Postgame reaction; Penner OK

Terry Murray had nothing new to add on the status of Drew Doughty, who was not made available for comment after the game. Dustin Penner’s minutes were limited throughout the game, and Murray said Penner sustained a “contusion” during his first-period fight but was OK. Flight back to Los Angeles leaves very soon, so postgame quotes likely will be delayed.

@David, A contusion????? Seriously!!! My God, please don’t tell me you guys are buying that mess???? TM sat Penner b/c he is a guy making $5-mill a year who should be making plays and scoring goals,,,,not challenging guys to a fight. Just b/c he cleans out a Devil from in front of the net in the final minutes of a game and comes to Doughty’s aid in the first two minutes of a game does not make him worth his weight in gold. Put points on the board,,,,that is what he was hired for. Unless I’m mistaken, he didn’t do that last year and there is no indication he is going to do it this year. I’m sorry to be so pessimistic, but let’s face facts,,,,to date, Penner has been a big scale bust. He didn’t sit on the bend today because of a contusion, he sat on the bench today b/c he is not contributing anything of substance.

@Rtwing7,Really guy, in the NHL you have to have guys to stand up for thier teammates, how long have you benn watching hockey?

    ducksuck Reply:

@Rtwing7, I agree with you that he may not be playing all that great, but if you watched his 1st game back he had chances to score(getting open in the slot) and big hits(charging, but you can argue he saved the game). Can’t agree with some guy that is bashing Penner for playing well. You my friend need to back off Penner and go cry about why he did bad last year(new system new team fat). He has tried and he has looked good better than a Rich Clune or a Dwight King. This is the Kings roster and unless he messes up big, no clue why you would bash him for sitting on the bench. The guy has size and 1 year remaining on his contract. He has no trade value so get over it.

    Rtwing7 Reply:

@Rtwing7, Well my friend Scott,,,,I have been watching hockey for the same 42 years that I have been playing the game. And your missing the point, there is nothing wrong with standing up for your teammates, it’s the lack of production and poor defensive play that I’m eluding to. There are plenty of guys who show tremendous effort and dedication, but that doesn’t equal a spot on an NHL team. Penner was brought to the Kings to be a 20 goal scorer, and he is not even getting a sniff. I totally hope he will come around, and if he does, I will be the first to praise him,,,,but I just don’t think he is showing anything more than he did last season, other than losing some weight. Trust me, he was not sitting on the bench last night b/c of a contusion, he was on the bench b/c TM did not like his play. I will cross my fingers and hope getting back home kicks him in gear, but until I see something more, I will continue to be critical of his play.

    red49er Reply:

@Rtwing7, the weak ass one handed passes are what got Penner sat. if not for the fight Murray would have put him on his own plane after the 2nd period and told him be happy he wasn’t cutting him altogether.

    CrownLA Reply:

    @Arron,
I have to disagree, ive been watching Penner since he started his season because I wanted to see how he was going to perform and I have to say he may not have any stats that show up right now but he has gotten a good number of chances in front of the net. They just didnt happen to go in. Besides those chances hes been making those good checks and stood up for Drew(someone had to), so in my opinion hes been doing a good job so far.

I like the way Lewis has developed. He may have more offensive upside than what one would think. He’d just need help w faceoffs if he plays at center. But on the wing, clearly that isn’t an issue. I thought he stood out in the playoffs last year.

    CB14 Reply:

@number 6, Agreed, Lewis is solid. He had some pretty plays immediatly after Kopi went down last year.

If Neil wants to bring up Lokti, which I agree with, put Lokti at center with Richardson on L.W. and Lewis on R.W. Speed, speed, and even more speed! All while still having 2 very good defensive players on it.

@Dilapidus, OMG!!!!! Penner’s play was not solid,,,,it was #@$%&! Just b/c he stood up for Doughty doesn’t mean he played well. Penner hasn’t played well at all with the Kings. He was weak last year, and quite frankly he is lazy this year. I don’t care how fit he is,,,,he is lazy!!!! He does not fit in well with the Kings work ethic mentality. Say what you will about TM, but he clearly has seen the same thing,,,why else would he sit a guy making the kind of money Penner does unless he wasn’t brining anything to the table. From a management perspective, it is not easy for TM to sit a guy like Penner, he is making too much money to justify a spot on the end of the bench.

    Datacloud Reply:

@Michelle et al, OK, the timing on this post isn’t the best, as I just finished watching the game, but to call that game one of JJ’s best is a dubious gesture of kindness in my opinion. He made some questionable plays behind the net and on more than one occasion, he stood motionless in the crease with the puck at his feet, and only at the last moment was he able to get it out of immediate trouble, only to put it right back on the stick of a Flyer. At least that’s the way it looked to me. He did make some solid plays one on one and broke up some breakaways as Michelle mentioned, but there was the usual cringing on my part associated with his positioning and coverage.

You know what, though? He won the game. Again. Guy has been clutch if nothing else. I don’t want to come across as being a basher, but I guess I just have really high expectations of him. He’s turned it up in DD’s absence before, so hopefully he does it again over the next couple of weeks.

JJ has been and is a very good PP player. He scored both game winners this year pretty much the same way. However, both of those goals were with fewer skaters on the ice. These two goals were not 5 on 4 PP’s.

What JJ has been doing sneaking down back door is something the Kings SHOULD have been trying to do for over a year. I wonder why it took Kompon so long to figure that out?

@Tony Granato, oh yeah, Westy sure made Rinaldo pay later on didn’t he? Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy as a person, just not that much as a hockey player.

    [Reply]

    Tony Granato Reply:

@Soyokaze, Penner, who was actually on the ice for that play, stood up to rinaldo, got 17 PIM for it, got injured, and it led to a Flyers goal.

If Westy comes out later in the game and tries to run Rinaldo again, gets an instigator, and the Flyers score, everyone on this board including you would be all over him.

    Soyokaze Reply:

    @Soyokaze,
@Tony, You swear Westy would go out there and really teach Rinaldi a lesson. Westy had an opportunity to respond and merely tried to play grab ass with Rinaldi. So Rinaldi turtles, but as an enforcer you need to have that eye for an eye mentality. You knock one of our star players, i’m gunning for one of yours. I do not see that quality in Westy. With the given minutes he did have, he could’ve thrown his body around like a wrecking ball rather than try to “talk” his opponent into a fight.

Last season against the coyotes, Paul Bissonette was a spark plug with his fists, hard hitting, and energy. I’m hoping for that type of game from Westy, but have yet seen that quality.

    CB14 Reply:

@Soyokaze, Exactly why we don’t need Westy out there. When Westy tried to send a message to Rinaldi, all he did was go near him and ask him to fight. Rinaldi declined because he knew he’d get his butt kicked, and that was it. Westy needed to take an instigator penalty there and beat the crap out of Rinaldi to send a message to Rinaldi and every other player in the NHL, “If you’re going to hurt one of my teammates, I’m gonna beat the crap out of you, regardless of whether you want to fight me or not”. If he’s not willing to do that then he shouldn’t be in the game. To those of you who say at that point in the game Westy did the right thing by not getting an additional penalty, OK fine, you’re right, but then why is he in the game in the first place for?

To fight the other teams enforcer – No, Shelley was still suspended.
To throw body checks – Now that’s funny.
To intimidate the other team so that they don’t hurt our players – No, Rinaldi certainly didn’t get the memo on that one.
To enforce the game if one of the Kings gets hit/hurt big time – No, see above.

    Why was he out there?

    Stuart Reply:

@CB14, exactly. I haven’t caught the game yet (dvr) but I saw a clip of the hit and then later it was mentioned that Pens time went down and now reading here it seems he jumped in after the hit on DD and may have suffered an injury? Do I have that right? If so, I agree wholeheartedly with you CB. No nastiness in Westy, maybe it’s the Harvard in him, but Perros would have gone after him with or w/out agreement. If he needed to take EVERY penalty in the book and maybe even take a suspension, that would’ve been the time that it would’ve been cheered in the locker room. The guys could then feel “safe” when Westy is suited up… That guy should’ve paid and made an example of because it seems that so far (and I know it’s only 3 other games) it seems that the other team(s) is taking it to us physically. And now that someone got a shot off on DD the next one to be targeted will be AK…

    [Reply]

    CB14 Reply:

@Stuart, Yes, you have that right. In Westy’s defense, he wasn’t out there when DD got hit, Penner was and he immediatly fought Rinaldi, getting injured in the process. I don’t mind Penner taking it upon himself instead of waiting for Westy to do the dirty work, but I agree with you completly that Westy should’ve taken every penalty in the book to teach Rinaldi a lesson. Who cares if Westy gets suspended for a few games? No one that I know of.

Somebody please explain to me what exactly it is that Penner is doing so great this year!!!!! I hate to be so pessimistic, but I just don’t see it. And clearly, neither does TM. I can’t fathom siting a guy who makes the kind of money Penner does unless he is a serious liability. How do you justify to the owner that you sat a $5-million a year guy on the bench. I have heard all the hoopla about Penner being in great shape this year,,,,,fact is, he is still a lazy hockey player who is not earning that big salary. I say get rid of him now while he might still be worth something, to a team who believes he might help them, for one or two young hard hat wearing, lunch pale toting gamers.
