The Kings will announce a couple roster moves soon, with Drew Doughty going on injured reserve and defenseman Slava Voynov being called up from Manchester of the AHL. [update: It's now official.] Even if Doughty, with his “upper-body” injury, is out for the minimum of the 7-10 days he is estimated to be out, he could still return when healthy. Voynov played in two games for the Monarchs this weekend, with one goal and one assist, and was a healthy scratch today. He should be in town when the Kings resume practice tomorrow at 11 a.m. in El Segundo.
Yessssssssssssssss for Voynov

@historyguy67, Sure it did (or could have.) Perhaps if he was skating around with NHLers as opposed to the London Knights, he would be more weary of taking big hits. Maybe he would have had a better presence of mind to not skate into the zone looking at his feet.
Who really knows. We can’t say if it did or not.

@TradedForADraftPick, That would be cool, but that’s a move the Kings can save for an injury. If they do it now, a player would have to leave, and I don’t see the Kings giving away any depth just to give a guy a chance now. That means later if he gets hurt, we have no one to replace him. 2 strait shoulder injuries is a concern, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Kings give him a taste when an injury comes, then see how he holds up for a whole season before making it permanant.

@Markisonfire, I think one of them would be more likely to be traded than demoted because they would have to pass through waivers and I don’t see either one of them clearing waivers. DD2 might, but Martinez definately wouldn’t. Martinez being traded makes more sense because he could fetch more in return and because we have more offensive defenseman in the minors than we do defensive defenseman. Although i’m not advocting AM.

[Reply]
Could this injury somehow be related to his missing training camp? I think I read somewhere that guys who join their teams late like Doughty did are often out shape, get off to a slow start, or get hurt. In his case he seemed to be in shape and quick, but maybe he isn’t as sharp as he could be which is why he got leveled last night.
[Reply]
CB14 Reply:

@efam, In terms of being “sharp”, it’s impossible to say if that played a part in his injury. Personally I don’t think it did.
With regards to missing training camp, those injuries are usually from being out of shape and exerting yourself while not in great shape. Often times they end up pulling muscles, like groin or hammy’s. Not what happened to Drew.

@CB14, That is also a concept held over from a time when training camp was used as a time to get back in shape after a off-season of rest. That’s not really the case any more, players are expected to have intense off-season training. Even if they do slack off, yeah, it’s going to be pulled muscles, this doesn’t sound like that.

Dewey is an integral part of the Kings, another “face of the franchise”. You don’t pay someone 7mil a year to play in the AHL on a conditioning stint. Dewey will be back, probably in 7 days. And unfortunately, VV will head back to Manch when Dewey comes back, too bad. I’d love to see VV stick, he’s going to be a very good NHL defenseman.
Like so many others here, I’d also like to see Lokti come up and next year I’m certain he makes the team; he’ll probably get a shot before the season is over, the same for Hicks & Muzz depending on how healthy the Kings stay.
I also don’t see the Kings sending down either AMmart or DD2, neither would clear waivers and both have played well. DD2 looked good yesterday against East LA. Either player would be grabbed in a sec by any one of a number of teams in the NHL. Barring a trade which I sincerely doubt or another injury, VV will be back in Manch. But…I look forward to watching him play regularly next year.

There is no certainty that Voynov is even with the Kings next season, let alone a sure thing he’s in the line up. Those who are in the line up now who don’t have expiring contracts are most likely to be in the line up again next season. So unless the King’s decide to move salary due to being out of the playoff race before the deadline or decide to not resign an expiring contract like Mitchell, I doubt Voynov or any prospect for that matter is a sure thing next season.

Maybe, but I still think Hickey gets moved.
Scenario:
If we have a defenseman go down for a long time this season and Voynov gets an extended call up, (more than 10 days) and plays very well, then maybe he beats out Drewiske next year. But if the Kings are in a good playoff position this year, and there is an opportunity to pick up a real game changer forward, I see them moving Voynov and or Hickey.

Dominick Reply:

@bitter, I think DL has the depth he wants, and will keep it that way as long as possible. He’ll probably work Voynov in 30 to 60 games for the next 2 seasons, and use that to negotiate another contract, with the promise that Voynov is very much the future of this franchise. If he resists, and refuses to sign a longer contract, he can leave to the KHL 2 years from now (if he makes it that long). That is not preferable for Voynov because that means 4 more years before he can play in the NHL as a UFA. If you think DL’s afraid, think about his best D-man missing camp, and possibly sitting out a whole season, and tell me DL wouldn’t do it.
Moondoggie Reply:
October 16th, 2011 at 6:26 pm
@bitter, I tend to agree with Dominick on this one. I could be wrong but the D will be a little different next year. I love Mitchell but with Voynov and Hicks waiting in the wings plus Muzz, you’re going to see a trade or someone get picked up in waivers, its inevitable and for once a great position for the Kings to be in. I can’t remember the Kings ever being this stocked, especially in their own end….
If I’m a betting person (and in this sport I’m definitely not) I think Voynov makes the team next year, this year possibly if a trade or injury comes into play.
Steven H Brown Reply:

@bitter, Well they did so well so far with the pickup of Penner last year, I’m sure Lombardi wants to do that again, with Voynov, or Hickey. DP still has a chance to turn things around on that assessment, but he seems to be in Terry’s doghouse and people seem to stay there a while, once they get there. also seems as likely that a goaltender is the next piece traded rather than a d man.
Moondoggie Reply:
October 16th, 2011 at 9:44 pm
@Dominick, Don’t see a trade bud….Honestly, I was surprised when they sent him back to Manch but its because DL could expose him to waivers; he couldn’t expose DD2 or Amart without losing them. He’ll make the team next year and, depending on injuries he may play quite a bit this year with LA. We’ll see….
[Reply]
Dominick Reply:

@Moondoggie, I honestly don’t see DL trading anyone at all. DL loves his draft picks, and hasn’t shown a pattern of being trade happy. As soon as someone makes the top of the food chain, everyone wants to get rid (and do it for nothing) of whoevers underneath him.
Prime example: “Get rid of Quick” poppycock! even if Bernier becomes a #1 DL isn’t waiting in the wings for this to happen so he could get rid of one. He’ll let Quick fight his way back. We’ll get awsome goaltending in the meantime, and be deeper than any team in the league because of it.
Voynov isn’t an NHL defenseman yet. If he makes his mark like Martinez did last year, great. If he doesn’t, we have plenty of time. If a trade presents itself DL will consider it, but saying trade guys for no reason is so Bruce McNall era, and it’s not going to happen.
This isn’t pick your favorite and everybody else underneath them is cannon fodder. That might be how you build a team on NHL 2011 for the Play station, but that’s not the Kings way in reality.

I think Martinez will be quite valuable. He’s got good size, decent speed and above average shot. He’s not overly physical and could improve there but he is more than serviceable for our needs now. I think this is the guy Voynov has to beat out for a full time spot. Unless they think Martinez and Drewiske are interchangable. Then he’s got to beat out both of them for either the 6 or 7 spot.

Never though of it that way and can’t argue with that logic
Drewiske plays like he did yesterday he’ll be around for awhile. Schuds and Mitchell are outstanding players. We need both of these guys to stay healthy. Next Drew and Jack, young guns ready at a drop of a dime. Drew get well! Now the next two are up in the air. Greene should have that “A” stripped off his jersey for the way he played, and Martinez is off to a slow start. He still has the skill that made him a fan favorite last season. Drewiske surprised the hell out of me. We need him to play tough hockey all the time. Voynov is a big time talent, but is he truly ready. I guess we will find out soon enough.
As some of you know I have a big job in Manhatten Beach to complete. I’ll be in town for about 10 days. I’m going to go to the game vs Dallas. Would like to meet up with some of you if I can. Nothing like meeting fellow insiders while in town. Someday my goal is to meet KC and friends. I heard that at the Redondo Cafe has some cool watch partys during King games. Martinez was “benched” because Murray wanted a big bodied defenseman on Greene’s line. Alec is playing fine and not in the doghouse.
Penner got “bruised” in the fight and saw limited minutes in the game. (OK, he got his butt whooped, but props nonetheless).
Voynov is a right-hand shot and a good call-up when we need to play someone on right-side D. Also being a puck-moving D with a similar style to DD helps the situation.
No one is getting traded. Voynov is not bolting to Russia. Clifford is not getting sent down to the minors. Ad Nauseam!

@KC23, I agree with you, but since VV played the pre-season with Mitchell, I expect him to play with Mitchell. I think TM likes to keep WM on the left side, so I don’t see Martinez playing with him. KC23 Reply:

@CB14, pre-season is zero indication that a rookie defenseman is ready to step into the real season as a first line defenseman. So far all Voynov has faced are AHL guys struggled to get to the show.
Pre-season = vets just trying to stay healthy during the pre-season and AHL forwards struggling to break into a forth line roll.

@Downsy89, Or maybe…
VV played on average 26 minutes TOI during preseason.
VV plays on average 26 minutes TOI for Manchester regularly.
VV gets a few $10000 paydays instead of the usual $800 per game so he doesn’t feel compelled to play in Europe first chance he gets. (he would double his AHL salary in two weeks with the big club!)
He plays a similar style to the recently injured superstar.
And finally, VV has sported one of the best mullets in the organization, and that goes a long way in pro Hockey!

I like the call-up of Voynov. He’s the guy most like Doughty and fits well with Mitchell. I’m pretty sure Drewiske got the start because TM doesn’t like to go too long without getting everyone into a game.
If Voynov plays well it may open the door for a trade but probably not right away. Usually you don’t see NHL trades until at least 20 games into the season.
But with JJ and Doughty locked up long-term it makes me wonder if Voynov isn’t the one that gets dealt. Seems to me his ceiling is much higher than 3rd pairing.
Either way I hope he plays well.

Remember that DL has dreamed of a JMFJ – DD first line for years. That opens the door for VV and Deslaurier down the road.

@Token, i guess it depends on if the Kings want to keep pairing up one offensive guy with one defensive guy. Voynov, Hickey and Muzzin are much more comparable to Doughty/Johnson than they are Mitchell/Scuderi. I haven’t seen much of Deslaurier but he might be the only sure bet that’s more of a defensive guy.
it’s entirely possible that they will go away from the offensive/defensive pairings that they have now. a doughty/johnson pairing would definitely be something different.
i just don’t see how Voynov, Muzzin, Hickey and Deslaurier are all on the NHL roster any time in the next five years unless some guys get moved.
personally, i’d rather see Voynov get Martinez’s minutes and be the 2nd PP unit point guy.

Gagne, kopi, williams- a great 1st like whos going to be dangerous
penner- skating hard and standing up for teammates.. like his attitude change this season
Moreau- big dude with great skating, physical presence and screening goalies
Clifford and lewis- havent noticed these 2 much.. Lots of goals against this line
Quick- wow! hes been awesome and won games for us
Bernier- not the best start..again but kings didnt play great in front
Still waiting for the second line to step it up.. I know it sounds sketchy but i think moving either williams or gagne to the 2nd line may increase the scoring balance for the kings.. Probably gagne for penner.. with kopi penner will probably score and gangne and richards may be able to spice up the second line

@jason,
“Clifford and lewis- havent noticed these 2 much.. Lots of goals against this line”
Clifford is only a -2, one of the goals he was just stepping on the ice after Brown’s llne was the real cause of the goal.
That’s just not a true statement.
Also Clifford has been playing with Moreau, Lewis, Westgarth… Not the most offensive players on the ice. That’s a far cry from Simmonds and Richardson in last years playoffs.
Clifford has created some good chances and has been in on the puck hard. I thought last game had had some good cycles and created a really good chance that lewis couldn’t finish on.
I like how some people on here already want to sell off Clifford and what he provides to this team. He provides a toughness that this team is lacking and taking him out and putting “Lokti” in, would only make it worse.
We don’t want to be a team like the nucks, that make it to the finals, only to get pushed around by a tougher team.
Look at what the Flyers wanted for Richards. They didn’t want Lokti, they wanted Simmer (tough gritty hockey player) and Schenn (tough gritty hockey player). Both players can score, hit, fight, and play a great defensive.
To me, I wouldn’t be questioning Clifford after 4 games. I would be question Brown and Stoll. Brown has 1 hit in the last 3 games, that’s not going to cut it. I think the reason Clifford or anyone else when on the 3rd line hasn’t been doing anything, is because of Stoll. Gut check time for the captain and Stoll.
Look, people on here wanted no part in JMFJ and al he has done is give us two game winning goals. Lets just all be happy the organization doesn’t listen to any of us. LOL

@lakingsfan10, Brown has played exclusively with Richards so far. Brown hasn’t been hitting (I think because he’s nursing an injury), but he is creating space out there for Richards. That line is a minus because their not scoring 5 on 5 either.

@jason,
Agree with everything (especially shuffling the first 2 lines around) except for Clifford, and Lewis being scored on. They have been scored on twice, but haven’t scored as a line, so their a -2.
Defensively their good. Offensively, if they just potted a few goals, they would be even at least. The team as a whole is doing well defensively at 2.50 GAA (take out that Buffalo game and their 1.50 GAA.). Scoring wise as a team their scoring at a 2.02 rate. The team as a whole is a minus in goal differential, and it has to go somewhere.
So far game 1 is the only game they managed to score 3, the rest are 2 or, under (not including shoot outs).

@jason, The forward lines, except for #1, are unsettled. Mostly because Penner’s been unavailable most of the time, partly because it takes a while to gell. Even after Penner’s settles in, the big question with the top-6 is regarding Brown. When he’s skating hard, disrupting in the crease, he’s fabulous. Only needs to pass to his line mates and crash the net. Defensively, he needs to continue learning how to not give the puck away and to get back to dishing out his trademark body checks! He’s been good on the PP too by screening the goalie and not over handling the puck.
The bottom six has a couple of good elements playing well, but no coherence yet. I think Lewis, Moreau, and to a lesser extent, Stoll have played well. A definite “work in progress”.
I think DD2 played because he was the only roster player to not see action. He played well. Martinez is coming off a great performance. Was not “benched” for bad play. Voynov was recalled because he’s the best fit in DD’s absence, plain and simple. Most here just get carried away with speculation.
GKG!

Rich,
Anything of note on Stephan Legenie? I read we got him from the Flyers and was sent straight to Manchester.

What number will Voynov wear? Also, what are the dates for the Kings Insider Suites games? I’m gonna try to fly out for at least one.
Thx!

Im not gonna this say karma, but there is a sense of justice that Voynov will get his shot…

Good luck to Voynov. Let’s hope he shows the same type of play as he did during pre-season.
This is a huge loss, although it could have been much worse. Thank God it wasn’t another concussion.
I know everyone’s happy to see VV get his chance, but not when it comes at the expense of our best d’man.
Let’s hope he can minimize the loss somewhat. He’s not DD, so lets temper our expectations somewhat.
I’ll settle for a sound game with limited mistakes.

@nykingfan, It almost seems that Doughty’s contract thing during camp may have been a blessing in disguise now. It gave Voynov the opportunity to play some with Mitchell and this may make the transition while he’s up a little easier. There really is no replacing Doughty, but with the way Johnson has started the season and Voynov’s strong training camp, it may take the sting out of him being injured a little bit. Great to have depth this year!

@Shotongoal,
You may very well be right.
I just think training camp and regular season are 2 different animals. in Pre-season you have a lot of kids playing who are not going to make the club. these are guys Voynov would be going against in Manchester. Once the season starts,he’s going to be exposed to a whole other level of competition.
But you’re right that he was gtiven the opportunity to play with Mitchell and at least get a feel for what is expected.
The depth we have is incredible….You knew there would come a point when a guy like Voynov would be needed. Now’s that time!

@nykingfan, I too agree that camp/preseason is NOT regular season, but if Doughty had been there Voynov would probably not have gotten the chances that he did, which now is a good thing for him and the team….hopefully!
Pretty pleased with the Kings start. Didn’t think they could beat Philly. Does anybody know if Schenn is playing yet?

KC23 Reply:

@Poorman, He’s playing in the AHL. Basically what happened with Schenn … in order to save over 1 mil in cap space hit due to a bazzare bonus clause in Schenn’s contract (writen by the King’s btw) that stated “if you average 25 min a game for 82 games you earn a million plus bonus (forget the exact amount). So, that cap hit has to stay on the books until it is impossible to attain it. The only way to make it “impossible” for Schenn to obtain the bonus (because the wording was “average” 25 min for 82 games) was to send him to the AHL for one game so he couldn’t play 82 games.
So the flyers sent him to the AHL for a game, but in the mean time the Flyers have gone undefeated (in regulation)in four games so as not to mess up the mo jo, Schenn has stayed out of the line up. Expect him back as soon as the Flyers go through any kind of slump.

@KC23, exactly right. I think Schenn made a mistake making his caphit so high for an ELC. Even DL had issues with bringing him in under the cap.

Madness.

@Dominick, i do think DL should explore moving Martinez but only if he nets something of value. no need to trade anyone at this point unless it improves your team. trades are not easy to put together and more than likely if DL makes any trades it won’t be for another month or two.
but i prefer Voynov to Martinez but for the next 7-10 days we’ll get to see both.

@Dominick, the grass is always greener on the other side. Trading whoever right now makes no sense. Voynov hasn’t even played on game of regular season NHL hockey and before he establishes himself other d-men are expendable. You don’t trade just for the sake of trading – heck what would DL be able to get in return for Am or DD2? Draft pick? No need to rush; those can be acquired up to draft time. A player in return? Already have enough 3rd & 4th line players. Everybody knows the price for top line quality with the richards/Schenn trade. Not gonna happen with AM or DD2. even if voynov was the one traded who else goes with him in a trade for a 1st or 2nd liner winger? Penner? Ha.
Anyway back to voynov, I think TM will use him in a very selective role to start off. He’ll play in a couple of games and then go back down until the next injury. Let the situation play itself out.
Will make for an interesting trade deadline. What does DL do with his 2 most valuable chips – bernier & voynov?

@Dominick, this is my feeling about the majority of the posts on this blog in the last couple months. unfortunately it seems like the hockey IQ of the comments is way down from last season. everyone wants to play coach and GM and make moves that make no sense like having unproven minor league prospects come up and replace more experienced NHL players. everyone is a Power play expert and Kompon and Terry Murray are the devil. even after wins im seeing lots of very negative ridiculous comments because the Kings only won by 1 and apparently they need to blow every opponent out…even on the road…in order to please some. its very unfortunate that now one has to sift through all the absurd comments just to find some that make sense. i suppose this is to be expected from a public forum.
i just wish there was some sort of an “ignore” button, where one could click next to a poster and never see any of their posts again.

Wow guys, why trade anyone right now??? This is exactly what good teams go through every year. We have great depth and skill at Manchester. Anytime any gets nicked or even takes a moderate injury we can feel really good about the young player who comes up to step in.
Even if Voynov does great I wouldn’t trade Martinez. I’d let Voynov go back to Manchester to learn how to be a leader and to digest and integrate what he’ll learn from his 7-10 (hopefulluy) day stint in the NHL.
Besides even if you really want to makes trades we should wait until someone else has such a need that they have to overpay us. Off season trades make more sense for us anyway for almpost all they guys mentioned for trade here. Any young player will likely raise his value by playing a full year whether in the NHL or AHL. (Okay maybe not Parse, but he probably has little trade value anyways since he was hurt and now is in the doghouse)

Some nice posts above in this thread.
I appreciate the posts that try to put some brakes to all the “grass is greener on the other side of the fence” posts suggesting trades, cuts, and more rookies on the big roster. Posts that mock these would-be GMs, for example by suggesting Lombardi send Kopitar and Quick to Manchester so as to put some more kids on the big roster, are great (sorry, I don’t recall which thread I saw that in, or who posted it, but you know who you are– well done). True, the Kings are maybe _too_ deep in good defensemen, and a trade or two could make sense at some point, but there’s no good reason Lombardi would be feeling any pressure to do anything exceptional at this point. These days, the kinds of personnel ‘problems’ the Kings have are generally the kinds of problems their fans, coaches, and managers would have _loved_ to have had throughout most of the past 15 years, in fact most of the franchise’s history!
And the trigger-happy junior GMs might ponder this: teams that win Stanley Cups don’t do so with rosters full of first-year hot shots, even if they’re indubitably all budding superstars-to-be.
