreal.
That being said, in comparison to your average game, the crowd was fantastic last night. I do agree with you about the chants and I do believe there are more creative ways to get the fans into participating more. For example, that one chant that starts, “put your hands together” along with music that sounds like the beginning of Benny and the Jets is just awful because a) it’s a slow beat that doesn’t lend itself to clapping and b) it goes nowhere! There’s no rhythm to it and no conclusion.
I would LOVE to see video clips of high profile fans introducing a chant. Everyone loves Cartman, but a real person would get people’s attention that much more. For example, Kiefer Sutherland saying something like, “What’s up Kings fans! Remember, this is our house. And when these other guys come into our house, we’re not gonna make it easy on them. So let’s do this. Ready? One, two, three!” …and then play the chant. Anything like that where we embrace the city would be really fantastic IMO.
But overall, the presentation was well balanced. Danny, you did a really good job on the sound levels too. There were mistakes but overall, very good sound levels. But most of all, I thought the flow was good. Some great quiet moments as well as not jumping over a chant with an ad or some other thing. There’s always room to improve but I say keep it up and definitely try to add more chants.

@wavesinair, I’ve been a Kings fan for decades, and have NEVER seen a home opener where the fans chanted GO KINGS GO during the last seconds of a 5-0 victory. I thought the game presentation was 1000% better than last year. Better sound system, better music, better videos, more Cartman! The lasers were cool, the intro was cool. All around awesome. Everyone around me in my section was commenting on how much better the music was compared to last year.
That said, the ‘large’ soda in the concessions is a joke and highway robbery. $5 for what would be a small at any other restaurant in the world? Come on. It’s bad enough the cheap seats are nearing $50, but to take $5 for $0.05 worth of Coca-Cola is robbery. Especially when they take that tiny cup and fill it to the top with ice before they fill it. Really irritating.

Some of the old school video clips for when a goal was scored worked, some didn’t.

One of the best game presentations ever imo. Much better than the last couple years. Music was good, Kiss cam on the two blues was classic, fat lady bailey singing was comical. I’m sure when the Kings win like they did last night Dan’s job is a million times easier.
I think one of the best touches was the shield they put together for the players introductions. Instead of the two hockey sticks kings shield logo it was two swords and was neat to see a new twist on an “old” logo.
I’m undecided about the dancing gif’s after goals. I liked them so far but Idk about a whole season, how many of those can there possibly be ? With the flex cam, can we discourage bro’s from pulling off their shirt to actually flex and stick to the funnier fans?….unless they continue to switch to a little kid mocking them immediately after. And I’m sure it being the home opener contributed to this and the NHL cracking down on long drawn out pregame ceremonies had something to do with this (And I was “late”) but I was kinda surprised there wasn’t a moment of silence or any mention of pavol demitra and Lokomotiv.
My one gripe had much more to do with a particular concession stand that had a meltdown during the first intermission but I’m sure that will get taken care of on Saturday.
In any event great first game of the season Danny. Here’s to another 38 like that one.

The lines in that Famima type store really created an impasse when trying to move… It’s a nice store, with a nice layout and a nice selection, but the cash registers are either in the wrong place or there needs to be some sort of queueing up process for checkout that doesn’t include standing in the middle of the store so no one can move.

@Marc Nathan, Most people today are too stupid to make change without the “dummy button” on their register. Back when I was running a register I refused to use said button and would just open the register drawer to make change. It was amazing how many people thought I was ripping them off when they couldn’t see the change shown for them on the register.
I’ve also been whining for years about the national anthem. Tell me again what’s the point of it? I don’t see it being sung at movies, concerts, and most other forms of entertainment. I’m not trying to be unpatriotic, I just think it’s a waste of time. Ask any athlete if they would do away with it, and I bet 90% privately say yes. But if we have to endure it before a game, tell the singer they have 90 seconds to sing it and then the mic gets turned off!

The contests are always cheesey.
The guy with the microphone needs to go, think his name is Jay?
I read that they tinkered with the horn. My son last year would cover his ears when we scored, he didnt cover his ears last night.

Cartman’s gloves should be Kings color instead of SJ sharks color.

Pre-game intro was nice – if you were sitting on the right side of the ice. For those of us behind the kings when they came in we just see a giant black piece of electronics. That sort of takes aways enjoyment when you HAVE to watch the jumbotron while at the game. Maybe go with a more 3-dimension intro. The Sharks skate out of a giant shark mouth. Doesn’t matter where you sit, its a shark all around. Have the Kings come out of a cast with a drawbridge. Something thats viewable from all angles of the ice. A tower or castle wall with a drawbridge can be built to be seen from all angles, instead of just one.
The goal celebration videos missed the mark in my opinion. Ferris Buellers day off? Saturday night live? What do these things have to do with the Kings celebrating a goal. Stick with the crowd and on-ice shots. If you want to do something canned please come up with something more relevant to hockey.
New sound system sounds good. Would like to hear more organ music though. Part of the stadium experience is getting to experience things at the game that you cant experience at home. I can play Aerosmith at home. I can’t play the Lets go Kings melody on the organ.
Just my thoughts. I’ll take the current in game entertainment forever if it means we always win 5-0

Was in section 303 which is behind where the Kings come out for intros …. could see squat and the video on the score board cut away from the ice to way too soon so from my prespective it was a F.
Sound system A+.
Video after goals A+
Music … love classic rock which was most of it, but think there should be newer stuff mixed it for the younger folks. B.
Give aways. Lemonheads and parking spot … ugh. Same old horrible stuff F. $50 dollar ticket gift certificant barrystickets … A+ best give away in a long long time.
I think more could be done to get the crowd going so C.
Overal C+.

my thoughts are: 1. the goal horn i thought still was a little soft!.. i think it needs to be sounded a little longer when big goals are scored!.. 2 i agree with those who think the organist needs to play the goalie chant after were up 3,4,and 5 zip!.. nothing was sweeter than hearing staples chant “TUR-KEY” at Marty Turrco for all those years! 3. i think its impossible to play music for 18,000 people so no complaints!.. cartman was great!, new jerseys look awesome!, and the team played well!!!… beer even made its glorious return with a 25 cent increase as usual! lol gkg!!

**Pregame and warm-up skate music was horrible–we kept on feeling like we accidentally ended up in a club in Vegas.
**Music once game started, music was good. (Totally understand you can’t make everyone happy.)
**Understand there is a new sound system, but the bass was over the top at times (and I LIKE heavy bass.)
**Parents shouldn’t have to put ear protection on their little kids–doesn’t that tell you something about the volume? (I’m in section 319)
**I find Jay very annoying and not adding anything.
**It was not fun seeing Brown’s face slash 20 times during the night. Doesn’t make me want to go out and buy any food.
**Overall, it was good….I’m just hitting the areas that I believe still need some work. Please.
Danny, we do appreciate you listening and trying to make the fans happy–in no way an easy feat.

Does anyone know the song they played during the 2nd periof video intro? It was heavy with base, a little funk guitar and a some yodeling sprinkled in there. I think it was the yodeling that sold me.

@BigKidNick, The original version is called Hocus Pocus by the band Focus. The name of the album is Moving Waves.

I haven’t been to a game live in some time so I was kind of on visual overload last night lol. But the video lasers all that jazz was amazing. Can’t believe how loud it is in there now haha. Agree in game stuffs kinda lame, but camera guy has a great sense of humor. Some great shots were mike Richards on the bench rolling his eyes at the over the top national anthem singer and the two blues players on the kiss cam! But whatever I’ll take all the gimmicky stuff if we win.
[Reply]
With all the talent in LA (and kids who want exposure) why can’t the Kings get singers who can actually sing the National Anthem? The laser show was nice, but wh green???Wouldn’t purple be more appropriate? You get purple by mixing blue and red, duh!

@Is this the year?, lasers don’t work that way ,there not light bulbs with a colored filter the colors come from the element being excited in the diode .you find a element that burns purple then you’ll have purple lasers

The video before the players were brought out was good. The puff of steam(smoke) as they came out was lame. The croud chanted ELLIOT AFTER THE GOAL HE GAVE UP. The fans did it on there own. The guy dancing to the Bee Gees in the third was sweet. he was better then the Dancing man a few years back.

Please change the cash registers so no signature is required on credit card purchases. Everyone else has, and this will speed up the lines.
Anything else you can do to improve service please do! Staples has the slowest concessions of all 12 arenas I’ve been to so far.

No Nick and Daryl on 530AM inside Staples.
Goal horn was too loud. According to people in my section. 115
The bass level was a little high. My friend in the music biz told me the “high end” was missing.

the video package with the team quotes literally gave me chills. it reminded me of the quote from the SJ writer they displayed before Game 3 of last year’s playoffs. Unbelievably uplifting.
Goal horn & bass levels I felt were perfect.

I just want the the castle gone. Please… It’s unbelievable that a company like AEG could use something that looks like a cheesy cardboard facade as a backdrop to introduce an NHL team to fans paying hundreds of dollars for seats. Clearly no part of the budget has been allocated to this. If they just removed the castle and it were just the plain doors, it would be an improvement.

Rich,
Watching the game on TV I also thought the opening presentation was great from that aspect. great game to watch. Thanks to all involved (behind the scenes)!
[Reply]
The clips after each goal were hysterical. I remember Elaine, Soul Train, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the SNL Chippendales… what else am I missing?
Only two complaints:
- when the Kings came back on the ice, David Courtney yelled “Your LOS ANGELES KINGS!” and the horn blasts within two seconds. The horn was so loud that I (and most fans, it seemed) instantly stopped cheering. Let the crowd noise carry the team out, we don’t need the horn… especially since it seemed like that horn was far louder than the goal horn.
- I love Cartman, but I was hoping for something funnier than the simple Go Kings Go chant… It would be great to have more team-related or comical Cartman bits. I know there are limits, but hopefully Trey and Matt come through!
Overall, game presentation was fantastic.

I thought that the overall game experience was great. A 5-0 win helps alot.
The castle, ugh. What castle has one inch thick, flimsy doors? This is Hollywood. The Kings should be able to find someone to make some doors that look much more formidable. There was a moment before the Kings came out where they held a camera shot of the doors and I hoped and hoped that part of the start of the new season would be those doors exploding, or the Kings themselves smashing through the doors, or Bailey kicking them down. Something spectacular should be done to get rid of those lame doors. Our players and fans deserve better than that weak looking castle.
There used to be a countdown clock on the monitors around Staples Center during the intermission. I don’t understand why this was taken away. Knowing how much time you have before the next period starts is very helpful. Please bring back the countdown clock!
I enjoyed the clips, music, and other game entertainment, with the exception of the Bob Miller imitation contest. Whoever said that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery surely wasn’t talking about something like this. That was about as bad as when they had us all watch two guys playing Guitar Hero. Besides that, I thought the entertainment was very good. By the way, our organist is great!
I read somewhere here about bringing back that Godzilla clip. I’d love to see that one again, too.
I’ve been a season ticket holder for 18 years and have to say that was the best home opener I’ve been to. Way to go, Kings!!!
